The initial documented evolution stages belong to Guilmon, Takato’s partner, rather than Takato himself. Later developments include their shared Gallantmon fusion and Takato’s acquisition of his own DigiSoul 97 163.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Guilmon — Rookie | 3 4 | Fights Mo Yan alongside Terriermon and Renamon; Takato strengthens him with Enhancement Plug-In W. |
| Growlmon — Champion | 11 | First shown already evolved; the triggering event is not provided. Takato seeks help reversing the evolution because Growlmon’s size could frighten people. |
| Guilmon — reversion to Rookie | 14 | Defeat in the Proof of the Dragon duel removes part of Growlmon’s Champion data. His core data becomes more stable, raising his potential upper limit but making subsequent evolution harder. |
| Growlmon — return to Champion | 37 | Evolves again to confront TigerVespamon. Takato supplies White Wings so he can reach the rooftop battlefield. |
| Great Growlmon — Ultimate | 37 38 | Takato and Guilmon achieve intense mental and bodily synchronization under pressure. Calumon’s Evolution Light triggers Matrix Evolution, unlocking Great Growlmon’s cyborg form and Atomic Blaster. |
| Growlmon — strengthened Champion form | 50 | Further development of Wicked Demon Dragon data and power gained from the digital crisis allow him to sense traces of an unidentified Digimon’s presence after Spacetime Stasis ends. |
| Great Growlmon — enhanced transmission of heart power | 66 67 | Takato’s shouting conveys his faith, will, and strength to Great Growlmon. Mythological Data obtained from the Devas helps Great Growlmon receive this power and break Vajramon’s restraining jewel. |
| Examon — dark evolution | 94 95 97 | Takato’s rage over Leomon’s death, Devimon’s mind-influencing darkness, and Guilmon’s Wicked Demon Dragon data trigger a destructive evolution. The D-Ark converts Takato’s spiritual power and draws on Calumon’s Evolution Light. Despite losing reason, Examon continues obeying Takato’s commands. |
| Gallantmon — Matrix Evolution through human–Digimon fusion | 97 98 | Shared memories begin restoring the demon dragon’s reason. Yggdrasill’s power intervenes, and Takato and Guilmon fuse into Gallantmon, wielding the holy lance Gram and Royal Saber. |
| Gallantmon — initial DigiSoul conversion activation | 149 | Takato’s anger at Juri’s tears activates Mo Yan’s hidden DigiSoul conversion program, producing blazing, light-like data fluctuations around Gallantmon. |
| Takato — individual DigiSoul awakened | 163 164 | Grand Mage Beast supplies DigiSoul, which Takato makes uniquely his own. He absorbs the Megidramon manifestation in his mental space as data and Spiritual Power, acquiring a golden-red, flame-like DigiSoul. |
| Megidramon — controlled demon-dragon evolution | 164 | Great Growlmon evolves after Takato assimilates the internal manifestation. Takato remains lucid, states that neither partner will lose control again, and approaches as Megidramon lowers his head. |
| Gallantmon — more harmonious fusion | 166 | After Takato’s DigiSoul breakthrough, their renewed Gallantmon fusion appears more natural and harmonious than before. Takato communicates mentally with the other children. |
| Gallantmon — DigiSoul-supported Internet Evolution | 182 | Takato and Guilmon fuse within golden-red light to search for Mo Yan and recover Wormmon’s data. The transformation is explicitly announced as Internet Evolution. |
| Forced fusion cancellation and partner devolution | 184 | Mo Yan’s pillars of light separate the children from their partners despite their DigiSoul resistance. Guilmon and the other partners are reduced to In-Training forms and sent away. |
The destructive dragon manifested in the temple battle is called Examon in those chapters. Later chapters refer to the dangerous demon-dragon evolution and its internal manifestation as Megidramon 94 95 97 162 163 164.
Background / History
Takato created Guilmon, but gradually learns to distinguish being his creator from controlling his wishes. Mo Yan explains that the Digital World chose children who loved and believed in Digimon, provided them with D-Arks, and paired them with partners in preparation for possible disasters 4 8 13.
