Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Happiny → Chansey | 27 29 | Flashbacks establish that she trained under Mienshao as a Happiny and had evolved relatively recently when she began her Pokémon Center internship. The evolution itself is not shown. |
| Heal Pulse awakened | 23 | Discovered while trying to save a bleeding Poochyena after exhausting Egg Bomb. Initially unstable, but capable of healing without consuming her own HP. |
| Assessed level 23; Attack 29 | 27 | An inspection establishes her level and physical Attack despite extensive martial training. Her Special Attack is 33. |
| Attack 29 → 31 → 44 | 27 | Attack rises rapidly during hospitalization. The interface attributes the change to an internal mutation caused by laser-ray exposure, not ordinary training. |
| Attack 54, last recorded before Inspection Card expiration | 32 | Shen Qi reports the final reading taken before his Inspection Card expired. Chansey gradually recovers from her weakness and recognizes her increased strength. |
| Coordinated attacks with Shen Qi | 34 35 | Shen Qi learns to fit his Normal-type energy into her move pathways, strengthening Mega Kick and later supporting Double-Edge during the Berry-field rescue. |
| Moderated racing support | 79 | Shen Qi uses Energy Coordination to smooth her explosive Helping Hand delivery, reducing wheelspin and slightly extending the boost. |
| Mutation completed; broader physical improvement | 109 | The laser-mutation notice disappears from her health index. Attack and Defense have risen sharply, and Speed is higher than expected for her species. Brick Break reaches 75% proficiency and Mega Kick reaches 80%. |
| Level 29 → 30 | 133 | Continued training raises her level, while Buneary also benefits from practicing under her. |
| Broader offensive tactics | 270 | Opens an exchange with the special move Echoed Voice rather than immediately charging with Double-Edge, showing a gentler and more varied application of her martial training. |
| Level 43; offensive Egg Bomb acquired | 340 341 | Her physical Attack approaches 100, far beyond ordinary Chansey expectations. She independently acquires an explosive, damage-dealing Egg Bomb, but still cannot learn Protect or Secret Power at this point. |
| Body Slam learned | 348 349 356 357 | Mienshao gives her a Body Slam TM. Subsequent training adds the move to her move pool; Serene Grace increases its likelihood of inflicting paralysis. |
| Secret Power learned | 370 | Instruction from Dodo finally produces a usable Secret Power. Protect remains beyond her grasp. |
| Protect awakened; Chansey → Blissey | 439 | Her desire to protect Shen Qi allows her to form barriers against concealed weapons. She immediately evolves into Blissey during the Tulip Squad pursuit. |
Background / History
Chansey grew up on an offshore island. As a Happiny, she traveled with her mother aboard a Wailord to another island and became lost at an amusement park. There she met Mienshao, who became her martial-arts teacher. She studied under him more than five years before recounting the experience to Shen Qi 29.
Mienshao taught that martial arts could defeat enemies and save lives. Happiny took this as the foundation for a medical path different from her mother’s. When he advised that her evolved form was better suited to support work and Pokémon Centers, she interpreted his concern as encouragement to overcome a difficult path. Shen Qi later suspected that she had misunderstood him 29.
After crossing the sea to the Sevii Islands, Chansey became Pokémon Center intern 016. Her treatments could produce results, but her rough massage methods repeatedly distressed patients. A doctor reprimanded her after she treated a boy’s injured leg, and Nurse Joy eventually decided that conventional medical work was unsuitable for her 27 28.
Nurse Joy recommended her to the Luxury Resort as a massage therapist. Chansey instead spent much of her time cleaning the bathhouse, washing towels, and scrubbing tubs. The work offered stability but left her unhappy; she eventually departed despite owner Akiho’s wish to retain her. She subsequently trained in Ruins Valley, hoping to earn recognition for her medicine 16 28.
After becoming Shen Qi’s first Pokémon, she continues alternating household life with mountain training. His food supplies remove the difficulty of finding meals in the wilderness, allowing her to concentrate on training rather than losing weight during her expeditions. As her strength improves, she ventures farther into Ruins Valley than she could when they first met 40 110 119 340.
Appearance
As a Chansey, she has a nearly spherical pink body, standing a little over one meter tall. Shen Qi compares holding her to embracing an oversized, smooth, springy water balloon 6 10.
- Skin: Smooth and glossy 6.
- Limbs: Short legs and small, hot-dog-shaped hands; her arms cannot fully encircle Shen Qi when she hugs him 6 10.
- Belly pouch: Holds the large eggs she offers to others 6.
- Weight: Approximately 30–35 kilograms while riding in the Little Sheep 14.
