Background / History

Family and Sunagakure

Chiyo remembered her grandson Sasori as an obedient, sensible child. His parents’ tragic deaths fostered his resentment toward the Fourth Kazekage and Sunagakure, eventually leading him to defect and join Akatsuki. Chiyo understood that the village had treated him unfairly, but rejected his use of that suffering to justify harming innocent people 292 293 294.

After Sasori’s defection, Chiyo preserved and improved the puppets he had made from his parents, naming the pair Father and Mother. She also painstakingly taught Kankuro 293 341.

Appearance

  • Build: A short, elderly woman with a small frame 285 287.
  • Hands: Both hands have been modified into puppet mechanisms and are normally wrapped in bandages. Their metal construction allows her to catch sharp weapons without suffering ordinary flesh wounds 289 327.
  • Clothing and storage: Wears robes with wide sleeves and carries summoning scrolls inside them 293 327 328.

Personality

Chiyo is blunt, suspicious, and difficult to intimidate. She immediately questions Master of Open Stratagems’ uncertain intelligence and warns that she will hold him accountable if he deceives her. Her standing also gives her considerable authority among the allied fighters: Sakura invokes her name to stop an argument before she even arrives 286 306.

Her sharp tongue coexists with genuine tenderness. She encourages Sakura to contribute without demanding too much of herself, repeatedly protects her, and becomes distraught when Sasori’s poison puts her life in danger. After receiving Sasori’s ashes, Chiyo thanks Sakura and gently urges her out of the rain 289 291 295.

Chiyo’s decision to kill Sasori reflects both her rejection of his crimes and her love for him. She believes his suffering and bloodshed cannot continue, yet asks Sakura to help because she fears she cannot deliver the final blow herself. His death leaves her with so little hope that her wholehearted support for the rescue operation is understood by the other experts as a willingness to die 294 316.

Her concern for Gaara can undermine her judgment. She sends dozens of potential helpers away from her fight with Sasori, prioritizing Gaara’s rescue, and later abandons her strongest fighting style while enraged at Mujo. The latter mistake gives Mujo time to activate the prisoners’ restrictions 288 340 341.

Abilities & Skills

Puppet Art

Chiyo specializes in precise, agile puppet control. The narration judges her finesse superior to Sasori’s, while identifying his advantages as puppet construction and the number he can operate 290 292.

  • Operates more than twenty puppets simultaneously while keeping their movements exceptionally nimble 289.
  • Controls the Chikamatsu Collection of Ten Puppets with one hand when her other arm is occupied 327.
  • Uses puppets to perform synchronized hand seals and joint techniques 289 290 327.
  • Maintains ten puppets while separately controlling Sakura’s movements and hands with a thread from her mouth 290.
  • Suffers substantial mental strain when directing a much larger puppet formation, reducing her ability to watch for incoming attacks 328.

Chakra Threads

Chiyo’s fine threads function as control lines, restraints, and cutting weapons 290 327 351.

  • Living-person control: Guides Sakura’s body and fingers to dismantle Sasori’s back mechanisms 290.
  • Counter-control: Splits a thread into three strands and entangles Sasori’s thread before he can seize Sakura 290.
  • Magnet Release resistance: Uses tough, nonmetallic threads to bind the Third Kazekage puppet without allowing its Magnet Release to affect them 292.
  • Restraint and dismemberment: Immobilizes Mujo through his joints and vital points, severs his thumb, and later cuts through Hidan’s flesh and bones 341 351.
  • Multiple release points: Sends threads from her fingers, sleeves, mouth, and puppets 291 327 351.

Light-Shield Techniques

Through Puppet Technique: Machine Light Shield Seal, Chiyo channels chakra into her puppets to create defensive light shields. She also uses Mechanical Light Shield Block through her modified hands 290 327.