Later revelations establish that Guilmon’s creation also involved Qinglongmon and Yggdrasill. Qinglongmon used part of the Wicked Demon Dragon’s core data together with Takato’s designs. He subsequently explains that he and Yggdrasill jointly chose Takato because of a quality that allows him to resonate with the Royal Knights. Guilmon originated from core data obtained from Examon, while Gallantmon’s core data was hidden in Takato’s D-Ark and gradually transmitted to both partners through their battles 97 99.
Takato continues attending school while caring for Guilmon. He brings food to the park and asks Mo Yan to supervise his partner when classes or the need to return home prevent him from staying 10 17 22.
After traveling to the Digital World, Takato returns home and introduces Guilmon to his parents. They readily accept Guilmon and do not ground Takato, unlike the restrictions imposed on some of his friends. He later visits Okinawa at his younger cousin’s invitation, following his parents’ instructions to pay respects at the family graves 144 160.
During the DigiDeath crisis, Takato and the other children join Yamaki Mitsuo’s base, assist with collecting samples, and train alongside their partners. Their continued partnership is ultimately interrupted when Mo Yan forcibly separates their fusions and sends the Digimon away 170 184.
Personality
Takato is affectionate, compassionate, and openly emotional. He objects to making an injured Renamon continue fighting and cries while embracing Guilmon after Mo Yan defeats him—even receiving an electric shock from Guilmon’s lingering paralysis. His curiosity is equally direct: he openly asks about Mo Yan’s changing forms and tries to touch the displayed DigiCores 4 5 7.
His concern can become overprotective. He initially tries to stop Guilmon from volunteering for training and struggles to watch Growlmon fight independently. Nevertheless, he recognizes that his partner has a will of his own and deserves to be treated as a friend rather than merely something he created 13 17.
Takato becomes more decisive as he understands the danger facing the human world. He actively confronts disruptive Digimon and heads toward a suspected Ultimate-level threat despite uncertainty about whether he can prevent the eventual catastrophe. His optimism also keeps him practical: after Sandiramon’s defeat, he urges the group to leave the tunnel before dwelling on unanswered questions 16 27 50.
His kindness coexists with an increasingly fierce capacity for anger. After meeting Mo Yan, he begins actively hunting Digimon that cause destruction in the Human World. Makuramon’s abduction of Calumon exposes a savage hostility that worries Rika, although Takato suppresses it and returns to his usual sunny demeanor. Leomon’s death, compounded by Devimon’s darkness, later pushes him into explicit murderous rage and drives Guilmon’s dark evolution 70 94.
Takato’s resolve can develop beyond retaliation. During Gallantmon’s prolonged battle against Mo Yan’s forms, he and Guilmon move from fighting for revenge toward fighting for justice. He also puts Mo Yan’s combat lessons into practice: when the D-Ark cannot identify the D-Reaper, he withdraws to gather his allies rather than attacking an unknown enemy alone 107 159.
He dislikes studying, but remains fascinated by the Digital World’s workings. Sassumusmon challenges him to consider questions about Guilmon’s birth, evolution, cards, and the D-Ark rather than dismissing learning as unenjoyable 114.
His attachment to partners includes a strong concern for their individual identity. He refuses to accept Wormmon’s rebirth as a Digi-Egg as a sufficient answer if the loss of data might erase Wormmon’s memories and personality. However, when Mo Yan frames that data as belonging to Wormmon’s original owner, Takato struggles to reconcile loyalty to his friend with his own sense of justice 182 183.
Abilities & Skills
Digi-Modify / Card Slash
Takato uses Digimon Cards through his D-Ark to alter Guilmon’s combat capabilities. Repeated battles make him increasingly proficient at choosing and applying cards 4 16.
- Enhancement Plug-In W: Strengthens Guilmon during a coordinated attack intended to interrupt Mo Yan’s special move 4.
- White Wings: Gives Growlmon six white wings for flight. During the dragon duel, Takato obtains Mo Yan’s permission before intervening 12.
- SnowAgumon: Grants Guilmon a blizzard attack that extinguishes Impmon’s purple flames and encases him in ice, demonstrating that cards can supply powers opposite to a partner’s normal attribute 16.