- Expression: Frequently wears an innocent, sweet, slightly goofy smile 6 29.
- Later development: Her body feels springier as her strength increases. Well-provisioned mountain training also makes her plumper rather than thinner 133 340.
Upon evolving into Blissey, her spherical body expands from just over one meter across to approximately one and a half meters. Fleshy, feather-like structures appear around her waist, with small white wing-like structures behind her arms. Her familiar cry remains unchanged 439.
Personality
Chansey is friendly and unusually unafraid of people, approaching Shen Qi for a ride without hesitation. She communicates frankly, expresses herself well, and does not withdraw affection when discussing her setbacks. At his home, she cleans, prepares simple meals, and leaves eggs for him 6 13 20 21.
Her gentleness coexists with stubborn conviction. She treats disappointing results as evidence that she must train harder, even when Shen Qi explains her species’ limitations. During the psychic-storm rescue, she refuses to leave injured Pokémon behind and continues until her healing move begins consuming her own HP 21 23.
Recognition matters deeply to her. Nurse Joy’s praise finally validates years of effort, but Chansey still regards her desired “pinnacle” as far away. Her eagerness to treat patients can also overwhelm normal boundaries: Shen Qi’s exhaustion triggers an immediate, painful treatment session 15 28 29.
Despite her dedication to self-improvement, she can acknowledge areas in which effort alone does not make her suitable. She accepts that racing is neither her interest nor her strength, recalling Mienshao’s lesson that recognizing one’s limitations and concentrating on one’s strengths can also be courageous and wise. She enjoys accompanying Shen Qi and Lilligant in competitions primarily because they are together, rather than from a personal passion for racing 144 157.
Her wish to contribute to the household also creates insecurity. As Shen Qi, Lilligant, and Dodo become more capable, she worries that her support is replaceable and that healing and massage are her only useful talents. She conceals this distress behind her usual cheerfulness, then seeks indirect ways to help, including cooking and training Lopunny as a racing assistant 157 167 168 176 187 194 195.
Chansey is supportive of other Pokémon’s efforts to form bonds with Trainers. She agrees to help Buneary grow closer to Shen Qi, sincerely believing that rigorous training and physical strength are important forms of charm. Her eventual breakthrough in Protect likewise comes from happiness at being able to defend Shen Qi, rather than from a desire to increase her offensive strength 63 133 439.
Abilities & Skills
Tendon-Splitting Bone-Dislocating Technique
Chansey’s self-developed massage combines her medical ambitions with martial training. It relieves Shen Qi’s fatigue and leaves his body feeling loose and refreshed, but the pain can render him unconscious 16.
- She trains Double-Edge, Mega Kick, and Brick Break partly to refine this technique 27.
- Its intensity makes it unsuitable for ordinary clinical use; Shen Qi recognizes the risks to patients with fragile organs or tissues 27.
- After returning from mountain training, she treats Lilligant so abruptly that the patient has no opportunity to scream. About half an hour later, Chansey reports that Lilligant’s injuries are mostly healed 50.
- Shen Qi asks her to monitor injuries while he intensively practices Fire- and Rock-type acceleration techniques, making her medical support part of his training arrangements 73.
- She helps teach Buneary massage and assists her in treating Shen Qi 73 134.
- After the Winter Race, she gives Shen Qi a gentle massage that allows him to fall peacefully asleep despite his exhaustion. She presents this to Lopunny as an example of how to help an overworked Trainer rest 282.
- Her evolution does not eliminate her forceful treatment habits. As Blissey, she interrupts Shen Qi’s feigned-injury massage with Body Slam, Brick Break, and Bomb, leaving him unconscious until nightfall 498.
Dietary Therapy
Her enormous eggs are highly nutritious but have an overpowering, unpleasant flavor. An especially potent egg helps Shen Qi break through his difficulty sensing Normal-type energy 7 8.
- Repeated consumption contributes to Shen Qi’s improved stamina and sturdier physique 20 46.
- The energy-perception benefit is unusual to this individual Chansey, rather than an established property of the species’ eggs 7.
- She warns Shen Qi not to eat them too quickly because his body cannot absorb unlimited nutrition 20.
- Chansey considers her own perfected recipe delicious, despite other recipients’ nausea 23.
- Incorporating her own eggs into egg tarts preserves their overwhelming taste rather than producing a successful improvement. Mienshao explicitly tells her not to use them in the pastries 349.
