Background / History

Oden’s Death and Imprisonment

At eight years old, Yamato witnessed Kozuki Oden’s execution by boiling. His hour-long ordeal inspired her admiration, which deepened after she learned about his deeds and obtained his journal, including accounts of his voyages. She wanted to become like Oden, live freely, defeat Kaido, and liberate Wano 10.

Kaido responded to her defiance with beatings and imprisonment on Onigashima. She wore Seastone Handcuffs for fifteen years, and Kaido killed people who befriended her, eventually leaving others afraid to approach her. By Sea Circle Calendar year 1517, her repeated defeats had become familiar incidents to the island’s pirates 1 3 13.

Capture and Good’s Instruction

After another defeat by Kaido, an injured and hungry Yamato fought through the pirates sent to capture her. She incapacitated Page One with Thunder Bagua, then battled Ulti. Seeing Ulti’s supporters made her dwell on her own isolation, creating an opening for Ulti’s repeated headbutts. Good intervened after both women were exhausted and subdued Yamato with earth attacks and wrestling techniques 2 3 4 5.

In the dungeon, Good fed her rice and listened to her talk about Oden. Despite remaining frightened of the man who had captured her, she came to regard him as her only friend. Good used her admiration for Oden to argue that endurance and outward obedience would accomplish more than repeatedly challenging an unbeatable father 9 10 11.

After fifteen days of instruction, Yamato agreed to stop calling herself Oden publicly, apologize to Kaido, and accept his orders without argument. Her aim remained freedom and Wano’s salvation; submission was a strategy rather than an abandonment of those goals 11.

Apparent Reconciliation and Return to Wano

Yamato interrupted Kaido’s meeting with the All-Stars, knelt before him, and declared herself his obedient daughter. Kaido was delighted and ordered King to remove her handcuffs. King remained suspicious and proposed assigning her to crush the Kozuki Remnants as a test of loyalty 12 13.

Yamato accepted the assignment publicly but privately told Good she would rather die than kill Oden’s followers. Good offered to kill them himself. Their mission allowed her to return to Wano’s mainland and move about freely for the first time in fifteen years 13 14.

Good took her through a casino and the Flower Capital’s Pleasure District to broaden her understanding of Wano. He then made her the owner of the Heavenly Residence Hot Spring Spa Club. Her identity attracted wealthy guests and lavish gifts, but also served as bait for Kozuki Samurai seeking revenge on Kaido. Good slaughtered the attacking samurai, leaving Yamato distressed by the cost of their strategy 15 17 18 19 21.

Hakumai Reconstruction and the Shogun Proposal

At God of Wealth Town, Yamato confronted the poverty caused by Wano’s rulers and eagerly supported Good’s proposal to rebuild the settlement. He also suggested killing Orochi and making her shogun. She was shocked and initially objected that Kaido would never permit it 21 22.

When Good later threatened to destroy the town unless its residents signed his contract, Yamato challenged his cruelty. His explanation that the villagers hated and distrusted the Beasts Pirates forced her to reconsider her expectations. She resolved to help them even without their affection or gratitude 29.

During Kaido’s expedition, Yamato’s authority supported the Hakumai construction project and the diversion of surplus farm supplies to its workers. At Orochi’s banquet, Good presented the project as proof that Kaido’s only child could eventually lead the Beasts Pirates. He also claimed to be her fiancé, using their closeness to deter Orochi from killing him 35 37 38.

Bandit Campaign and Return to Onigashima

During the campaign against Shutenmaru, Yamato checked Good’s intelligence with Shimotsuki Yasuie and Hyogoro. Confirming that an Oden retainer had committed serious crimes challenged her idealized view of Oden and his followers. Good urged her to distinguish her own aspirations from imitation of a person she knew chiefly through an execution, a journal, and stories 42.

She tended wounded people during the campaign, protected Good from Ushimitsu Kozō’s flying slash, and later used Thunder Bagua to knock away the thief’s headscarf, exposing his blue hair. She stopped the samurai from pursuing him 43 45 47.

Yamato subsequently returned to Onigashima with Good to prepare for Ace’s arrival. Although she hated returning to her former prison, she acknowledged that patience had already won her freedom of movement within Wano. Good estimated that true independence would require at least another five years and ordered her not to attack Ace without permission 49.

