Background / History

Oden’s Death and Imprisonment

At eight years old, Yamato witnessed Kozuki Oden’s execution by boiling. His hour-long ordeal inspired her admiration, which deepened after she learned about his deeds and obtained his journal, including accounts of his voyages. She wanted to become like Oden, live freely, defeat Kaido, and liberate Wano 10.

Kaido responded to her defiance with beatings and imprisonment on Onigashima. She wore Seastone Handcuffs for fifteen years, and Kaido killed people who befriended her, eventually leaving others afraid to approach her. By Sea Circle Calendar year 1517, her repeated defeats had become familiar incidents to the island’s pirates 1 3 13.

Capture and Good’s Instruction

After another defeat by Kaido, an injured and hungry Yamato fought through the pirates sent to capture her. She incapacitated Page One with Thunder Bagua, then battled Ulti. Seeing Ulti’s supporters made her dwell on her own isolation, creating an opening for Ulti’s repeated headbutts. Good intervened after both women were exhausted and subdued Yamato with earth attacks and wrestling techniques 2 3 4 5.

In the dungeon, Good fed her rice and listened to her talk about Oden. Despite remaining frightened of the man who had captured her, she came to regard him as her only friend. Good used her admiration for Oden to argue that endurance and outward obedience would accomplish more than repeatedly challenging an unbeatable father 9 10 11.

After fifteen days of instruction, Yamato agreed to stop calling herself Oden publicly, apologize to Kaido, and accept his orders without argument. Her aim remained freedom and Wano’s salvation; submission was a strategy rather than an abandonment of those goals 11.

Apparent Reconciliation and Return to Wano

Yamato interrupted Kaido’s meeting with the All-Stars, knelt before him, and declared herself his obedient daughter. Kaido was delighted and ordered King to remove her handcuffs. King remained suspicious and proposed assigning her to crush the Kozuki Remnants as a test of loyalty 12 13.

Yamato accepted the assignment publicly but privately told Good she would rather die than kill Oden’s followers. Good offered to kill them himself. Their mission allowed her to return to Wano’s mainland and move about freely for the first time in fifteen years 13 14.

Good took her through a casino and the Flower Capital’s Pleasure District to broaden her understanding of Wano. He then made her the owner of the Heavenly Residence Hot Spring Spa Club. Her identity attracted wealthy guests and lavish gifts, but also served as bait for Kozuki Samurai seeking revenge on Kaido. Good slaughtered the attacking samurai, leaving Yamato distressed by the cost of their strategy 15 17 18 19 21.

Hakumai Reconstruction and the Shogun Proposal

At God of Wealth Town, Yamato confronted the poverty caused by Wano’s rulers and eagerly supported Good’s proposal to rebuild the settlement. He also suggested killing Orochi and making her shogun. She was shocked and initially objected that Kaido would never permit it 21 22.

When Good later threatened to destroy the town unless its residents signed his contract, Yamato challenged his cruelty. His explanation that the villagers hated and distrusted the Beasts Pirates forced her to reconsider her expectations. She resolved to help them even without their affection or gratitude 29.

During Kaido’s expedition, Yamato’s authority supported the Hakumai construction project and the diversion of surplus farm supplies to its workers. At Orochi’s banquet, Good presented the project as proof that Kaido’s only child could eventually lead the Beasts Pirates. He also claimed to be her fiancé, using their closeness to deter Orochi from killing him 35 37 38.

Bandit Campaign and Return to Onigashima

During the campaign against Shutenmaru, Yamato checked Good’s intelligence with Shimotsuki Yasuie and Hyogoro. Confirming that an Oden retainer had committed serious crimes challenged her idealized view of Oden and his followers. Good urged her to distinguish her own aspirations from imitation of a person she knew chiefly through an execution, a journal, and stories 42.

She tended wounded people during the campaign, protected Good from Ushimitsu Kozō’s flying slash, and later used Thunder Bagua to knock away the thief’s headscarf, exposing his blue hair. She stopped the samurai from pursuing him 43 45 47.

Yamato subsequently returned to Onigashima with Good to prepare for Ace’s arrival. Although she hated returning to her former prison, she acknowledged that patience had already won her freedom of movement within Wano. Good estimated that true independence would require at least another five years and ordered her not to attack Ace without permission 49.

Appearance

Yamato is white-haired and is described as having an attractive face and figure. Her usual presentation is boyish, and she initially shows little interest in dressing up 2 16.

  • Spa-opening attire: Light makeup, a cheongsam, and twin buns, chosen to give the establishment a distinctive style 18.
  • Former restraints: Seastone Handcuffs worn from age eight until King removes them 10 13.
  • Weapon: Frequently carries a spiked kanabo over her shoulder 12 47.

Personality

Yamato is fiercely defiant and devoted to freedom. Years of near-fatal beatings fail to make her genuinely submit to Kaido. Her admiration for Oden initially shapes both her identity and her belief that defeating her father is the way to save Wano 10 12 22.

Her long isolation leaves her eager for friendship and inexperienced with the wider world. She envies Ulti’s cheering supporters, enthusiastically shares Oden’s history once Good listens to her, and explores the mainland with interest in nearly everything she sees. Good repeatedly exploits her trust and devotion to Oden to influence her decisions 3 10 11 15.

Her compassion does not disappear under that influence. She refuses to personally kill the Kozuki Samurai, objects to Good’s coercion of impoverished villagers, and ultimately chooses to help people even if they hate her. Her understanding of heroism becomes less dependent on being accepted as Oden 13 29.

Abilities & Skills

Kanabo Combat and Thunder Bagua

Yamato fights with a spiked club and uses Thunder Bagua, a technique copied from Kaido 2.

  • Haki-coated strikes: Wraps her remaining Haki around the kanabo, producing black lightning 2.
  • Speed and force: Strikes Page One before he can evade, shattering his Spinosaurus form’s jaw and fangs 2.
  • Defensive use: Blocks Ulti’s headbutt and Ushimitsu Kozō’s powerful flying slash 3 45.
  • Limit: Injuries, hunger, and exhausted stamina leave her unable to withstand Good’s sustained attacks 4.

Haki

Yamato demonstrates Armament, Observation, and Conqueror’s Haki 3 4 23.

  • Armament Haki: Hardens her forehead against Ulti’s headbutts 3.
  • Observation Haki: Senses Good’s presence after an explosion and concludes that he is not seriously hurt 47.
  • Conqueror’s Haki: Clashes with Doflamingo at Mogura Port, generating a harbor-wide shock wave and rendering nearby pirates unconscious 23.
  • Limit: Cannot maintain Observation Haki while severely depleted during her capture 4.

Strength and Durability

Her constitution allows her to keep fighting after punishment that would incapacitate ordinary pirates 2 3.

  • Sends a dozen pirates flying with broad kanabo swings despite injuries 2.
  • Continues fighting through repeated Haki-coated headbutts and a skull fracture 3.
  • Remains far below Kaido’s strength despite becoming vastly stronger than she was as a child 11.

  • Groudon Good — Captor, teacher, business partner, and the person she considers her only trusted friend. Their closeness develops romantic ambiguity: she becomes flustered by his interest, while he publicly claims they are engaged; her agreement to an engagement is not shown 10 11 21 29 30 38.
  • Kozuki Oden — Idol whose death, deeds, and journal inspire her desire for freedom. Her understanding of him is later challenged by accounts of his faults and his retainers’ crimes 10 42.
