Power Progression
Star ratings measure demon power, not total fighting strength; physical attributes and special abilities can let a combatant defeat higher-ranked opponents 69.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Newly formed — three-star demon power | 69 260 | Born through the fusion of Onigumo and numerous demons. Initially far weaker than Inuyasha in direct combat, relying chiefly on disguise and deception. |
| Early development — at most four-and-a-half stars | 48 | Li Xia’s estimate before Naraku completes his major fusion-monster enhancement. His maximized Four Souls give him exceptional growth potential. |
| Fusion-monster absorption — five-star development | 48 73 79 95 | Absorbs the strongest creature cultivated through his underground demon-fusion technique, then adjusts his disassembled body during his Weakening Period. Subsequently assessed at no less than five stars. |
| Shikon-assisted modifications and incarnation creation | 91 | Uses numerous Shikon Shards to enhance his body and create Kanna, Kagura, and Goshinki. His blue barrier remains vulnerable to Sesshomaru’s true-form bite. |
| Reconstructed body and specialized assimilations | 117 118 | Incorporates demons including the Blade-Arm Mantis, Heavy Turtle, and Golden-Eating Insect; deliberately seeks abilities suited to fighting human practitioners. |
| Pink barrier — five-and-a-half-star classification | 69 138 | Demonstrates the pink barrier associated with this rating, stopping the remaining force of Li Xia’s multi-directional assault. |
| Strengthened internal cohesion | 162 | Reabsorbs Musō after allowing his possessive longing for Kikyo to intensify, greatly strengthening the connections within the Myriad Demon Body. |
| Tessaiga-derived transformation | 168 171 | Obtains Tessaiga’s immense demon power and several accumulated abilities, including Wind Scar. His body and barrier improve through powers associated with Ryūkotsusei, the Flying Demon Moth, and Ōgamaru’s family. |
| Assimilated immortal poison | 191 | Uses a Weakening Period to assimilate the Medicine Elder Poison Immortal’s power extracted from Tessaiga, multiplying his miasma’s toxicity. |
| Spatial movement revealed | 192 | Demonstrates teleportation developed from the Flying Demon Moth and Tree of Ages powers absorbed through Tessaiga. |
| Underworld King Beast armor | 200 | Returns after roughly ten days with restored strength and dark-green armor capable of protecting him from Hell Dragon Break. |
Original-Timeline Reference
These stages describe the original story recalled by Li Xia, not confirmed advancements along the novel’s altered timeline 105 171 194.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Post–Mount Hakurei — six-star, top-tier great demon | 105 194 | Reconstructs himself under Mount Hakurei’s protection through repeated refinement and Shikon Jewel enhancement. |
| Six-and-a-half-star, demon king-level super great demon | 194 | Reabsorbs Onigumo’s heart, Moryomaru, and Red Child. |
| Complete Shikon Jewel absorption — beyond the preceding tiers | 166 194 | Reaches a level that Bakusaiga-wielding Sesshomaru and a fully developed Tessaiga cannot overcome together. Absorption also exposes him directly to the Jewel’s will. |
Background / History
Birth from Onigumo
Fifty years before the main conflict, Bandit Onigumo was thrown from a cliff and left severely injured. Kikyo rescued him and sheltered him in a cave outside Kaede’s Village, where she and her younger sister cared for him. Kikyo also recognized his exceptional potential and hoped he might become a powerful human practitioner 79 178.
Onigumo possessed maximum values in all Four Souls despite having no cultivation training. His refusal to die and obsessive desire to possess Kikyo attracted numerous lowly demons. They consumed his body and soul, merging around his soul as their connecting bond to create Naraku 79.
Betrayal of Kikyo and Inuyasha
Naraku exploited Kikyo and Inuyasha’s incomplete trust in one another. Disguised as Inuyasha, he mortally wounded Kikyo; disguised as Kikyo, he attacked and provoked Inuyasha into stealing the Shikon Jewel. Kikyo subsequently sealed Inuyasha rather than killing him 31 147.
Naraku later admits that he immediately wished on the stolen Jewel to obtain Kikyo. The wish failed: Kikyo died, and the Jewel disappeared with her. He spent the following fifty years searching for it, hoping to restore her and ultimately win both her body and her heart 235.
During his early growth, Naraku cursed the monk Mihō, beginning the affliction that would plague three generations of Miroku’s family. He also competed with Kaguya over a celestial maiden’s immortal body, then tried to exploit Mihō against his rival; Mihō instead sealed Kaguya in the Mirror of Life 79 83 163.
Appearance
- Usual guise: A handsome young castle lord, identified as wearing the face of the young lord Hiten 79 138.
- Early clothing: A Baboon Fur Robe, beneath which he has a muscular human-shaped body 73.
- Spider-shaped scar: Onigumo’s mark repeatedly appears on his back, even after changing bodies or cutting away the marked flesh 82.
- Myriad Demon Body: A mass of interwoven demons, flesh, tentacles, heads, and specialized limbs; its expanded form can reach dozens of meters in height 139 192 235.
- Assimilated features: Can manifest mantis blades, scorpion pincers, turtle-shell defenses, insect armor, and wings 138 139 190.
