Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Qi-State Origin-Flow comprehension — previous life 1 Comprehended the technique in Twenty-Four Festival Tongtian Valley. His subsequent attempt to unite numerous cultivation paths failed to achieve immortality.
Cultivation resumed — age two 3 Began training as soon as he could move normally, emphasizing physical conditioning rather than conventional chakra extraction.
Chūnin-comparable taijutsu — age five 3 His previous-life experience and physical training made him comparable to an ordinary Uchiha Chūnin in taijutsu. Could barely command two departed spirits.
Body and spirit strengthened 3 6 After the Ueno attack, his physique, spiritual strength, and eyesight improved. Initially attributed this to absorbed soul origins, but later identified the Urn of Life as the cause.
Overt Force; modified chakra extraction — age eight 37 Could concentrate his whole body's strength into a single explosive point. Had begun extracting chakra containing faint natural energy several months earlier. Further martial advancement remained limited by physical immaturity.
Three-Tomoe Sharingan confirmed 48 Explicitly displayed after Kurama Natsuki's betrayal. His Sharingan was already active during the attack on Uzushio, but the supplied account does not establish its initial awakening date.
Transforming Force — age fifteen 56 Could shatter Madara's Great Fireball with a punch. His Golden Light Mantra and Five Thunder Orthodox Method had returned to their previous-life level.
Feng Hou Qimen adapted to the shinobi world 56 Gained usable divination after years of adaptation, though complete control of its four plates still required further calculations.
Mangekyō Sharingan awakening 59 61 Awakened Nirvana Path and experienced a major chakra increase. Used the spatial ability to escape several thousand meters from danger.
Golden skeletal Susanoo 61 Manifested an enormous golden skeleton against Hyuga Tennin's Eighty Gods Vacuum Attack.
Yomi and expanded Urn of Life functions 62 Defeated Tennin with Yomi, suffering severe ocular strain. His Mangekyō awakening also enabled temporary storage within the Urn of Life.
Flying Thunder God Technique 97 112 Demonstrated teleportation while moving Sasori to the Land of Waves; later described as possessing maximum proficiency.
Qi-State Origin-Flow — second step 111 Reached “Extending and putting it into practice lay in thorough understanding,” connecting the imprints of past and future within his Divine Soul.
Rinnegan integration and eight-skill synthesis 121 Following surgery, devoted ninety percent of his Source of Life to nourishing the Rinnegan. Used the Body Tempering Furnace, Gelel Stones, and the Eight Extraordinary Skills to strengthen his body, spirit, and Nascent Soul while rejuvenating his thirty-year-old body.
Second Rinnegan gestation — ongoing 124 127 Continued gestation in the Kamui Dimension for almost two months. Using the Rinnegan during this process would slow his ongoing growth.

Background / History

Previous Life

Zhang Jingxiu was the second personal disciple of Zhang Jingqing, the sixty-fourth Celestial Master. Zhang Zhiwei was his eldest senior brother, while Zhang Huaiyi was his junior brother. Jingxiu later served as a senior ritual elder of the Celestial Master Mansion 1 39.

Seeking immortality, he joined a group of thirty-six practitioners that included Wu Gensheng, Zhou Sheng, and Zheng Zibu. At Twenty-Four Festival Tongtian Valley, he took the place originally belonging to Zhang Huaiyi and comprehended Qi-State Origin-Flow. Rather than stop at that achievement, he attempted to unite myriad paths into one Dao, but failed at the final hurdle 1.

His martial education included exchanges with Li Shuwen and Li Jinglin. From Li Jinglin, he learned the essence of Tai Chi Two Principles in exchange for the Celestial Master Mansion's Dragon-Tiger Wind-and-Cloud Sword 3 15.

Rebirth into the Uchiha

Reborn during the Warring States era, Jing Xiu became Uchiha Tajima's second son, Madara's younger brother, and Izuna's twin. He retained his previous-life memories and knowledge of the shinobi world's original history, including the deaths awaiting most of Madara's brothers 1 3 32.

