Background / History

Kaido originated in the Vodka Kingdom, where he was conscripted as a soldier while very young. By the age of ten, he was the kingdom's strongest warrior. He spent nearly ten years defeating its enemies and protecting its people, but its rulers ultimately sold him to the World Government as a political tool. He escaped from a warship and became a pirate. He identifies this betrayal as the origin of his dream of forcing privileged rulers onto the battlefield 360.

Forty years before his later meeting with Shiki, Kaido was an apprentice in the Rocks Pirates, looking up to the powerful veterans aboard the ship. By their reunion, their positions had reversed: Kaido overpowered Shiki in their opening clash, and Shiki acknowledged that the former apprentice had become the World's Strongest 278.

During the battle at God Valley, Big Mom gave him the Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon. She regarded him as a younger brother and wanted them to rule the seas together, but he left without her. They subsequently went more than thirty years without contact, leaving her resentful of both his departure and his failure to acknowledge the debt 190 200.

Kaido initially controls Wano Country through the Beasts Pirates’ alliance with Shogun Orochi. Although Orochi holds the shogun’s title, Wano’s influential residents recognize Kaido as the country’s true master. The two have an agreement not to interfere in each other’s territories 15 35.

Kozuki Oden failed to defeat Kaido, and Yamato’s admiration for Oden became the basis of her rebellion against her father. Kaido confined her to Onigashima and had her placed in Seastone Handcuffs at the age of eight. Over the following fifteen years, he repeatedly beat her—sometimes nearly to death—without extinguishing her defiance 10 12 13 49.

The Beasts Pirates sold their manufactured weapons through Hanafuda, the “Lizard King,” who served as their front man for more than a decade. His death threatened their economic lifeline just as the Four Emperors’ struggle over the New World intensified and Kaido prepared the largest expedition in the crew’s history 12.

Kaido had long intended to replace Orochi with Yamato shortly before his final war, when ordinary governance would cease to be his priority. Good and Yamato brought about the transition much earlier, during his six-month expedition. After returning, he accepted assurances that Good would assist Yamato and keep weapons production and trade functioning 64 65.

Appearance

  • Azure Dragon form: An enormous dragon that emerges from rolling thunderclouds and circles above Onigashima 1.
  • Clothing: Wears a cloak beneath which he keeps his spiked club 12.
  • Weapon: Carries an enormous spiked club, which becomes wreathed in black lightning during Thunder Bagua 25.
  • Hybrid dragon form: Combines his humanoid build with dragon features, including a tail and claws. He uses Flame Clouds to support himself in the air while in this form 197 281.

Personality

Kaido values strength, potential, and useful service more than a subordinate’s past hostility. He welcomes former enemies who submit to him and considers Yamato’s apparent obedience sufficient to put her strength to work. He is unconcerned by the possibility of betrayal because he believes his presence alone prevents anyone from acting against him 13.

His treatment of capable subordinates can be informal and generous. Good regards him as a boss who rewards merit, provides room for advancement, and behaves more like an older brother than a distant ruler. That generosity remains tied to strength and results, rather than kindness toward everyone under his authority 20 28.

Alcohol accompanies both his celebrations and his emotional outbursts. While drinking, he shifts from weeping over Hanafuda’s death to raging at those responsible. His overriding ambition is to assemble the world’s strongest army and wage an unprecedented war 23 24.

His desire to recruit powerful fighters can outweigh personal grievances. He mourns Shutenmaru and Kyoshiro chiefly because their deaths deprived him of potential subordinates, while his anger over Orochi's death centers on the disruption of the weapons trade. He initially orders Ace hunted down in fury, but later wants him captured alive for recruitment 65 81.

Kaido regards violence, weapons, and money as the foundations of survival. Before seeing the results of Good's businesses, he dismisses Yamato's efforts to govern Wano and care for its people as childish, believing plunder more profitable than peaceful administration. He likewise calls Roger, Whitebeard, and Red Hair naive for failing to embrace the strong ruling the weak 68 132.

