| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| One-Tomoe Sharingan | 5 | Retrospectively identified as the state of his eyes before the losses at Ueno. |
| Golden Light Mantra practitioner | 4 | Already practicing Jing Xiu’s technique; recognizes its body-strengthening, offensive, and defensive properties. |
| Two-Tomoe Sharingan | 5 | Evolves through the emotional devastation of losing three younger brothers at Ueno. |
| Three-Tomoe Sharingan | 20 22 | Displayed during the Hyuga alliance negotiations. Although recently evolved, its ocular power soon matches that of an ordinary elite Uchiha. |

| Mangekyō Sharingan | 56 | Awakened when Tajima sacrifices his life. Jing Xiu seals it afterward, leaving Madara dissatisfied with his comparatively weaker Three-Tomoe Sharingan. |
| Mangekyō Sharingan — unsealed | 60 | Jing Xiu removes the seal with Twin Hands. Madara’s power surges so dramatically that even Hyuga Tennin at his peak would not dare face him. |
| Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan — alternate-spacetime counterpart | 119 | Established retrospectively as the predecessor to the elderly Madara’s Rinnegan; its acquisition is not described. |
| Rinnegan — alternate-spacetime counterpart | 101 119 | Awakened in his twilight years. His insufficient life force leaves the eyes underdeveloped, so he places them in Nagato to be nourished by the latter’s vitality. |
History
Childhood and the Battle of Ueno
Tajima entrusted Madara with caring for his younger brothers while preparing him to inherit leadership of the Uchiha. Madara’s ambition to become the strongest was rooted in his desire to protect his family and end the chaotic age 1.
At twelve, Madara was already nearly as strong as Tajima without the Sharingan, though he lacked his father’s experience and control. During the attack on Ueno, he fought despite a numbed arm and overwhelming enemy numbers. Reinforcements found him unconscious but still standing with his blade as support 2 3.
Three of his younger brothers died in the attack. Their deaths evolved his Sharingan to two tomoe, while his courage and responsibility earned him permission to observe clan assemblies 4 5.
Greenleaf Cliff and Ryūchi Cave
With the Uchiha weakened, Madara accepted Jing Xiu’s argument for an alliance with the Hyuga. He sought First Elder Uchiha Yamashiro’s assistance and began learning how to balance the clan’s competing factions 18.
At Greenleaf Cliff, Madara exchanged alliance agreements with Hyuga Kiyomei just as a Senju-engineered flood threatened their position. He organized the Uchiha defense, assigning the Hyuga to strike the Senju rear. His first encounter with Hashirama took place during this battle, where he used staged detonations of Jing Xiu’s explosive tags to disrupt the Senju advance 20 21.
Butsuma Senju later lured Madara into an ambush and nearly killed him. While his heartbeat and breathing had ceased, his chakra continued circulating. Recalling Jing Xiu’s teachings, Madara broke through in the Golden Light Mantra and briefly fought with an unconscious, senjutsu-enhanced body 22 23 24 25.
Madara subsequently awakened in Ryūchi Cave. After passing Tagitsuhime’s trial, he refused the White Snake Sage’s offer of a summoning contract, declaring that his own strength could bring peace. The sage then sent a small white-scaled snake into his arm. Distrusting her, he chose to seek Jing Xiu’s help rather than demand an explanation 25 26.
Returning to battle, Madara’s golden light made ordinary weapons and ninjutsu ineffective against him. Afterward, he reviewed the campaign with Tajima and reunited with his brothers, allowing Jing Xiu to examine his altered chakra 26 27.
Diplomacy and the Whirlpool Rescue
At Kinzawa Castle, Madara worked with Jing Xiu to negotiate with other clans. His experience at Greenleaf Cliff had made him more conscious of the limits of Uchiha strength and the importance of smaller clans in maintaining the balance against the Senju 30 32 33.
When Jing Xiu and Izuna were endangered in the Land of Whirlpools, Madara gathered supplies and rushed to their aid. He fought Uzumaki Ashina and carried the poisoned Jing Xiu toward the devastated Uzushio Village 41 48.
The brothers later fought Hoshigakure’s leaders. Jing Xiu entrusted Madara with the sealed Star from Beyond the Heavens as an emergency power source. Madara accepted it after recognizing the gap between himself and the shinobi world’s strongest fighters—and his inability to protect Izuna through strength alone 50.
