Background / History

Training in the Sevii Islands

Shan Sheng's older sister assigned him to visit the seven Sevii Islands and defeat their drivers before returning to the Perilla Racing Team. The trip was intended to develop his skills and help him advance beyond his reserve position 12 38.

His early practice on Island 6 exposed his unfamiliarity with its mountain roads. Lilligant, racing under the identity of “Tsareena,” overtook him in her pink Class B car. Shortly afterward, Shen Qi's Class D Little Sheep also passed him, using Pokémon-assisted acceleration that Shan Sheng initially considered impossible for a delivery vehicle. He stopped and called his sister after each defeat 12.

Once he learned Island 6's roads and some of Island 5's routes, Shan Sheng began winning repeatedly. Local accounts described him as having almost no rivals on either island, with Tsareena and the unidentified Little Sheep driver remaining his principal targets 37 42.

He already held T3 certification during this training period, although Shen Qi later regarded him as a marginal competitor at that level. When Shen Qi questioned how someone of Shan Sheng's ability had qualified, Xia Yang explained that long-time racers could benefit from seasons with unusually weak competition and favorable luck 259.

Searching for the Little Sheep

Shan Sheng followed Shen Qi during a heavily loaded delivery, recognizing his clean racing line and steady pace but dismissing him as weaker than the driver he remembered. Shen Qi refused to race because of his valuable cargo 38.

After examining unusually deep tire marks and comparing their spacing, Shan Sheng concluded that the delivery vehicle had been carrying enough weight to conceal its true performance. He inferred that its young driver was a skilled Trainer with multiple Pokémon and asked his sister to help investigate Island 6's registered Trainers 39.

Car Badge Duel with Tsareena

Unable to find Tsareena on the roads, Shan Sheng posted a challenge in the Island 6 racing community on the Sevii Islands forum. She accepted, and a public race was arranged on Trail Mountain 46 47.

Before the start, he proposed a Car Badge Duel: the loser would surrender their car's emblem and could not replace it for six months unless they won it back. Lilligant refused because her car was a keepsake from her former Trainer, whom she believed to be dead. Shan Sheng's subsequent claim to know the car's origins led her to believe that he could expose her painful past, and she agreed to the wager on the condition that he tell no one about her car. He appeared briefly puzzled by her request but enthusiastically proceeded with the race 47 48 49 50 68.

During the race, Shan Sheng blocked her outside line before a turn, forcing her to slow down. Although she gained ground through a plant-covered section, she struggled under psychological pressure and later made a costly mistake. Shan Sheng finished thirty meters ahead and removed her emblem with Nidorino's assistance 48.

Shen Qi initially interpreted the incident as deliberate blackmail. After his own race against Shan Sheng, however, he learned that Shan Sheng had merely recognized the car as a discontinued Class B Flower Crown model manufactured by Crown Group in Crown City. Shan Sheng had not known Lilligant's personal history; the apparent threat had been a misunderstanding 49 50 68.

Challenge to Shen Qi

Shan Sheng subsequently confronted Shen Qi and acknowledged that he had overlooked the Little Sheep's heavy cargo. He enthusiastically accepted another emblem showdown, agreeing to return Tsareena's emblem if Shen Qi won 49.

Shen Qi's van had lost its own emblem through ordinary wear, so Shan Sheng allowed him to buy a cheap replacement for the wager. The emblem's value did not interest him; recovering Tsareena's badge would give Shen Qi a reason to race seriously. By Chapter 50, Shen Qi was preparing modifications for the Little Sheep 49 50.

The duel was scheduled for eleven at night on a Trail Mountain course. Even while Shen Qi still believed Shan Sheng had blackmailed Lilligant, he acknowledged that Shan Sheng had chosen a course on Shen Qi's home island rather than seeking an advantage through unfamiliar terrain 63.

Shan Sheng arrived without his sister or teammates, expecting the race to provide a ceremonial conclusion to his earlier loss. The Little Sheep's extensive modifications surprised him, but he considered its underlying platform an inefficient choice for such an investment 65.

