Arc 3The Philosopher’s Stone

Harry and his friends uncover the threat to the Philosopher’s Stone, move Hagrid’s dragon, and descend beneath the school to confront Quirrell. After Harry recovers and the school year ends, Fred and George approach him with a plan.

  • Harry tested the Invisibility Cloak in the library, then taught Ron Occlumency after they explored the Mirror of Erised.
  • Hermione connected Dzou Yen’s alchemical research to the Philosopher’s Stone, and Ron told Harry that Snape and Quirrell had discussed Fluffy and the trapdoor.
  • Harry and his friends learned that several professors protected the Stone, while McGonagall took Ron and Neville to Ollivanders to find them suitable wands.
  • Draco became devoted to Norbert, but Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville helped Hagrid send the dragon to a sanctuary, costing them 150 points and earning them the Gryffindors’ resentment.
  • Harry and Draco found a hooded figure drinking from a dead unicorn in the Forbidden Forest, and Firenze warned Harry about the danger and the creature’s possible connection to unicorn blood.
  • After their exams, Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville went through the trapdoor, overcame Devil’s Snare and the chessboard, and left Ron and Neville behind as Harry and Hermione continued.
  • Harry found Quirrell by the Mirror of Erised and was tortured after Quirrell discovered his Occlumency, and Dumbledore later told Harry that Quirrell was dead and Voldemort had fled.
  • Harry recovered, received a photo album of his parents, and learned his exam results before Parvati invited him to visit her home, and Fred and George then asked about his vault and proposed a plan.
Chapters 51–75 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 51A Night of Frights in the Castle

On Christmas night, Harry tested whether his Invisibility Cloak could help him enter the Restricted Section and search for information about the Philosopher's Stone. He reached the library without trouble, but the chapter ended before he faced the portraits guarding the section.

  • Harry wondered why using Occlumency and Occlumency together made the Invisibility Cloak produce a terrifying shriek, and he agreed with Ron to keep the cloak secret from Fred and George.
  • Harry, Ron, Percy, Fred, and George celebrated Christmas with games and a lavish feast, and Ron defeated Percy at Wizard's Chess.
  • After Ron fell asleep, Harry remembered Hermione's plan to search the Restricted Section and decided to test the Invisibility Cloak there alone.
  • Harry put on the cloak, left the Gryffindor common room, and made his way through the dark castle to the library.

Ch. 52Professor, Please Stop Talking

Harry investigated an ornate mirror that seemed to reveal people’s deepest desires and brought Ron to test it. The mirror showed Ron’s ambitions until he used Occlumency, leaving Harry’s own vision unexplained.

  • Ron saw himself as Head Boy, House Cup winner, and Quidditch captain in the mirror.
  • Harry recalled that the mirror had shown him with pixelated friends, then revealed him happily watching a beautiful female professor teach.
  • Harry suspected the mirror showed innermost desires rather than surface thoughts.
  • Harry taught Ron Occlumency, and Ron learned to use it after practicing through the morning.
  • Ron looked into the mirror again and saw nothing after using Occlumency.
  • Harry explained his theory, then steered Ron away from asking what Harry had seen.

Ch. 53After Christmas

Harry spoke with Dumbledore about his Occlumency, learned that Voldemort and Professor McGonagall had been exceptionally gifted students, and discovered that the Mirror of Erised would be moved the next day. The chapter ended with Dumbledore claiming the mirror showed him holding a pair of woollen socks, though Harry doubted him.

  • Harry blushed as Dumbledore teased him about the girls he liked, then Dumbledore praised his first-year Occlumency.
  • Dumbledore said Voldemort and Professor McGonagall were the only other young wizards of Harry's calibre, and described McGonagall's achievements as a student.
  • Dumbledore told Harry that the Mirror of Erised would be moved the next day, and Harry regretted not being able to see what Hermione wanted most.
  • Harry asked Dumbledore what he saw in the mirror, and Dumbledore said he saw himself holding a pair of thick woollen socks.
  • Harry privately doubted Dumbledore's answer.

Ch. 54Ron held himself back

Hermione used a wizard card featuring Dzou Yen to uncover a possible origin for the Philosopher’s Stone. She left Harry and Ron with the theory that Snape might be interested in the Stone because it could improve potion brewing.