Clan Leadership and the Dream of Peace
At seventeen, Madara approached Hashirama seeking a temporary alliance. Their discussion of the brothers they had lost moved him toward Hashirama’s broader dream of ending the Warring States Era through cooperation between their clans 54.
After becoming clan head, Madara confronted elders who continued to restrict his authority. Yamashiro offered to let him become leader in fact as well as name after ten years, but his admission that he should have killed Jing Xiu at Ueno provoked Madara into attacking. Madara fought him with golden light and the blade Setting Sun 55.
During the ensuing prolonged war against the Hyuga, Madara and Hashirama grew rapidly through repeated clashes with Hyuga Tennin. Their personal bond deepened, although the Senju’s expanding network of subordinate clans gradually outpaced the Uchiha’s resources 56 57.
At Honnō-ji, Madara ignored the proposed celebration of victory to demand answers about Jing Xiu’s disappearance. Once Jing Xiu returned and unsealed his Mangekyō Sharingan, Madara agreed to duel Hashirama in the Endless Wasteland to settle their grievances and determine the alliance’s leader 60.
The Elderly Counterpart
In a later alternate spacetime, Jing Xiu found an elderly Madara living before the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Using Yomi and the Body Tempering Furnace’s inner landscape, he showed Madara memories of their shared life in his original spacetime. Madara accepted that Jing Xiu was, in that world, genuinely his younger brother 100 101.
Jing Xiu explained that Black Zetsu had manipulated Madara’s Eye of the Moon Plan to revive Kaguya. Madara agreed to let him take the Rinnegan held by Nagato, supplied segments of the statue’s fingers, and entrusted Obito’s training to him 101.
Near death, Madara chose to help Jing Xiu return to the real alternate world rather than rely solely on Infinite Tsukuyomi’s illusion. He expended his remaining vitality in a final spar, demonstrated Yasaka Magatama, and died after asking Jing Xiu to give Izuna his regards. Jing Xiu later continued considering ways to resurrect him 102 103 117 134.
Appearance
- Sharingan: Scarlet eyes whose tomoe develop with his emotional losses and growing power 5 20.
- Elderly counterpart: Initially immobile, stooped, and heavily wrinkled, with a single Three-Tomoe Sharingan 100 102.
- Final battle: Consumes his remaining vitality to straighten his back and temporarily regain a youthful face 102.
Personality
Madara is proud, domineering, and convinced that overwhelming strength can end disorder. As a young heir, he dismisses the elders’ interference and imagines the shinobi world bowing before him. Battlefield setbacks temper this arrogance: he learns to respect useful advice, reflect on mistakes, and recognize political constraints without abandoning his ambition 1 4 18 27 33.
His affection for his brothers consistently overrides prestige and military opportunity. He abandons a chance to fight Hyuga Tennin to bring Jing Xiu home, openly declares that Jing Xiu’s and Izuna’s wishes are his own, and does not pry into Jing Xiu’s secrets because he trusts him. Even his elderly counterpart grants Jing Xiu requests that threaten his own resurrection prospects, showing concern rather than fear at the end of his life 16 28 32 103.
Abilities & Skills
Golden Light Mantra
Jing Xiu teaches Madara a cultivation technique that combines his chakra with external natural chakra to produce protective golden light 4 23.
- Strengthens his body and combines offense with defense 4.
- Coats ordinary swords to increase their sharpness and durability 26.
- Forms large fists, feet, and other offensive constructs 26 50.
- Protects him against ordinary ninja tools and ninjutsu 26.
- Cannot yet form functional wings or grant flight during the Hoshigakure battle 50.
Sharingan and Susanoo
Madara’s Sharingan progresses through multiple forms, with emotional trauma driving key awakenings 5 56.
- His recently evolved Three-Tomoe Sharingan develops ocular power comparable to an ordinary elite Uchiha’s 22.
- His Mangekyō provides power vastly beyond his Three-Tomoe state, but remains sealed for years at Jing Xiu’s insistence 56.
- The elderly counterpart can use skeletal Susanoo despite possessing only one Three-Tomoe Sharingan 102.
- Yasaka Magatama: Launches linked pale-blue tomoe as a devastating ranged attack. His final, weakened version contains only three tomoe, yet Jing Xiu judges it beyond his ability to counter directly 103.
Natural Chakra and Senjutsu
Madara briefly acquires senjutsu chakra through his near-death Golden Light Mantra breakthrough 24 25.
