Background / History

Creation and first encounter with Mo Yan

Takato created Guilmon, but Guilmon develops emotions and a will of his own. During the confrontation with Mo Yan, Takato recognizes that his partner genuinely wants to fight and evolve rather than merely follow human instructions 4.

Later revelations clarify that Takato supplied Guilmon’s designs, while Qinglongmon brought him into being using part of the Wicked Demon Dragon’s core data. Qinglongmon explains that he and Yggdrasill persuaded Examon to provide that data. Yggdrasill also supplied Gallantmon core data, which Qinglongmon concealed in Takato’s D-Ark and gradually fed into Takato and Guilmon through their battles 97 99.

Guilmon joins Renamon and Terriermon in attacking Mo Yan, helping interrupt an attack by targeting his wings. After transforming into Flame Angemon, Mo Yan blocks their attacks and paralyzes Guilmon with Redemption Thunder Punishment. He then heals the Digimon and their Tamers, recognizing their teamwork and concern for one another 4 5.

Guilmon leads Mo Yan to the small house in the park where they wait for the children. As Mo Yan explains Digimon’s data-based nature and the dangers facing both worlds, Guilmon reassures Takato. Their bond is subsequently deepened by Mo Yan’s sacred light 6 7 9.

The Dragon Battle

After Guilmon becomes Growlmon, Takato asks Mo Yan to restore his smaller form because Growlmon’s enormous size could cause panic in the human world. Mo Yan agrees and arranges a Dragon Battle against his Coredramon form inside a separate domain 11.

Growlmon’s instincts recognize the manifested Proof of the Dragon as a counterfeit, but he accepts the fight anyway. Takato supplies White Wings only after obtaining the opposing combatant’s permission. Mo Yan later prevents Takato from triggering another evolution, forcing Growlmon to fight independently 12 13.

Growlmon loses the final exchange of breath attacks. Some of his Champion-level data passes to Mo Yan, and he devolves into Guilmon. Despite learning that his stabilized data will make evolution harder, Guilmon says remaining with Takato matters more to him than evolving 13 14.

Training under Mo Yan

After returning from a battle, Guilmon and Takato encounter an out-of-control Impmon. Guilmon counters his flames, then uses power granted by a SnowAgumon card to extinguish them and freeze him 16.

Guilmon asks Mo Yan to train him so he can protect Takato better. Mo Yan pairs him with a Dracomon released from his DigiCore and creates the Wild Jungle, a hunting exercise with a time limit and electric shocks for failure. Guilmon awakens his predatory instincts, and the contest ends without a winner 17 18 20.

Mo Yan subsequently scans Guilmon’s data, giving Guilmon a simplified account of the results while retaining more detailed information himself. Later training includes competitive morning runs enforced with an electric whip and combat against Mechanical Dummies at a shooting range 20 23 24.

Twin Towers and the Deva conflict

When a threatening pillar of data rises near the Twin Towers, Guilmon immediately becomes alert and accompanies Takato to investigate the approaching Ultimate Digimon 27.

During TigerVespamon’s test of the partners, Guilmon evolves into Growlmon and confronts him. The pressure brings Takato and Guilmon into exceptional synchronization, allowing Calumon’s Evolution Light to trigger Great Growlmon’s appearance 37 38.

Wizard Mo Yan later casts Land of No Dust, stripping away Guilmon’s card-granted power and suppressing his ability to digivolve. During the subsequent battle with Sandiramon, Growlmon’s developed Wicked Demon Dragon data lets him detect traces of an unknown visitor left during a time-stopped interval 40 49 50.

During the battle with the rampaging Vajramon, Great Growlmon is pinned beneath a red orb. Takato’s shouted encouragement conveys his feelings and strength to Guilmon, activating Mythological Data acquired from the Devas. Great Growlmon destroys the orb and rejoins the fight alongside the other partners and Alice’s newly evolved Jewelbeemon 66 67.

After Vajramon’s defeat, Makuramon abducts Calumon. Takato subsequently prepares to travel to the Digital World to rescue her and introduces Great Growlmon to Alice as his partner and one of his best friends 69 70.

