History
Rookie Career and Arrival in Wano
Ace first attracts attention as a rookie entering the Grand Line. Newspapers subsequently credit him with defeating the Shichibukai Hanafuda, although King identifies Doflamingo as the person responsible for Hanafuda’s death 5 12.
By the time the Spade Pirates reach Wano through the Kuri waterfall, Ace’s bounty exceeds 200 million Beli. He intends to defeat Kaido, claim the title of strongest, and eventually seize the Pirate King’s treasure to prove his existence to the world 48 49.
In Amigasa Village, starving residents tie up his crew and take their supplies. Ace allows them to eat, frees himself afterward, and asks for dessert instead of retaliating. He befriends the villagers and tries weaving conical hats, accidentally setting his work on fire 48.
After Tama explains that Orochi took the village’s adults away and sent them to Kaido, Ace promises to bring them back. The Spade Pirates then sail for Onigashima 49.
Defeat by Good and the Ransom Contract
At Onigashima, Ace draws the defenders’ attention while his crew searches for hostages. Good confronts him, falsely claims to be Kaido, and leads him to the Back Mountain for a duel 50.
Good overpowers Ace physically and withstands his fire attacks. Unknown to Ace, his flames supply Nature Power to the Groudon sharing Good’s body, making Good stronger as the battle continues. Meanwhile, Yamato captures the Spade Pirates 50 51.
When Good demands that he submit or die, Ace refuses and unleashes Flame Emperor. The attack shakes Onigashima, shatters rocky mountains, and damages Skull Castle, but Good survives and undergoes a temporary evolution. Ace is left unconscious 51 52.
Ace awakens in Seastone shackles and initially still believes Kaido defeated him. Good reveals his identity and uses the captured crew to force a release agreement 53 54.
| Condition | Terms |
|---|---|
| Ransom debt | One billion Beli for Ace and his crew, despite their combined bounties totaling only a little over 400 million 53. |
| Annual interest | Thirty percent, equivalent to 300 million Beli per year on the principal 53. |
| Evidence | A signed, thumbprinted contract and photographs of Ace holding the IOU; Good also coerces him into undressing for further photographs 54. |
| Additional task | Kill Shogun Kurozumi Orochi 54. |
Ace accepts the debt because he values his crewmates’ lives above money. The photographs become a further source of humiliation: he fears their publication would disgrace him, especially before his family in Foosha Village 53 54.
Assassination of Orochi
Ace accepts the assassination without a moral objection, having learned about Orochi’s atrocities from Amigasa’s villagers. During the attack on the shogun’s castle, his crew holds off the samurai while he pursues Orochi 56.
Fukurokuju attempts to stop him, but shuriken and Earlobe Jutsu fail against his Logia body. Ace burns through the restraint and defeats him with Fire Daruma, recovering some of the confidence shaken by his loss to Good 56.
After killing Orochi, Ace displays his severed head and declares his ambition to become the World’s Strongest Man. Yamato then intervenes according to Good’s plan. Ignoring his crew’s warnings, Ace challenges her and is launched into the distance by Frosty Heavenly Thunder Bagua before completing his attack 57 58.
Joining the Whitebeard Pirates
After leaving Wano, Ace enters Whitebeard’s territory. He initially hopes that defeating Whitebeard might earn enough money to repay his billion-Beli debt. Over nearly three months, he challenges Whitebeard one hundred times through direct attacks, night raids, and assassination attempts, losing every encounter before finally accepting him as “Pops” 74 82.
Ace subsequently defeats Doma’s crew and brings them into Whitebeard’s ranks. Whitebeard appoints him Second Division Commander, filling the position left vacant since Oden’s departure twenty-one years earlier. Ace embraces a revised goal: make Whitebeard Pirate King before continuing his own pursuit of becoming the strongest 82.
Kaido sends Good to capture Ace alive for recruitment. At Hachinosu, however, Good presents himself as Ace’s beloved older brother rather than an enemy. Ace reluctantly supports the story under pressure from his creditor, while the Whitebeard commanders accept Good’s claim that the two became sworn brothers after fighting in Wano 81 84 85.
Ace challenges Good again the following morning, hoping his improved Haki will overcome the opponent he regards as a nightmare. Good immediately defeats him in front of the other commanders 86 87.