The new world's elemental structure prevented him from directly practicing most of the Eight Extraordinary Skills. He therefore concentrated on methods that remained usable, particularly physical conditioning, the Golden Light Mantra, and the Five Thunder Orthodox Method 3.

After surviving the Ueno attack, he discovered three phantom treasures within his consciousness: the Underworld King's Blade, Hades Surplice, and Urn of Life. Their existence convinced him that ascending to Hades's divine throne might offer another route to immortality 4.

Appearance

  • Youthful features: Described as having a face even more delicate than Kurama Natsuki's 36.
  • Resemblance to Izuna: His face looked exactly like Izuna's during the Uzushio incident. Fugaku later noticed his strong resemblance to his grandfather, Izuna 46 67.
  • White robes: Normally wore a spotless white robe; it became bloodstained after Natsuki's attack and tattered after Honnō-ji 48 62.
  • Frequently closed or covered eyes: Often fought with his eyes shut during periods of impaired vision. Later kept them wrapped in bandages during his Rinnegan development 63 87 127 133.
  • Rejuvenation: His thirty-year-old body began growing younger during Rinnegan integration 121.

Personality

Jing Xiu's central ambition is immortality, but he distinguishes genuine transcendence from merely possessing a long lifespan or inherited power. He seeks to understand the principles behind techniques rather than remain dependent on abilities he cannot explain 1 73.

He is intensely disciplined. As a child, he maintained morning and evening spiritual practice alongside stance training, fist techniques, and swordsmanship. Black Wolf found his self-imposed regimen excessive even by shinobi standards 8.

Although politically perceptive, he has little interest in clan office for its own sake. He regards organizations chiefly as sources of cultivation resources and resents Tajima's repeated interference with his training. His willingness to advise Madara does not extend to accepting constant responsibility for clan affairs 6 33 53.

His loyalty is selective and can become brutally disproportionate. Believing Izuna had been killed, he unleashed the Three-Tails on Uzushio despite witnessing civilian families die. Conversely, Sasori's companionship genuinely matters to him, and he treats Kimimaro's survival as worth personally intervening for 46 87 127.

Jing Xiu is confident enough to underestimate others, but recognizes that weakness after suffering consequences. Following the White Tiger Gate explosion, he explicitly admonishes himself not to dismiss other people's intelligence 60.

Abilities & Skills

Martial Arts

Jing Xiu combines previous-life martial knowledge with a deliberately strengthened shinobi body 3 37.

  • Baji Fist: Taught its forceful methods to Madara and Izuna 4.
  • Acupoint attacks: Targeted Madara's acupoints during childhood sparring to create openings for Izuna 1.
  • Tai Chi Two Principles: Learned its underlying principles from Li Jinglin 15.
  • Weapons training: Practices spear techniques, swordsmanship, and close-range fighting with fists, knees, feet, and elbows 8 27 78.
  • Transforming Force: Eventually developed enough physical power to break Madara's Great Fireball with a casual punch 56.

Chakra and Daoist Methods

His modified extraction method adds a small quantity of natural energy to mental and physical energy, producing denser chakra that gradually nourishes his body and soul 37.

  • Controlled natural-energy intake: Keeps mental and physical energy equal while incorporating only a faint proportion of natural energy; deliberately avoids increasing it too far before physical maturity 37.
  • Golden Light Mantra: Provides adaptable protection and can form constructs such as the hand used to restrain Natsuki. Its protection is not absolute: poison can corrode it, and Jing Xiu acknowledges that his mastery remains incomplete 48 69 88.
  • Five Thunder Orthodox Method: Supports Lightning Release, movement enhancement, and bodily purification 46 88.
  • True Samadhi Fire: Combines with natural power and Fire Release. His Sage Art: True Flame Annihilation destroyed Kaguya Tiexue's bone forest 72 118.
  • Elemental knowledge: Possesses Lightning and Fire Release, plus a basic grasp of Water Release gained through Hozuki Cangliu's ability crystal and research on the Three-Tails. His lack of Earth Release experience initially obstructs learning Dust Release 81.

