Background / History

Caesar comes from the Gattuso Family, a wealthy Italian Hybrid dynasty with extensive political influence and advanced research facilities. Its elders personally selected him as their heir, but he regarded the family as something to conquer rather than a home 42 72 74.

His mother died while he was young. Witnessing her death changed his temperament, making him fierce and combative. Her description of him as a kind child remained important to his later understanding of why he should become a warrior 86 87.

Caesar originally coveted leadership of the Lionheart Society. After its previous president rejected his pride, he joined the Student Union instead and developed it into a rival to Cassell College's oldest society. Under his leadership, the Student Union repeatedly won Free Day and retained Norton Hall until Lu Mingfei's victory 23 62.

Appearance

Caesar has golden hair, rare ice-blue eyes, and features compared to a Greek sculpture 22.

  • Combat clothing: Wears a deep-red hooded combat uniform during Free Day 22.
  • Personal style: Favors conspicuous luxury, including immaculate white suits and elaborate casual clothing 89 114.
  • Bloodline activation: His eyes shine gold; Blood Rage can produce scales, audible changes in his bones, and increasingly draconic physical traits 65 67 107.

Personality

Caesar is proud, competitive, and convinced that he can become the world's best. Even after losing decisively to Lu Mingfei, he initially treats him as a teacher he will eventually challenge, much as he regards Angers. Discovering that some Hybrids naturally exceed the critical bloodline limit unsettles him because it challenges his belief in his own exceptional standing 62.

His competitiveness extends beyond combat. He treats gift-giving as another contest with Chu Zihang and changes his airport clothing after deciding that Chu Zihang's relaxed appearance has outdone his own bearing. He also enjoys champagne, fine wine, parties, and luxurious surroundings 23 89 113 114.

Despite his arrogance, Caesar accepts defeat and honors his commitments. He relinquishes Norton Hall and a Bugatti after Free Day, shares essential weapons with Chu Zihang, and repeatedly risks himself to protect others. His opposition to the Gattuso Family's experiments is grounded in their destruction of human dignity; when he decides the family must disappear, he insists that innocent people be spared 23 62 74 107 113.

The Beijing disaster makes him more composed without erasing his irreverence. He remains willing to trust Pazzi's word, questions the family's internal power structure, and eventually accepts bodily enhancement as part of his responsibility as a warrior 77 87.

Abilities & Skills

Word Spirit: Kamaitachi

Kamaitachi gives Caesar detailed awareness of sound and air disturbances within its domain 20 63.

  • Locates enemies without relying on sight, allowing him to strike accurately in darkness 63.
  • Detects incoming throwing knives so Vampiric Scythes can intercept them 91.
  • Supports reconnaissance, firearms use, and the rapid elimination of sentries 83 107.
  • Cannot be used normally on Cassell's campus while Word Spirit: Discipline is in effect 20.
  • Can be obstructed or disrupted by hostile domains and other interference 107 142 145.

Word Spirit: Vampiric Scythes

The advanced form of Kamaitachi, Vampiric Scythes is sequence number 71. Its manifestations are wind blades whose bloodthirstiness reflects Caesar's own desire to kill 65 67.

  • Changes his sensory swarm into an offensive force 65.
  • Under Second-Stage Blood Rage, creates a storm capable of opening a gap in Jormungandr's domain, though it cannot reach her directly 67.
  • After the Nibelungen Project, operates alongside Kamaitachi: one detects threats while the other destroys them 89 91.
  • Prolonged, high-output use places severe pressure on his mind and eyes 67.

Blood Rage

A forbidden mental technique reconstructed by Chu Zihang from Lionheart Society records and then shared with Caesar. It temporarily intensifies the user's dragon bloodline 62.

  • Requires the appropriate mental state; Caesar fails several times before succeeding under mortal danger 65.
  • Enhances physical power and strengthens his Word Spirit 65 67.
  • At the third stage, accelerates his metabolism enough to remove a neurotoxin from his bloodstream 107.
  • Cannot be actively switched off and risks pushing the user beyond the critical bloodline limit 62.
  • Causes bleeding, hallucinations, and physical exhaustion at higher stages; Caesar continues to suffer third-stage aftereffects late in the war 67 143.

King's Flame and Dictator's Alchemical Domain

Lu Mingfei seals King's Flame into a hunting knife forged for Caesar. By the later war, Dictator can release flames no weaker than Chu Zihang's King's Flame 74 83 142.

  • Gives Caesar a fire-based attack separate from his original Word Spirit 83.
  • Is used alongside Blood Rage and Dictator's Alchemical Domain to destroy the Frogmen attacking him, Susie, and Jude Jiqu 107.
  • Can be coordinated with Chu Zihang's flames to attack a larger hostile domain 142.