Dangerous evolution and the birth of Gallantmon

In the Digital World, New Species Devimon’s apparent killing of Leomon and absorption of his data provoke both Takato and Great Growlmon. Devimon secretly amplifies their reactions with Darkness Power. Takato demands more power and pours an enormous surge of Spiritual Power through the D-Ark, which also draws upon Calumon’s Evolution Light. Great Growlmon evolves into the form identified in this confrontation as Examon 94.

This evolution activates a portion of Examon’s core data hidden within Guilmon rather than recreating the original Demon Dragon in full. Its duration is limited, but it possesses enough power to overwhelm New Species Devimon. Although its reason is lost, it remains responsive to Takato’s commands 95 97.

Devimon Triple-Stacked Form eventually leaves Examon critically damaged with Dark Matter Explosion, shattering the Digital Hazard breastplate and destabilizing his data. Takato approaches in tears and reproaches himself, beginning to restore Guilmon’s reason. Holy Angemon Priest Mode attempts to connect their happy memories, but their resonance draws Yggdrasill’s power, which expels his influence 97.

Under Yggdrasill’s light, Takato and Guilmon undergo their “true evolution” together into Gallantmon. Mo Yan then uses Devimon Triple-Stacked Form to test the new Holy Knight’s strength, exchanging ranged attacks before the fight shifts into close quarters 97 98.

Gallantmon later struggles against the combined attacks of Devimon Triple-Stacked Form and Knightmon Legendary Mode. During the battle, Takato and Guilmon’s motivation moves beyond revenge toward justice. BloomLordmon heals Gallantmon with Sunshine, and Guilmon recognizes Alice and Wormmon within the new Digimon by scent. Gallantmon then charges Devimon again as the confrontation becomes a two-on-two battle 107.

Afterward, Takato and Guilmon promise to help Alice recover Dobermon’s data from Knightmon. Guilmon declares that Alice’s friend is also his friend. They subsequently hurry toward the Zhuqiao Shrine after learning that Rika and the others are preparing to meet Zhuqiaomon 114.

Return to the Human World and the Abyssmon battle

During the journey home, Guilmon talks to the Ark about his memories with Takato. After arriving in the Human World, he cheerfully bids the Ark farewell, promises to play with it again, and greets Takato’s parents as Takato introduces him 144.

During the subsequent Okinawa events, Guilmon destroys Archelomon while still in his Rookie form 145.

Against Abyssmon, the partners initially fight in their Ultimate forms. When Abyssmon absorbs more data and wounds them, Mo Yan secretly enables the children to digitize and merge with their partners. Takato and Guilmon become Gallantmon and attack alongside Sakuyamon and Saidakoumon, forcing Abyssmon to seek an escape 148.

DigiSoul and the battle against Nidhogg Beast

During the first battles against DigiDeath’s forces, Growlmon evolves into Great Growlmon to intercept a barrage from the Bubblers. He uses Plasma Blade to slice their energy shots apart 160.

Grand Mage Beast later enters Takato’s mental space and finds a small Megidramon formed from Takato’s negative emotions and Guilmon’s data. He explains that destroying this manifestation would prevent Guilmon from becoming Megidramon again, but would also make their fusion into Gallantmon more difficult. Takato instead accepts DigiSoul and absorbs the manifestation as data and Spiritual Power, gaining strength for himself and Guilmon 163.

Takato subsequently fuses with Megidramon into a Gallantmon whose appearance seems more harmonious and natural than before. He asks the other children to withdraw while he and Guilmon confront DigiDeath’s dragon. Gallantmon’s Crimson Sword passes through the dragon and strikes the fleshy mass beyond it, but the dragon retaliates with a matching attack 166.

As the battle develops, Nidhogg Beast devastates the surrounding city to feed DigiDeath. The children’s anger awakens their DigiSoul, but their attacks initially fail to overcome its rapid recovery. A special data fluctuation then stirs a new power within Gallantmon, which Guilmon and Takato both sense 173.

Gallantmon weakens Nidhogg Beast with Holy Heavenly Thunder and activates Virus Buster: Royal Savior. Sakuyamon, Cherubimon, and BloomLordmon protect his charge, enabling him to destroy the enemy’s DigiCore. Gallantmon and the others absorb only a small portion of the released data, while DigiDeath D-Reaper takes most of it 174.