Healing Moves
| Move | Recorded proficiency | Applications and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Egg Bomb | 69% 26 | Depicted in the early chapters as a Normal-type healing move. Stops bleeding and accelerates recovery, but excessive use begins consuming Chansey’s own HP. Its unpleasant sensory effects can nauseate recipients 23. |
| Heal Pulse | 6% 26 | Psychic-type healing learned during the Ruins Valley rescue. Initially unstable, but does not require sacrificing her own HP. She later uses it to treat Double-Edge recoil injuries 23 35. |
- Healing moves do not instantly repair broken bones, damaged organs, or other serious physical injuries; further treatment may still be necessary 23 35.
- During the psychic storm, Chansey feeds Shen Qi an egg to distract him from painful energy fluctuations 22.
- Later chapters separately introduce an offensive Egg Bomb as a newly acquired attack, despite the same English move name having appeared in the earlier healing descriptions 340 341.
Martial Arts
Chansey has trained physical attacks far beyond what Shen Qi expects from her species. Her natural strengths remain enormous HP reserves and high Special Defense, while her physical Attack is exceptionally poor before the mutation 21 27.
| Move | Recorded proficiency | Properties |
|---|---|---|
| Double-Edge | 51% 27 | Powerful Normal-type attack with substantial recoil; repeated boosted use strains both Chansey and the move’s pathways 35. |
| Mega Kick | 76% → 80% 27 109 | TM-taught Normal-type attack used to shatter rocks and break accumulated sediment. Later confirmed to have been learned from Mienshao 34 357. |
| Brick Break | 71% → 75% 27 109 | TM-taught Fighting-type chopping attack capable of breaking Light Screen and Reflect barriers. Learned from Mienshao 27 357. |
| Echoed Voice | Not stated | Special attack used to begin an exchange at medium to long range, demonstrating a departure from her earlier reliance on direct physical charges 270. |
| Egg Bomb — offensive form | Not stated | Hurls an egg formed from Normal-type energy for explosive physical damage. Listed with 100 power and 75 accuracy when it appears as a new move 340 341. |
| Body Slam | Not stated | Learned through Mienshao’s TM and subsequent training. A powerful, accurate Normal-type attack with a paralysis effect enhanced by Serene Grace 348 349 356 357. |
| Secret Power | Not stated | Learned with Dodo’s instruction. Deals damage in battle and can also help locate, construct, and stabilize a Secret Base 340 370. |
| Pound | Not stated | A basic Normal-type attack that lacks the forward movement provided by Tackle 400. |
- Move pathways become damaged through repeated use and must recover before the move can be used again 32 34.
- During the flood rescue, she alternates Double-Edge with Heal Pulse to keep recoil injuries within a range she believes she can treat 35.
- By Chapter 109, her mutation has also markedly improved physical Defense and increased Speed beyond ordinary expectations. Her Special Attack is comparatively low, while Special Defense remains among the species’ outstanding strengths 109.
- At level 43, her physical Attack is nearly 100. Shen Qi roughly compares this to a physical Attack base stat of seventy or eighty, rather than Chansey’s usual five 340 341.
- Mienshao recognizes that her Brick Break already exceeds the theoretical physical capabilities of an ordinary Chansey or its evolved form. Chansey herself attributes her progress to hard work and does not recognize how exceptional her body has become 345 348.
- She learns damaging moves much more readily than defensive or technical moves. Even with Shen Qi outlining pathways through highly proficient Energy Coordination, Protect remains inaccessible for an extended period 349 370.
- Extremely low movement speed remains a serious combat weakness. Shen Qi compensates by moving into position himself, summoning her nearby, and using his recall technique to reposition her 400.
Serene Grace and Defensive Skills
Serene Grace increases the likelihood that her attacks trigger their additional effects. Its interaction with Body Slam makes the paralysis effect especially useful. Although the game description frames the Ability as doubling effect chances, actual results depend on proficiency, the opponent, and battlefield execution rather than a fixed numerical probability 349 357.
- Protect: Initially resists repeated instruction from Shen Qi and Mienshao. She finally learns it while shielding Shen Qi from concealed weapons during the Tulip Squad pursuit 349 370 439.
- Her first Protect manifests as small, crooked hexagonal barriers. The weapons shatter them, but the barriers still stop the attacks 439.
- Immediately after evolving into Blissey, she advances toward Houndoom behind Protect and prepares Brick Break before Shen Qi recalls her 439.
- Shen Qi treats her as an attacker rather than following the conventional strategy of leaving Chansey unevolved with an Eviolite to maximize defensive durability 439.