Ace’s Invasion and Accession as Shogun

During the Spade Pirates’ attack on Onigashima, Yamato defeated Ace’s crewmates while holding back enough to spare their lives. She ordered them imprisoned, then hurried to Back Mountain to watch Good’s duel with Ace. Ace’s large-scale fire attacks worried her, although she also wanted to fight him herself 51 52.

Good subsequently used the captured Ace to arrange Orochi’s assassination. Yamato was instructed to appear only after Orochi had died and publicly defeat the assassins. Facing Ace, she transformed into her Okuchi no Makami form, unleashed her Haki, and declared that she would not allow trouble in her father’s territory. Following Good’s instruction to attack without restraint, she struck Ace so hard that he disappeared into the distance, exceeding Good’s intention of staging a convincing public victory 54 57 59.

Three days after Orochi’s death, Good announced Yamato as Wano’s next shogun. The five daimyo objected, but Daikoku pledged the Oniwabanshu’s allegiance and Hotei did the same for the Patrol Squad. Good cited her defeat of Orochi’s assassins and Hakumai’s development as qualifications, and the assembled daimyo and officials ultimately knelt to recognize her. That night, Good secretly ordered the daimyo killed and their deaths reported as suicides; Yamato’s involvement in that order is not shown 59.

Yamato was delighted by Orochi’s removal and believed it brought her goal of opening Wano’s borders halfway to fulfillment. In practice, Good handled the administration as her aide and daimyo of Hakumai. When Kaido returned, Good assured him that weapons production and trade remained stable, making clear to the senior officers that Yamato was the public ruler while Good exercised effective control 59 65.

Fire Festival and Arranged Engagement

After Good awakened Conqueror’s Haki, Yamato eagerly attempted to teach him. Her explanation consisted of glaring intensely at bad people, an intuitive description that failed to help him learn 61.

For the Fire Festival, Yamato departed Hakumai with the regional daimyo and a fleet carrying more than twenty-five thousand banquet guests to Onigashima. Citizens voluntarily gathered to wish her a safe journey, and their affection gave her a strong sense of accomplishment. Although she had not yet opened Wano’s borders or defeated Kaido, she felt that she had genuinely helped the country. Kaido, by contrast, dismissed her governing efforts as childish and intended to impress upon her the supremacy of strength 68.

Yamato later watched Good’s prolonged confrontation with Jack near the ruined Ninja Village. Afterward, Kaido arranged her marriage to Good without her consent. She angrily complained about the arrangement and cried in Good’s arms when he offered to discuss it with Kaido 78 81.

Abandoning Oden’s Identity and First Voyage

When Good returned from a later absence, Yamato clung to him and cried from loneliness. Despite her improved position in Wano, she remained eager to leave the country and experience the world 132 133.

After visiting the Golden Inari Shrine, she asked to join Good’s expedition. His agreement delighted her, and she showered him with kisses. During their walk through Hakumai, Good tested her attachment to Oden by mentioning his use of a funeral pyre to cook food. Yamato rejected the act as desecration, acknowledged that her imagined Oden differed from the real man, and declared that she would live as herself rather than imitate him. She also claimed that regular reading had made her more knowledgeable 133.

Aboard the Groudon, Yamato left Wano’s waterfall and saw the open sea for the first time. She cheered as giant koi leaped around the departing ship, finally beginning the overseas adventure she had long desired 133.

Fighting Aokiji on Punk Hazard

On Punk Hazard, Yamato defeated Commodore Kibin with Thunder Bagua, breaking through his Iron Body defense. Aokiji recognized that the other Marines could not overcome her through numbers and intervened personally. When asked her identity, she openly introduced herself as Kaido’s daughter, shocking Marines who had not known of her existence 146 147.

Yamato entered her Okuchi no Makami Human-Beast Form and blocked Aokiji from reaching Good, who was searching Caesar’s laboratories. Aokiji froze the coast and encased her in an Ice Ball, but she broke free unharmed and responded with ice weapons of her own. With freezing ineffective against her, their battle centered on physical attacks and Haki 147 148.