Search for Wormmon and forced separation

After Wormmon loses his data, Takato refuses to accept the possibility that rebirth as a Digi-Egg could erase the memories and personality of the partner they know. Guilmon senses his resolve and takes his hand. The pair perform Internet Evolution into Gallantmon and fly off to locate Mo Yan and D-Reaper 182.

Gallantmon searches the submerged Experimental Base in Okinawa for Mephistomon’s former Digital Space, but finds no trace of it. After Takato and Guilmon return to the beach, Mo Yan says he cannot prevent Wormmon’s original owner from reclaiming Wormmon’s data. He also announces that the Four Holy Beasts have ordered all Digimon in the Human World to return before the passage between the worlds is sealed 183.

When pillars of light begin separating the children from their fused partners, Takato and the others attempt to maintain their fusions through DigiSoul but fail. Mo Yan additionally devolves Guilmon and the other partners to their In-Training forms as the price of their resistance. Guilmon rises into the sky and disappears, leaving Takato behind 184.

Appearance

Guilmon has red skin, an oversized head, a wide mouth, sharp claws, and a sensitive nose 9 14 17 18.

  • Golden draconic eyes: His pupils narrow into slits when his predatory instincts awaken 18 23.
  • Growlmon form: An enormous crimson dinosaur-like Demon Dragon whose size creates practical problems in the human world 11.
  • Great Growlmon form: An immense red Cyborg Digimon with a metallized upper body, shoulder-mounted Verniers, chest cannons, and a jaw restraint 38.
  • Examon form: A massive dragon with a breastplate bearing the Digital Hazard symbol. The breastplate is shattered during the battle with Devimon Triple-Stacked Form 97.
  • Gallantmon form: A Holy Knight clad in fitted armor made from 99.9% pure Chrono Digi-Alloy, with a Digital Hazard symbol on the chest and a red cape. He carries the holy lance Gram in his right hand and the holy shield Aegis in his left 98.
  • DigiSoul-supported Gallantmon: Appears more harmonious and natural than the earlier fusion, although observers cannot precisely identify the difference 166.
  • Forced In-Training form: The specific form is not named in the account of his departure from the Human World 184.

Personality

Guilmon is guileless, affectionate, and straightforward. He asks questions openly even when others hesitate, and the narration describes him as both endearingly clueless and capable of offering unexpected guidance. He also notices emotional changes in others, such as Impmon becoming happier during training 23 41.

His attachment to Takato outweighs his desire to evolve: he is content to remain Guilmon if they can stay together. That affection also motivates his request for training. He eagerly praises Takato, shares his bread with Mo Yan and Impmon, and worries that Impmon might choke when Mo Yan feeds him too roughly 14 17 24 27.

His gentle everyday behavior contrasts with powerful draconic instincts. In battle and hunting exercises, he becomes intensely competitive, ferocious, and eager to unleash his strength 4 13 18.

Guilmon’s innocence and Takato’s willingness to correct his mistakes help him resist the Wicked Demon Dragon’s influence. His different development under Takato’s care also becomes significant to the holy Digimon studying how human Spiritual Power can influence evolution 24 82.

His kindness extends beyond his immediate partner: he treats Alice’s friends as his own and promises to help save Dobermon. Even during the Gallantmon battles, his fighting spirit remains closely tied to Takato’s feelings, with the pair eventually moving from revenge toward a desire to fight for justice 107 114.

His darker potential remains dangerous. Anger over Leomon, Takato’s killing intent, and externally applied Darkness Power can stir his Demon Dragon data and produce a rampaging evolution. Nevertheless, their bond remains strong enough for him to obey Takato in that state and later recover his reason through their shared memories 94 95 97.

Abilities & Skills

Guilmon Cannon

A fire attack discharged from Guilmon’s mouth 4 16.

  • Targets Mo Yan’s wings during a coordinated attack with Terriermon and Renamon 4.
  • Counters Impmon’s Dark Night Flame 16.
  • Combines with close-range movement and a spinning tail strike to defeat training dummies efficiently 24.

Draconic Physiology and Predatory Instincts

Guilmon possesses strong physical abilities, rapid combat growth, and an instinctive drive to challenge other dragons 17 23 24.