At the start, Shan Sheng used Nidorina's Rivalry Ability and rapid, stable Pokémon buffs to take an early lead. Shen Qi countered with Chansey's Helping Hand, overtaking him on the short opening straight and entering the first corner ahead. Nidorina also knew Helping Hand, allowing Shan Sheng to answer with powerful acceleration out of corners 65 66.

Late in the race, Shan Sheng was shocked by the Little Sheep's sudden engine-performance change and its transition to slick tires, interpreting both as racing-specific Style Techniques. Although he remained determined to win, his hesitation over defending the final key section allowed Shen Qi to pass. Shan Sheng lost the duel, openly acknowledged Shen Qi's victory, and returned Tsareena's emblem as agreed 67.

Afterward, he expressed admiration for Shen Qi's apparent dedication to developing racing techniques and invited him to join the Perilla Racing Team. He also explained their original encounter, accepting that Shen Qi had been concentrating too closely on chasing Tsareena to remember passing him 67 68.

Recruitment Efforts and the Fuchsia City Regular Race

Shen Qi declined Shan Sheng's recruitment offer because the five-year contract would restrict his freedom and prevent him from using the Little Sheep 77.

When they met again at the Fuchsia City Regular Race, Shan Sheng renewed the offer after learning that financial limitations had left Shen Qi working as Tsareena's assistant rather than driving himself. Through his influence, the proposed annual pay had increased from 100,000 b to 150,000 b, with the team also providing a car. Shen Qi again refused the five-year commitment 152.

By this time, the Perilla Racing Team had approved Shan Sheng's participation in that year's T3 races. Confident in his progress through professional training, he promised to demonstrate his improvement. He drew fourth on the starting grid, immediately ahead of Janine, whose past racing performances made him uneasy 152.

During the race, Shan Sheng held third place and defended against Maractus while considering whether she could be recruited as another driver's Pokémon. Rose Champagne then overtook him despite his attempted defense. When Flower Crown caught up, he recognized that Tsareena was driving and that her skills had improved considerably. He used his position to occupy the best cornering line and resist her challenge 153.

Following Shen Qi and Lilligant's victory, Shan Sheng invited Shen Qi to a drink stall and treated him to juice and food. He frankly admitted that he could no longer defeat their partnership even at full effort, but argued that Shen Qi's own potential was being wasted in a purely supporting role. He distinguished Lilligant's technically sound, conventional driving from Shen Qi's freer, less predictable style, which he believed had greater promise in higher-level competition 156 157.

During this conversation, Shan Sheng revealed his family's ownership and leadership of the Perilla Racing Team. He acknowledged that his own talents lay more in management than competition and estimated that, without a breakthrough in his Pokémon, he might eventually scrape into T2 but would not progress much further 157.

His advice became one of the influences behind Shen Qi and Lilligant choosing to develop as Drivers on separate paths. Chansey also overheard the conversation and began considering how to support the household indirectly, later helping train Lopunny 159 194 250.

Winter Race and Team Recruitment

Shan Sheng was listed among the entrants in the Regular Race Janine organized after receiving a forged challenge attributed to Shen Qi 226.

For the Winter Race, he traveled with Ayumi and other Perilla Racing Team competitors. While staying at the same hotel as Shen Qi, he arranged to have dinner with him and watch the preliminary group announcements. He took satisfaction in Shen Qi's subsequent progress as an independent Driver, regarding it as confirmation of his earlier advice 250.

During the draw, Shan Sheng repeatedly hoped not to face his sister in the first round and celebrated when they received different groups. Ayumi warned that poor results might leave him better suited to becoming an agent. He also discussed the field with Shen Qi, reacting strongly to Ayaka's participation and judging Meng Ai unlikely to threaten Shen Qi's advancement 250 251.

Shan Sheng advanced from the first preliminary round, with Shen Qi noting that he had improved since his Island 6 training. He was eliminated in the second round. Ayumi ultimately placed seventh in the Finals 259 269 375.

After his elimination, Shan Sheng continued exchanging information with Shen Qi. He reported recruiting Duowu for the Perilla Racing Team and sent information about Ayaka's planned compression-ignition engine for the third round at Maiden's Gorge 269.