Eight Extraordinary Skills

The Eight Extraordinary Skills form the basis of his eventual attempt to unite cultivation, bodily refinement, and spiritual preservation 121.

  • Qi-State Origin-Flow: Nourishes his Primordial Spirit and governs his true self. His interpretation identifies spirit as the root of qi 111 121.
  • Divine Machine Hundred Refinements: Refines magical artifacts and supports the forging of an immortal body 34 121.
  • Six Treasury Immortal Thief: Refines incoming power and sustains vitality 121.
  • Grand Luo Insight: Enables inward examination of his body and spirit. Its introspective component remained useful even when he could not practice the complete technique 3 4.
  • Feng Hou Qimen: Provides divination and battlefield control through the Mystic Gates Eight Trigrams Formation. Applications include stone barriers, quicksand, Chaotic Golden Watchman, and an imitation of Wood Release drawn from surrounding natural forces—not an innate Wood Release bloodline 56 61 112 113.
  • Heaven Communicating Talisman Art: Inscribes Dao patterns to support numerous techniques 121.
  • Twin Hands: Forms part of his synthesis for restoring the body and Primordial Spirit 121.
  • Spirit Summoning and Dispatching: Commands souls, borrows their abilities, extracts memories, and ultimately seals his own Primordial Spirit against dispersal and reincarnation 3 36 121.

Dōjutsu and Space–Time Techniques

  • Sharingan: Initially borrowed a deceased Uchiha's Sharingan through spirit manipulation; later developed his own Three-Tomoe and Mangekyō Sharingan 3 48 59.
  • Nirvana Path: His left-eye Mangekyō ability reveals a path of survival and allows instantaneous escape. He identifies a passage toward the Underworld within the eye; the effect of reversing its rotation is initially unexplored 59.
  • Yomi: Draws targets into an inner landscape comparable to a genjutsu space. Used against Hyuga Tennin and to show Madara their shared past 62 100.
  • Susanoo: Manifests a gigantic golden skeletal form 61.
  • Flying Thunder God: Teleports between marked locations and transports others. He also uses marks to monitor Obito's movements 97 100 112.
  • Rinnegan: Its integration steadily increases his chakra and strengthens his entire body. During gestation, using its power would reduce the benefit of continued cultivation 121 127.
  • Ocular limitations: Mangekyō exertion causes severe eye strain and impaired vision. Nirvana Path also does not guarantee escape from the full effects of an exceptionally fast, wide-ranging attack 62 63 80 81.

Perception, Concealment, and Medicine

  • Spiritual perception: Combines the Quanzhen Yang God Method with the Primordial Spirit cultivated through Qi-State Origin-Flow, exposing many conventional concealment techniques 53.
  • Sensory limitation: Initially struggles to perceive nonliving objects without chakra, a weakness exploited by Sasori's concealed weapons 69.
  • Water Illusory Body Technique: Conceals his presence during infiltration. Later revisions, combined with merging into nature, prevent even Konan from detecting him at close range 77 116.
  • Medical ninjutsu: Eventually approaches Tsunade's level. His penetrating divine sense supports procedures as demanding as Kimimaro's spinal transplant 109.
  • Research and intelligence: Builds surveillance bugs with Sasori, studies bloodline abilities, and uses the Body Tempering Furnace for cell fusion and bodily modification 77 109.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

Hades's Sacred Treasures

  • Underworld King's Blade / Sword of Hades: Exists within his consciousness but remains too insubstantial to wield when examined during the Third Shinobi World War 4 71.
  • Hades Surplice: Accompanies the blade and urn; likewise remains beyond practical use at that stage 4 71.
  • Urn of Life: Produces and stores Source of Life, supporting recovery and dangerous experiments. Later gains temporary storage functions and can preserve his Mangekyō Sharingan within its contents 6 13 62 118 121.