  • Neville showed Harry and Ron his new Dzou Yen wizard card, and Hermione rushed off after seeing it.
  • Hermione returned with a heavy book and explained that Dzou Yen had been a close friend of Ptolemy, the seer who proposed the Philosopher’s Stone.
  • Hermione read that Dzou Yen had sought an alchemical product to improve the success rate of brewing potions.
  • Hermione theorized that Dzou Yen had first researched the Philosopher’s Stone for that purpose, and Harry connected this to Snape’s expertise in Potions.

Ch. 55Poor Professor Quirrell

After Harry helped Gryffindor win its first two post-Christmas Quidditch matches, Ron told Harry that Snape had been threatening Quirrell and that they had mentioned the Three-Headed Dog. The friends discussed the Philosopher’s Stone and Neville reasoned that the trapdoor must have more protections than the dog alone.

  • Harry caught the Snitch to secure Gryffindor’s victory over Ravenclaw despite the Chasers’ early deficit.
  • Wood put Ron in the lineup for Gryffindor’s next match, and Harry caught the Snitch after five minutes as Gryffindor won by a landslide.
  • Ron told Harry that he had seen Snape pinning Quirrell against a wall and overheard them mention the Three-Headed Dog.
  • Harry took Ron, Hermione, and Neville to an empty classroom, where Ron explained the Philosopher’s Stone and its hiding place beneath the dog’s trapdoor.
  • Neville suggested that Dumbledore and the professors had placed additional defenses around the Philosopher’s Stone, and Hermione agreed.

Ch. 56The reason

Harry was surprised that Professor Quirrell endured Snape’s pressure, while Ron and Neville improved in their studies but still struggled to cast magic. Harry began practicing the Protective Charm with them and set out to investigate why their spellcasting lagged behind their growing magical and mental power.

  • Harry saw Professor Quirrell grow pale and drained over the following weeks but continue to withstand Snape’s harsh treatment.
  • Harry noticed that Ron, Neville, and Hermione had increased magical and mental power, though Ron and Neville still struggled to cast spells.
  • After the Slytherin–Hufflepuff Quidditch match, Harry went with Ron and Neville to an unused classroom to practice magic.
  • Harry explained the Protective Charm’s capabilities and demonstrated that he could raise a strong shield.
  • Ron tried to cast the Protective Charm twice, but neither attempt produced any effect.

Ch. 57Resolving the wand problem

Harry, Ron, and Neville asked Professor McGonagall whether their wands could be causing their spellcasting problems, and she confirmed that wands could affect magic, especially when used by someone other than their owner. She offered to contact Ron’s and Neville’s mothers about replacing the wands, but Ron said his family could not afford one.

  • Harry, Ron, and Neville visited Professor McGonagall to ask whether wands could affect spellcasting.
  • Professor McGonagall explained that wands chose their owners and could resist being used by other wizards, with the effect especially pronounced in some unicorn-hair wands.
  • Harry told Professor McGonagall that he suspected Ron’s and Neville’s difficulties came from using wands that were not their own.
  • Professor McGonagall offered to write to Mrs. Weasley and Madam Longbottom to ask them to replace the boys’ wands.
  • Ron said his family was short of money and that Ginny would start school the following year.

Ch. 58A new wand

Professor McGonagall took Harry, Ron, and Neville to Diagon Alley so Neville and Ron could choose wands. Neville quickly found a wand that suited him, while Ollivander kept searching for the right one for Ron.

  • Professor McGonagall led Harry, Ron, and Neville through Floo Powder to Diagon Alley.
  • Professor McGonagall brought the three boys to Ollivanders Wand Shop, where Ollivander recognized them and noticed Harry had not maintained his wand.
  • Neville tried the second wand Ollivander offered and successfully cast the Protective Charm.
  • Ollivander began fitting Ron with a wand, but although Ron produced magic with every wand he tried, Ollivander repeatedly said each one was not quite right.
  • Ollivander tested forty-seven more wands on Ron without finding a suitable match.

Ch. 59The second half of the school year

Harry, Ron, Neville, and Hermione spent the weeks before Easter facing Hermione’s intense revision plans and a mountain of holiday homework. While studying in the Library, they unexpectedly encountered Hagrid.

  • Ron and Neville improved in Transfiguration and Charms, while Harry struggled with increasingly difficult Potions lessons and received help from his friends.
  • Hermione began planning for exams more than two months in advance and pushed Harry, Ron, and Neville to revise with her.
  • The professors assigned a heavy workload for the Easter holidays, prompting the first-years to complain and Hermione to urge everyone to study.
  • Harry, Ron, Neville, and Hermione spent the next few days working in the Library.
  • Ron and Harry looked up in surprise when they saw Hagrid in the Library.

