History
Origins and Warring States Standing
The Uchiha trace their ancestry and Sharingan to Indra, whose statue is enshrined in a mountain temple. By the Warring States period, the clan possesses a thousand-year history and stands alongside the Senju as one of the shinobi world's two dominant clan powers 19 21 70.
Under Uchiha Tajima, the clan occupies territory along the Naka River, the largest tributary of the Shinano River. Its military positions include Eight-Banner Plain, Ueno Camp, and Greenleaf Cliff. The Hagoromo are its staunch allies, while the Senju and Hyuga oppose it 2 20.
The Ueno Disaster
After approximately half a year of all-out war against the Senju, the Uchiha rear is attacked at Ueno Camp. Three Senju squads and one Hyuga squad—twenty shinobi altogether—exploit its depleted defenses while twelve-year-old Madara commands the position 2.
The camp contains numerous Uchiha children, including Tajima's younger sons. Reinforcements find only Madara and Jing Xiu still breathing within the devastated camp, having rescued seven other children along the way. Three of Madara's younger brothers are lost in the attack 3 5 54.
The raid brings the existing war to an end but drives the Uchiha toward retaliation against the Hyuga. Tajima and the elders choose five-year-old Jing Xiu as bait, exploiting both his status as the clan head's son and his killing of Hyuga Chenxi 4 5.
Hyuga Conflict and Greenleaf Cliff
The renewed Uchiha–Hyuga conflict creates an opening for the Senju. With Tajima pursuing Hyuga Tennin, the elders disagree over whether to attack or defend the clan grounds. Jing Xiu warns Madara that losing Tajima could leave the Uchiha vulnerable to eventual absorption or extermination; evacuation east across the sea is proposed only as a last resort 17.
Tajima and Tennin ultimately agree to stop fighting each other and confront the Senju. At Greenleaf Cliff, Madara's breakthroughs help force a Senju retreat, but the Uchiha suffer greater overall losses despite their apparent victory 19 24 26 27.
During the subsequent uneasy peace, Madara and Jing Xiu negotiate with other clans. Young allied shinobi become guards and subordinates to Jing Xiu and Izuna, while the brothers restrict access to Jing Xiu's training methods to avoid provoking a coalition against the Uchiha 33.
Uzushio Crisis and Succession Struggle
The Senju's improving medical capabilities place the Uchiha at an increasing disadvantage. Tajima responds with a scheme that endangers Jing Xiu and Izuna while following Madara to safeguard the clan's future. During the resulting crisis, Tajima controls the Three-Tails as it devastates Uzushio Village, then fights Butsuma Senju 35 45 48.
After Tajima's death, the Second and Third Elders attempt to elect an acting clan leader. Hachijo and Hohara resist, and nearly half the attending jōnin leave with Hachijo to search for Tajima. A rumor subsequently accuses Madara of fleeing battle and causing his father's death 51.
Madara, Jing Xiu, and Black Wolf confront the four elders inside a Four Violet Flames Formation. Jing Xiu kills the Fourth Elder and traps Motoi in a lightning prison, while Madara battles First Elder Yamashiro 55.
Alliance and Konoha's Founding
Madara approaches Hashirama Senju seeking a temporary alliance against the Hyuga and Seven-Family Alliance. Hashirama instead proposes a lasting partnership to end the Warring States era, moving Madara with the possibility of preventing further losses like those at Ueno 54.
Their cooperation remains strained by conflict between their brothers. At Honnō-ji, Jing Xiu demands consequences for Tobirama's scheme against him. Madara and Hashirama leave to fight over the alliance's leadership, while Jing Xiu orders Izuna and the Uchiha forces to withdraw 60.
In his later account of Konoha's founding, Jing Xiu describes the settlement as Madara's compromise with the stronger Hashirama. He argues that Uchiha military strength secured the clan's survival and place in the village, while Tobirama's political maneuvering prevented Madara from receiving the promised position of First Hokage 112.
Fugaku's Leadership
Under Fugaku, the Uchiha defend Konoha's coastline and pursue the possibility of producing the Fourth Hokage through distinguished military service. Jing Xiu challenges this approach, arguing that military achievements alone will not overcome the clan's political exclusion 67 69.
After demonstrating superior Mangekyō Sharingan power, Jing Xiu allows Fugaku to remain clan head but takes the position of First Elder and veto authority. Their relationship deteriorates when Fugaku declines to support Jing Xiu against the Hokage faction 68 75.
Madara's name has meanwhile become taboo within the clan. The Uchiha deliberately downplay their strongest historical member because acknowledging him also recalls the humiliation of defeat by the Senju 69.
Massacre
During the massacre, Konoha's Anbu sweep through Uchiha clansmen on the perimeter under Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu. Obito slaughters members of the Konoha Military Police Force, while Itachi and Fugaku fight Jing Xiu inside the compound 112.
Jing Xiu defeats Fugaku and removes his Mangekyō Sharingan; Fugaku later dies from the confrontation. The clan compound is destroyed, and subsequent chapters refer to the Uchiha as wiped out. Jing Xiu later confronts Itachi over his slaughter of thousands of Uchiha, including ordinary people 113 123 135.