Aokiji’s experience allowed him to injure her with ice spears, but Yamato remained exhilarated by the challenge. She shattered a mountain-sized block of ice with Thunder Bagua, closed the distance using Divine Swiftness, and struck him with White Serpent reinforced by Conqueror’s Haki Infusion. Aokiji survived, and their battle was not decisively resolved before Good returned. Good then ordered Yamato to escort Caesar to the ship while he confronted the admiral and the impending Buster Call 148 149.

Marriage to Good

On a later Fire Festival, Yamato arrived with the shogun’s fleet without knowing that her wedding had been prepared. Black Maria and the bridesmaids escorted her away to dress her, and she was shocked to learn that she would marry that day. The arrangements had been made with the pirates’ characteristic haste rather than after a lengthy engagement ceremony 168.

After the wedding banquet, Good took Yamato to the roof of Skull Castle and promised to hold a grander wedding for her in the future. She described him as gentle, asked him to kiss her, and then stole another kiss. Good created an artificial meteor shower by launching illuminated stone pillars into the night sky, delighting her 169.

The couple later visited God Inari Shrine with Wano’s ministers and samurai. Yamato drew a great-fortune stick during the visit, while Good used the priestess’s divination to seek Zou’s location 171.

Rivalry with Hancock

When Boa Hancock proposed marriage to Good, he refused on the grounds that he was already married to Yamato. He then promised to marry Hancock if she could defeat Yamato. Yamato promptly won their first confrontation with Thunder Bagua 213.

Hancock continued challenging her, receiving repeated defeats over the following months. By the time Cipher Pol 9 witnessed them fighting, Hancock had developed Conqueror’s Haki Infusion and could sustain a much more competitive exchange. Their clashes produced Haki shock waves strong enough to distress the observing agents. At that point, Yamato’s bounty was recorded as 1.06 billion Beli 250.

Joint Battle Against Kaido

While assisting Good’s construction work, Yamato remained eager to return to Onigashima and test her increased strength against Kaido. She also continued to dream of forming her own pirate crew and traveling wherever she wished; Good had not previously allowed her to sail out alone 277.

When they challenged Kaido together, Yamato met her father’s Thunder Bagua directly. Good supported her attacks, and the pair jointly blocked Kaido’s rapid Kundali: Dragon Swarm. Good then synchronized his Haki with hers, linking their Observation Haki so that they could share thoughts and emotions instantaneously 281 282.

Their coordination forced Kaido into Azure Dragon Form. Yamato and Good answered with the combined technique Hakai, severely wounding him and drawing blood from beneath his scales. When they prepared to repeat the attack, Kaido stopped the fight and acknowledged their strength. The Beasts Pirates celebrated afterward, while Kaido eventually flew away to clear his head 282.

Independent Adventure in North Blue

Yamato later led her own crew in North Blue. An earthquake left their ship stranded on newly exposed land, and Antelope convinced the group that they had crossed into another world. Yamato enthusiastically led an inland expedition to defeat the supposed Demon King. After three days, they reached a town and discovered an Adventurers’ Guild 324.

Their apparent arrival in another world was a misunderstanding caused by the earthquakes transforming North Blue’s islands into a vast continent 324.

Appearance

Yamato is white-haired and is described as having an attractive face and figure. Her usual presentation is boyish, and she initially shows little interest in dressing up 2 16.

  • Spa-opening attire: Light makeup, a cheongsam, and twin buns, chosen to give the establishment a distinctive style 18.
  • Former restraints: Seastone Handcuffs worn from age eight until King removes them 10 13.
  • Weapon: Frequently carries a spiked kanabo over her shoulder 12 47.
  • Okuchi no Makami transformation: Develops sharpened teeth, clawed hands, a large fluffy tail, enlarged limbs, and a lengthened, wolf-like face. Icy-blue flames or white mistlike ribbons surround her transformed body 57 147.
  • Partial transformation: Can manifest a fluffy tail without fully entering Human-Beast Form; it appears and wags when she excitedly asks to accompany Good to sea 133.
  • Wedding attire: Black Maria and her bridesmaids prepare her makeup and wedding clothing; she later lifts her wedding dress to sit beside Good on Skull Castle’s roof 168 169.