Ch. 60Dragon

Harry and the others visited Hagrid to ask about the Philosopher’s Stone’s protections, and Hermione persuaded him to name the professors involved. The visit took a startling turn when Harry discovered Hagrid had acquired a dragon.

  • Harry, Ron, Neville, and Hermione went to Hagrid’s Hut to ask about the Philosopher’s Stone.
  • Hagrid said he knew little about the protections and initially refused to tell them more.
  • Hermione flattered Hagrid until he revealed that Professors McGonagall, Flitwick, Sprout, Snape, and Quirrell were involved in protecting the Stone.
  • Harry discovered that Hagrid had acquired a dragon and realized keeping one was dangerous.

Ch. 61Draco followed his heart

Harry and Ron stopped Draco from running to the castle after he discovered Hagrid’s dragon, Norbert. Draco’s hostility gave way to fascination when he saw the dragon, revealing that he was an avid dragon enthusiast.

  • Harry used his wrist-mounted wand gadget to cast the Leg-Locker Curse on Draco, causing him to fall in the grass.
  • Ron taunted the restrained Draco while Harry and the others surrounded him.
  • Draco began to sneer at Hagrid’s dragon, but fell silent when he saw Norbert.
  • Draco stared at Norbert with intense fascination because he had long wanted a dragon of his own, though Lucius Malfoy and Narcissa had refused to let him raise one.

Ch. 62The plan

Harry and his friends decided that Norbert had grown too large to keep hidden and arranged to send him to the Dragon Sanctuary where Ron’s brother worked. Draco and Hagrid were reluctant to part with him, but Draco could only spend the remaining days caring for the dragon.

  • Draco began visiting Hagrid’s Hut almost every evening with food and drink, supposedly to check that his oath remained in force, while he secretly doted on Norbert.
  • Ron complained that Draco had stopped picking on him, and Neville warned that Norbert would soon be too large to hide.
  • Harry persuaded Hagrid that keeping Norbert could cause trouble for Dumbledore, and Hagrid reluctantly agreed to send the dragon away.
  • Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville decided Norbert would go to the Dragon Sanctuary where Ron’s brother worked, despite Draco’s objections.
  • Draco helped Hagrid care for Norbert using the Malfoy family’s dragon-raising knowledge, and his devotion to the dragon earned Hagrid’s goodwill.

Ch. 63An unexpected turn after the plan

Harry, Ron, Neville, and Hermione secretly carried Hagrid’s baby dragon toward the Astronomy Tower, using an Invisibility Cloak that grew when Harry wished it larger. Hermione then used a levitation charm to lift the heavy crate.

  • Harry and Ron prepared to move the baby dragon, and Neville and Hermione joined them for the nighttime trip.
  • Hagrid gave them the dragon in a tough, fireproof crate and tearfully watched them carry it away.
  • The four friends struggled to fit beneath the Invisibility Cloak with the crate, but Harry made the cloak grow larger.
  • They entered the Castle and struggled up the Astronomy Tower stairs with the heavy crate.
  • Hermione cast Wingardium Leviosa on the crate to make it easier to carry.

Ch. 64Punishment

Harry, Hermione, Neville, and Ron faced the fallout from losing Gryffindor 150 points after the Astronomy Tower incident, then heard Professor Quirrell sobbing that he could not do something again. When Ron suspected Snape was pursuing the Philosopher’s Stone, Hermione insisted they avoid more trouble and concentrate on exams.

  • Ron apologized to Harry, Hermione, and Neville for staying behind, and they reassured him that he had made the right choice.
  • Gryffindor students shunned Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville after learning they had lost 150 points, while Harry also noticed Padma growing distant.
  • Harry spent the next days revising with his friends and, on his way back from the Library, heard Professor Quirrell pleading and sobbing in an empty classroom.
  • Ron concluded that Snape had learned how to get past Quirrell’s magic, but Hermione pointed out that Fluffy still guarded the way.
  • Hermione urged the group to tell Dumbledore or focus on exams rather than snoop for evidence, and Harry agreed to end the discussion.

Ch. 65The Forbidden Forest (Part One)

Hagrid led Harry, Neville, and Draco into the Forbidden Forest as punishment, where he explained that they needed to find a badly injured unicorn. The group followed a trail of unicorn blood into the dangerous forest.