Spring Race

In the following Spring Race, Shan Sheng drew a group containing eight T2 Drivers. Shen Qi regarded the draw as disastrous and called to tease him. Shan Sheng initially let Nidorino and Nidorina listen to the call, repeating a tactic he had used during the Winter Race. After Shen Qi reassured and praised the Pokémon, Shan Sheng took the phone back and jokingly called him his best friend 375 376.

Appearance

Shan Sheng has a fashionable, rock-singer-like appearance 38.

  • Short, blond hair held back by a headband 38.
  • Trendy clothing 38.
  • A waist pouch carrying additional Poké Balls 39.
  • Wears a small suit during his Winter Race meeting with Shen Qi and Ayumi in Saffron City's night market 250.

Personality

Shan Sheng is ambitious and intensely competitive. Being overtaken by an inexpensive Little Sheep wounds his pride, but he remains determined to finish his training assignment. His dismissive remarks about Island 6 and Class D vehicles contrast with his willingness to acknowledge Shen Qi's clean driving and composure 12 38.

His enthusiasm for racing is genuine: he accepts a financially lopsided wager because he wants Shen Qi's full effort, not a valuable trophy. Shen Qi initially regards him as a sincere-looking racer without scruples because he believes Shan Sheng deliberately exploited Lilligant's past to secure a badge wager. This judgment is later overturned when Shan Sheng's supposed knowledge proves to concern only the car's manufacturer and model. His continued use of “Tsareena” had not concealed knowledge of her private history 49 50 68.

He can underestimate opponents, treating the duel with the Little Sheep as a foregone conclusion before learning about its modifications and unexpected capabilities. Nevertheless, even when shocked by Shen Qi's apparent Style Techniques, he retains his fighting spirit. After losing, he admits defeat without excuses and honors the wager 65 67.

Shan Sheng is unusually candid about both others' strengths and his own limitations. He openly tells Shen Qi that he cannot beat the improved Tsareena partnership and recognizes that his aptitude for running a racing team exceeds his talent behind the wheel 157.

His management instincts are strong enough to distract him during competition. Rather than merely studying a formidable opponent's tactics, he habitually considers whether that opponent could be recruited. Ayumi has repeatedly criticized this tendency 153.

His later friendship with Shen Qi includes mutual teasing, racing discussions, and practical assistance. His habit of handing teasing phone calls to Nidorino and Nidorina allows him to avoid the initial mockery before returning to the conversation 269 376.

Abilities & Skills

Mountain-Road Racing

  • Route learning: Overcomes several early losses by familiarizing himself with local roads, then wins repeatedly against Island 5 and Island 6 racers 37.
  • Racing-line control: Blocks Lilligant's outside approach before a turn, preventing her from using her late-braking advantage 48.
  • Risk management: Refuses to apply a major power boost at an unfamiliar blind corner's apex, waiting until the car has exited the bend 12.
  • Professional training: Receives structured training through the Perilla Racing Team and later earns the team's approval to enter that year's T3 races 53 152.
  • Defensive driving: Uses his lead to occupy the preferred cornering line against Flower Crown. Against Rose Champagne, he considers successive legal blocking attempts but cannot match its aggressive corner-entry speed 153.
  • Limitations: Initially loses to drivers with superior course knowledge; slows on the obstructed, plant-covered section where Lilligant feels more comfortable 12 48.
  • Competitive ceiling: Acknowledges that his own talent might carry him only as far as barely attaining T2 after several years, unless his Pokémon achieve a significant breakthrough 157.

Pokémon-Assisted Vehicle Performance

  • Commands Nidorino's Hone Claws to improve his car's performance 12.
  • Recognizes that the Little Sheep combines defensive reinforcement with power boosts to withstand mechanical strain 12.
  • Correctly identifies Helping Hand as the source of its temporary fifty-percent power increase 12.
  • Has an advantage over solo-driving Lilligant because a Pokémon partner can manage moves while he concentrates on driving 45 48.
  • Nidorina's Helping Hand: Uses the same burst-acceleration move as Shen Qi's team during their Car Badge Duel, combining it with his stronger car and Rivalry advantage 66.
  • Rivalry management: Switches between Nidorino and Nidorina before the start to prepare a same-gender matchup. Nidorina's Rivalry provides an advantage against the female Pokémon supporting his opponents 65 153.
  • Fast, stable support: His Pokémon's rapid and steady buffs impress Chansey, who recognizes the extensive practice behind them 65.
  • Dependence on Pokémon support: As of the Fuchsia City Regular Race, he knows no Trainer Skills. He acknowledges Maractus's superior solo-driving capability, while relying on his Pokémon partner to retain an advantage against her unsupported car 153.