Despite his confidence, he can acknowledge the accomplishments of others. Good's growing military, economic, and organizational achievements lead him to recognize that Good offers a more credible path to changing the world than his own plans. Later, Good and Yamato's performance against him leaves him proud but melancholy about aging and becoming a remnant of an earlier era 179 282.

His hatred of hereditary privilege underlies his final-war ambitions. After becoming Pirate King, he declares that the ancient history revealed at Laugh Tale matters less to him than overthrowing the Celestial Dragons. In his view, forcing rulers into a war where strength determines worth represents true equality and freedom 360.

Abilities & Skills

Dragon Transformation

  • Transforms into a huge Azure Dragon and moves through the sky above Onigashima 1.
  • Uses this form to leave Onigashima after the confrontation with Doflamingo 25.
  • The transformation is provided by the Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon, a Mythical Zoan. Big Mom gave him the fruit during the battle at God Valley 144 190 200.
  • Can enter a hybrid dragon form for close combat, using his tail to block Good's greatsword and his claws to seize both Good's and Yamato's weapons 281 282.
  • Creates clouds, including Flame Clouds used to support flight. Good's full Groudon transformation disperses his clouds, including the Flame Clouds, a phenomenon Kaido notices after Good defeats Jack 80 197.

Thunder Bagua

  • A devastating spiked-club attack that sends Yamato flying toward Onigashima’s rear mountain, with an impact that shakes the island 1.
  • Strikes Doflamingo with a black-lightning-wreathed club, blasting him out of the banquet hall despite his attempt to fight with all his Haki and string abilities 25.
  • Uses the technique while instructing Good; Good later recalls its penetrating, tearing impact while developing his own Haki against Garp 208.
  • Great Vajra: Thunder Bagua: Shatters Kid's electromagnetic cannon and gravely wounds both Kid and Killer with one black-lightning-wreathed strike 344.

Haki

  • Releases pressure powerful enough to split walls, crumble furniture, and make the banquet hall tremble as he approaches Doflamingo 25.
  • Recognizes Yamato by her presence, dismissing the possibility that her unexpected apology comes from an appearance-copying impostor 12.
  • Conqueror's Haki: Sweeps the banquet hall with an overwhelming burst of Haki when delighted by Good's five-billion-Beli golden dragon 70.
  • Observation Haki: Foresees the outcome of Good's final attack against Jack and therefore does not intervene 80.
  • His clashes with Big Mom and Shiki split the sky 197 278.
  • Serves as a benchmark for exceptionally powerful Haki: during Good's battle with Imu, Good judges her Conqueror's Haki to surpass even Kaido's 302.

Physical Strength

  • Repeatedly overpowers Yamato; she openly admits that she cannot defeat him despite becoming vastly stronger since childhood 11.
  • Strikes his own forehead with his club to check whether he is drunk, drawing blood without interrupting the meeting 12.
  • Can withstand laser attacks with his body, placing him alongside Big Mom among the exceptionally durable pirates recalled by Kizaru 95.
  • Knocks Shiki backward over a dozen meters in a weapon clash without moving from his own position 278.
  • Survives Good and Yamato's combined Hakai despite severe bleeding and extensive injuries, remaining conscious and able to end the spar and drink afterward 282.
  • Endures Kid's awakened electromagnetic cannon, which blasts him through Skull Castle. He emerges with a charred chest and blood at his mouth, remarks that the wound will leave a scar, and immediately defeats Kid and Killer 343 344.

Dragon Attacks

  • Bolo Breath: A destructive breath attack used against the Red Hair Pirates' ship near Lodestar Island. Good's Solar Beam is earlier compared to it in destructive power 79 352.
  • Twister: Spins his Azure Dragon body at high speed to generate fierce winds, disrupting Good and Yamato's coordinated close-range assault and sweeping Yamato into the air 282.
  • Demolition Gust: Releases numerous enormous slashing waves from his mouth, each capable of cutting through a mountaintop 363.
  • Flame Dragon Torch: Envelops himself in a searing magma-like layer and expands to more than a hundred times his previous size. He deploys it against Shamrock's Divine Judgment while the latter's Cerberus is biting into his dragon body 363.