  • Draco denied breaking his oath to keep Harry's dragon secret, and Hagrid confirmed that the oath had ended when Norbert left Hogwarts.
  • Hagrid told Draco he had to accept Hogwarts' punishment or go home, so Draco entered the Forbidden Forest with Harry and Neville.
  • Hagrid warned the boys about the dangers in the forest and gave each of them fireworks.
  • Hagrid showed Harry, Neville, and Draco unicorn blood and said a unicorn had been badly injured, after he had found another dead one the previous week.
  • Harry asked what could hurt a unicorn, recalling that unicorns were powerful magical creatures with strong defenses.

Ch. 66The Forbidden Forest (Part Two)

Harry and Draco followed the Unicorn’s blood trail into the Forbidden Forest and found the Unicorn dead. A hooded figure began drinking its blood, and Harry sent up Hagrid’s warning firework as Draco and Fang fled in panic.

  • Hagrid warned Harry and Draco to stay on the path and set off fireworks if they found anything, then the pair continued into the forest.
  • Harry remembered that Hagrid’s assurances might not apply to the creature that had come from outside the forest, but kept his concern to himself.
  • Harry and Draco followed increasingly frequent traces of Unicorn blood to a clearing, where they found the Unicorn’s corpse.
  • A hooded figure emerged from the bushes and drank from the Unicorn’s wound.
  • Harry fired a warning rocket, while Draco and Fang bolted; Fang’s leash caught Draco’s legs and sent him crashing to the ground.

Ch. 67The Forbidden Forest (Part Two)

Harry and Draco encountered Firenze and other centaurs after a creature fled the clearing, and learned that someone had been hunting unicorns. The centaurs escorted them toward Hagrid, while Firenze left Harry to consider what unicorn blood could do.

  • Firenze recognized Harry as a Potter and warned him that the Forbidden Forest was dangerous.
  • Harry threatened Draco for insulting Hagrid, and Bane arrived with a group of centaurs.
  • Firenze insisted on taking Harry and Draco to Hagrid, and Bane reluctantly agreed to accompany him.
  • Firenze hinted that the creature Harry had seen might be connected to unicorn blood.
  • Draco explained that drinking unicorn blood could prolong life but cursed the drinker with a fate worse than death.

Ch. 68Bad news

Harry feared Snape would steal the Philosopher’s Stone to revive Voldemort, but nothing happened while he and his friends waited anxiously and prepared for final exams. After the exams, Harry’s confidence rose, though his scar began hurting constantly and Occlumency only eased the pain temporarily.

  • Harry told Ron, Hermione, and Neville that Snape might use the Philosopher’s Stone to resurrect Voldemort, and Hermione tried to reassure him by invoking Dumbledore and the uncertainty of the centaurs’ prophecy.
  • Harry spent the next few days on edge, but the Three-Headed Dog’s snores convinced him that Snape had not passed the forbidden corridor.
  • Harry, Neville, and Ron fell behind on Hermione’s revision plan and feared they would fail their final exams.
  • Harry found most of the exams easier than expected, while Hermione lamented that a capitalization mistake might cost her full marks in History of Magic.
  • After the exams, Harry noticed that his forehead scar had been hurting constantly, though maintaining Occlumency eased the pain.

Ch. 69The Foursome on the Offensive (Part One)

Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville entered the passage beneath the trapdoor after finding Fluffy asleep beside an enchanted harp. They landed on Devil’s Snare, which began binding them as Neville urged everyone to relax.

  • Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville reached the open door to Fluffy’s room and found the dog asleep to the sound of a self-playing harp.
  • Harry realized Snape had already gone down the trapdoor, and Ron opened it and jumped in first.
  • Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville followed Ron down the deep, curving passage and landed on something soft.
  • The plant beneath them revealed itself as Devil’s Snare and began tightening its vines around them.
  • Neville told everyone to relax because struggling would make Devil’s Snare tighten, and Hermione recognized the plant.

Ch. 70The foursome advances (part two)

Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Neville faced a wizard’s chess challenge that Ron won by sacrificing his knight, though he injured his ankle escaping the board. Harry and Hermione continued toward the Philosopher’s Stone and found a defeated mountain troll and Snape’s potions-and-logic challenge.