- Energy Explosion: Channels a powerful surge into Growlmon before his Demon Dragon Flame attack against Sandiramon. The card was entrusted to Takato by Hirokazu Shiota 50.
- Limit: Wizard Mo Yan’s Land of No Dust can dispel card boosts and suppress the partners’ evolution 40 41.
Emotional Synchronization
Takato can experience Growlmon’s feelings in real time, including his enjoyment of battle and determination to continue despite injuries. His emotional resolve can also contribute power toward evolution 13.
- Synchronization with Guilmon reaches an exceptional level during the TigerVespamon battle, preceding Matrix Evolution into Great Growlmon 37.
- Calumon’s Evolution Light is an explicit catalyst for that breakthrough 37 38.
- Mo Yan uses his Angel DigiCore to prevent evolution during the dragon duel, then casts Dimensional Partition to delay Takato’s heart power from reaching Growlmon 13.
- During the Vajramon battle, Takato’s shouts transmit his will and strength to Great Growlmon. His example prompts Rika and Li Jianliang to channel their feelings similarly 66 67.
- Takato’s unusually powerful Spiritual Power, converted by the D-Ark, draws the attention of the holy Digimon and helps inspire their interest in emotional powers associated with the Eight Virtues 82.
- Their synchronization also transmits negative emotions. Devimon’s darkness, Takato’s rage, and Guilmon’s demon-dragon data reinforce one another during the temple battle 94.
- The bond remains strong enough that the frenzied Examon obeys Takato’s commands. Their Spiritual Power, Darkness Power, and dragon power intertwine into protection that Holy Angemon Priest Mode cannot initially penetrate 97.
Fusion Evolution / Gallantmon
Takato and Guilmon can combine into Gallantmon rather than merely evolving Guilmon independently. Their first successful fusion follows a resonance of shared memories and the intervention of Yggdrasill’s power. Mo Yan’s underlying DigiSoul research supplies a conversion program that enables the children’s flesh to become data during fusion 97 149.
- Royal Knight resonance: Takato was selected for a quality that lets him resonate with the Royal Knights. Gallantmon’s core data was gradually supplied to him and Guilmon through the D-Ark 99.
- Gallantmon’s nature: Their Gallantmon shares the core essence of the Royal Knights’ Gallantmon, but lacks that knight’s accumulated experience and Yggdrasill-bestowed Authority Power 98.
- Holy lance Gram / Royal Saber: Gallantmon uses Gram to intercept Devimon’s sword-light attacks and deliver powerful close-range strikes 98.
- Flight: Gallantmon flies in pursuit of Mo Yan and searches Okinawa for the former Digital Space 182 183.
- Mental communication: After the later, more harmonious fusion, Takato speaks directly into his companions’ minds while instructing them to withdraw 166.
- Limitations: DigiDeath’s data fluctuation can undo the fusion. Mo Yan can also forcibly separate the partners despite their attempts to maintain the transformation with DigiSoul 175 184.
DigiSoul
Mo Yan initially implants a hidden DigiSoul conversion program in the children and their partners to support human–Digimon fusion. Takato activates it during the Abyssmon crisis when Juri’s tears provoke a surge of anger, causing blazing data fluctuations to appear around Gallantmon 149.
Grand Mage Beast later directly passes DigiSoul to Takato during a renewed demon-dragon crisis. Within Takato’s mental space, he explains that a chibi Megidramon embodies some of Guilmon’s hidden data combined with Takato’s Spiritual Power. Destroying it would prevent that dangerous evolution but would also make Gallantmon fusion harder, because the manifestation is part of both partners 163.
Takato instead chooses to assimilate it. He presses the supplied DigiSoul into his chest, develops a DigiSoul uniquely his own, and absorbs the manifestation as data and Spiritual Power. His external aura becomes golden-red and flame-like; it does not burn his companions and is described as benefiting them 163 164.
- Control of demon-dragon power: Takato remains lucid when Great Growlmon becomes Megidramon and states that the new power will prevent him and Guilmon from losing themselves again 164.