Drunken Dragon Bagua

Drunken Dragon Bagua is a combat state in which Kaido's drunkenness and extreme emotional changes accompany an increase in fighting performance. In his final duel with Shanks, his speed and strength rise after he drinks an entire barrel of liquor 358.

  • Drunken Thunder Swing: Ragnaraku: A two-handed overhead club strike that forces Shanks down into the ground despite his sword block. Kaido follows it with a kick that sends Shanks through several rocky mountains 358.
  • Crying Drunk: Shifts from laughter into sobbing over the prospect of losing another opponent capable of meeting him head-on 358.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Spiked club — His principal demonstrated weapon, used for Thunder Bagua 1 25.
  • Liquor bowls, jugs, and flasks — Regularly drinks during meetings and banquets; shares liquor with Yamato and Good when accepting or praising them 11 13 24 28.
  • Golden divine dragon — A statue modeled on his Azure Dragon form, made from gold worth five billion Beli and presented by Good in Yamato's name. Kaido places it beside his bed and admires it before sleeping 70 198.
  • Road Poneglyph rubbings — By the approach to Lodestar Island, possesses three rubbings obtained from Wano, Zou, and Katakuri, leaving one final Road Poneglyph to find 352.

Relationships

  • Yamato — His only child and a persistent rebel who wants to defeat him and liberate Wano. Her eventual apology is a strategy taught by Good, not a genuine abandonment of her goals 10 11 13. He later accepts her accession as shogun after Good guarantees stable administration and weapons trade, and arranges her marriage to Good without her consent 65 81. During their later spar, he recognizes her increased strength and acknowledges her and Good's combined ability after taking their Hakai 281 282.
  • King — His most trusted lieutenant. King manages Yamato’s handcuff keys and remains vigilant about threats Kaido is confident enough to disregard 12 13. Kaido privately confides in him that he believes Good is Joy Boy 179.
  • Queen and Jack — Senior officers among the Three Calamities, summoned for discussions about Hanafuda’s death and present during Doflamingo’s reception 12 23. Kaido witnesses Good's defeat of Jack and accepts Good's proposal concerning him, despite his usual view that defeat is a serious failing 79 80.
  • Groudon Good — A subordinate whose apparent loyalty and growing power earn Kaido’s favor. Kaido decides to prioritize his development and later considers him a future Flying Six member 20 24 28. He subsequently promotes him to the Flying Six, welcomes his rise to All-Star, and recognizes him as his son-in-law 65 80 81 167. Kaido protects him against rival Emperors, backs his territorial and commercial expansion, and eventually concludes that Good is Joy Boy 98 132 141 167 179. By their later reunion, Good's standing rivals Kaido's and his popularity among ordinary crew members is even greater; Kaido nevertheless remains captain 281 282.
  • Kurozumi Orochi — Wano’s former shogun and Kaido’s ally. They shared drinking sessions and maintained separate territorial interests 25 35. Kaido is shocked and angered by his death during the expedition, but accepts Yamato's replacement government once assured that business remains stable 64 65.
  • Hanafuda — His longtime weapons-trade intermediary, who also promised to collect Zoan Devil Fruits for him 12 23.
  • Doflamingo / Joker — Hanafuda’s killer and would-be replacement. Kaido’s willingness to deal with him depends on whether his artificial Devil Fruits can deliver sufficient value 23 24 25 28.
  • Portgas D. Ace — Defeats Hanafuda before Doflamingo finishes him off. Ace later enters Wano intending to kill Kaido and rescue villagers sent to him by Orochi 12 49. Good initially impersonates Kaido when fighting Ace, then reveals the deception after capturing him 50 53. After learning that Ace killed Orochi, Kaido orders him hunted down; he later instructs Good to capture him alive for recruitment at Hachinosu 65 81.
  • Big Mom / Charlotte Linlin — A former crewmate who regarded him as a younger brother and gave him his Devil Fruit at God Valley. Their reunion after decades begins with a sky-splitting fight, but Good draws them into negotiations and gives her a Road Poneglyph rubbing to encourage cooperation 190 197 198 200. Later, Good interprets Kaido's coy interest in sending her regards as romantic interest 343.
  • Whitebeard — A rival Emperor whom Kaido warns not to bully Good when he arrives at Hachinosu. Kaido leaves after their confrontation rather than beginning a prolonged battle 98.
  • Shiki / Golden Lion — A senior figure from his days as a Rocks apprentice. Kaido overpowers him during their reunion before hearing his proposal concerning Hachinosu 278.
  • Red-Haired Shanks — A rival Emperor and recurring enemy. Kaido pursues him after he wounds Good, later fights him at Gottel, and finally defeats and kills him at Lodestar Island 141 176 358.
  • Eustass Kid and Killer — Newcomers brought into the Beasts Pirates' orbit at Kaido's request. After Kid challenges him directly, Kaido survives his awakened cannon and gravely wounds both men with Great Vajra: Thunder Bagua 333 343 344.
  • Figarland Shamrock — Shanks's brother and an opponent in the Holy Land. Kaido recognizes the resemblance, judges Shamrock's Haki slightly inferior to Shanks's, and fights his sword techniques and Cerberus ability 363.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Yamato’s Punishment and Apparent Submission