- Disguises: Has impersonated Kikyo, Inuyasha, and Kagome, and has also worn a brightly colored princess’s outfit 31 118 138 147.
Personality
Naraku is patient, calculating, and willing to exploit almost any weakness. He uses intermediaries, false information, hostages, and carefully timed attacks rather than accepting unfavorable direct confrontations. His concealment measures are elaborate enough that Sesshomaru repeatedly finds only decoys instead of his true body 92 99 103.
He also enjoys psychological cruelty. Through Tsubaki’s curse, he deliberately recreates Inuyasha’s earlier trauma by making Kagome aim an arrow at him near the Sacred Tree. He treats most incarnations as expendable, valuing Kanna for her utility while showing little concern for Kagura or Goshinki’s survival 91 97 98.
His obsession with Kikyo undermines his composure. He denies loving a human woman, yet becomes jealous of her closeness to Li Xia and increasingly determined to kill her to prove his independence from Onigumo. In their later confrontation, that determination overrides his usual instinct to retreat 146 148 206.
Li Xia’s interference makes him more dangerous rather than merely weaker. Repeated defeats push Naraku to abandon some of his arrogance, resume meticulous planning, and use Inuyasha’s companions as weapons against Li Xia and Kikyo 168 202.
Abilities & Skills
Myriad Demon Body and Assimilation
Naraku incorporates other demons into his composite body, acquiring their demon power, physical traits, and abilities 79 117 171.
- Cultivates fused monsters through his Venomous Insect Technique, then absorbs the strongest survivor 48 73 79.
- Reshapes his body into blades, pincers, armor, tentacles, and biting demon heads 138 192.
- Can abandon damaged or restrained body parts to escape 95 104.
- Later absorbs power from demon swords. Their comparatively “clean” demon power places little pressure on his soul, offering an alternative to consuming whole demons 164 166.
- His maximum Four Souls values give him unusually high potential for continued modification and growth 48 166.
Regeneration and Heart Separation
Naraku can reconstruct a body that has been torn apart, provided the mechanisms sustaining it remain intact 148 191.
- Onigumo’s human heart: Initially binds the constituent demons together and supports repeated reassembly 148.
- Akago / Red Child: His separated Demon Heart supplies demon power and extraordinary bodily vitality 148 202.
- Later independence: By the time of his Tessaiga-powered development, Naraku’s independent personality has secured enough control that discarding Onigumo no longer necessarily collapses his body 184.
- Physical resilience: With Akago protected outside his body and sufficient demon power available, even pulverizing his flesh does not reliably kill him 191.
- Limits: Purification, power-draining weapons, and sealed flesh prevent him from recovering as freely as ordinary physical damage allows 139 184 192.
Barriers and Spatial Movement
Naraku’s barriers develop from defensive shells into tools for concealment, movement, and counterattack 103 138 192 236.
- Blue barrier: Can imprison a powerful fusion creature, but cracks under Sesshomaru’s bite 73 91.
- Pink barrier: Stops the residual force of Li Xia’s advanced talismans and allied attacks 138.
- Concealment: Uses barriers and the Demon-Blocking Wall to hide his presence while decoys lead pursuers elsewhere 103 146.
- Teleportation: Develops spatial movement through powers obtained from Tessaiga 192.
- Reflection: Eventually absorbs and reflects a combined Backlash Wave at close range during his attempt to consume Sesshomaru 236.
- Limits: His intermediate advanced barrier initially has exceptional hardness without attack reflection; Hakushin’s sacred purification and appropriate barrier-breaking attacks can destroy his defenses 139 170 200.
Miasma and Poison
Naraku releases corrosive miasma that drains vitality and destroys flesh 91.
- Uses poisonous clouds to obstruct sight, shape the battlefield, and cover retreats 170 191.
- Assimilates immortal poison from Tessaiga, greatly increasing his miasma’s toxicity 191.
- The enhanced poison interferes with bodily recovery, leaving Kagura unable to heal normally after he wounds her 210.
- Counters Miroku’s Wind Tunnel with miasma and poisonous Saimyosho 201.
- Remains vulnerable to coordinated purification by Li Xia, Kikyo, and Kagome 201.
Incarnations, Puppets, and Surveillance
Naraku separates parts of himself into independently acting incarnations and operates Wooden Puppets remotely 91 99.
- Kanna: Provides surveillance through her mirror, soul manipulation, and support for battlefield schemes 139 148 236.
- Kagura: Supplies mobility, reconnaissance, hunting, and wind attacks, though her resentment makes her an unreliable subordinate 117 190.
- Saimyosho: Serve as scouts, guards, poisonous attackers, and protection against the Wind Tunnel 79 99 161 201.
- Wooden Puppets: Mislead trackers, carry his scent, and lure enemies into traps without exposing his main body 103 227.
- Moryomaru: Intended as a growing War Fortress that would attract attention while Naraku continued evolving in hiding 184 190.
Curses, Memory Manipulation, and Deception
Naraku attacks his enemies’ judgment and relationships as readily as their bodies 31 201.