Vehicle Support
| Move | Recorded proficiency | Effect on the Little Sheep |
|---|---|---|
| Defense Curl | 31% 26 | Hardens vehicle components, providing the durability needed for aggressive overclocking 50. |
| Helping Hand | 16% 26 | Supplies brief power boosts, particularly useful when accelerating out of corners 11 50. |
| Work Up | 45% 26 | Raises Attack and Special Attack, supporting vehicle performance and Chansey’s own attacks 34 38 50. |
- Her taught moves initially lead Shen Qi to wonder whether she already has a Trainer; she confirms that she does not 11 16.
- Her support cannot overcome the Little Sheep’s poor underlying specifications by itself, and she has no knowledge of vehicle modifications 50.
- Her buffs naturally arrive as forceful initial surges that taper quickly, unlike Lilligant’s steadier Growth. Shen Qi uses Energy Coordination to moderate their delivery instead of requiring Chansey to change her established habits 79.
- While inside a Poké Ball rack, she cannot see the road. She senses the Skill Slot through Shen Qi and depends on his commands for precise timing 79.
- Their coordinated plan uses Helping Hand and Work Up for the opening acceleration, with Chansey later maintaining buffs or switching to healing and Defense Curl according to Lilligant’s driving demands 79.
- She lacks the driving experience and independent judgment needed to warn Lilligant about hazards such as rollover risks. This limits her suitability as Lilligant’s copilot despite her useful moves 194.
- Shen Qi later packages her Helping Hand through Alliance Attack, holding the boost until a tactically useful moment. During a Preliminary, its delayed release lets the Little Sheep retake two lost positions 254.
- She continues providing Helping Hand and Work Up in later qualifying races alongside Lilligant’s support 415.
Cooking and Soft Strength
Chansey initially manages simple home-style dishes and ordinary farm ingredients, but more varied ingredients expose weaknesses in her cooking. Her unusual taste preferences, poor heat control, and limited knife work make refinement difficult 20 144 190.
- Enters Celadon City’s Pokémon Cooking Challenge to practice healthy everyday meals for Shen Qi. Florges offers to partner with her and help her learn 168.
- Florges observes that she uses too much force, making careful work such as cooking harder. Chansey’s tendency to interpret every problem as a need for greater exertion becomes central to the “Crazy Quack-Soft Strength” expansion storyline 170.
- Studies under Shuckle and learns pastry-making from Florges 283.
- Finds a practical strength in mixing and kneading dough. Her stamina and strength produce firm, resilient noodles even before she masters finer technique 190.
- Uses an Old Dough Starter whose special yeast gives her dough a fruity fragrance 190.
- Her improved dough is tasty, but her punching-bag-like kneading destroys a wooden table and requires the stone platform at home 341.
- By her reunion with Mienshao, she can prepare meat buns and ordinary egg tarts, though the tarts remain somewhat dry. Her attempt to improve them with her own eggs is unsuccessful 349.
Communication and Practical Skills
- Communicates mentally with Shen Qi through the game interface after he activates Script Detector 11.
- Detects powerful Psychic-type energy near Ruins Valley, though she cannot identify its source 22.
- Helps load and unload delivery cargo, substantially reducing Shen Qi’s workload 21 22.
- Explains the flood situation to Pelipper and Luvdisc without prompting 35.
- Dries the sheltered Wingull chicks with a towel 32.
- Possesses keen senses developed through martial training in forests and mountains, helping her locate Buneary near Shen Qi’s home 61 62.
- Knows Ruins Valley’s trails and guides Shen Qi and Lilligant during their investigation of Team Rocket and Porygon 119 120.
- Secretly teaches Lopunny racing-support moves, including Work Up, allowing her to contribute indirectly by preparing a more suitable partner for Lilligant 194 195.
Equipment / Items
- Poké Ball — Received when she formally accepts Shen Qi as her Trainer. Neither initially knows how to use it; they spend more than ten minutes learning together 39.
- Pokémon food — Shen Qi buys supplies for her mountain training, making this her first such expedition with provisions 40.
- Training backpack — Carries the rations Shen Qi prepares for later wilderness expeditions 110.
- Old Dough Starter — Used in her improved dough recipes and later taken into Ruins Valley alongside her training provisions 190 241.
- Body Slam TM — A gift from Mienshao, chosen because her extraordinary physical growth and Serene Grace make the move especially suitable for her 348 349.
Relationships
- Shen Qi — Her first Trainer. His gratitude for her egg gives her an appreciative recipient, and their shared rescues develop into a formal partnership 10 16 35 39 40. She later worries about becoming unnecessary as his abilities improve, but works to support him through cooking, healing, and teaching Lopunny. Her desire to protect him ultimately awakens Protect and triggers her evolution into Blissey 167 168 194 195 439.