- Improved fusion harmony: Their subsequent Gallantmon appears more natural and harmonious than their previous fusion 166.
- Continued activation: DigiSoul rises from Takato as he resolves to recover Wormmon’s data, preceding another golden-red fusion into Gallantmon 182.
- Limit: DigiSoul does not allow the children to resist Mo Yan’s final forced cancellation of their fusions 184.
D-Ark Scanning and Protection
- Reads identification data for Digimon, including Mo Yan’s Wizardmon and Knightmon forms 7 22.
- Provides protection during Spacetime Stasis, but does not let Takato identify the interruption or discover Mo Yan’s hidden visit 50.
- Converts Takato’s Spiritual Power into strength and evolution power for Guilmon. During the dark evolution at Zhuqiaomon’s temple, it also draws upon Calumon’s Evolution Light from beneath the Four Divine Temples 82 94.
- Contains concealed Gallantmon core data supplied by Yggdrasill through Qinglongmon 99.
- Holds absorbed data that Takato can transfer to Sassumusmon for reconstructing damaged ground 114.
- Can open passages through some Digital Battle Arena fog barriers, but fails against the wall-like fog surrounding Mo Yan’s later battle with D-Reaper 182.
- Does not identify the D-Reaper when Takato first examines the substance covering the Twin Towers 159.
Combat Judgment
Takato applies Mo Yan’s principle of acting swiftly, preparing precisely, and attacking ruthlessly. He assembles his companions before engaging the unidentified D-Reaper and immediately has Growlmon evolve into Great Growlmon when Searchers direct Bubbler fire toward the children. Great Growlmon’s Plasma Blade then intercepts the incoming energy shots 159 160.
Equipment / Items
- Red D-Ark — Used to scan Digimon and channel card power to Guilmon. Its appearance later changes, and it also serves as a conduit for Spiritual Power, concealed core data, and stored data transfers 7 11 50 94 99 114.
- Digimon Cards — Provide temporary enhancements, additional abilities, and combat support 4 12 16 50.
- Goggles — Takato pulls them down before setting off toward the Twin Towers and again before initiating the first attack against the D-Reaper 27 160.
- Wristwatch — Helps him keep track of school and the need to return home 10 22.
- Holy lance Gram — Wielded while fused with Guilmon as Gallantmon; used for Royal Saber and close combat 98.
- Restoration Program Bomb — A mission-specific device carried toward DigiDeath by Gallantmon and Saidakoumon. Its detonation implants the Restoration Program despite DigiDeath’s counterattack 175.
Relationships
- Guilmon — Created Digimon, partner, and close friend. Guilmon wants to grow stronger to protect Takato and values staying with him more than evolution itself. Their bond eventually permits fusion into Gallantmon, while Takato’s DigiSoul lets him assimilate their shared dangerous demon-dragon manifestation. They are forcibly separated when Guilmon is sent away in an In-Training form 13 14 17 97 163 164 184.
- Mo Yan — Initially an opponent, later a source of guidance and a trusted caretaker for Guilmon. Takato questions his dangerous training methods but eventually entrusts Guilmon to him. Mo Yan also secretly engineers trials through his other forms, including the temple confrontation that drives Takato’s dark evolution. As Grand Mage Beast, he gives Takato the DigiSoul needed to regain control. Their relationship becomes strained when Takato seeks Wormmon’s data and opposes the announced separation of humans and Digimon 5 10 17 92 94 163 183 184.
- Li Jianliang — Fellow Tamer and combat ally. They coordinate card-supported attacks against Mo Yan and later pursue Sandiramon together. Li Jianliang tries to stop Takato’s renewed demon-dragon crisis and later questions his pursuit of Wormmon’s lost data, but falls silent when Takato insists on preserving their friend’s identity 4 50 162 182.
- Rika Makino — Fellow Tamer whose willingness to keep an injured partner fighting initially troubles Takato. They nevertheless cooperate against Mo Yan and Sandiramon. She becomes concerned by Takato’s growing malice, tries to rouse him during the later Megidramon crisis, and helps him arrange to escort Juri home 4 5 50 70 144 162.