Weapons and Tools

  • Light Thunder: A straight Tang-style ninja blade forged by Jing Xiu. Its signature slashes combine Chidori's acceleration with the Five Thunder Orthodox Method; at the time of the Uzushio incident, its effective instantaneous attack range is roughly one hundred meters 46 47.
  • Arc Light: A curved blade used alongside Light Thunder. Jing Xiu kills Suikazan Fuguki with its Chidori Sharp Spear 46 68.
  • Futsu Sword / Futsunomitama Sword: One of the Three Spirit Swords. Its Lightning Release conductivity exceeds that of his personally forged blades 107.
  • Yata Mirror and Totsuka Blade: Recovered from a shattered statue in Indra Temple. The Totsuka Blade later seals Shukaku; wielding it solely through his Divine Soul causes prolonged unconsciousness 71 93 107.
  • Body Tempering Furnace: Completed with Sasori's assistance. Improves ninja aptitude, supports biological experiments, and provides an inner landscape used during his meeting with Madara 72 100 109.
  • Devouring Pouches and Devouring Pouch Orbs: Storage artifacts distributed to allies and used to transport Izuna and preserve Sasori's remains 6 48 133.
  • Blood Contract Scroll: A rune-covered sheet of thin silver foil used to bind the Three-Tails and suppress its consciousness. Maintaining that suppression strains Jing Xiu severely 46.
  • Talismans and formations: Includes Golden Light Jewels, purification and spirit-gathering talismans, and the Five Elements Heavenly Lightning Formation used to subdue Samehada 6 68 88.

Relationships

  • Zhang Jingqing — Previous-life master. Jing Xiu regrets failing to repay his devoted instruction, but does not regret pursuing immortality 1.
  • Madara Uchiha — Protective elder brother and student of his martial and Daoist methods. Jing Xiu advises him politically and seals his Mangekyō, insisting that power should remain a tool for survival 4 18 56.
  • Izuna Uchiha — Twin brother and frequent sparring partner. They argue over who is younger but coordinate seamlessly in battle; threats to Izuna provoke Jing Xiu's most destructive retaliation 1 46 47.
  • Uchiha Tajima — Father and source of increasing conflict. Tajima repeatedly assigns dangerous missions, seeks his training methods, and engineers a scheme involving Jing Xiu and Izuna to advance Madara's power 33 34.
  • Uchiha Black Wolf — Initially a hostile mission companion who threatens him. Later becomes a trusted operative entrusted with surveillance of Tobirama and orders to protect Izuna 7 8 46 56.
  • Kurama Natsuki — Guard whose bloodline interests him. Her apparent devotion ends in a poisoned betrayal, after which he kills her 33 36 48.
  • Hatake Ryuichi and Aburame Zhihong — Loyal retainers whose positions also give Jing Xiu influence within their clans 60.
  • Tobirama Senju — Recurring enemy and research incentive. Jing Xiu initially spares him partly to encourage the development of useful forbidden techniques, but later decides that justification no longer applies 48 111.
  • Sasori — Captive turned research partner and close companion. Sasori comes to regard their life together as familial; Jing Xiu later retrieves and preserves his remains 72 87 133.
  • Uchiha Fugaku — Later-era clan head who accepts Jing Xiu as First Elder with veto power. Their relationship eventually turns violent, and Jing Xiu removes his Mangekyō Sharingan 68 113.
  • Tsunade — A contentious acquaintance whom he initially respects for saving many lives, including Uchiha. She later accompanies him toward Kumogakure 83 97.
  • Orochimaru — Research contact and political intermediary. Their exchanges include information about the complementary and opposing properties of Senju and Uchiha powers 93 109.
  • Kimimaro Kaguya — Loyal subordinate and experimental beneficiary. Jing Xiu treats his bloodline disease, modifies his body, and intervenes when Kiyoteru attempts to turn him into a pill 109 127.
  • Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki — After their deaths, Jing Xiu collects their souls and incorporates them into his fighting strength. He later allows them greater freedom to act 109 116.
  • Obito Uchiha and Black Zetsu — Participants in his later schemes who become direct opponents. Jing Xiu pursues Obito through Kamui and subdues Black Zetsu 109 127 133.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Warring States Missions and Clan Alliances

Jing Xiu's early missions force him to survive alongside Black Wolf, confront Hyuga and Fūma forces, and develop his artifact-making methods. He also helps Madara counter the Senju through alliances, cultivating ties with the Nara, Hatake, Aburame, and other clans 6 15 18 31 33.