Organization and Leadership
Authority and Succession
- Clan head: Tajima declares that only the strongest Uchiha can become clan head. Madara is raised as Young Clan Leader, but Tajima also tests Jing Xiu and Izuna as potential successors from his branch 1 6.
- Elders: The clan is supposed to have five elders, whose combined authority can remove the clan head. Four participate in Tajima's council during the Hyuga operation 5.
- Factional balance: Without Tajima's overwhelming strength, Madara must accommodate competing factions to mobilize the clan 18 52.
- Jōnin assembly: The elders convene a jōnin meeting to select an acting leader during Tajima's absence, though substantial opposition prevents agreement 51.
- First Elder's veto: Jing Xiu obtains veto power under Fugaku rather than replacing him outright 68.

Military Units
- Hidden Ninja: A protective force answering exclusively to the clan head, with duties and capabilities resembling Konoha's later Anbu 5.
- Ninjutsu Squad: Battlefield unit capable of coordinated Fire Release attacks 21.
- Konoha Military Police Force: An Uchiha-associated institution whose personnel are attacked by Obito during the massacre 94 112.
Traditions and Values
- Glory and sacrifice: Tajima treats service to Uchiha glory as its own reward and considers even his children expendable for the clan's benefit 5 6.
- Respect for strength: Three-tomoe Sharingan wielders enjoy considerable standing. A stronger clansman can challenge the authority of the clan head, as Jing Xiu does to Fugaku 66 68.
- Child battlefield exposure: Taking children to war is described as a longstanding tradition, practiced by both Tajima and the later Fugaku 2.
- Pride in independent technique: Black Wolf refuses to copy enemy ninjutsu because he considers imitation a weakness; this is his personal interpretation of Uchiha pride, not a limitation of the Sharingan 11.
- Emotional reputation: The wider shinobi world regards the Sharingan as a cursed eye that can turn profound love into hatred. Madara's grief after Ueno advances his eyes from one tomoe to two 5 7.
Abilities and Skills
Sharingan
The clan's inherited ocular bloodline enhances perception and supports copying and genjutsu 11 49 70.
- Tracks rapid attacks and helps calculate evasive routes, including during sword combat 7 48.
- Can copy techniques and physical movements, though individual users may refuse to rely on this ability 11.
- Enables genjutsu such as Demonic Illusion: Shackling Stakes Technique, used by Tajima to immobilize Butsuma 48.
- Does not eliminate divided attention or blind spots; the Senju develop a coordinated Two-Person Kill tactic to exploit these weaknesses 13 23.
- Can be deactivated at will by Uchiha bloodline holders, unlike non-Uchiha transplant recipients 67.
Mangekyō Sharingan
Advanced ocular powers vary between wielders; documented techniques include Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo 113 124 131.
- Amaterasu: Black flames used by both Fugaku and Itachi 113.
- Tsukuyomi: Used by Itachi against Kimimaro 124.
- Susanoo: A chakra manifestation used for protection, weapons, and physical reinforcement 102 125 131.
- Limitations: Heavy expenditure of ocular power causes bleeding and deteriorating eyesight; Itachi eventually faces blindness 123 131.
Izanagi
A forbidden Sharingan technique used to overturn otherwise fatal outcomes 14 49.
- Black Wolf survives Hyuga Kiyomei's killing attack but loses the use of one Sharingan 14 16.
- Tajima restores his injuries and chakra during his final battle with Butsuma 49.
- Itachi's later use of Izanagi and another forbidden ocular technique leaves him blind in both eyes 135.
Fire Release and Swordsmanship
The Uchiha combine offensive ninjutsu, skilled blade work, and Sharingan-assisted analysis 43 48.
- Great Fireball Technique: Described as the clan's most famous Fire Release ninjutsu 55.
- Majestic Destroyer Flame: Identified as a signature Uchiha Fire Release technique 21.
- Half-Moon Slash: A secret sword technique producing a large crescent-shaped energy attack; used by Tajima, Yamashiro, and later Itachi 19 55 93.
- Lightning Release: Historically less developed in the clan's inherited repertoire. Jing Xiu helps Izuna develop the Chidori series to complement Uchiha swordsmanship 43 45 48.
Restricted Training Methods
Jing Xiu introduces methods beyond the clan's existing shinobi arts 4 33.
- Teaches Baji Fist and the Golden Light Mantra to Madara and Izuna 4.
- Trains selected allied guards in body conditioning and basic breathing methods 33.
- Refuses clan-wide dissemination with his brothers because sudden Uchiha expansion could unite the Senju, Hyuga, and other clans against them 33.
Equipment and Holdings
- Uchiha Gunbai: Crafted by Indra from a God Tree branch. It reflects chakra attacks, including small Tailed Beast Bombs, and is wielded by Tajima and later Madara 19 102.
- Clan storehouse: Holds supplies Tajima permits Jing Xiu to access for the Hyuga bait mission 5.
- Naka River clan grounds: The Warring States headquarters, including the council hall 20 51.
- Konoha compound: A central-village residential and training area, destroyed during the massacre 93 123.
- Land of Hot Water concessions: Izuna secures operating rights to two casinos and two bathhouses in exchange for the service of two Uchiha Special Jōnin 41.