- Originates the curse afflicting Mihō’s descendants, including Miroku 79 83.
- Alters and obscures Kohaku’s memories, using him as a potential weapon against Sango and her companions 183 188.
- Combines memory suppression with the Demon Power Magatama to make Miroku mistake Li Xia for Naraku 201.
- Creates counterfeit Shikon Shards from demon power and poisonous miasma as bait 117 162.
- Uses impersonation to exploit personal trust, including stealing Li Xia’s shard box while disguised as Kagome 138.
Tessaiga-Derived Combat
After obtaining Tessaiga’s power, Naraku becomes a more versatile direct combatant 168 171.
- Forms a large, Tessaiga-like cleaver from his own bones 168 236.
- Uses Wind Scar and later Backlash Wave 191 224.
- Gains stronger poison, bodily resilience, vitality, and barrier defenses through Tessaiga’s accumulated powers 171.
- Can supplement sword attacks with tentacles, flames, lightning, and volleys of solid spears 192 201.
Weakening Period
As an unusual half-demon, Naraku undergoes a monthly Weakening Period in which his body disassembles 99.
- Can choose when to enter the weakened state rather than being fixed to Inuyasha’s new-moon schedule 99.
- Uses disassembly to refine his body and assimilate difficult powers 79 191.
- Coordinates attacks and distractions to keep major enemies occupied while he is vulnerable 99.
- Manipulates the placement of successive monthly periods to maximize the interval between them 99.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Shikon Shards — His principal collection target and an aid to assimilation and bodily enhancement. Kikyo’s gift of nine fragments brings his holdings to fifty-seven at one point 82 118.
- Tessaiga — Captures the sword through a trap involving Princess Saro’s fusion and the Glass Curse, then obtains its accumulated demon power 164 168 177.
- Bone Blade — A weapon formed from his body rather than carried separately; channels Tessaiga-derived techniques 168 236.
- Demon-Blocking Wall — Conceals his demonic presence while he hides and recovers 146 162.
- Demon Power Magatama — Reinforces the false associations imposed on Miroku’s memories 201.
- Baboon Fur Robe — Worn during his early underground fusion-monster absorption 73.
Relationships
- Onigumo — Human origin and original binding soul. Naraku resents his lingering desires and rejects being treated as merely Onigumo under another name 79 82 146 184.
- Kikyo — Central obsession, enemy, and intended object of his Shikon Jewel wishes. His desire to possess her eventually becomes entangled with his determination to kill her 146 203 235.
- Inuyasha — Longstanding enemy whose distrust and impulsiveness Naraku repeatedly exploits, from the original betrayal to the Kaguya trap 31 177 227.
- Li Xia — Principal rival in the altered timeline. Repeated defeats force Naraku to change his methods, and he attempts to eliminate Li Xia through traps, stolen trust, and manipulated companions 104 117 138 201 202.
- Kagome — Threatened by Naraku because of her innate abilities and purification power; targeted through Tsubaki’s curse and impersonated during the shard theft 81 95 138.
- Miroku — Descendant of the monk Naraku cursed. Naraku later captures and brainwashes him into attacking Li Xia 83 201.
- Sango and Kohaku — Victims of his Demon Slayer Village plot. He manipulates Kohaku’s memories and plans to turn the siblings against each other 83 183 188.
- Sesshomaru — Enemy and coveted assimilation target. Naraku exploits Rin, Jaken, and Princess Saro in attempts to manipulate or absorb him 145 161 162 236.
- Kanna — Particularly valued incarnation because of her varied mirror abilities and possible usefulness against Kaguya 91.
- Kagura — Controlled and repeatedly endangered subordinate who secretly cooperates with Li Xia to gain freedom 117 202 210.
- Akago / Red Child — Separated Demon Heart and a critical source of his continued power and survival 148 191 202.
- Kaguya — Rival amalgamation who defeats him; Naraku subsequently redirects the pursuing Inuyasha into her territory 79 224 227.

- Draws Sesshomaru north and waits until Kagome returns to the Modern Era before baiting Inuyasha’s party with false shard information 163.
- Exploits Princess Saro’s spiritual power and a Glass Curse to bypass a direct confrontation with Tessaiga 177.
- Captures the group, obtains Tessaiga’s power, and attacks Hōsenki in the Demon Graveyard for his shards 168 177.
- Survives Li Xia’s pursuit while revealing increasingly varied abilities rather than reproducing his original Mount Hakurei development 170 171.

- Uses a scented Wooden Puppet to lure Inuyasha into Kaguya’s path, resulting in Inuyasha’s capture 227.
- Is shaken by the appearance of Kikyo’s living-seeming clone, believing the woman he killed has returned 231 235.
- Enters a prepared triple formation and is repeatedly scattered and purified. His attempt to absorb Sesshomaru through a reflected Backlash Wave fails when Tenseiga’s barrier intervenes 235 236.
- As his flesh is sealed away, destroys Princess Saro’s Demon Heart and laments that he still could not obtain Kikyo 237.
- Remains dangerous after death: his surviving resentment nearly affects Li Xia during purification and begins tainting the Shikon Jewel 240.