  • Scent tracking: Uses surrounding smells to build an impression of his environment during hunting 18.
  • Disguise recognition: Identifies Mo Yan and Impmon by scent despite their human disguises 14.
  • Speed: Quickly catches Impmon during their morning run and overtakes him when his wild instincts awaken 23.
  • Threat awareness: Warns Takato before Mo Yan attacks and immediately reacts to the threatening data surge near the Twin Towers 5 27.
  • Recognition through fusion: While fused into Gallantmon, identifies Alice and Wormmon within BloomLordmon by their scents 107.
  • Rookie-form combat strength: Destroys Archelomon without evolving 145.

Tamer Bond and Digi-Card Support

Takato’s bond with Guilmon allows emotional synchronization and supports his evolution. During the Dragon Battle, Takato can feel Growlmon’s emotions in real time 13 37.

Card / Support Effect
Enhancement Plug-In W Strengthens Guilmon during the coordinated attack on Mo Yan 4.
White Wings Gives Growlmon six white wings and the ability to fly 12 37.
SnowAgumon Grants blizzard power, allowing Guilmon to extinguish Impmon’s flames and encase him in ice 16.
Energy Explosion Pours a powerful surge of energy into Growlmon before he uses Demon Dragon Flame against Sandiramon 50.
Calumon’s Evolution Light Triggers Matrix Evolution into Great Growlmon when Takato and Guilmon synchronize under pressure 37.
D-Ark and embedded Gallantmon core data Converts Takato’s Spiritual Power into strength and gradually supplies the partners with Gallantmon core data placed inside it by Qinglongmon 82 94 99.
DigiSoul Enables Takato to integrate the mental Megidramon manifestation and provides a new source of strength for himself and Guilmon 163.
  • Card support can grant powers opposed to Guilmon’s normal attribute, as demonstrated by his blizzard attack 16.
  • Land of No Dust can dispel those external boosts while suppressing his own power and digivolution 40.
  • Takato’s encouragement can convey his feelings and strength directly to Guilmon. In Great Growlmon’s battle with Vajramon, this interacts with Deva-derived Mythological Data and enables him to break free 67.
  • The bond can also transmit destructive emotions: Takato’s rage contributes to the dangerous Examon evolution when amplified by Devimon’s Darkness Power 94 95.
  • While fused as Gallantmon, Takato and Guilmon retain distinct internal voices and can communicate about what they perceive and intend to do 107 173.
  • DigiSoul does not make their fusion impossible to disrupt; Mo Yan forcibly separates them despite their attempts to sustain it 184.

Wicked Demon Dragon Data and Digital Hazard

Mo Yan’s scan reveals Demon Dragon data, flame data, latent information, absorbed Digimon data, and a Digital Hazard representing Guilmon’s status and privileges 20.

  • Megidramon watches Mo Yan’s examination because Guilmon’s data provides insight into Megidramon’s underlying data 20.
  • Mo Yan later copies Guilmon’s data again; the Wicked Demon Dragon tolerates this provided he does not cross a line 25.
  • TigerVespamon identifies Guilmon as a “Wicked Demon Dragon Juvenile” and senses tremendous hidden power within Growlmon 37.
  • Further development of this data enables Growlmon to sense residual traces of another Digimon’s presence during the Sandiramon encounter 50.
  • Guilmon’s origin in donated Demon Dragon core data is later confirmed by Qinglongmon, who identifies the donor as Examon in his explanation 97 99.
  • Takato’s Spiritual Power can activate the hidden Examon core data, producing a powerful but time-limited dragon evolution. In the induced rampage, Guilmon loses reason but continues to obey Takato 95 97.
  • A mental Megidramon manifestation embodies Takato’s negative emotions together with Guilmon’s data. Grand Mage Beast explains that simply destroying it would remove Guilmon’s ability to become Megidramon again while also making Gallantmon fusion more difficult 163.

Data Stability

After the Dragon Battle, Guilmon’s data becomes unusually resistant to alteration 14.

  • Mo Yan cannot use Mimicry to give him a human disguise because his stabilized data is difficult to change 14.
  • The same stability makes ordinary evolution more difficult, though it does not prevent his later Tamer-supported evolutions 14 37.
  • Electrical stimulation during the morning run further stabilizes Guilmon’s data 23.

Gallantmon Fusion and Virus Buster

Takato and Guilmon’s Gallantmon is formed through their joint evolution rather than being the separate Gallantmon who serves among Yggdrasill’s Royal Knights. Mo Yan judges their core essence to be equivalent, but their version lacks the Royal Knight’s accumulated experience and Yggdrasill-bestowed Authority Power 97 98.

