Background / History
Human Companions and Flight
Impmon was among the first Digimon to reach the human world. His first human friends and companions were Xiao Ai and A Zhen, also named Ai and Mako in the chapter summaries. Their early time together was happy, but their possessiveness frightened him. After witnessing them tear apart a teddy bear during a quarrel, he imagined being torn apart himself and fled 6 21 42.
He subsequently wandered alone. Although he continued thinking about the children, the fear associated with their quarrel prevented him from returning. When Mo Yan brought up his former Tamers, Impmon denied being afraid and insisted that he had never needed them 6 42.
Zhuqiaomon later revealed that he had arranged Impmon’s entry into the Human World and planned a path for him. He considered Mo Yan’s decision to take Impmon as a student an interference with that plan and demanded compensation. Mo Yan handed over two of his Digicores 91.
Apprenticeship Under Mo Yan
After capturing Impmon and bringing him to the park, Mo Yan declared himself his mentor. He transformed into Wizardmon to establish his authority and promised to teach Impmon until he could evolve into that form and proficiently use magic. Impmon initially resisted, questioning why anyone would help him become stronger when he might later defeat them and absorb their data 6.
The apprenticeship began with physical conditioning rather than spells. Impmon endured ten-kilometer morning runs, repeated exercise sets, and instruction in grappling, armed combat, and other fighting techniques. Mo Yan explained that unstable bodies and minds could not safely handle magic’s advanced programming language 11.
Formal magic lessons focused on controlling his own power and data. Repeated failures caused explosions and mounting frustration, eventually provoking a rampage against Takato and Guilmon. After Guilmon froze him, Mo Yan freed and healed him; Impmon returned to practice without accusations and successfully learned to disperse his flame 15 16 18.
Mo Yan twice prevented premature evolution. He rejected Flame Wizardmon because excessive specialization in fire would limit Impmon’s future development, then later interrupted an evolution driven by demon lord power while refining and expanding Impmon’s foundational data 19 25.
Mo Yan also required Impmon to learn the Island Nation’s writing and some Digimon writing. This education later allowed him to read the message Xiao Ai and A Zhen left behind 153.
Confronting Dark Impmon
After gossiping about Mo Yan’s “old flame,” Impmon attempted to escape with improvised teleportation magic. Mo Yan linked the spell to his own and transported him into the chaotic interior of the Four Elements Crystal Ball 40 41 42.
There, Impmon encountered Dark Impmon, a copy Mo Yan had created from his data and buried memories. The copy forced him to confront his flight from Xiao Ai and A Zhen. Their battle also served Mo Yan’s experiments with his own magic and the Crystal Ball’s developing internal world 42.
Impmon ultimately chose to find the children and stop running from his fears. Rather than destroy Dark Impmon, he accepted him as part of himself. The copy dissolved into light and entered his body, followed by Evolution Light supplied by Mo Yan, completing his evolution into Wizardmon 43.
Independent Study
As Wizardmon, he openly addressed Mo Yan as his teacher and questioned him about evolution. Mo Yan explained that the original Wizardmon form provided a better starting point for Transfer Evolution into subspecies, clarifying why he had suppressed the earlier transformation 44.
Mo Yan later granted him access to the Knowledge Treasury on the condition that he contribute knowledge of his own. Encouraged to become a fellow traveler rather than a follower, Wizardmon resolved to continue studying and training while searching for Xiao Ai and A Zhen 46.
The access was provided through an authorization mark. Before receiving it, Wizardmon also learned from Mo Yan that possessing Twelve Digicores did not itself make a Digimon a god, and that accumulated data and encounters with other intelligent life could change or destabilize Digimon 45.
After leaving his teacher, Wizardmon used appearance-disguising magic learned under Mo Yan’s guidance to take the form of a handsome human boy. He continued studying while searching, and dealt with several Digimon that materialized in the Human World on his journey to Hongo 153.
Reunion with Xiao Ai and A Zhen
Wizardmon found a message and drawing left by Xiao Ai and A Zhen explaining that they had gone to their grandmother’s house in Hongo. He carefully preserved the note and followed it to find them 153.