Observation and Communication

  • Assesses another driver's racing line, pace, and response to pursuit 38.
  • Uses tire-track depth, wheel spacing, and recent traffic to identify the heavily loaded Little Sheep 39.
  • Cannot understand Pokémon speech directly; a Pidgey translates his pre-race conversation with Lilligant 47 48.
  • Recognizes Lilligant's discontinued Flower Crown model and knows its manufacturer and production origin, though not her personal history 68.
  • Identifies the distinction between Lilligant's conventional technical strengths and Shen Qi's unpredictable, adaptable racing style, offering advice that helps Shen Qi reconsider his supporting role 157 250.

Team Management and Recruitment

  • Talent scouting: Recognizes Shen Qi's potential after their duel and repeatedly attempts to recruit him into the Perilla Racing Team 67 68 152.
  • Negotiation: Uses his influence to raise Shen Qi's proposed annual trainee pay from 100,000 b to 150,000 b, with a team-provided car 152.
  • Operational judgment: Naturally evaluates competitors from a team-management perspective. His family considers his aptitude for management and operations greater than his competitive ability 153 157.
  • Recruitment result: Recruits Duowu for the Perilla Racing Team during the Winter Race period 269.
  • Information sharing: Supplies Shen Qi with intelligence about Ayaka's planned engine technology before the Winter Race's third round 269.

  • Tsareena's car emblem — Taken after winning their Car Badge Duel; returned to Shen Qi after Shan Sheng loses their subsequent wager 48 49 67.

Relationships

  • Ayumi / Older sister — Sets his Sevii Islands training assignment. He repeatedly calls her for reassurance and assistance; she doubts his account of the extraordinary Little Sheep and later declines to watch his race with Shen Qi. She is the current leader of the Perilla Racing Team, criticizes his racing distractions, and suggests that poor results could leave him better suited to working as an agent. Despite their teasing, he is anxious to avoid facing her in the Winter Race's opening round 12 38 39 49 153 250 251.
  • Father — Chairman of the Perilla Racing Team. Shan Sheng explains that either he or Ayumi might eventually take over leadership, helping account for his interest in operations 157.
  • Nidorino — Pokémon partner who boosts his car with Hone Claws and helps remove Lilligant's emblem. Nidorino shares his excitement about the next showdown and later joins Nidorina in receiving Shen Qi's teasing phone calls 12 48 49 376.
  • Nidorina — Racing partner who uses Helping Hand and Rivalry to enhance his car's performance. She performs strongly in the duel with Shen Qi and remains proud and energetic after their loss. She also supports him during the Fuchsia City Regular Race 65 66 68 153.
  • Lilligant / “Tsareena” — Rival who initially overtakes him. He later wins her emblem in a Car Badge Duel that she accepts because she mistakenly believes he knows her private history. He actually recognizes only her car's model and manufacturer. In later competition, he acknowledges that her driving has improved so much that he cannot defeat her partnership with Shen Qi at full effort 12 47 48 68 157.
  • Shen Qi — Initially the Little Sheep driver he seeks to defeat. After losing their emblem wager, Shan Sheng recognizes his potential, repeatedly tries to recruit him, and offers candid advice about pursuing his own driving career. Their relationship develops into a friendship involving shared meals, racing information, mutual teasing, and encouragement 38 39 49 67 68 152 157 250 269 376.
  • Maractus — Competitor whose solo driving and comprehensive buffs impress him. He considers recruiting her as another driver's Pokémon because the Perilla Racing Team does not train Pokémon Drivers, although no recruitment occurs in the described encounter 153.
  • Duowu — Driver recruited by Shan Sheng for the Perilla Racing Team during the Winter Race period 269.
