Shrek Academy, inner court.
Under the radiance of the Golden Ancient Tree, the hazy eyes of a dull-witted child gradually cleared, and a suddenly very manly smile appeared on his tender, round face.
"Ee-ya... ee-yaya!" (Kids, I'm alive!) The child joyfully declared his rebirth, but unfortunately, his throat had yet to develop enough for him to produce complete syllables.
Yes, this dude wasn't a local. He was a baby from another world who had just finished his revival match and been reborn on the Douluo Continent.
Not long ago, from his perspective, he had just passed his driving test and was happily taking a car out for a spin when a king of the road slammed into him head-on, sending him off on the spot. After dying, he had somehow ended up in a dueling arena, where they said he had to fight a revival match.
Then a prick in outrageously flashy clothes appeared before him, holding a fish fork and wearing an expression of Pure and Spotless, radiant righteousness, and towering grandeur.
He had thought this would be an incredibly grueling revival match, but all he did was reach out, and that glittering golden fish fork shattered into crumbs. Another casual slap, and Pure and Spotless became a mosaic splattered across the floor.
"Am I really that badass?"
Only when the announcement of his victory sounded did he realize he had actually won the revival match.
"Wait, was this dude made of paper? A hydrogen man, maybe?" While rejoicing over his victory, he began picking his revival match reward.
Naturally, revival meant being reborn in the world of the opponent he had defeated, and he knew that world well. The Douluo Continent! The guy with the fish fork had looked familiar, and sure enough, he really was God King Tang.
It was just that this God King Tang seemed a little pathetic in terms of strength.
The revival match reward let him choose any one of the defeated opponent's abilities as his starting trait. Originally, he had wanted the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record. If it hadn't been gutted, that thing would indeed make a pretty good cheat. But when he noticed there were more pages of rewards, he abandoned the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record.
After weighing his options, he chose the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger!
"The strongest martial souls on the Douluo Continent are divine martial souls, and the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger can definitely stand shoulder to shoulder with the Six-Winged Angel! Then I'll choose the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger, vindicate divine martial souls, and show Qian Renxue what a real divine martial soul is!"
Dark Demon Evil God Tiger!
"Rebirth, activate!"
[Transmigrating to the Douluo Continent · Peerless Tang Sect!]
"Wait, Peerless Tang Sect?!"
The dumbass's vision went black, and his journey to another world began.
"My name is Ye Qing. I'm a baby transmigrator, a boss who's already crashed." Ye Qing gazed forlornly at Sea God Lake before him, his expression extraordinarily complicated.
For winning the revival match, he had chosen the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger as his reward. He had thought he would transmigrate to the Douluo I era and use his divine martial soul to beat the crap out of that punk, but he hadn't expected to land in the wrong era.
Worse, he had picked the wrong reward!
"I'm screwed. Won't they label me an Evil Soul Master the moment I awaken and hang me from a lamppost for everyone to see?"
His current identity was pretty interesting, too: he was the grandson of some Sea God Pavilion Senior Elder who had never appeared in the story.
For some unknown reason, though, something had been wrong with the original child ever since birth. Ordinary children on the Douluo Continent could already go catch crickets at two, but this poor kid was two and still couldn't speak.
The Senior Elder was frantic. If Ye Qing remained this dim-witted forever, their Ye family line would end!
So he sought help all over Shrek Academy.
After an examination by Mu En, the current Sea God Pavilion Master, the unfortunate child was finally diagnosed with a congenitally incomplete soul.
According to Mu En, a congenitally incomplete soul simply couldn't be healed through outside intervention. They could only wait and see whether it would recover on its own.
After winning his revival match, Ye Qing had transmigrated into the current Ye Qing. In effect, he had merged with the boy's incomplete soul and made his body whole. Not only had this turned his soul into that of a Douluo native, but it didn't even count as body possession.
"Ah, I'll take it one step at a time. If nothing works, I'll just have to crash right out of the gate." His scalp prickling, Ye Qing rolled all over the ground. There was nothing else he could do; his arms and legs still had no strength, or he would have liked to elbow himself.
Of all the things you could have picked, you just had to choose a hell-mode start!
Just then, an old geezer quietly appeared behind Ye Qing and stared, dumbstruck, as he crawled around on the ground with perfectly coordinated movements.
Before this, Ye Qing's soul had been incomplete. Forget walking-even his crawling had been shaky and unsteady. Calling his way of moving "wriggling across the ground" would have been entirely reasonable.
This old geezer was, naturally, Ye Qing's great-grandfather, the Titled elder who held a seat in the Sea God Pavilion. His name was Ye Feng, his martial soul was the Shadow Tiger, and he was a rank ninety-four agility-attack-type Titled Douluo with a soul ring configuration of two yellow, two purple, and five black rings.
"Heavens, Lord Sea God has worked a miracle!" Ye Feng nearly wept with joy.
Ye Feng's son had passed away, and his grandson had died fighting Evil Soul Masters during a Shrek Inspection Corps mission. His great-grandson Ye Qing was unquestionably the sole surviving seedling of his Ye family line. When Ye Qing had been diagnosed with a congenitally incomplete soul, the old geezer had felt as though the sky itself had collapsed.
Out of appreciation for Ye Feng's "tireless service, great merit, and outstanding contributions" to Shrek, Mu En had allowed Ye Qing to play near the Golden Tree. Bathing in its radiance would give his soul a better chance of healing.
Ye Feng had only been treating a dead horse as though it were still alive, making one last desperate attempt. Yet he had merely gone to the Sea God Pavilion to handle some academy affairs, and when he returned a moment later, Ye Qing was back to normal.
If this wasn't a miracle from Lord Sea God, what else could it be?
Ye Feng's startled cry also gave Ye Qing, who was crawling around on the ground, a fright. The language of the Douluo Continent was clearly different from the one on that little blue planet.
People here didn't speak Chinese.
Unable to understand a word of Douluo speech, he simply stared blankly at an old geezer who was crying and laughing, putting on a whole performance right there.
Only later did he learn that this was the sole relative Ye Qing's body had left on the Douluo Continent.
Two and a half years later.
On the shore of Sea God Lake, Ye Qing, as delicate as a porcelain doll, sat on a rock with a fishing rod in hand, fishing in the lake.
Beside him, an old man whose face had enough wrinkles to trap a mosquito to death sat in a wheelchair, fishing with the same kind of rod as Ye Qing.
"Say, Grandpa, you come fishing here with me every day. Don't you have anything else to do?" Ye Qing jerked his rod upward, and a plump topmouth culter landed on the bank with a smack.
"Hehe, I'm old! These days, I just enjoy doing things that nurture the body and soothe the mind!" The old man chuckled and casually flicked his rod. Despite making no unnecessary movements, he sent his fish landing precisely in the fish bucket. With another casual flick, the obedient hook baited itself and dropped back into the lake.
Holy shit, he's cheating! With a sour expression, Ye Qing tossed the culter he had just unhooked into his bucket, then scurried over to the lakeside to wash his hands.
Who uses soul power just to fish? And you call yourself a Limit Douluo!
How could a normal person have such powerful control?
Mu En's movements flowed like clouds and water, all in one seamless sequence, without him even shifting his backside in his wheelchair. It was practically cheating.
At some point, this Sea God Pavilion Master had spotted Ye Qing fishing and, on a whim, joined him for the day. After that, he had taken a liking to the activity. Whenever Ye Qing appeared by the lake with his fishing rod, Mu En's steadfast presence was guaranteed to be there.
The old man couldn't even be bothered to visit the new students' dormitory building anymore. These days, he did nothing but fish and drink tea.
