Chapter 41: Converter × Supply Pack

Killer Queen appeared the instant the Wallet bit Joey's hand and reached out to grab it.

But before Killer Queen's hand could get close, the Wallet suddenly zipped through the bite wound in Joey's hand and burrowed into his body.

Before Joey's eyes, the entire Wallet transformed into a strange gaseous form and vanished into his arm!

Only the few remaining bills and coins inside it fell to the floor with a clatter.

"How is that possible?"

Joey's expression changed drastically!

The next second, Killer Queen vanished as well, and Joey felt all the aura in his body rush toward his arm.

In barely half a minute, Joey collapsed onto the bed. The Wallet had absorbed every last bit of his aura.

He had even been forced into a state of Zetsu.

But a second later, a great surge of aura rich in life force emerged from Joey's right hand and rapidly spread throughout his body.

Before long, Joey's aura had returned to its previous level, except now all the aura in his body was rich in life force.

At the same time, Joey noticed that a tattoo of a ferocious insect had quietly appeared on the back of his right hand.

The single-horned insect appeared to be roaring at the sky, looking nothing like the disgusting creature Joey remembered.

In fact, after looking at it a little longer, he found that the insect tattoo possessed a strange beauty and imposing presence.

"What is this? Customer photos versus promotional photos? An unfiltered camera versus an unbeatable beauty filter?" Joey's eyes widened.

But just then, he discovered that his body was slowly producing Nen again as time passed.

This was his own Nen recovering and replenishing itself, but the Fierce Insect tattoo on the back of his hand rapidly devoured every bit that appeared.

It was as though the Fierce Insect was replenishing its own reserves.

Joey furrowed his drooping brows slightly. After testing the aura in his body, he quickly entered a state of Ten.

Time ticked by, and Ten continually consumed the life-force-rich Nen in his body. Without replenishment, this Nen gradually dwindled as it was used up.

His attempt to practice "Ren" even caused the rate of consumption to increase dramatically.

A little over twenty minutes later, Joey collapsed onto the bed.

By then, no life-force-rich Nen remained in his body, and the Fierce Insect tattoo devoured all the new aura he produced.

Joey still had not recovered when Palm called him to eat, so he could only politely decline and remain in his room.

Over five hours later, the Fierce Insect tattoo gradually changed, slowly squeezing out of Joey's right hand and turning back into the gleaming Wallet.

Looking at its glow, Joey arrived at a conclusion.

A little over five hours was roughly how long it took him to fully replenish his aura twice while in Zetsu.

But throughout that time, all the aura in his body had flowed into the Fierce Insect.

The amount of aura emanating from the Wallet was now almost equal to Joey's own potential aura capacity.

In other words, a single conversion required all the Nen Joey recovered over two replenishment cycles. By his calculations, that was equivalent to 1.5 times his potential aura capacity, since recovery through Zetsu did not restore him to one hundred percent each time.

Fortunately, Joey could still summon Killer Queen during that period. Otherwise, he would have been completely at anyone's mercy.

His aura was still slowly recovering, but the exhaustion of repeatedly draining it left his eyelids heavy.

At last, Joey was beginning to understand what the Wallet did.

The Wallet seemed to be a converter!

A converter that could temporarily turn his aura, which should have belonged to Emission, into Specialization aura.

Joey also understood how to use this converter: he had to absorb the aura enveloping the Wallet.

He knew exactly how much aura surrounded it, too. It was equal to his entire potential aura capacity.

However, the Wallet's aura should gradually replenish while it sat idle, seemingly at about the same rate as Joey's normal recovery.

By that reckoning, the Wallet was both a converter and a supply pack!

Was this the real perk of being a transmigrator?

Joey suddenly felt that insects were not so bad after all. The faint unease he had developed toward this Wallet with its suddenly appearing, hideous mouth vanished in an instant.

He kept stroking the Wallet in his hand, looking for all the world as though he could not bear to put it down.

With the Wallet serving as both converter and supply pack, Joey could absolutely practice "Gold Experience."

Still, Ming devoured souls and longed to return to life after death. Combined with the New Continent Travelogue's account that Ming's corpse contained a great deal of life force, all of that could explain why the Wallet's aura contained life force.

But what about that insect mouth that suddenly appeared? Did Ming really have a way to come back to life?

Or had Ming not completely died, even after turning into a Wallet?

Had some special circumstance allowed Ming to survive in another form of life?

Then perhaps the missing portion of aura, beyond what the Wallet released, had something to do with its condition.

Joey considered that last possibility the most likely. Ming was actually still alive, just in a form that was much harder to kill.

In particular, Joey felt that no matter how he tried to intercept it, he could not have stopped the Wallet from entering his body. At that instant, he had felt a close connection at the level of his soul.

It was as though part of his soul was still hidden inside the Wallet.

Perhaps the soul was the key to everything!

Joey-no, to be precise, the souls of Joey, Yoshikage Kira, the nameless native, and Ming had already become closely connected when Ming used that ability.

Furrowing his drooping brows, Joey held the Wallet in one hand and carefully sensed the aura it transmitted to him. It still carried life energy, and its flow remained slow.

As his excitement subsided, a measure of wariness slowly crept into Joey's heart.

Replacing his aura with the Wallet's aura once would require at least two days of continuously absorbing aura from it.

That rate was quite decent as far as Joey was concerned.

And honestly, obtaining a converter and a supply pack already made him feel that this adventure had paid off handsomely.

When the Wallet merged with his body, he could sense that it bore him no ill will. It even seemed somewhat happy.

Carefully recalling everything that had happened, Joey got up, found pen and paper, and wrote it all down in Chinese, point by point.

Then he studied his notes, seriously examining every possibility.

But a little over half an hour later, he was slumped over his desk, snoring softly.

Instantly exhausting his Nen, everything he had experienced over the past two days, and the ceaseless pain where his hand had been severed had long since left him utterly exhausted, both physically and mentally.

Even managing to study the Wallet for this long had pushed him to his limit.

Joey slept until Palm knocked on his door again. "Time to eat."

Judging by her footsteps, Palm had left right after knocking and calling out.

"Coming. Thanks." Joey answered quickly, stood up with a yawn, stretched his weary body, and opened the door to head toward the living room.

Before he reached it, Joey heard a commotion coming from the living room.

It seemed Killua and Gon were back, but there appeared to be another female voice as well. Had Biscuit arrived?

Joey was still quite familiar with this part of the story. This could be considered Killua and Gon's second intensive Nen Ability training session.

And their trainer was once again Biscuit, the Gem Hunter.

Joey had long been interested in this woman, who usually maintained the appearance of a little girl but revealed a musclebound Barbie form whenever she entered combat mode, so he could not help quickening his pace.