  • Joins individual shields into a sphere that traps Sasori’s lower body and intercepts his needle attacks 290.
  • Expands a shield into a curtain capable of withstanding the explosion of Sasori’s outer body 291.
  • Contracts and reshapes the shield into cutting sections, decapitating and dismembering Hidan 325 326.
  • Encloses herself and the ten puppets in a barrier while charging through the Ghost Lantern Guards’ weapons and ninjutsu 339.
  • A hastily formed hand shield is weaker: Hidan’s scythe cuts through it, forcing her to catch the weapon with her puppet palms 327.

Offensive Formations and Self-Destruction

  • Chakra blades: Commands the ten puppets to launch fan-shaped chakra blades, sending Hidan flying and breaking his scythe 327.
  • Rectangular formation: Works with Sakura to trap Sasori as Father and Mother pierce his puppet core 294.
  • Mass puppet deployment: Summons a large formation incorporating Crow, Black Ant, and Ibuse to intercept Hidan’s attack 328.
  • Puppet self-destruction: Detonates every deployed puppet except the Chikamatsu Collection of Ten Puppets after receiving a fatal injury, destroying a section of Hozuki Castle’s battlements 329.

Perception, Evasion, and Limitations

  • Detects unusual chakra fluctuations ahead of the advancing force and notices Kakashi’s abnormal condition upon approaching his battlefield 287 306.
  • Uses the Substitution Technique to evade the Third Kazekage puppet while relocating with Sakura 291.
  • Recognizes Black Zetsu’s danger and questions him to buy time, but cannot escape the Ultimate Black Domain before it removes her sight and environmental perception 343.
  • Is physically weaker than Hidan and recognizes that close combat sacrifices her advantage as a puppet specialist 327.
  • Has comparatively modest offensive power among Kage Level fighters of equivalent strength 339.
  • Cannot break open Master of Open Stratagems’ chakra-absorbing prison cell; a Hidden Jun Village player instead picks its lock 320.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Chikamatsu Collection of Ten Puppets: Ten white-robed puppets deployed through White Secret Technique: Chikamatsu Ten Puppets. Their unusually durable material can naturally repair small punctures 289 328.
  • Father and Mother: Sasori’s parent puppets, preserved and improved by Chiyo. Their arms become blades during the fatal embrace with Sasori; Sakura subsequently burns them with his body 293 294.
  • Additional puppets: A reserve force summoned from a large scroll, including Crow, Black Ant, and Ibuse. Their materials are inferior to those of the Chikamatsu collection 328.
  • Summoning scrolls: Carried within her robes to store and deploy puppets 293 328.
  • Sasori’s ashes: Collected by Sakura in a medical vial and given to Chiyo as a keepsake 295.
  • Contract-based resurrection access: Chiyo signs Master of Open Stratagems’ teleportation contract and later benefits from his Soulwood Casket. The casket is his equipment, not her own 316 338 347.

Relationships

  • Sasori of the Red Sands — Her long-lost grandson. Chiyo initially fights him without recognizing him, then learns his identity after his outer body is destroyed. She ultimately helps kill him while grieving deeply 291 294.
  • Sakura Haruno — Battle partner whom Chiyo guides and protects. Sakura helps defeat Sasori and preserves his ashes for her 289 290 294 295.
  • Gaara — Sunagakure’s missing successor and the central focus of her rescue efforts. Finding him drives her participation in the Land of Rain expedition and Hozuki Castle siege 286 292 319 353.
  • Kankuro — A younger Sunagakure shinobi she personally taught. Seeing him burned by Mujo’s restrictions provokes intense grief and anger 341.
  • Master of Open Stratagems — An ally she repeatedly distrusts but supports for Gaara’s sake. She signs his contract, protects his force, and insists that he fulfill his promise to help search for Gaara 286 316 320 353.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Allied fighter whose willingness to risk his life earns her praise, despite her exasperation at Deidara’s escape 306.
  • Hidan — An enemy whose blood curse kills her. After resurrection, she returns to dismember and seal him away 329 338 351 352.
  • Old Mr. Yu — Chiyo expresses gratitude for his kindness and concern over his failure to revive. She requests updates while preparing to resume her search 354 355.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Joining the Gaara Rescue Expedition

Chiyo arrives asking for Gaara’s whereabouts and confronts Master of Open Stratagems over his claim that Gaara was taken to Hozuki Castle Prison. His qualified assurance that Gaara is somewhere in the Land of Rain persuades her to join, though she explicitly warns him against deception 285 286.