Eye of the Wind King

Caesar demonstrates Eye of the Wind King during the war following the convergence of neighboring timelines 142.

  • Combines its wind with King's Flame to produce a powerful fire tornado 142 145.

Combat and Leadership

  • Firearms: Uses paired modified Desert Eagles, submachine guns, and specialized anti-dragon ammunition 54 62 67.
  • Close combat: Dual-wields hunting knives during Free Day and adapts to improvised weapons when necessary 22 71.
  • Tactical coordination: Assigns firing roles, distributes weapons, and provides contingency plans when fighting alongside others 62 107.
  • Battlefield protection: Joins Chu Zihang in drawing Deadpools away from trapped civilians by exposing blood strengthened through Blood Rage 65.
  • Word Spirit training: Obtains historical training methods from Angers after completing the Nibelungen Project 89.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Dictator — His named hunting-knife weapon, used as a paired defense during Free Day. Later passages identify Dictator as an alchemical weapon capable of releasing King's Flame 22 89 142.
  • King's Flame hunting knife — Forged by Lu Mingfei from banquet silverware and imbued with King's Flame 74.
  • Paired modified Desert Eagles — Signature weapons of the Student Union president. Caesar intends to pass them to his successor and lends them to allies when circumstances demand 54 62 83 107.
  • Philosopher's Stone bullets — Specialized rounds fitted to his Desert Eagles. Their spiritual payload is powerful, but their physical warheads can still be stopped before penetrating a Dragon King's defenses 54 67 96.
  • Refined Sulfur Bomb — A manually detonated, dragon-poisoning weapon carried into the Beijing Nibelungen. Jormungandr contains its blast 62 67.
  • Bugatti Veyron — Given to Lu Mingfei after Caesar loses Free Day 23.
  • Norton Hall — Former Student Union headquarters, surrendered after the same defeat; Caesar relocates the Union to Amber Hall 23.

Relationships

  • Lu Mingfei — Begins as a junior rival and becomes Caesar's combat teacher, mission leader, rescuer, and political ally. He exposes the Gattuso experiments, arms Caesar, and later permits him to rebuild the family 22 62 67 74 128 138.
  • Chu Zihang — Archrival and eventual trusted friend. They lead competing societies, exchange combat knowledge, survive the Beijing crisis together, and fight side by side in the final war 23 62 65 89 142.
  • Chen Motong / Nono — Girlfriend and later fiancée. She accepts his proposal on the road into Nibelungen, stipulating that their gravestone bear only their chosen names 83 86.
  • His mother — Her death profoundly shapes his personality. Her words about kindness and the cruelty of the world help define his later commitment to becoming a warrior 86 87.
  • Pompeii Gattuso — Father and Gattuso Family head. Ultimately consumes Caesar's body and attempts to devour his soul before Lu Mingfei intervenes 124 128 132.
  • Frost Gattuso — Uncle and acting family head. Caesar mocks his rigidity and rejects being equated with him, but later works with him on rebuilding the family 52 87 138.
  • Pazzi — Family secretary and attendant. Caesar trusts his denial of involvement in the assassination attempt against Lu Mingfei; both later become victims of Pompeii's plan 77 128.
  • Angers — Principal and teacher whom Caesar initially hopes to surpass. Provides advanced Word Spirit training methods after Caesar's enhancement 62 89.
  • Susie and Jude Jiqu — Temporary combat partners at Tokyo Harbor. Caesar distributes weapons to them and counters the ambush threatening all three 107.

  • Is held aboard Pompeii's vessel. Pompeii consumes his physical body and attempts to consume his soul, but Lu Mingfei rescues Caesar and Pazzi 124 128 132.
  • Lu Mingfei subsequently addresses their lack of bodies through soul vessels cultivated as “eggs”; the process is not presented as immediate or guaranteed resurrection 132.
  • Later reappears and secures permission to rebuild the Gattuso Family using released minor political offenders. He accepts that survival now depends on confronting the approaching apocalypse rather than preserving the old family's prestige 138.

War and Timeline Convergence

  • Serves with Chu Zihang in a brigade-level special operations unit. Their patrol encounters hostile domains as neighboring timelines begin merging 142.
  • After their camp falls, the pair kills several hundred Deadpools and a Second-Generation Dragon. Caesar suffers lingering third-stage Blood Rage aftereffects 143.
  • Explains that he brought a new generation from households long associated with the Gattuso Family into the war and could not abandon them by remaining in the rear 144.