Personality

Yamato is fiercely defiant and devoted to freedom. Years of near-fatal beatings fail to make her genuinely submit to Kaido. Her admiration for Oden initially shapes both her identity and her belief that defeating her father is the way to save Wano 10 12 22.

Her long isolation leaves her eager for friendship and inexperienced with the wider world. She envies Ulti’s cheering supporters, enthusiastically shares Oden’s history once Good listens to her, and explores the mainland with interest in nearly everything she sees. Good repeatedly exploits her trust and devotion to Oden to influence her decisions 3 10 11 15.

Her compassion does not disappear under that influence. She refuses to personally kill the Kozuki Samurai, objects to Good’s coercion of impoverished villagers, and ultimately chooses to help people even if they hate her. Her understanding of heroism becomes less dependent on being accepted as Oden 13 29.

Her eventual rejection of Oden imitation is explicit rather than merely a public performance. She recognizes that admiration does not require excusing wrongdoing, refuses to desecrate the dead, and chooses to live her own life. She also takes pride in reading and believes she has become less susceptible to Good’s teasing 133.

Yamato remains exuberant and often naïve even as shogun. She runs across her ship’s deck to thank well-wishers, takes enormous pleasure in helping Wano, and later accepts Antelope’s claim that they have entered another world. Her enthusiasm for adventure readily turns into a plan to defeat an imagined Demon King 68 324.

She enjoys fighting powerful opponents. Against Aokiji, pain and danger heighten her excitement rather than discourage her, and she eagerly anticipates testing her improved strength against Kaido. Her intuitive grasp of combat does not translate easily into instruction, as shown by her unsuccessful attempt to teach Good Conqueror’s Haki through glaring 61 147 148 277 281.

Her attachment to Good grows from dependence and trust into open affection. She cries when lonely during his absence, eagerly kisses him when he agrees to take her sailing, and initiates their wedding-night kisses. This affection coexists with her earlier objection to Kaido arranging their marriage without consulting her 81 132 133 169.

Abilities & Skills

Kanabo Combat and Thunder Bagua

Yamato fights with a spiked club and uses Thunder Bagua, a technique copied from Kaido 2.

  • Haki-coated strikes: Wraps her remaining Haki around the kanabo, producing black lightning 2.
  • Speed and force: Strikes Page One before he can evade, shattering his Spinosaurus form’s jaw and fangs 2.
  • Defensive use: Blocks Ulti’s headbutt and Ushimitsu Kozō’s powerful flying slash 3 45.
  • Limit: Injuries, hunger, and exhausted stamina leave her unable to withstand Good’s sustained attacks during her initial capture 4.
  • Full-power launch: Reports knocking Ace entirely out of sight with one unrestricted swing 59.
  • Breaking defensive techniques: Overpowers Kibin’s Iron Body: Steel with Thunder Bagua 146.
  • Large-scale destruction: Shatters a mountain-sized falling block of ice with Thunder Bagua 148.
  • Matching Kaido: Later meets her father’s Thunder Bagua head-on without being immediately overwhelmed, demonstrating a substantial improvement over their earlier encounters 281.

Her later named techniques include the following:

Technique Description
Glacial Falls: Naraku An ice-and-Haki club attack used against Aokiji that creates a massive iceberg 147.
Divine Swiftness A burst of high-speed movement used to evade descending ice spears and rapidly close the distance to Aokiji 148.
White Serpent A powerful club strike delivered after her rapid approach. Against Aokiji, its Conqueror’s Haki Infusion shatters his ice guard and blasts him through a mountain of ice into the ground 148.
Ringing Arrow A ranged shock-wave attack used against Kaido while Good creates an opening 282.
Hakai A combined weapon attack performed with Good. Its enormous shock wave severely wounds Kaido in Azure Dragon Form 282.

Haki

Yamato demonstrates Armament, Observation, and Conqueror’s Haki 3 4 23.