  • Hermione took a rook’s place, Neville a bishop’s, Harry the queen’s, and Ron mounted a knight so the chess game could begin.
  • Ron outmaneuvered the opposing pieces while avoiding moves that would endanger Harry, Hermione, or Neville.
  • Ron leaped clear when the enemy queen struck his knight, but he twisted his ankle on broken chess pieces as Harry checkmated the opponent.
  • Neville stayed behind to care for Ron and urged Harry and Hermione to continue before Snape could reach the Philosopher’s Stone.
  • Harry and Hermione found a mountain troll already defeated, then encountered Snape’s potions challenge, which also contained a logic puzzle.

Ch. 71First Encounter with Voldemort

Harry’s duel with Quirrell ended in Harry being disarmed and losing his right arm to a dark spell. Quirrell floated him before the Mirror of Erised and discovered that Harry was using Occlumency before ordering him to stop.

  • Harry attacked Quirrell, but Quirrell dodged his spells and disarmed him.
  • Harry tried to stun Quirrell, who shattered the spell with a black blade and severed Harry’s right arm.
  • Quirrell stopped Harry’s bleeding and floated him in front of the Mirror of Erised, demanding to know what he saw.
  • Harry’s pain and Occlumency kept the Mirror from revealing anything, and Quirrell recognized that Harry was using Occlumency.
  • Quirrell ordered Harry to stop using Occlumency and cast a torture spell on him.

Ch. 72A conversation with Dumbledore

Harry woke in the Hogwarts Hospital Wing with his arm restored and asked Dumbledore what had happened after he passed out. Dumbledore told him the Philosopher’s Stone was safe and Quirrell was dead, but had not yet explained what happened to the Stone.

  • Harry woke from a dream of a young woman and man, then discovered his severed arm had been restored.
  • Dumbledore soothed Harry’s agitation and confirmed that Harry was awake in the Hospital Wing.
  • Harry asked about Quirrell, Voldemort, and the Philosopher’s Stone after remembering their confrontation.
  • Dumbledore told Harry that he had protected the Philosopher’s Stone and that admirers had sent him gifts.
  • Dumbledore said Quirrell was dead and Voldemort had fled, then began to explain what had happened to the Philosopher’s Stone.

Ch. 73Draco thought they were very noisy

After recovering from his confrontation with Quirrell, Harry learned more about Snape’s hatred of his father and received an album of his parents’ photographs from Hagrid. He joined his friends at the leaving feast, where Parvati Patil sat beside him.

  • Dumbledore told Harry that his father had been Snape’s sworn enemy and had once saved Snape’s life, deepening Harry’s dislike of Snape.
  • Hagrid gave Harry a photo album of his parents and explained that he had gathered many of the pictures from their former classmates.
  • Harry noticed several men who appeared frequently in the photographs but could not ask Hagrid who they were before Hagrid left.
  • Madam Pomfrey confirmed Harry had recovered and allowed him to attend the leaving feast.
  • Harry learned Gryffindor had lost the Quidditch Cup final to Hufflepuff and expected Slytherin to win the House Cup again.
  • Harry joined Ron, Hermione, and Neville at the Great Hall feast, and Parvati Patil squeezed in beside him.

Ch. 74The end of term

Harry, Ron, Neville, and Hermione finished the school year, celebrated Gryffindor winning the House Cup, and learned their exam results. As the students prepared to leave Hogwarts, Harry explained why he had to stay with his relatives until early August, and Parvati invited him to visit her home.

  • Harry and Ron earned better exam results than they expected, Hermione came first in most subjects, and Neville topped Herbology.
  • Ron took Harry, Neville, and Hermione to the Library to search for books about Magic Puppets, but they found nothing useful.
  • The students received notices forbidding them from using magic at home during the holidays, frustrating Harry and Fred or George.
  • Harry told Parvati that he had no holiday plans and had to stay with a blood relative until early August to maintain his mother's Protective Magic.
  • Parvati invited Harry to visit her home and see magic unlike what they had at Hogwarts.

Ch. 75The Twins' plan

On the morning of their departure from Hogwarts, Fred and George approached Harry about his vault and proposed working with him. The chapter ended as they began to explain their plan, which Harry suspected was an excuse to borrow money.

  • Fred and George quietly asked Harry whether he had a vault of his own, and Harry nodded.
  • Harry reflected on the Potter Family’s history, wealth, and efforts to leave the ranks of pure-blood families.
  • Harry recalled that his vault held hundreds of thousands of Galleons and that Dumbledore and the Ministry of Magic managed his other holdings.
  • Fred and George proposed working with Harry, and Harry suspected they wanted to borrow money.
  • Fred and George ignored Harry’s doubtful expression and quietly told him their plan.