  • In Sea Circle Calendar year 1517, Kaido defeats Yamato again and orders his pirates to imprison her without food for half a month. The opportunity for a reward prompts Good to pursue and capture her 1 5.
  • Yamato’s sudden kneeling apology astonishes Kaido and the Three Calamities. After checking that he is not drunk, he celebrates what he believes is her submission 12.
  • He accepts her apology, orders King to remove her handcuffs, and agrees to send her against the Kozuki Remnants. He understands that King’s proposed assignment is a test of whether she has truly abandoned her allegiance to Oden 13.

Rewarding Good

  • Kaido and his senior officers watch the Heavenly Residence’s opening remotely through a Visual Den Den Mushi 18.
  • Good’s life-risking battle against the Kozuki Remnants convinces Kaido of his potential and loyalty. Kaido promotes him to Shinuchi, sends 10,000 gold for Yamato’s shop, and assigns him to receive Joker 20.

The SMILE Negotiations

  • Doflamingo offers ten SMILE artificial Devil Fruits as compensation and a means of creating Kaido’s desired army of beast-powered fighters 23.
  • Kaido permits Good to test the fruits despite initially worrying that an artificial fruit could waste his potential. Good’s willingness to eat another fruit at the apparent risk of death further strengthens Kaido’s favorable assessment of him 24.
  • Good secretly feeds the fruits to Groudon, leaving the officers to believe that the batch is ineffective. Kaido attacks Doflamingo and gives his family half a month to deliver genuine artificial Devil Fruits 24 25 26.
  • A later delivery produces a successful user in Holdem, restoring Kaido’s enthusiasm for SMILE 28.

Expedition and Delegated Authority

  • At the final pre-expedition banquet, Kaido seats Good immediately below the Three Calamities. After Good defeats Holdem, Kaido welcomes the additional strength without demanding an explanation of his transformation 28.
  • Good persuades him that Onigashima needs protection against opportunistic attackers, particularly Ace. Kaido entrusts the island to Good and departs with a fleet carrying 10,000 troops 28.
  • During his absence, the remaining Beasts Pirates must obey Yamato. Good uses this authority to develop Hakumai and presents the project to Orochi as a future gift for Kaido 35 38.
  • Daikoku suspects that Kaido secretly intends to replace Orochi with Yamato. This is Daikoku’s interpretation of Good’s maneuvering, not a confirmed order from Kaido 44.
  • The six-month expedition occupies thirty-seven islands and destroys eleven countries, expanding the crew's sphere of influence dozens of times over. It also exposes the weakness of its middle- and upper-ranking fighters relative to other Emperor crews, strengthening Kaido's desire to develop the Flying Six 64.

