Background / History

Goal and Astronomy of Truth

Kurumi’s stated goal is to travel thirty years into the past and discover the starting point that changed the world. Luo Shu interprets this as an attempt to investigate—and potentially prevent—the first Abyss Descent. When he instead asks about tragedies caused by the Origin Elf, Kurumi does not recognize the term 235.

She joins Astronomy of Truth for access to its long-lived Demons and half-Demons, whose lifespans can fuel her abilities. Her position as an “Angel” and internal cleaner gives her opportunities to feed; she regards the organization more as a food reserve than a cause she supports 236.

At a banquet in Warsaw, the association introduces her as its new Environmental Angel. Yatsukami Meiga senses danger while she plays the piano, but Rodis explains that she is “only dining” 141.

First Encounters with SDS

Kurumi interrupts Suzuka Dairenji’s attack on a Ghoul gathering, consuming the trapped Ghouls with her City of Devouring Time. After Suzuka escapes through a paper doll, Kurumi follows her to a hotel, where Luo Shu and Natsuki Minamiya ambush her 214.

She refuses Luo Shu’s offer of cooperation under an equal contract. Natsuki seals her shadow passages, but Kurumi’s original body breaks the spatial lockdown with a spatial quake and sends in more clones. Luo Shu repels them with Calamity Bestowal, transferring pain taken from Kisara 215 223.

Neither side commits its full strength. Every Kurumi inside the hotel is a clone; her original acts only from outside to disrupt the barrier. The encounter leaves both sides aware that the other is dangerous, while Kurumi temporarily redirects her lifespan gathering toward Ghouls 215 216.

Sharon subsequently captures a clone. Kurumi stops Sharon’s time and alters her recent memories with an Abyssal Artifact, but cannot penetrate her defenses or prevent her from escaping with the captive. The resulting negotiation leaves one clone with Luo Shu as a communication officer and confined secretary 218 219.

Alliance with Luo Shu

The retained clone investigates SDS while Kurumi takes an interest in Luo Shu’s vast, apparently unchanging lifespan. However, the underground Secret Management Zone feels capable of devouring her, causing her original body to flee after an initial visit 234.

Luo Shu offers a different basis for cooperation: joining his Familia would release the restraints on her power. Curious but suspicious, Kurumi sends clones to search his office and the underground zone. When the zone cuts off her connection to the scouts, she arranges a timed transfer of her original-body status before entering personally 236 238 239 240.

Inside, she discovers the inverted Tree of Kabbalah and learns that Zafkiel embodies one-tenth of God’s authority. Luo Shu proposes reclaiming the third Sephira and returning its power through himself, both freeing her abilities and protecting her from God reviving within her. After restoring her main body, Kurumi signs the Familia contract 240 241.

Her recruitment also benefits Luo Shu: obtaining his first Demigod Familia member activates system support functions, including the Dream Simulation Room. Luo Shu conceals a further consequence of the arrangement—the returned Sephira strengthens the system’s hold on Takamiya Mio, the source of Kurumi’s power 236 241 245.

Demigod Training

Kurumi tests her awakened abilities against a simulated version of herself capable of using them to their theoretical limits. She suffers twenty-three defeats, initially struggling even with Concept Bestowal. Repeated losses teach her to attach time and space concepts to her weapon, though she remains far less proficient than her opponent 242 243.

Unknown to her during the test, Luo Shu controls the simulated Kurumi for much of the beating. She later realizes that the expressive opponents were his work, unlike the expressionless copies she challenges afterward 243 255.

Preventing Lacus Clyne’s Death

Kurumi uses information from a future timeline to intervene in Lacus Clyne’s recruitment. She arranges to accompany Luo Shu’s meeting with Lacus, then requests a private conversation with them both 251 253 255.

Her warning describes Lacus dying immediately after joining the Familia, followed by SDS blaming and attacking Luo Shu. Kurumi brings the matter into the protected Secret Management Zone and promises to suppress the Kusanagi Sword if it reacts during the signing 255 257.

