Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Ordinary civilian 54 Began with 0 chakra, no chakra nature, no village position, and 5 contribution points.
Initial chakra and ninjutsu acquisition 67 Used earnings from cooperative village work to purchase chakra and ninjutsu, then led his followers in group monster hunting. No formal ninja rank was specified.
Chunin 73 His twenty-odd followers transferred 70% of their operation rewards to him. He spent nearly all the pooled contribution points on chakra and high-level ninjutsu, reaching Chunin within a few days of joining.
Early Jonin 161 Rewards from two Ninja Village Wars, supplemented by contributions from followers, brought him to Early Jonin, close to Mid Jonin.

By the Hozuki Castle operation, his accumulated earnings could have taken him to Elite Jonin if spent entirely on personal chakra. Instead, he invested heavily in preparing his group teleportation technique; Elite Jonin was not a confirmed advancement 308.

Background / History

Real-world military background

Liu Dong is a military-academy graduate serving as a staff officer at the XX General Staff Department. Ye Chen discovered this background through the system’s personnel search and marked him as a priority player to watch. With war against Kusagakure approaching, Ye Chen considered giving him an opportunity to develop as a commander 55 56.

Organizing the newcomers

Master of Open Stratagems first attracted attention by opposing a proposal to turn public opinion against veteran players. He argued that lasting hostility would undermine a game built around shared development, defense, and scenario battles—and would eventually harm the newcomers once they became veterans themselves 54.

His alternative was to work with established players. Newcomers could transport supplies, clear rubbish, and collect loot for players holding village positions, earning payment without competing directly for scarce missions. He then organized purchases and group hunts, while veterans provided protection in exchange for a share of the proceeds 55 67.

Once this arrangement became profitable, he proposed infiltrating Kusagakure through a false defection. During his capture and interrogation, he memorized facilities and routes, acted out grievances against Hidden Jun Village, and negotiated with Bibiye using information about player resurrection. His account mixed genuine information with a fabricated explanation of a destructible resurrection device; Bibiye spared him but placed the group under Anbu surveillance 67 69 70.

Although he did not participate in the subsequent operation, his followers credited him with devising the scheme. Their reward transfers financed his rapid rise to Chunin, which he then used to publicize his team 72 73.

Founding the Glory Legion

His eloquence and earlier achievements earned him election as commander of the Hidden Jun Battle Group. He pushed players to practice coordinated Rasengan attacks, though maintaining discipline proved difficult when new shop offerings distracted them 84.

When official legion registration became available, he persuaded supporters to pool the fee, consulted them on the name Glory Legion, and registered the contributors as key members. The legion received an empty plot as its base, and he immediately began advertising and recruiting 91 92.

By Chapter 93, the legion contained 135 players, including most veterans, and was divided into five squads 93.

Squad Leader(s) Function
Reconnaissance Falcon's Eye Scouting and intelligence gathering 93 121
Logistics Dai Xiaomei Logistical support 93
Vanguard Corpse Bearer and Bullfighting Master Front-line fighting 93 110
Central Command Master of Open Stratagems Coordination, command, and deployment 93
Cavalry Emperor of Sinking Mounted operations; information and intelligence relay during the campaign 93 141

Kusagakure campaign

The campaign exposed the limits of his authority over players. Disorganized retreats forced him to bring the Central Army Squad forward to support the vanguard, and he struggled to keep the legion functioning through constant communication 110.

After the Village Chief’s apparent capture, his real-world superior threatened to dismiss him unless he brought the chief back safely. Returning to the game, he stopped an argument among players and used Falcon's Eye’s reconnaissance map to plan a diversion outside Kusagakure while elite players infiltrated from the flank 120 121.

He activated the Cowhide War Drum to strengthen the force, but the enemy’s main body remained inside the village and the infiltration team was exposed. After concluding that the Village Chief’s capture was part of a larger plan, he redirected the legion into Kusagakure and ordered combined Rasengan attacks against its defenders 122 126 130 131.

Tournament and village defense

During the Chunin Tournament, he used the Telescope Technique to observe fighting from a safer position and coordinate allies remotely. When the event escalated, he gathered contestants into a mass force, promising opportunities to defeat powerful enemies and earn war merits 185 186 197 198.

For a later village-defense operation, he proposed bringing the front and rear lines together through a supported withdrawal and an advancing main force. Old Yu Next Door challenged the danger of encirclement; Master of Open Stratagems acknowledged the risk and explained personnel assignments that also incorporated Ye Chen. Ye Chen approved of his deployment arrangements 214 215.

He subsequently organized the Glory Legion against Amegakure mercenaries and Orochimaru’s forces. When Deidara and Sasori captured Gaara, he opposed fighting both Kage-level enemies alongside the mercenaries, instead prioritizing the encirclement of the mercenary force 237 262.

Hozuki Castle rescue

After losing contact with the vanguard in the Land of Rain, he ordered the other squads to slow down, disperse, conceal themselves, and consolidate intelligence. Learning that imprisoned players could neither use chakra nor respawn, he sought outside experts by claiming Sasuke Uchiha and Gaara were held in Hozuki Castle 276 278.