At the border, she opposes splitting the expedition into three infiltration groups, preferring to concentrate its superior numbers. After entering the Land of Rain, she leaves the column to investigate unusual chakra fluctuations 286 287.

Battle with Sasori

Sasori prevents Chiyo from pursuing Deidara, so she directs the arriving allies toward Gaara and recruits Sakura instead. Their coordinated attacks dismantle Sasori’s outer body, but his poisoned counterattack nearly kills Sakura. Chiyo administers the antidote pills from Sakura’s bag before confronting the Third Kazekage puppet and recognizing her grandson 288 289 290 291.

Her ten puppets hold off Sasori’s hundred-plus Red Shadow Puppets while Sakura takes on the Third Kazekage puppet. Chiyo then summons Father and Mother, causing Sasori’s control to collapse. With Sakura supplying chakra to a formation, the parent puppets pierce his core as he embraces them. Chiyo leaves Sakura to burn the bodies and later accepts the ashes she collects 292 293 294 295.

Hozuki Castle Infiltration and First Death

After Gaara disappears again, Chiyo supports Master of Open Stratagems’ infiltration plan, signs his teleportation contract, and helps secure the prison. She agrees to pursue the injured Mujo in hopes of learning Gaara’s location and removing the captives’ restrictions 306 316 319 322.

Hidan interrupts her pursuit and promises information if she defeats him. Although she repeatedly dismembers him, his regeneration keeps him fighting. He eventually obtains blood from a scratch on her cheek and uses Curse Technique: Death Controlling Possessed Blood to inflict a fatal chest injury. Chiyo detonates her remaining ordinary puppets before losing consciousness, then later emerges resurrected from the Soulwood Casket 325 327 328 329 338.

Mujo, Black Zetsu, and the Nine-Tails

Back inside the castle, Chiyo overwhelms the injured Mujo but becomes reckless when he claims to hold Sunagakure’s successors. He activates restrictions that set Kankuro, Temari, and other youths on fire. Chiyo severs his thumb, restrains him, and cuts off his tongue to prevent another activation, then urges Master of Open Stratagems to secure resurrection contracts with the victims 339 340 341.

Black Zetsu subsequently interferes with her control of Mujo and traps the battlefield in the Ultimate Black Domain. An unfamiliar white-haired elder steps in front of Chiyo when Black Zetsu attempts to kill her. The rampaging Nine-Tails later crushes both Chiyo and Old Yu Next Door; Chiyo returns through the Soulwood Casket and attempts to attack Black Zetsu, but the beast blocks her path 342 343 347.

After Naruto is restored to human form, Chiyo is sent toward the front line. She uses her puppets against Kakuzu while personally cutting Hidan apart with threads. She then has Hidan’s head sealed in a special box and orders a Sunagakure shinobi to bury it in a barren place, preventing his recovery 349 351 352.

With Hozuki Castle fallen, Chiyo presses Master of Open Stratagems to resume searching for Gaara. Hidan’s claim that Gaara’s Tailed Beast has already been extracted makes her privately frantic. When Old Mr. Yu fails to revive, she agrees to let Master of Open Stratagems remain behind and asks him to meet her near Amegakure afterward 353 354 355.

Trivia

  • Chiyo mistakes the players’ official forums for a kind of Anbu platform 355.
  • Despite personally benefiting from resurrection, she knows little about the Soulwood Casket’s operating rules and questions whether a long delay necessarily means someone cannot return 355.