- Impmon — An abrasive acquaintance whom Takato questions about his training and loss of control. Takato stops his rampage by having Guilmon freeze him 6 16 17.
- Calumon — His Evolution Light responds to Takato’s intense desire during the TigerVespamon battle and enables Great Growlmon’s emergence. Takato insists that Calumon is a friend rather than an object, attempts to stop Makuramon’s abduction, and urges the others to travel to the Digital World for a rescue 37 69 70.
- Hirokazu Shiota — Entrusts Takato with the Energy Explosion card used against Sandiramon. Takato is delighted to reunite with him during the first D-Reaper battle after Hirokazu’s grounding limits their time together 50 160.
- Alice McCoy — Fellow Tamer introduced after the Vajramon battle. As Gallantmon and BloomLordmon, they fight side by side against Mo Yan’s forms. Takato and Guilmon promise to help recover Dobermon’s data, and Takato later pursues Wormmon’s lost data rather than accepting a rebirth that might erase his memories 70 107 114 182.
- Wormmon — Alice’s partner and a friend whose individual memories and personality Takato wants to preserve. Takato rejects abandoning his lost data and searches for Mo Yan in hopes of recovering it 182 183.
- Juri Katou — A girl Takato secretly loves. He offers to escort her home after their return from the Digital World, and they chat and laugh together along the way. Her tears later provoke the anger that activates his hidden DigiSoul conversion program. Juri, fused with Leomon as ApolloMon, subsequently fights alongside Gallantmon against Abyssmon 144 149 150.
- Leomon — A gentle Digimon whose death at New Species Devimon’s hands devastates Takato and triggers his demand for revenge. Takato later becomes curious about Leomon’s return and is pleasantly surprised when Juri fuses with him as ApolloMon 94 144 150.
- Qinglongmon and Yggdrasill — Jointly select Takato because he can resonate with the Royal Knights. They arrange Guilmon’s core-data origins and the gradual delivery of Gallantmon’s data, while Yggdrasill directly intervenes in Takato and Guilmon’s first Gallantmon evolution 97 99.
- Parents and younger cousin — His parents’ expectations initially shape when he must leave Guilmon and return home. They later welcome Guilmon without grounding Takato. His younger cousin invites him to Okinawa, where he pays respects at the family graves and becomes involved in the Mephistomon crisis 10 17 144 150 160.
- Yamaki Mitsuo — Invites Takato and his companions to the base established to investigate and counter DigiDeath. Takato joins after saying goodbye to his parents 170.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Mo Yan’s Trial and Explanations
Takato and Li Jianliang join the confrontation after Renamon is overpowered. Their coordinated attacks force Mo Yan to respond, but his Flame Angemon form defeats all three partners. Their concern for the injured Digimon earns his recognition, and he heals them before agreeing to talk 3 4 5.
Mo Yan subsequently explains Digimon’s data-based nature, the damaged barrier between worlds, and the children’s selection as DigiDestined. Takato initially worries that Guilmon being made of data diminishes what he is; Guilmon and Mo Yan reassure him. By the end of these discussions, Takato is willing to trust Mo Yan with Guilmon’s care 7 8 9 10.
The Dragon Duel and Guilmon’s Training
Seeking to return the oversized Growlmon to Guilmon, Takato accepts Mo Yan’s proposed dragon battle. He supports Growlmon with White Wings but must also confront his partner’s independent desire to fight. Growlmon loses and reverts, yet Guilmon emerges feeling well and reassures Takato that remaining together matters more than evolving 11 12 13 14.
Later, Takato stops Impmon’s rampage with the SnowAgumon card. Although the incident makes him wary of Mo Yan’s training, he ultimately accepts Guilmon’s request to train with Dracomon and leaves him in Mo Yan’s care 16 17.
Twin Towers and Matrix Evolution
Takato and Guilmon investigate the pillar of light at the Twin Towers after learning that an Ultimate Digimon may be approaching. During the confrontation with TigerVespamon, their synchronization and Calumon’s intervention produce Great Growlmon 27 35 37.