Hunt for Blackbeard
After Teach murders Thatch and obtains the Dark-Dark Fruit, Ace hunts him alone despite Whitebeard’s objections. Shanks fears that Blackbeard will defeat Ace and use him to destroy the Whitebeard Pirates 222 225.
Good likewise warns Whitebeard that Ace will not abandon the pursuit and that Blackbeard could hand him over to the Navy to provoke a war. Newspapers later announce Ace’s imprisonment alongside Blackbeard’s appointment as a Shichibukai 225 227.
Marineford and Death
The Marines schedule Ace’s public execution and summon one hundred thousand elite officers in preparation for Whitebeard’s rescue attempt. On the execution platform, Sengoku publicly reveals that Ace is Gol D. Roger’s biological son 228 237.
Luffy learns of the execution while stranded in Kamabakka Kingdom, but cannot reach Marineford in time. The residents knock him unconscious to stop his desperate attempts to leave 238.
Mr. 3 infiltrates the execution platform disguised as an executioner and unlocks Ace’s Seastone handcuffs. Ace survives Sengoku’s punch, escapes the platform with Mr. 3, and clears space with Flame Pillar as Whitebeard orders his forces to retreat 239.
During the withdrawal, Ace turns back because he cannot endure Akainu insulting Whitebeard. Akainu defeats him in a direct clash, engulfing much of one side of his body in magma and inflicting fatal injuries 239.
Ace survives for several days under treatment, but ultimately dies smiling, surrounded by the division commanders. He is buried beside Whitebeard on Sphinx Island, where Good places flowers at both graves 243.
Posthumous Influence
Ace’s Flame-Flame Fruit later reappears and is acquired by Doflamingo. Good obtains it and feeds it to Groudon, using its Nature Power to achieve Primal Reversion, though the transformation remains limited by stamina 311 312 318.
Personality
Ace is compassionate toward vulnerable people. He willingly lets Amigasa’s starving villagers take his crew’s food, refuses to punish them, and promises Tama that he will recover the abducted adults. His concern for his crew also overrides his pride when he accepts Good’s crushing ransom terms 48 49 53.
His ambition is closely tied to proving that his existence has value. He seeks powerful opponents, dreams of becoming the World’s Strongest Man, and refuses to submit merely because an enemy is stronger. Defeat can shake him deeply, but an easier victory quickly restores his confidence 49 51 56 58.
That resolve also makes him reckless. He invades Onigashima without knowing what Kaido looks like, disregards his crew’s warnings about Yamato, and pursues Blackbeard against Whitebeard’s advice. His refusal to ignore insults against Whitebeard ultimately costs him his chance to escape Marineford 50 57 225 239.
Abilities & Skills
Flame-Flame Fruit
Ace’s Logia fruit allows him to generate, control, and transform into fire 50 56.
- Elemental body: Shuriken pass through his chest, with the openings closing in flames 56.
- Escape and restraint-breaking: He burns through ordinary ropes and defeats Fukurokuju’s Earlobe Jutsu with Flame Pillar 48 56.
- Seastone restriction: Seastone shackles prevent him from using his powers 54.
- Poor matchup against Groudon: His flames nourish Good’s Groudon rather than inflicting meaningful damage, strengthening his opponent throughout their duel 50 51.
| Technique | Application |
|---|---|
| Fire Fist | A massive flame attack released from his fist; used against Good, Orochi, and the shogun’s defenders 50 56. |
| Fire Pistol | Rapid fire bullets shot from his fingertips while holding his hands like pistols 56. |
| Firefly: Fire Daruma | Firefly-like lights surround a target and detonate. Their concentrated heat can melt steel, although the individual explosions are not especially powerful 51. |

| Flame Pillar | An eruption of fire around Ace, used to break restraints and clear nearby enemies 56 239. |
| Great Flame Commandment: Flame Emperor | His strongest attack: a gigantic fireball resembling a miniature sun. Its detonation shakes Onigashima and damages Skull Castle 51 52. |
Haki and Close Combat
Ace combines physical attacks with his fire powers and later demonstrates black Haki coating on his fists 50 86.
- His Haki improves considerably during his time with the Whitebeard Pirates 86.
- He deliberately avoids relying on his fruit during his second duel with Good, but remains decisively outmatched 86 87.