- Mienshao — Her childhood martial-arts master and the inspiration for her unconventional medicine. Shen Qi suspects she misunderstood the intended lesson 29. They reunite near Viridian City, where Mienshao recognizes her extraordinary growth, gives her a Body Slam TM, and helps her practice defensive moves. She affectionately calls him “Master Weasel” 344 345 348 349.
- Chansey mother — Raised her on an offshore island and took her traveling aboard Wailord. Chansey describes her own medicine as a different path from her mother’s 29.
- Nurse Joy — Former internship supervisor who redirects her toward resort work, then later recognizes her as an excellent doctor after the Ruins Valley rescue 27 28.
- Akiho — Former employer at the Luxury Resort; wanted Chansey to remain when she chose to leave 28.
- Lilligant — Initially mistakes Chansey’s hug with Shen Qi for a romantic encounter. Chansey helps explain the misunderstanding, later encourages Shen Qi to bring Lilligant home, and treats her injuries 10 14 40 50. Lilligant becomes reluctant to part with her during later mountain training and eventually thanks her with a hug for preparing Lopunny as a racing partner 110 194.
- Buneary / Lopunny — A Pokémon she helped rescue during the psychic storm. Chansey agrees to help her approach Shen Qi, teaches her martial training and massage, and later trains her racing-support skills in secret. Lopunny admires her as “Egg Master” and remains deeply grateful after evolving 62 63 73 134 157 194 195.
- Florges — Cooking partner and teacher who helps her pursue healthy home cooking and pastry-making. Florges’s advice about excessive force contributes to the “Soft Strength” storyline. Chansey considers her exceptionally noble and rejects Shen Qi’s suspicion that she enjoys others’ suffering 168 170 207 283.
- Shuckle — A teacher she studies under before demonstrating her improved dough-making skills 283.
- Dodo / Porygon — Fellow member of Shen Qi’s household. His growing usefulness initially contributes to her worries about her own role, but he later helps her learn Secret Power 176 370.

- Continues her medical role after evolution, including an excessively forceful treatment when Shen Qi pretends to be injured 498.
Emotional Storyline: “Crazy Quack”
The storyline is rated Hard. Its keywords identify the painful massage technique, unique dietary therapy, and arduous training 15.
| Completion | Development |
|---|---|
| 16% | Recorded after her early meetings with Shen Qi 15. |
| 21% → 25% | Rises through her massage and dietary treatment 16. |
| 28% | Recorded after Shen Qi eats another egg 17. |
| 46% | Recorded before the formal partnership; fighting together during the flood has also contributed 39. |
| 51% | Reached after confirming their bond and preparing for her departure 40. |
| 95% | Already reached before Shen Qi leaves for Vermilion City’s Regular Race 107. |
| 100% | Completed after he eats her eggs during the trip and receives a thorough massage upon returning. Progress converts to Compatibility, detailed Pokémon data becomes accessible, and final rewards begin calculating 107. |
- Initially, kind words alone do not advance the storyline; Shen Qi must accept her treatments and eggs 16 19 22.
- Shared action later provides another route to progress. Formalizing their bond produces a five-percentage-point increase without another treatment 39 40.
- Full storyline completion is not required for her to enter a Poké Ball 40.
- At completion, Shen Qi retrospectively describes eggs and massages as the principal requirements, with entering the Poké Ball providing a small exception. This later account emphasizes the difficulty of her route despite her being his first captured Pokémon 107.
Expansion Storyline: “Crazy Quack-Soft Strength”
Shen Qi accepts Chansey’s expansion storyline after her cooking efforts reveal a new developmental problem. He initially considers whether “Soft Strength” might involve a martial principle of balancing hardness and softness, but cannot confirm whether its scope is cooking, combat, or both 170.
- Florges’s observation that Chansey tries too hard provides an important clue: forceful effort alone is poorly suited to tasks requiring care and fine control 170.
- Shen Qi checks her emotional condition through conversation. Her Mental Health Index returns to 79%, helping him distinguish the storyline from a racing-related crisis 170.
- Her concern about household usefulness is partly relieved when Lopunny becomes a suitable racing partner for Lilligant. Shen Qi observes her Mental Health Index rise from 75% to 98% and traces the improvement to her successful mentorship 194.
- Her inability to learn Protect, despite readily acquiring more damaging moves, remains an obstacle that Shen Qi associates with the unfinished expansion storyline 341 349 370.
- She eventually breaks through that defensive-learning barrier while protecting Shen Qi and evolves into Blissey, though the available account does not state a completion percentage for the expansion at that moment 439.