Because the children knew his Impmon appearance better, he practiced compressing his data and reverted to his Rookie form before them. They welcomed him enthusiastically and apologized for their past behavior. A D-Ark appeared between the three, and Impmon solemnly accepted Xiao Ai and A Zhen as his Tamers, placing it on their stacked palms 153.
The reunion began what he regarded as the happiest period of his life. He taught the siblings to use Digimon Cards to support him in battle and training, allowing them to participate in his growth rather than remain merely observers 153.
Evolution into Baalmon and Human World Hunts
Imitating Mo Yan’s methods, Wizardmon began recording his accumulated knowledge and the data of defeated Digimon on paper talismans attached inside his cloak. This collection became his own database. Once it reached a sufficient threshold, he evolved into the Ultimate-level Baalmon 153.
The evolution granted him additional reading authority in Mo Yan’s database, still requiring him to exchange his own knowledge for access. Xiao Ai and A Zhen were delighted that their efforts had contributed to his advancement, deepening their bond 153.
When Takato Matsuki and the others invited him and his companions to visit the Digital World, Impmon declined. He wanted to remain with Xiao Ai and A Zhen, understood the dangers of the Digital World, and intended to eliminate destructive Digimon appearing in the Human World while the others were away. These hunts also supplied data for his growing database. His refusal partly expressed his irritation at receiving no messages from Mo Yan 153.
After the others returned, he greeted them and indirectly asked about his teacher, then intensified his hunts. The disaster associated with Abyssmon’s arrival provided further opportunities to defeat wild Digimon and collect data, until Grand Mage Beast appeared in Hongo 153.
MarineDevimon Battle and Reunion with Mo Yan
During an encounter with MarineDevimon in a secluded alley, Xiao Ai used Super Evolution Plug-In S to evolve Impmon into Wizardmon. He immediately attacked with Thunder Cloud Storm. When MarineDevimon struck back and threatened the children, Wizardmon protected them with Lightning Barrier before evolving into Baalmon 154.
Baalmon countered MarineDevimon’s poisonous ink with flame and wind talismans. Supported by Xiao Ai’s Enhancement Plug-In W, he sent lightning through the ink and destroyed MarineDevimon, then recorded the defeated Digimon’s data 154.
The figure applauding afterward was Mo Yan in the form of Grand Mage Beast. Baalmon complained that his teacher had forgotten him, then learned that the form before him was only an avatar. He introduced Xiao Ai and A Zhen as his Tamers 155.
Grand Mage Beast gave the siblings two handmade Digimon Cards, Ultimate Digivice and Digital King, and promised stronger cards in the future. Baalmon ignored his teacher’s teasing and led the group out of the alley, signaling for Grand Mage Beast to follow 155.
Appearance
- Impmon form: Dark purple skin and gloves; physical training gives him increasingly defined muscles 11 18 42.
- Magic manifestations: Produces eerie purple flames. Emerging demon lord power is accompanied by increasingly sinister flames and purple or dark-purple magic power 15 16 23.
- Wizardmon form: Retains his red scarf, worn around his upper arm after evolution 44.
- Dark Impmon distinction: His copy closely resembles him but has black skin rather than dark purple skin 42.
- Human disguise: Takes the appearance of a handsome young boy while searching for Xiao Ai and A Zhen 153.
- Talisman collection: As Wizardmon, attaches paper talismans containing his personal records inside his cloak. Baalmon’s cloak likewise houses talismans used for his knowledge-based techniques 153.
Personality
Impmon is proud, abrasive, and quick to conceal embarrassment or uncertainty with threats. He boasts that he will become the strongest Digimon, dismisses difficult lessons as easy, and initially refuses to acknowledge Mo Yan as his teacher. His reluctance to ask for help can turn a training obstacle into a reckless experiment 6 15 19.
His hostility toward Tamers is rooted in fear rather than indifference. Memories of Xiao Ai and A Zhen leave him visibly distressed, while questions about evolution’s purpose expose how uncertain he is about his own future 6 21 42.
Despite frequent complaints, he persistently completes Mo Yan’s assignments. The respect and ease he experiences with his mentor help him endure setbacks without giving up. Competition with Guilmon likewise intensifies his determination, even when Guilmon’s rapid growth briefly makes him feel useless 24 27.