In the Land of Crafts, he works with Qingming on the Four Symbols Divine Artifacts while seeking a suitable basis for his own Body Tempering Furnace. Meanwhile, Tajima's attempts to obtain his methods and manipulate his brothers deepen their conflict 33 34.

Uzushio Retaliation

After extracting Uzumaki Qingzhi's memories, Jing Xiu obtains knowledge of the complete Sealing Jutsu compendium. He and Black Wolf then hunt Uzumaki squads, accumulating life force for the Urn of Life 36 40.

Believing Izuna has been killed, Jing Xiu summons the controlled Three-Tails into Uzushio and devastates the village. He subsequently finds Izuna alive and rescues him and Natsuki from Tobirama and Mito, only for Natsuki to stab him with a poisoned blade. He kills her and withdraws with Izuna 46 47 48.

Honnō-ji and Temporal Displacement

At fifteen, Jing Xiu divines an approaching mortal crisis and travels to Honnō-ji. After surviving the White Tiger Gate explosion, he confronts Hyuga Tennin, Sarutobi Yuri, Shimura Kamenosuke, and Uzumaki Xiangnong, ordering Izuna and the allied forces to retreat 56 59 60.

He kills Sarutobi Yuri and Shimura Kamenosuke through Feng Hou Qimen, then defeats Tennin with his newly awakened Mangekyō abilities. Tennin's dark-gold crystal triggers a golden beam from the moon, transporting Jing Xiu sixty years forward. Izuna establishes Rōran with Xiangnong while waiting for his return 61 62 63.

Third Shinobi World War

In the later era, Jing Xiu becomes Uchiha First Elder, kills Suikazan Fuguki, and partners with Sasori. Together they complete the Body Tempering Furnace and pursue research during the war 68 72.

His infiltration of Iwagakure escalates into a battle with its defenders and the Four-Tails' jinchūriki. Reports credit him with killing thirty-two jōnin and destroying more than half the village, earning him the title “Death God of the Dark Night” 77 78 80.

He later joins the Land of Wind campaign, survives Chiyo's poison through thunder purification, and negotiates compensation for a politically motivated mission to Kumogakure. His demands center on time and access to Konoha's forbidden-technique knowledge 83 88 93 95.

Land of Waves and Bloodline Research

Jing Xiu directs Sasori to take control of the Land of Waves, later developing its maritime trade, logistics, and weapons production. His research expands into Hashirama's cells, kekkei genkai, and the Ōtsutsuki bloodline 97 109.

His presence initially prevents the Uchiha's expected annihilation, but his relationship with Fugaku and Itachi later collapses into open conflict. He defeats them using Flying Thunder God and Feng Hou Qimen, removing Fugaku's Mangekyō before Obito intervenes 110 112 113.

Rinnegan Gestation and Later Confrontations

After investigating the Jashin Cult and encountering evidence of an unknown entity, Jing Xiu begins a major period of bodily refinement and Rinnegan integration. Kimimaro guards him in the Kamui Dimension until Obito, Black Zetsu, Itachi, and White Zetsu forces discover the location 118 121 124.

Still cultivating, he negotiates a truce with Kiyoteru Ōtsutsuki rather than interrupt his growth through an all-out battle. Later, he retrieves Sasori's remains, subdues Black Zetsu, and pursues Obito through Kamui. He explicitly declines to make the Five Kage his targets, distinguishing his objectives from those of Obito and Madara 127 133 135.