Great Growlmon fires Atomic Blaster at TigerVespamon. Unknown to the children, Wizard Mo Yan uses the attack to help reshape chrono digi-alloy into his Flame Sword. Shortly afterward, his Land of No Dust leaves Takato and the other Tamers unable to maintain card boosts or evolve their partners 38 40 41.
Sandiramon Encounter
Takato and Li Jianliang join Rika in pursuing Sandiramon through an underground tunnel. Mo Yan secretly interrupts the battle with Spacetime Stasis, but the children cannot identify what happened 49 50.
Takato uses Hirokazu’s Energy Explosion card to strengthen Growlmon for the group’s combined attack. After Sandiramon warns them about the twelve Deva and disperses into data absorbed by their partners, Takato directs everyone toward the emergency exit. The group intends to ask Mo Yan about the Deva 50.
Vajramon and Calumon’s Abduction
During the battle against Vajramon, Takato runs to the pinned Great Growlmon and shouts to convey his strength. His simple faith reaches his partner through their bond, and Great Growlmon uses the Mythological Data within him to receive that strength and destroy the jewel holding him down. Rika and Li Jianliang follow Takato’s example 66 67.
After Vajramon’s defeat, Makuramon snatches Calumon from Juri’s arms. Takato insists that Calumon is their friend and charges forward to take Calumon back, but Makuramon evades him. Leomon attempts an interception and is struck down when Zhuqiaomon appears in the rift 69.
Makuramon’s departure exposes the malice accumulating within Takato, alarming Rika. Takato suppresses it and proposes that they go to the Digital World to rescue Calumon. Alice introduces herself to the group and asks about their intended journey 70.
Zhuqiaomon’s Temple and Gallantmon’s Birth
At the Zhuque Gate, Mo Yan’s Devimon form ambushes the children to delay their meeting with Zhuqiaomon. When Rapidmon struggles, Takato calls for Guilmon. A descending pillar of light brings Growlmon and the other separated companions to the battlefield, where several partners evolve to Ultimate 92 93.
New Species Devimon kills Leomon, swallows his data, and taunts the children while secretly releasing darkness that influences the mind. Takato’s grief turns into murderous rage. He channels a tremendous surge of Spiritual Power through the D-Ark, while Calumon’s Evolution Light and Guilmon’s hidden Wicked Demon Dragon data contribute to Great Growlmon’s evolution into Examon 94.
The destructive dragon fights without reason but still follows Takato’s commands. After Devimon Triple-Stacked Form severely wounds him with Dark Matter Explosion, Takato approaches in tears and self-reproach. Their happy memories begin restoring Guilmon’s reason. Holy Angemon Priest Mode attempts to guide the process, but Yggdrasill’s power expels his influence, and Takato and Guilmon complete Matrix Evolution into Gallantmon 95 97.
Gallantmon battles Devimon Triple-Stacked Form with Gram and Royal Saber. Knightmon Legendary Mode’s participation eventually leaves Gallantmon badly injured, until Alice and Wormmon’s BloomLordmon fusion heals him with Sunshine. The partners recognize their friends and continue as a two-on-two battle, their motives shifting from revenge toward justice 98 107.
Afterward, Takato and Alice give Sassumusmon absorbed data from their D-Arks to repair the damaged ground. Takato and Guilmon promise to help Alice recover Dobermon’s data. Learning that their friends are approaching Zhuqiaomon, they hurry to the shrine 114.
The Four Holy Beasts and Homecoming
The children’s attempt to reason with Zhuqiaomon leads to another overwhelming confrontation. LoaderLeomon protects them and carries them out of the shrine. When Qinglongmon arrives and clashes with Zhuqiaomon, Takato again fuses with Guilmon as Gallantmon, intending to join the battle rather than endure its destructive shock waves helplessly 144.
The children later return to the Human World aboard the Ark. Takato introduces Guilmon to his parents, then volunteers to escort Juri home after Rika explains her circumstances. He and Juri chat comfortably, while Guilmon and Coronamon accompany them. As Digimon activity in the Human World increases, Takato resumes responding to incidents before leaving for Okinawa 144.
