Chapter 42: Biscuit × Ability Development
As Joey rounded the corner, he saw Killua and Gon in a state of Ren, unleashing their aura at full power.
Both were visibly sweating. They had clearly been maintaining that state for quite a while.
Sitting opposite them was a girl with her blond hair pinned up, who looked about the same age as Killua.
The girl was flipping through a copy of Muscle Man Magazine. Apparently hearing his footsteps, she looked up, a blush still lingering on her small face. She looked rather cute.
"Huh? Who are you, handsome?"
"It's nice to meet you. I'm Joey," Joey greeted her politely.
The girl quickly stood and darted over to Joey. Hiding the magazine behind her back, she held out a hand. "Hello, I'm Biscuit."
Joey shook her hand with his right. "Miss Biscuit, are you here to give Killua and Gon special training?"
"Just call me Biscuit. Yes, Palm asked me to come. Are you planning to return to NGL too?" Biscuit's gaze fell on the bandages around Joey's left hand. "We've only just met, but I think you should give up!"
Joey paused, not expecting Biscuit to be so blunt. "Thank you. And I don't want to go back. I just came over to mooch a meal. If possible, I'd also like to train my Nen and develop my ability while I'm here."
"Develop your ability?" Biscuit studied Joey carefully, then shook her head. "You only awakened your Nen recently, didn't you?"
Joey had expected Biscuit's keen eye. He nodded. "Strictly speaking, it's been about forty hours since I learned to use Ten."
Biscuit shook her head. "Then you should be working on the basics, not developing your own finishing move."
"I'm a Specialist." Joey offered just that one reason.
"Huh?" Killua, Gon, and even Palm, who was setting dishes on the dining table, all exclaimed in surprise.
"A Specialist?"
"That's right." As he spoke, Joey activated his Ten and plucked a leaf from a nearby potted plant.
He carefully infused the leaf with Wallet's aura, and the stem began to grow at an incredible speed.
"Life force?" Biscuit's large eyes lit up.
"Yes, my Nen contains life force, so I want to develop it into an ability that gives life force to objects I've touched, bringing them to life," Joey explained his idea.
Specialization abilities were probably the easiest of the six categories to develop initially. After all, their Nen already had a unique quality. Even if that didn't reveal the full extent of a suitable ability at a glance, it still let the user settle on a direction quickly.
Biscuit's gaze moved between Joey's missing hand and his earnest face. "You want to restore your hand?"
"Yes." His handsome, downturned brows straightened into a serious expression as Joey nodded solemnly.
"I can't help you." Biscuit shook her head.
"Why?" Joey blurted out, then his expression dimmed. "Sorry. That was presumptuous of me."
He really had been too impatient ever since meeting Biscuit.
He hadn't taken the time to get to know her properly. He was interacting with the real Biscuit entirely on the basis of what he knew about her from the manga.
But why should Biscuit help him? They were complete strangers, and he wasn't some beautiful gemstone.
He suddenly recalled the Emission affinity he had shown when testing his Nen Ability.
Careless and impatient. That assessment really did suit him.
"It's all right. I only said I couldn't help because you don't need help. You already have a goal and an idea. As long as you firmly believe you can do it and work toward it, you can develop your Nen. What would you need my help for?"
Biscuit gave him her answer. "If you want to learn some Nen basics, I don't mind teaching you. I'll be staying here for a while because of these two idiots anyway. It's not as though I'll have anything else to do."
"Thank you." Joey smiled and offered Biscuit his sincere thanks.
"Let's eat." Seeing that their discussion was over, Palm called to Joey and Biscuit from a distance.
As for Killua and Gon, their training wasn't finished yet.
After eating, Joey maintained his Ten and began his own training.
According to Biscuit, the best training for him now was to use his Nen more and feel the effects it produced when infused into different objects.
This was both a foundation for training his Nen Ability and preparation for developing his own Hatsu in the future.
Joey trusted her completely, so he began infusing different objects with Wallet's aura beside Killua and Gon.
At first, nothing happened when he infused aura into inanimate objects. But gradually, as Joey's conviction grew stronger, the things he infused began to change shape ever so slightly.
Though the changes were tiny, they still caught the attention of both Joey and Biscuit, who had been watching him all along.
"Your conviction really is strong." Biscuit's gaze swept over Joey's missing hand again, but then she frowned slightly. "Conviction is inseparable from a person's soul. The stronger and more exceptional the soul, the stronger the conviction it can unleash. With conviction as strong as yours, your soul must be outstanding too."
"Yes, I have some confidence in my soul." Joey wiped the sweat from his forehead.
He had harbored doubts too, but whenever he thought of his missing hand, his resolve returned.
Besides, in his view, the key to Gold Experience was life force. Since he had aura rich in life force, why couldn't he create Gold Experience?
"Hatsu is actually more like a product of spiritual conviction combined with life energy. Different people have different convictions, and their aura has different Nen affinities. That's why people can create countless unexpected Nen Abilities based on their convictions and categories."
Biscuit explained some of the basics of Hatsu to Joey. "Judging by the changes so far, your Nen has boundless life force. Infusing objects and giving them life is its defining characteristic.
"That means your idea really can work. As long as your conviction is strong enough and you're committed enough to creating living things, keep training, and success won't be far off."
There was one thing Biscuit left unsaid: if Joey truly could create body parts to repair his body, his future would have no limits.
Biscuit thought very highly of Joey. In particular, even their brief interaction had given her some understanding of his character.
Polite, humble, and persistent-those were excellent qualities. Impatience, a little carelessness, and a touch of sensitivity were features of his personality. They didn't quite fit a Specialist, but in Joey's case, they made him feel reassuring.
In Biscuit's eyes, someone like that was relatively easy to get along with.
And Biscuit rather liked that type of person. Spending time with them wasn't tiring.
Joey smiled faintly. Biscuit's affirmation was the greatest praise he could have received.
It also made him even more certain that his idea could work!
And he understood the potential of Gold Experience!
If he truly developed the ability to create body parts and repair injuries, then merely revealing that ability would likely make his standing in the Hunter Association rise rapidly.
Even major powers like the V5 would extend enthusiastic invitations once they learned of his existence.
After all, who could be sure they didn't know a few friends who had suffered serious injuries? Especially in the dangerous world of hunters.
Only Joey knew that his ability would serve himself most of the time. Once he managed to create living body parts and restore his left hand, he would switch back to Emission and train his Nen from the basics.
Specialization, particularly the "Gold Experience" he was creating to heal himself, would mainly serve supportive purposes such as healing and gathering intelligence. For combat, Emission suited him better.
After all, that was his genuine affinity.
Besides, he didn't trust Wallet!