Their later DigiSoul-supported evolution grants access to a new power that initially remains dormant. A special data fluctuation during the Nidhogg Beast battle finally allows Gallantmon to awaken Virus Buster, an Authority-like power that counters evil beings 166 173 174.

  • Spiritual qualification: Their previous descent into darkness and subsequent recovery satisfy the minimum requirement of experiencing darkness and finding the light again 174.
  • Modified DigiSoul: Mo Yan’s additions to Takato’s supplied DigiSoul, combined with Mo Yan’s unusual state, help unlock the power 174.
  • Practical application: With targeting assistance secretly supplied by Mo Yan and protection from allied Digimon, Gallantmon uses Virus Buster: Royal Savior to reach and destroy Nidhogg Beast’s DigiCore 174.
  • Distinction from the Royal Knight: A Gallantmon created by Yggdrasill, granted the appropriate Authority Power, and subjected to the necessary trials can use this power freely; Takato and Guilmon reach it through their own particular circumstances 174.

Relationships

  • Takato Matsuki — Creator, Tamer, and closest companion. Guilmon seeks strength to protect him, while Takato learns to respect Guilmon’s independent will 4 13 17. Takato supplies his designs, while later revelations establish Qinglongmon’s role in his actual creation. Their bond enables joint evolution into Gallantmon and eventually DigiSoul-supported fusion 97 99 163 166. Guilmon supports Takato’s determination to recover Wormmon’s data before the two are forcibly separated 182 184.
  • Mo Yan — Initially an opponent, later a caretaker and trainer. His teaching develops Guilmon’s instincts, but also serves his own interest in collecting evolution and Demon Dragon data 5 10 17 20 25. His manifestations deliberately provoke the dangerous evolution and subsequently test Gallantmon, while Grand Mage Beast supplies the DigiSoul that strengthens the partners 94 95 98 163. Mo Yan ultimately forces their fusion to end and sends Guilmon back to the Digital World 184.
  • Impmon — Fellow trainee and competitive rival. Guilmon stops his rampage, races against him, and innocently notices feelings Impmon prefers to hide. Guilmon’s performance at the shooting range strengthens Impmon’s determination 16 23 24.
  • Dracomon — Training partner created from Mo Yan’s DigiCore. Their Wild Jungle hunting contest ends in a draw 17 18 20.
  • Renamon and Terriermon — Fellow partner Digimon who coordinate attacks with Guilmon and share later confrontations 4 5 37 40.
  • Calumon — Supplies the Evolution Light that triggers Guilmon’s Matrix Evolution into Great Growlmon 37. Her abduction by Makuramon prompts Takato’s plan to travel to the Digital World to rescue her 69 70.
  • TigerVespamon — Tests Guilmon’s power and potential as part of Qinglongmon’s plan to strengthen the DigiDestined’s partners 36 37.
  • Megidramon — Monitors the collection and examination of Guilmon’s Demon Dragon data from the Dark Area 14 20 25. A later mental manifestation bearing this name consists of Takato’s negative emotions and Guilmon’s data; Takato integrates it through DigiSoul rather than destroying it 163.
  • Qinglongmon — Brings Guilmon into being using Takato’s designs and donated Demon Dragon core data. He also places Gallantmon core data in the D-Ark and gradually supplies it to Takato and Guilmon 97 99.
  • Yggdrasill — Jointly selects Takato with Qinglongmon, helps obtain Guilmon’s foundational core data, and supplies the Gallantmon data used in their development. Yggdrasill directly intervenes when their memories resonate, enabling their first Gallantmon fusion 97 99.
  • Alice and Wormmon — Allies whom Guilmon recognizes even after their fusion into BloomLordmon. He and Takato promise to help Alice recover Dobermon’s data, and later search for a way to recover Wormmon’s lost data 107 114 182 183.
  • The Ark — Guilmon talks to it about his experiences with Takato during the return journey to the Human World. He bids it farewell and promises to play together again when it withdraws into Network Space 144.
  • Royal Knight Gallantmon — A separate individual whose core data contributes to Takato and Guilmon’s evolution. He later comes at Yggdrasill’s instruction to collect something their new evolution has produced, noting that their new power enabled the development he needed 99 179.