He persuaded Granny Chiyo to join by combining an uncertain prison-location report with the firmer claim that Gaara remained somewhere in the Land of Rain. She warned him against deception and initially opposed his plan to divide the force, but later recognized that his dispersed approach had reduced the danger of losing everyone to one ambush 286 307.

At Hozuki Castle, he led fifteen followers across the iron-chain bridge and provoked Mujo into capturing them. Once imprisoned, he activated the Allied Shinobi Forces Technique despite his sealed chakra, filling the corridor with reinforcements. He then offered 50,000 contribution points to anyone who could open his cell; a player successfully picked the lock 317 318 319 320.

Mujo’s Heavenly Prison restrictions disrupted the escape plan. Chiyo rebuked him for showing anxiety, prompting him to apologize to the prisoners and restore his composure. The discovery that Soulwood Casket resurrection produced bodies free of the original restrictions gave the prisoners a route to freedom, though the casket’s limited resurrections made their apparent fearlessness unsustainable 321 323.

During the later fighting, he deployed the casket to bring Chiyo back into action and risked entering flames to collect blood or bodily fluids from burning youths for rescue. He eventually remained in the rear to coordinate while Chiyo and Yamato led stronger fighters forward 338 342 349.

Afterward, he privately favored claiming the island for Hidden Jun Village rather than allowing other factions to establish intelligence outposts. He deferred an answer to Chiyo until he could consult the Village Chief, then learned that Old Mr. Yu could no longer be revived and explained the reported problem to her 354.

Appearance

Master of Open Stratagems is a young man who wears glasses, with his player ID displayed above his head 54.

  • Frequently adjusts his glasses while speaking 54 120.
  • Clasps his hands behind his back and paces while explaining or developing plans 54 307.

Personality

He is charismatic, theatrical, and highly conscious of an audience. He enjoys praise, deliberately builds anticipation before revealing plans, and uses speeches, public chat, and reward discussions to attract followers or keep members engaged. His followers’ growing trust genuinely moves him, even as he actively cultivates their admiration 55 67 92 140.

His commitment to cooperation is practical rather than selfless: he recognizes that good relations, pooled resources, and coordinated attacks produce better returns than internal conflict. He also openly pursues contribution points, war merits, and system rewards, including during dangerous rescue work 54 67 198 342.

He can become smug or overconfident, but is capable of accepting correction. Old Yu’s tactical questioning makes him immediately respectful, while Chiyo’s criticism helps him recover after the prison restrictions undermine his plan. His rivalry with Corpse Bearer stems from youthful pride rather than sustained hostility 140 215 321.

Abilities & Skills

Military Strategy and Command

His real-world staff training supports his knowledge of deployment, formations, and operational planning 55 56.

  • Resource planning: Allocates early purchases and builds mutually profitable arrangements between novice and veteran players 55 67.
  • Combined operations: Coordinates diversions, infiltration teams, squad deployments, and attacks from inside and outside enemy positions 121 130 319 322.
  • Echelon attacks: Directs player formations to launch coordinated Rasenshuriken attacks in timed waves 263.
  • Limitations: Player indiscipline can undermine his plans, and overwhelming individual strength can leave him without an immediate countermeasure 79 110.

Persuasion and Deception

He combines rhetoric, acting, selective disclosure, and incentives to influence players and ninja 69 70 286.

  • Feigns persecution, gratitude, and emotional separation from his companions during the Kusagakure infiltration 69 70.
  • Uses carefully qualified claims about Gaara to recruit Chiyo without proving that Gaara is actually inside Hozuki Castle 286.
  • Uses chat controls and concrete reward opportunities to manage discussions and motivate large groups 278 198.

Rasengan and Collaborative Ninjutsu

He personally demonstrates A-rank Rasengan and trains players to combine their attacks 74 84.

  • Commands massed Rasengan formations against Kusagakure’s stronger defenders 131.
  • Joins his infiltration group’s combined Rasengan defense against Hozuki Castle’s Water Release attack 317.
  • The early combined attacks are described as collaborative ninjutsu, still short of full cooperation ninjutsu 131.

Wind Release: Rasenshuriken

He purchases and successfully tests the S-rank Wind Release: Rasenshuriken 84.

  • Identifies its greater throwing range, explosive effect, and stability compared with Rasengan 84.
  • A single use nearly exhausts his chakra at the time of acquisition, leading him to treat it as a potential corps-wide trump card 84.
  • His village test causes property damage, earning a minor demerit, a 1,000-point deduction, and an order to repair the site 84.

Allied Shinobi Forces Technique

An S-rank group teleportation technique that summons designated allied ninja to his location, ignoring distance and terrain 197 308 319.

  • Guides itself after activation, allowing him to bring reinforcements directly into Hozuki Castle’s prison corridor 308 319.
  • Can be triggered through a special activation method even while his body’s chakra is sealed 308 319.
  • Requires substantial chakra investment beforehand and has an exceptionally long cooldown 308.
  • Makes his effectiveness heavily dependent on his allies: he is described as the weakest of Hidden Jun Village’s Jonin players in personal strength, but increasingly dangerous with more experts available 197.

Telescope Technique

Uses a special crystal ball to observe distant scenes 185.

  • Watches battles without approaching concealed experts from other villages 185 186.
  • Supports remote command and coordination across separate battlefields 186.
