- Potential maximum-affection reward: At 100%, Kotone would gain the Chainsaw Devil’s abilities and be able to transform directly into “Chainsaw Man.” This remains an unachieved reward in the supplied chapters 49.
Background / History
Before meeting Kotone, Pochita had already defeated the Gun Devil in an instant. The Gun Devil subsequently lost its memories, and its body was divided among world powers and devils. Kotone initially connects Pochita’s abdominal bullet wounds with that battle; the later narration explicitly attributes the Gun Devil’s defeat to Pochita 2 17.
Kotone finds him in Tokyo with several bleeding bullet wounds and offers his forearm so Pochita can drink his blood. After recovering, Pochita accepts the name Kotone gives him and agrees to remain by his side. Kotone later learns that Pochita understood this exchange as a contract 1 36.
This encounter takes place in 1993, four years before the original story’s main timeline, just before Denji and Pochita were supposed to meet. Kotone’s intervention prevents their original bond from forming; Pochita instead becomes Kotone’s companion, while Kotone helps Denji partly to compensate for that change 1 2.
Appearance
Pochita normally resembles a small orange dog, with chainsaw components built into his body 1 3.
- Head-mounted chainsaw: Short and inactive at rest; extends into a full-sized cutting blade when started 3 9.
- Pull-cord tail: Functions as the chainsaw’s starter 1 3.
- Back handle: Allows Kotone to hold and wield him like a conventional chainsaw 3.
- Initial injuries: Multiple bleeding bullet wounds in his belly when first encountered 1.
- Public impression: Often considered cute or pet-like, though the visible chainsaw still frightens people 10 38.
Personality
Pochita is initially wary and fierce toward Kotone, but relaxes after receiving blood and treatment. He readily cooperates with Kotone’s requests, including becoming a weapon and staying inside the Kamui Dimension 1 3 30.
He enjoys treats, television, and video games, but shared company matters more than the activities themselves. His affection rises during their arcade-and-burger weekend primarily because Kotone enjoys it alongside him. He prefers an ordinary, happy life with Kotone over returning to his Black Chainsaw form 24 30 36 42.
His harmless behavior does not mean indiscriminate love for humanity. Kotone notes that Pochita bears humans neither particular ill will nor general goodwill, and that his Black Chainsaw form would kill someone who provoked him. Kotone also recalls his original-story habit of answering cries for help and his dream of being hugged 1 3 12.
Abilities & Skills
Living Chainsaw Weapon
Pulling Pochita’s tail starts his engine and extends the blade on his head. Kotone wields him by the handle on his back 3.
- Cuts through devil flesh and hide with ease, including the Crab Devil’s apparently durable shell 3 11.
- Used to sever limbs, bisect bodies, and repeatedly dismember regenerating targets 3 9 20.
- Returns to his small, dog-like configuration after being put down 3.
- While Kotone makes both himself and Pochita intangible, the chainsaw cannot strike enemies. Kotone must deactivate intangibility to attack; this limitation belongs to Kamui, not Pochita 8.
Blood-Based Healing
Pochita heals his initial wounds by drinking Kotone’s blood 1.
- Human blood sustains devils’ strength and repairs their injuries 3.
- After feeding, he licks Kotone’s wounded arm 1.
Black Chainsaw Form
Pochita can return to his fully transformed Black Chainsaw form whenever he wishes, but chooses not to because he wants to continue his peaceful life with Kotone 36.
- Kotone associates this form with answering calls for help and lethal responses to provocation 3 12.
- Revealing the Chainsaw Devil openly could attract foreign attention; Kotone considers using it to draw out Reze, then rejects the plan 36.
- No return to this form is shown in the supplied chapters.
Devil Erasure
Pochita can erase devils by eating them, rather than merely killing them and allowing their normal reincarnation cycle to continue 2.
- Ordinary devil deaths lead to rebirth between Hell and the human world 2 9.
- No use of this erasure ability is shown in the supplied encounters.
Weapon-Hybrid Potential
Pochita is identified as the Chainsaw Devil’s heart, capable of turning Denji into a weapon human in the original story. Kotone also considers merging with him to become a weapon hybrid 5 36.
- Neither fusion occurs in the supplied chapters.
- Their existing contract is an agreement for Pochita to stay with Kotone, not a transfer of devil powers 38.
Communication
Pochita usually communicates through barks, gestures, and expressions. Kotone cannot understand his barks, though he knows from the original story that Pochita can speak and rarely does so 1 3 6.
Relationships
- Asaba Kotone — Rescuer, companion, and contract partner. Kotone describes their bond as both friendship and family, provides food and entertainment, and shelters him from possible discovery by Makima 1 22 30 38.
- Denji — Meets him through Kotone rather than forming their original-story partnership. Pochita initially bears Denji no ill will but feels no particular affection toward him; they share meals and accompany Kotone together 2 6 10.
- Aki Hayakawa — Kotone’s hunting partner initially reacts to Pochita with disgust and cannot understand treating a devil as a companion 12.
- Kobeni Higashiyama — Initially frightened by him after her rescue, then reassured by his gentle appearance. She shares an ice-cream outing and amusement-park visit with him and Kotone 15 16 39.
- Makima / Control Devil — Calls him “Chainsaw Man” and seeks him. Kotone hides Pochita in the Kamui Dimension in anticipation of her arrival and search 1 14 30.
- War Devil and Famine Devil — Identified by Kotone as other Horsemen seeking Pochita in the human world; no direct meeting is shown in the supplied chapters 32.