Okinawa and the Abyssmon Battle
In Okinawa, Takato becomes involved with Minami Uehara and the laptop containing the Vaccine Program against Mephistomon’s scheme. Archelomon and Gizamon attack them at the seashore. Wind Lionmon emerges to protect Minami, and Guilmon defeats Archelomon, but MantaRaymon abducts Minami and her laptop 145.
During the later confrontation, Takato’s fury at seeing Juri cry activates Mo Yan’s concealed DigiSoul conversion program within Gallantmon. Juri then reveals her own fusion with Leomon as ApolloMon and declares that she will fight alongside him. Gallantmon, ApolloMon, and Saidakoumon cooperate to defeat Abyssmon with combined attacks 149 150.
After Mo Yan collects Abyssmon’s core data, the children undo their fusions. He opens a doorway back to the Human World, allowing them to reunite with the Uehara family and Takato’s cousin 150.
D-Reaper and Takato’s DigiSoul
When the D-Reaper appears around the Twin Towers, Takato initially wants to confront it immediately. The unidentified flesh-like mass and the D-Ark’s failure to provide information instead prompt him to contact his allies and prepare a coordinated attack. During their first engagement, Growlmon’s flames draw out Bubblers, and Searchers direct their fire toward the children. Takato evolves Growlmon into Great Growlmon to intercept the barrage 159 160.
The renewed activation of Megidramon’s power consumes Takato’s awareness in anger. Rika, Li Jianliang, Juri, Hirokazu, and Kenta try unsuccessfully to rouse him while Great Growlmon remains suspended in an incomplete evolution 162.
Grand Mage Beast intervenes and enters Takato’s mental space. Rather than destroying the chibi Megidramon manifestation and damaging the basis of Gallantmon fusion, Takato chooses to absorb it using DigiSoul. He awakens his own golden-red power, regains consciousness, and reassures his friends that he and Guilmon will remain in control. Megidramon lowers his head to meet Takato, and their contact produces a brilliant light 163 164.
Gallantmon subsequently reappears in a more harmonious form, and Takato mentally tells his companions to retreat while he and Guilmon confront the enemy. Three days after the first battle, the children join Yamaki’s base, help collect DigiDeath data and tissue samples, and resume training after Grand Mage Beast empowers the group 166 170.
During a later operation, Gallantmon and Saidakoumon approach DigiDeath with the Restoration Program Bomb. DigiDeath’s counterattack breaks their fusions, but the bomb detonates inside it and installs the program. Mo Yan rescues the falling children and partners. Wormmon then dissolves, and his data combines with Dobermon’s to form a Digi-Egg for Alice 175.
Wormmon’s Data and Forced Separation
Takato attempts to enter the fog-covered Digital Battle Arena to recover Wormmon’s data. Neither physical force nor the D-Ark opens a passage. He proposes fusing into Gallantmon to break through, but the fog disappears before he can act 182.
Li Jianliang suggests that Wormmon can begin again as a Digi-Egg. Takato rejects relying on rebirth if the data loss might erase the memories and personality of the friend they know. Guilmon takes his hand, and they fuse into Gallantmon through Internet Evolution. Reasoning that the sealed passages mean Mo Yan and D-Reaper must still be in the Human World, they fly off to search 182.
Takato first investigates the submerged Okinawa Experimental Base, remembering Mephistomon’s former Digital Space, but finds no trace of it. Mo Yan tells him that he cannot prevent Wormmon’s original owner from reclaiming the data. This leaves Takato torn between protecting his friend and respecting the justice and morality he believes in 183.
Mo Yan then announces that the Four Holy Beasts have ordered all Digimon to return to the Digital World before the worlds are sealed apart. Takato argues that humans and Digimon can live together, citing his friends and their partners. Nevertheless, the subsequent pillars of light forcibly cancel the children’s fusions. Their DigiSoul cannot maintain the transformations, and Mo Yan reduces the partners to In-Training forms as the price of their resistance. Takato and the others can only watch their partners rise into the sky and disappear, then kneel and weep 183 184.