His confrontation with Dark Impmon marks a shift from avoiding painful memories to accepting responsibility for his choices. This does not erase his brashness: immediately after embracing his darker self, he returns to insisting that he never goes back on his word 43.
Reuniting with Xiao Ai and A Zhen reveals his affectionate and protective side. Their apology moves him to tears, and he solemnly commits to their renewed partnership. He prioritizes staying with them over a dangerous journey to the Digital World, even though the children are somewhat disappointed by his refusal 153.
His independence does not eliminate his desire for his teacher’s attention. He resents Mo Yan’s prolonged silence, discreetly asks others about him, and complains when they finally meet again. At the same time, he follows Mo Yan’s scholarly example by building a database and exchanging knowledge 153 155.
Abilities & Skills
Dark Night Flame
Impmon’s principal attack produces purple fire from his hands or fingertips 15 16.
- Can launch individual fireballs, successive volleys, and enlarged projectiles 16 42.
- Learns to enlarge, sustain, disperse, and partially compress the flame through magic-power control 15 18 19.
- Early attempts at fine shaping fail; poor control during dispersal or compression causes explosions 15 16 19.
- SnowAgumon-enhanced blizzard attacks extinguish his flames and freeze him despite his awakened demon lord power 16.
Data Manipulation and Spell Creation
Mo Yan trains Impmon in magic’s underlying principles rather than teaching him a repertoire of fixed spells. This eventually allows him to construct magic according to his own needs 43.
- Dark Night Barrier: A defensive spell modeled on Mo Yan’s barriers; withstands Dark Impmon’s repeated fireball attacks 43.
- Control of self-originating data: Seizes the surrounding data originating from “Impmon,” depriving Dark Impmon of control over his magic and that data 43.
- Improvised teleportation: Reproduces spatial magic from observed digital characters. He can keep his data from being split between destinations, but cannot reliably determine where he will arrive 41.
- His teleportation remains vulnerable to interception by the more experienced Mo Yan 41.
- Appearance disguise: Learns magic under Mo Yan’s guidance that allows him to assume a human appearance for his search 153.
- Controlled reversion: Compresses his data to return from Wizardmon to Impmon, practicing the method when reuniting with his Tamers 153.
- Magical instruction: Renamon seeks advice from Wizardmon and learns a teleportation spell later used to move Justimon to Sakuyamon’s side. The instantaneous version requires Renamon’s Ultimate-level strength to cast fully 173.
Physical Combat and Enhancement
Impmon develops his fighting ability through intensive conditioning and repeated combat practice 11.
- Trains in grappling, armed combat, and close-range fighting 11.
- Flame Palm: Combines a fireball feint with a leaping, flame-infused palm strike against a dodging Mechanical Dummy 24.
- Learns automatic magic circulation that clears electricity-induced paralysis 23.
- Can stimulate his body with magic power for a dramatic physical boost, but his crude technique exhausts his reserves and destabilizes his bodily data 23 24.
Latent Demon Lord Power
A powerful dark force repeatedly awakens within Impmon, initially during frustration and later alongside his refusal to concede defeat 16 24 25.
- Makes his attacks increasingly simple and efficient while stimulating new data growth 25.
- Remains beyond his conscious control during the documented training period 25.
- Does not display a crest of gluttony. Mo Yan distinguishes the observed power from authority specifically marked by that sin 16.
- The Gluttony Demon Lord regards him as a potential “seed,” but abandons that interest after dealing with Mo Yan 25.
Wizardmon Lightning Magic
- Thunder Cloud Storm: Creates a rapidly expanding dark cloud that rains lightning bolts onto an enemy. He uses it immediately after evolving into Wizardmon against MarineDevimon 154.
- Lightning Barrier: Protects Xiao Ai and A Zhen when MarineDevimon threatens them 154.
Baalmon’s Talismans and Lightning
Baalmon’s abilities build on the knowledge stored in his talisman database. His species description presents extensive knowledge and recorded countermeasures as the basis of his defenses 153.
- Sin Talisman: Transforms talismans into various things for attacks 153.
- Elemental talismans: Uses flame and wind talismans to counter MarineDevimon’s poisonous ink 154.