  • Armament Haki: Hardens her forehead against Ulti’s headbutts 3.
  • Observation Haki: Senses Good’s presence after an explosion and concludes that he is not seriously hurt 47.
  • Conqueror’s Haki: Clashes with Doflamingo at Mogura Port, generating a harbor-wide shock wave and rendering nearby pirates unconscious 23.
  • Limit: Cannot maintain Observation Haki while severely depleted during her capture 4.
  • Conqueror’s Haki Infusion: Explicitly reinforces White Serpent with advanced Conqueror’s Haki against Aokiji. The strike releases black-and-red lightning and damages him without the club directly striking his body 148.
  • Presence detection in battle: Recognizes that Aokiji remains active after her infused strike by sensing his presence beneath the dust 148.
  • Instinctive use: Describes releasing Conqueror’s Haki as glaring forcefully at bad people. This reflects her own intuitive experience but proves ineffective as instruction for Good 61.

Strength and Durability

Her constitution allows her to keep fighting after punishment that would incapacitate ordinary pirates 2 3.

  • Sends a dozen pirates flying with broad kanabo swings despite injuries 2.
  • Continues fighting through repeated Haki-coated headbutts and a skull fracture 3.
  • At the time of Good’s dungeon instruction, remains far below Kaido’s strength despite becoming vastly stronger than she was as a child 11.
  • Defeats the Spade Pirates’ crewmates while restraining herself enough to avoid killing them 51.
  • Trades direct blows with Aokiji and continues fighting after receiving cuts to her cheek, waist, and thigh 147 148.
  • During their battle, Aokiji regards her as stronger than himself and considers combat experience his means of winning; this assessment does not establish that she decisively defeats him 148.
  • Later withstands exchanges with Kaido alongside Good, helping force him into Azure Dragon Form before their combined Hakai ends the contest 281 282.

Devil Fruit Power

Yamato possesses the Dog-Dog Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Model: Okuchi no Makami. Its power was suppressed by her Seastone restraints and began stirring when King removed them 13 57.

  • Human-Beast Form: Assumes a powerful wolf-like hybrid form with claws, sharp teeth, a fluffy tail, and mistlike or flame-shaped ribbons around her body 57 147.
  • Enhanced physique: Her Mythical Zoan provides exceptional physical toughness in addition to its supernatural abilities 148.
  • Ice generation: Produces cold air and forms icicle spears to attack opponents 147.
  • Ice-coated weapon: Covers her kanabo in ice while combining its strikes with Haki 57 147.
  • Resistance to freezing: Breaks out of Aokiji’s Ice Ball completely unharmed and experiences the cold as pleasant. Her shared ice attribute prevents his usual freezing attacks from incapacitating her, forcing him to emphasize Haki, physical combat, and the cutting or piercing properties of ice 146 147 148.
  • Partial transformation: Manifests a tail while otherwise retaining her usual appearance 133.

Her appearance after the restraints are removed and her later transformations do not, by themselves, establish a formal Devil Fruit Awakening 13 57 147.

Keen Sense of Smell

Yamato can clearly distinguish scents in the air 43.

  • Good asks her to follow blood scent to locate Shutenmaru’s fleeing bandits 43.
  • She recognizes food aromas while imprisoned, following them until she bumps into her cell bars 9.

Haki Synchronization and Cooperative Combat

During their joint battle against Kaido, Good adjusts his Haki to Yamato’s and connects their Observation Haki. This link allows them to communicate thoughts and emotions instantaneously, supporting coordinated attacks and defenses 281 282.

  • Good follows her attacks and intercepts Kaido’s counters to create further openings 282.
  • Their combined defense blocks the rapid strikes of Kundali: Dragon Swarm more reliably than either could alone 281.
  • They coordinate Ringing Arrow with Good’s close-range attacks and jointly unleash Hakai 282.
  • Yamato finds the synchronized battle unusually comfortable and feels increasingly energized as it continues, though no separate permanent advancement is identified from that sensation 282.

Political Authority and Governance

As shogun, Yamato commands the formal allegiance of the Oniwabanshu, the Patrol Squad, and Wano’s recognized officials. Her military victory over Ace and association with Hakumai’s reconstruction provide the public justification for her accession 59.