Return to Wano and the Fire Festival

  • Returning through Hakumai, Kaido notices the extraordinary sight of ordinary residents welcoming his pirates and the extensive rice fields approaching harvest 63.
  • At the victory banquet, Good reports the deaths of Shutenmaru, Kyoshiro, and Orochi. Kaido alternates between anger and drunken grief, regretting the loss of powerful potential recruits and his weapons-trade partner 64 65.
  • Good reports that Yamato has become shogun and that he is assisting her as Hakumai's daimyo and the shogun's aide. With weapons production and trade continuing smoothly, Kaido promotes him to the Flying Six 65.
  • Kaido permits challenges to the Flying Six during the Fire Festival and grants the six officers a single challenger slot against the All-Stars 65.
  • He initially plans to teach Yamato that peaceful governance cannot replace the profits of violence. Good overturns his expectations by presenting a golden dragon worth five billion Beli, followed by an expedition reward of one billion Beli distributed over the pirates 68 70 71.
  • After observing Good defeat Jack, Kaido accepts Good's proposal regarding Jack and presents his promised reward: an arranged marriage to Yamato. Yamato later protests that her father never sought her consent 79 80 81.
  • Kaido orders Good to capture Ace alive at Hachinosu, find new Flying Six candidates, and visit Stussy in the Pleasure District 81.

Backing Good's Expansion

  • Kaido appears above Hachinosu after Good's battle with Kizaru. His presence terrifies the local pirates, and he warns Whitebeard not to bully Good before departing 97 98.
  • At a later welcome banquet, he hears Good's argument that the rising generation and Toki's prophecy point toward an approaching struggle for the Pirate King's throne. He agrees to support the Groudon Real Estate Company's expansion across the New World and assigns Good to suppress labor uprisings and obtain workers 131 132.
  • After Shanks wounds Good, Kaido arrives and asks which way the Red Hair Pirates sailed, furious that a rival has seriously injured one of his people 141.
  • At the following Fire Festival, he celebrates Good's recruitment of Hajrudin and the New Giant Warrior Pirates. Good's account of breaking Aokiji's leg and sleeping through a Buster Call shocks him enough that he strikes his own head with his club to verify that he is awake 167.
  • Kaido endorses preparations for all-out war against the Red Hair Pirates. He also proposes holding Good and Yamato's wedding during the festival, claiming that he wants grandchildren 167 168.

Gottel and Hoenn Fortress

  • At Gottel, Kaido duels Shanks while the Beasts Pirates defeat the Red Hair Pirates. Kizaru, Mihawk, and Boa Hancock intervene before the defeated crew can be annihilated. Recognizing the additional losses a battle with the Marines would cause, Kaido accepts Good's recommendation to withdraw with their victory secured 176.
  • After seeing the future Good's plans could create, Kaido privately tells King that Good is Joy Boy. He admits to himself that fighting is the only field in which he still clearly surpasses Good 179.
  • When Big Mom arrives for Good's gathering, Kaido sets out to meet her. Their reunion becomes a sky-splitting fight that moves to an uninhabited island 197.
  • The promise of another surprise from Good distracts him sufficiently for Big Mom to punch him in the face. He ends the fight to visit Hoenn Fortress, then boasts of the immense structure as his own achievement 198.
  • In the fortress's underground chamber, Good reveals a Road Poneglyph. After stopping Kaido and Big Mom from fighting over it, he gives Big Mom a rubbing to facilitate cooperation 200.