- The initial surge grants tremendous power while he remains unconscious 25.
- Natural chakra cleanses his muscles and marrow, making future absorption easier 25.
- Jing Xiu later teaches him the principles of senjutsu and the Three Great Sage Lands; Madara considers Ryūchi Cave’s emphasis on spiritual energy particularly suitable for the Uchiha 28.
- This experience is not presented as mastery of a Sage Land’s Sage Mode 25 28.
Fire Release and Close Combat
Madara combines large-scale Fire Release with swordsmanship, taijutsu, and rapid movement 21 26 55.
- Majestic Destroyer Flame: Used against Hashirama’s opening attack at Greenleaf Cliff 21.
- Great Fireball Technique: Used against Yamashiro and during his elderly counterpart’s final spar 55 102.
- Fire dragons: Unleashes more than a dozen during his near-death breakthrough 24.
- Body Flicker Technique: Used to reach his brothers quickly and reposition across a battlefield 5 26.
- His elderly counterpart pressures Jing Xiu through alternating weapon strikes, taijutsu, and ninjutsu, exposing the latter’s lack of a decisive finishing attack 102.
Command and Diplomacy
- Coordinates the defense of Greenleaf Cliff around terrain, flood conditions, and an allied rear attack 20.
- Uses explosive tags in timed batches rather than a single detonation to increase casualties 21 22.
- Learns to balance Uchiha factions and seek specialists and resources through clan negotiations 18 33.
- Recognizes that strengthening the Uchiha too openly could drive the Senju and Hyuga into an opposing coalition 33.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Tachi: His early battlefield weapon; later draws one from a Devouring Pouch bead against Butsuma 2 22.
- Setting Sun: Blade given to him by Jing Xiu, used against Yamashiro 55.
- Devouring Pouches / Devouring Pouch Orb: Storage artifacts supplied by Jing Xiu 6 50.
- Golden Light Jewels: Received from Jing Xiu before the latter’s mission 6.
- Natural-chakra-infused explosive tags: Used for the Greenleaf Cliff ambush 21.
- Star from Beyond the Heavens: A sealed, radiation-emitting power source kept as an emergency trump card; no use by Madara is shown 50.
- Uchiha Gunbai and scythe: Wielded by his elderly counterpart in the final spar. The gunbai generates wind that strengthens his flames 102.
Relationships
- Jing Xiu — Younger brother, trusted adviser, and Golden Light Mantra teacher. Madara protects his autonomy and accepts his unexplained knowledge without prying 4 28 32.
- Izuna — Younger brother and student. Madara trains him, responds affectionately to his demands for attention, and prioritizes his safety 17 27 50.
- Uchiha Tajima — Father and predecessor. Tajima cultivates his leadership potential, while Madara’s family-first priorities sometimes disappoint him. Tajima’s sacrifice triggers Madara’s Mangekyō awakening 1 16 27 56.
- Hashirama Senju — Battlefield rival who becomes a close ally through their shared dream of peace. Their unresolved rivalry ultimately leads to a duel over alliance leadership 21 54 57 60.
- Uchiha Yamashiro — Initially a valued political mentor; later an opponent whose continued control of clan affairs and hostility toward Jing Xiu lead to open combat 18 55.
- Butsuma Senju — Enemy clan head who recognizes Madara’s potential and nearly kills him to prevent the Uchiha’s future dominance 22 23.
- Black Zetsu — Manipulates the elderly counterpart while claiming to embody his will. Jing Xiu’s explanation gives Madara a more convincing account of Zetsu’s suspicious behavior 101.
- Obito Uchiha — Boy entrusted by the elderly Madara to Jing Xiu for training; later remains important to Jing Xiu’s plans for Madara’s resurrection 101 134.
Notable Quotes
“I will defeat you and take the position of clan leader from your hands!” 1
“No matter when or where, whether it is Jing Xiu or Izuna, their will is my will, the will of Madara Uchiha.” 32
“I hope you make it back safely. Remember to give Izuna my regards!” 103
Trivia
- Jing Xiu later impersonates Madara when joining Daybreak as an adviser; those actions are not Madara’s own 105.
- In Jing Xiu’s account of Konoha’s founding, Madara compromises with the stronger Hashirama rather than risk the Uchiha’s annihilation. Jing Xiu presents that choice—and Madara’s military strength—as central to the clan’s survival 112.