Lacus joins safely after Luo Shu’s throne subdues the sword’s phantom. Luo Shu later thanks Kurumi for preventing the sword from fleeing with Lacus’s soul and acknowledges that he owes her a favor 257 261.

Appearance

Kurumi has a petite build and wears black-and-red Gothic clothing 238 243.

  • Hair: Black, with two uneven locks compared to the hands of a clock 238.
  • Eyes: Mismatched gold and red eyes; her golden left eye can be hidden beneath her bangs 238 240.
  • Astral Dress: Wears the Kamui Third Astral Dress, also called Sanban, separately from her ordinary Gothic dress 239 240.
  • Manifested Angel: Zafkiel appears as an enormous golden clock behind her 238.

Personality

Kurumi cultivates an elegant, flirtatious manner, remaining composed even when surrounded at gunpoint. She uses teasing and ambiguity to unsettle opponents, conceal her intentions, and turn conversations to her advantage 214 215.

Her playfulness often becomes deliberate provocation. At a department meal, she inflames tensions over Luo Shu’s relationships; Yukinoshita Yukino recognizes that she is stirring up the conflict. Yet Kurumi is intensely embarrassed when Luo Shu exposes either her past behavior or the intimate origin of his pain-transfer attack 222 223 235.

Beneath that manner, she is cautious and methodical. She scouts through clones, assesses unfamiliar defenses, and prepares an original-body replacement before risking entry into the Secret Management Zone. Her clones also act as an advisory group, though they can mislead one another and complain about memories their original deliberately shares 218 238 239 240.

Her predatory methods coexist with a larger ambition. Luo Shu considers her someone who wants to save the world rather than a genuine supporter of Astronomy of Truth, and her later intervention protects both Lacus and the Familia from a disastrous future 235 236 255 261.

Abilities & Skills

Zafkiel — Time Manipulation

Zafkiel originates from Kabbalah’s third Sephira, “Understanding.” It manifests as a golden clock whose hands become an antique rifle and pistol; its special bullets produce different temporal effects 157 238.

Bullet Documented effect
Fifth Bullet Foresees the future 255.
Sixth Bullet Transfers Kurumi’s consciousness into herself several days earlier 255.
Seventh Bullet Stops the time of a target it strikes; used to ambush Sharon 218.
Eighth Bullet Used to recall her scattered clones and create new ones 238.
Ninth Bullet Connects the minds of people on different timelines 255.
  • Cost: Temporal abilities consume her own time, making gathered lifespan a crucial resource 157 215.
  • Early restrictions: World suppression limits her spiritual-energy output and multiplies the cost of her time abilities 218.
  • Future information: Several bullets can produce effects resembling prophecy. The precise method behind her warning about Lacus is not identified 255.
  • Anti-divination: Her Angel heavily interferes with Luo Shu’s attempts to investigate her through the Occult Studies Encyclopedia 236.

Timeline Clones and Original-Body Transfer

Kurumi summons versions of herself from different timelines rather than simple visual duplicates 165 216.

  • Independent activity: Clones fight, scout, maintain surveillance, and advise the original 215 218 238.
  • Memory recovery: Memories are not automatically shared. Reabsorbing a clone returns its experiences to the original 218 238.
  • Replacement safeguard: She can arrange for a clone to become the new original after a set interval, then transfer main-body status back 239 241.
  • Original-body distinction: Zafkiel inhabits the original, allowing it to detect the hidden connection to the Kabbalah Tree that her scouts miss 240.
  • Connection limit: The Secret Management Zone blocks contact between clones inside and outside it 239 240.

City of Devouring Time

The City of Devouring Time consumes victims’ vitality and provides an alternate space accessible through black-and-red shadows 214 215.