War with the Marines and Good's Rise

  • During Good's battle at Marine Headquarters, Kaido captures the G-1 Branch and Red Port, then advances toward the Holy Land. This threat helps force Sengoku to end the war rather than continue attempting to capture Good 242.
  • News of Kuzan becoming Hoenn's Fleet Admiral and former Whitebeard commanders joining the Groudon Company leaves Kaido and King struggling to make sense of Good's latest expansion 255.
  • Shiki visits Onigashima to negotiate over Hachinosu. Kaido establishes his superiority in their opening clash before considering the proposal 278.

Spar with Good and Yamato

  • During Good's return banquet, Kaido challenges him to a serious spar. Good brings Yamato, and Kaido invites both to attack together atop Skull Castle 281.
  • Yamato meets his Thunder Bagua head-on, while Good's attacks force him into hybrid form. Their seamless coordination repeatedly defeats his attempts to defend against both at once 281 282.
  • Kaido transforms into his full Azure Dragon form and uses Twister to break up their close-range assault. Good and Yamato answer with Hakai, badly injuring him 282.
  • When the pair prepare another Hakai, Kaido calls a halt and acknowledges their strength. Good and Yamato feign exhaustion to preserve his standing, leaving the watching pirates to celebrate the contest as an evenly matched display 282.
  • Kaido privately concludes that defeating Good alone would now require risking his life. Proud but unsettled by their growth, he drinks with the crew and then flies away to clear his head 282.

Return of the Kozuki Heir and Kid's Challenge

  • Good captures Kid, Killer, and other pirates after explaining that Kaido wants to see them. He later returns to Wano with these prisoners and Kozuki Momonosuke 333 336.
  • Kaido welcomes Good enthusiastically but coldly dismisses Momonosuke as the same coward he remembers, unworthy of being Oden's son 337.
  • After defeating Ulti and Page One under the contest rules, Kid challenges Kaido directly. Kaido accepts and deliberately takes on Kid's awakened Zap Cannon 343.
  • An additional shot knocks away his club and drives him through Skull Castle. Kaido returns with an injured, charred chest, then shatters the cannon and gravely wounds Kid and Killer with Great Vajra: Thunder Bagua 343 344.
  • Kaido leaves without granting the Kid Pirates' request for mercy. Good takes over the aftermath while the Beasts Pirates celebrate their captain's overwhelming strength 344.

Lodestar Island and the Pirate King's Throne

  • Possessing three Road Poneglyph rubbings, Kaido becomes convinced that Good's prediction of an approaching Pirate King is coming true. He eagerly seeks battle as the great pirate forces converge on Lodestar Island 352.
  • He attacks the Red Hair Pirates' approaching ship with Bolo Breath, beginning another battle between the rival crews 352.
  • Deep within the island, Kaido and Shanks share liquor before their final round. Both are heavily injured and exhausted, but Kaido's Drunken Dragon Bagua increases his speed and strength. After three more hours, Shanks dies and the surviving Red Hair Pirates flee 358.
  • Kaido initially objects to sharing access to Laugh Tale with other pirates. Good persuades him that such generosity is the conduct of a true king, then lets him take the leading position before nearly one hundred thousand pirates 359.
  • Kaido commands the New World Pirate Grand Fleet to set sail for the One Piece. After leading the pirates to Laugh Tale and sharing both the treasure's revelations and the secrets of the Void Century, he is unanimously recognized as the new Pirate King 359 360.

Final War

  • Upon becoming Pirate King, Kaido recounts his betrayal by the Vodka Kingdom's rulers and declares his real goal: to attack the Holy Land and slaughter the Celestial Dragons. He dismisses the ancient conflict between the World Government and the Nika Kingdom as less important to him than this personal ambition 360.
  • At the Holy Land, he fights Figarland Shamrock, recognizing his resemblance to Shanks and comparing their Haki. He uses Demolition Gust against Divine Judgment, then activates Flame Dragon Torch after Shamrock's Cerberus bites into his body 363.
  • Kaido is present when Good addresses the assembled powerful figures as they acknowledge Good's position as King of the World 364.