Her position should be distinguished from administrative expertise. Good acts as her aide and handles the country’s practical governance, weapons production, and trade. Officials regard him as the effective ruler, while Yamato serves primarily as the public shogun and symbol of the new administration 65 68 133.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Spiked kanabo — Her principal weapon, used for Thunder Bagua and blocking powerful attacks; later combined with ice, Conqueror’s Haki Infusion, and Good’s weapon for Hakai 2 3 45 57 148 282.
  • Oden’s journal — A source of knowledge about her idol’s experiences at sea 10.
  • Seastone Handcuffs — Former restraints that suppressed her strength and Devil Fruit power for fifteen years; removed by King on Kaido’s orders 13.
  • Shogun’s tower ship — Travels to the Fire Festival aboard an enormous tower ship escorted by more than a dozen vessels and the regional daimyo’s ships 68.
  • Adventuring ship — Later travels with her own crew in North Blue; their vessel is stranded on exposed land by an earthquake 324.

Relationships

  • Kaido — Father and former captor. Her public apology gains his approval and greater mobility, but she initially continues seeking independence from his control. He later dismisses her efforts to govern Wano and arranges her marriage without her consent. Their relationship eventually includes a joint challenge by Yamato and Good, after which Kaido acknowledges their strength and stops the fight rather than face a second Hakai 10 12 13 49 68 81 281 282.
  • Groudon Good — Initially her captor, teacher, business partner, and the person she considers her only trusted friend; later her husband. Their early closeness develops romantic ambiguity, and he publicly claims they are engaged before any agreement from her is shown. She objects when Kaido subsequently arranges their marriage, but later openly expresses love and initiates kisses. Good manages Wano as her aide, takes her on her first overseas voyage, and becomes her synchronized combat partner against Kaido 10 11 21 29 30 38 65 81 133 168 169 281 282.
  • Kozuki Oden — Former idol whose death, deeds, and journal inspire her desire for freedom. Her understanding of him is challenged by accounts of his faults and his retainers’ crimes. She ultimately acknowledges the difference between the real Oden and her idealized image, rejects excusing his wrongdoing, and chooses to live as herself 10 42 133.
  • Ulti — Combat opponent whose support network highlights Yamato’s loneliness. Good later declares both women his fiancées 3 38.
  • Page One — Opponent incapacitated by Yamato’s Thunder Bagua during her attempted escape from capture 2.
  • King — Removes her handcuffs but distrusts her apparent submission; devises the Kozuki suppression assignment to test her loyalty. Later witnesses the seamless coordination between Yamato and Good against Kaido 13 282.
  • Komurasaki — Appears alongside Yamato at the spa’s ribbon-cutting ceremony 17.
  • Orochi — Former shogun whom Good proposes replacing with Yamato. Her position as Kaido’s daughter helps restrain his hostility toward their reconstruction project. After his assassination, Yamato defeats Ace as part of Good’s scheme and succeeds Orochi as shogun 22 37 38 54 57 59.
  • Shimotsuki Yasuie and Hyogoro — Help her verify the reports concerning Shutenmaru’s criminal history 42.
  • Portgas D. Ace and the Spade Pirates — Opponents during the attack on Onigashima and the staged aftermath of Orochi’s assassination. Yamato defeats Ace’s crewmates while sparing their lives, then later knocks Ace out of sight with a full-power strike 51 57 59.
  • Daikoku and Hotei — Pledge the Oniwabanshu and Patrol Squad, respectively, to Yamato, securing the military backing for her accession as shogun 59.
  • Wano’s citizens — Initially fear and distrust her as Kaido’s daughter and a member of the Beasts Pirates. Her association with reconstruction and improved living conditions later earns visible affection, with crowds gathering to wish her a safe journey to Onigashima 29 68.
  • Aokiji — Admiral whom she fights on Punk Hazard to prevent him from interfering with Good. Her ice abilities counter his usual freezing tactics, while his experience and Haki make him a formidable opponent 147 148.
  • Black Maria — Oversees Yamato’s preparation with the bridesmaids for her hurried wedding to Good 168.
  • Boa Hancock — Romantic rival who challenges Yamato for the chance to marry Good. Yamato initially defeats her decisively, but their repeated battles eventually become more competitive after Hancock develops Conqueror’s Haki Infusion 213 250.
  • Antelope — Accompanies her later North Blue adventure and persuades the crew that their earthquake-stranded ship has crossed into another world, prompting Yamato’s search for a supposed Demon King 324.