- God Strike: Baalmon’s listed special move releases powerful lightning from his god-striking whip and is especially damaging to holy Digimon 153.
- Conductive lightning attack: Destroys MarineDevimon by sending lightning through his own ink, with support from Enhancement Plug-In W 154.
- Battle-data recording: Records defeated Digimon’s data to expand his database rather than relying solely on unstructured accumulation 153 154.
Scholarship and Knowledge Exchange
- Reads the Island Nation’s writing and some Digimon writing as a result of Mo Yan’s instruction 153.
- Builds a personal database by recording learned knowledge and defeated Digimon’s data on paper talismans 153.
- Gains broader access to Mo Yan’s database after evolving into Baalmon, while continuing to contribute knowledge in exchange 153.
- Has access to a book from Mo Yan containing functional spells ranging from cleaning magic to destructive forbidden spells. Access to a spell does not remove its strength requirements or establish that he can cast every spell in the collection 173.
Equipment / Items
- Red scarf — Retained after evolution and worn around Wizardmon’s upper arm 44.
- A Detailed Introduction to Wizardry — Introductory text covering the interaction between data and magic power; completed before his formal magic-control lessons 15.

- Ultimate Digivice and Digital King cards — Handmade cards Mo Yan gives to Xiao Ai and A Zhen. Ultimate Digivice enhances a Digimon’s strength; Digital King maximizes a special move’s power but carries a risk of injury 155.
Relationships
- Mo Yan — Mentor who imposes a demanding apprenticeship, repeatedly heals him, and delays his evolution to preserve stronger future options. Impmon eventually recognizes him as his teacher and accepts the goal of becoming an independent fellow traveler. He later imitates Mo Yan’s database-building methods, exchanges knowledge with him, and complains about his lack of contact before reuniting with his Grand Mage Beast avatar 6 19 27 44 46 153 155.
- Xiao Ai / Ai and A Zhen / Mako — Former Tamers and first human companions. Their quarrel frightened him into leaving; after facing Dark Impmon, he resolves to find them. He reunites with them in Hongo, accepts their apology, and formally renews their partnership when a D-Ark appears. Their card support contributes to his development into Baalmon, and he chooses to remain with them rather than accompany the others to the Digital World 21 42 43 46 153 154.
- Guilmon — Fellow trainee and competitive foil. Guilmon freezes him during his rampage, competes with him during running practice, and unintentionally embarrasses him with candid observations 16 23 24.
- Takato Matsuki — Intervenes when Impmon attacks him and Guilmon, using a SnowAgumon card to stop the rampage. Later invites Impmon and his companions to the Digital World with the others, but Impmon declines 16 153.
- Dark Impmon — Artificial counterpart formed from copied data and suppressed fears. Impmon ultimately embraces and absorbs him rather than rejecting that part of himself 42 43.
- Gluttony Demon Lord — Takes an interest in Impmon as a seed for demon lord power, then relinquishes that interest 25.
- Zhuqiaomon — Arranged Impmon’s entry into the Human World and intended a particular path for him. Demands compensation after Mo Yan’s mentorship disrupts that arrangement 91.
- Renamon — Seeks magical advice from Wizardmon and learns a teleportation spell later used during the battle against Nidhogg 173.
- MarineDevimon — Opponent who threatens Xiao Ai and A Zhen. Impmon fights him as Wizardmon and Baalmon, destroys him with lightning, and records his data 154.

Trivia
- After reading about Lucemon defeating Mega Digimon while still a Rookie and later becoming the Angel God, Impmon becomes a fan and declares that he will accomplish the same. Mo Yan responds with mockery and criticism 27.
- Mo Yan invokes the Wizard’s Code of Daily Conduct, Revised Edition 3.0, compiled in Witchelny, when declaring himself Impmon’s mentor 6.
- His literacy is explicitly contrasted with the original story’s illiterate Impmon. Mo Yan considers illiteracy embarrassing for beings made from data and therefore insists on teaching him 153.
- Baalmon’s species description calls him the “Noble King” among Demon Man-type Digimon and reports a rumor that he is another form of a Demon Lord-type Digimon. It also describes Yabin’s Red Book as exchanging knowledge for souls; the supplied account does not depict Impmon personally performing that exchange 153.