  • Devours Ghouls and immobilizes Suzuka Dairenji through vitality erosion 214.
  • Allows clones to emerge from walls, ceilings, floors, bedding, and other surfaces 215 238.
  • Provides passages through physical barriers, including the Secret Management Zone’s metal wall 240.
  • Can be forcibly closed by Natsuki Minamiya’s Spatial Spell Formula 215.

Spatial Quakes

As a Spirit, Kurumi can generate spatial quakes 158 215.

  • Her original body uses one from outside the hotel to shake open Natsuki’s spatial barrier 215 216.
  • The resulting gaps let her send additional clones into the sealed room 215.

Mother of the Highest — Spacetime Authority

Her unique Demigod Class governs a fragment of spacetime authority, extending beyond time manipulation alone 241.

  • Concept Bestowal: Attaches time and space concepts to her flintlock, allowing conceptual attacks. She learns to apply it through repeated simulation defeats 243.
  • Demonstrated potential: Her full-strength simulated counterpart uses time stop, acceleration and deceleration, spatial jumps, spatial refraction, spatial solidification, and spacetime-shattering attacks 242 243.
  • Conceptual damage: Even the secondary conceptual collision from the simulated counterpart’s attack kills Luo Shu through his Calamity Messenger defenses 242.
  • Mastery limit: Possessing these abilities does not mean she can immediately use them optimally; her own copy repeatedly overwhelms her 243.

Combat Limitations

  • Pre-awakening attack power: Despite her versatile abilities, she cannot damage Sharon even after stopping her time and exhausting her attacks 218.
  • Resource dependence: Drawn-out combat risks exhausting her lifespan reserves, particularly under the early restrictions on her power 218.
  • Unfamiliar powers: Luo Shu’s Calamity Bestowal forces her clones to retreat before she understands how it works 215.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Zafkiel’s firearms — An antique rifle and pistol formed from the clock’s long and short hands; used to fire temporal bullets 238.
  • Sanban / Kamui Third Astral Dress — Her manifested Astral Dress, dismissed when she abandons hostilities during the Kabbalah Tree encounter 239 240.
  • Memory-altering Abyssal Artifact — Obtained from Astronomy of Truth. Temporarily alters recent memories; Kurumi uses it on Sharon after stopping her time 218.

Relationships

  • Luo Shu — Initially an opponent and coveted source of lifespan; later her Familia’s leader. Their relationship combines mutual deception, teasing, cooperation, and growing trust. He acknowledges owing her a favor after she prevents Lacus’s death 215 234 240 241 261.
  • Sharon — Captures one of her clones and resists all her early attacks. Kurumi manipulates Sharon’s memories but cannot stop her from taking the captive away; Sharon later remains interested in settling the score 218 245.
  • Natsuki Minamiya — Opposes her during the hotel ambush. Natsuki closes the City of Devouring Time, while Kurumi’s spatial quake exposes a weakness in her lockdown 215 216.
  • Suzuka Dairenji — Interrupted opponent whom Kurumi pursues from the Ghoul warehouse to a hotel. Suzuka serves as bait in SDS’s attempt to capture her 214 215.
  • Lacus Clyne — SDS’s Supreme Chairman. Kurumi uses future knowledge to protect her during Familia recruitment and offers to suppress the Kusanagi Sword 253 255 257.
  • Yukinoshita Yukino — Department colleague who recognizes her provocations and warns Eto Yoshimura not to antagonize her 222 236.
  • Takamiya Mio — Identified by Luo Shu as the source of Kurumi’s powers. Kurumi’s own knowledge differs from his expectations: she does not recognize the term “Origin Elf” 235 236.

Trivia

  • Kurumi once wore an eyepatch while believing that a terrifying power was sealed in her eye. Luo Shu’s knowledge of this phase badly embarrasses her 235.
  • She eats the lunch Kisara prepared for Luo Shu, leaving him to discover the empty basket after she departs 236.
  • By Chapter 267, she has secretly observed SDS closely enough to warn Luo Shu that the widening gap in power and influence could discourage Utaha Kasumigaoka 267.
