Background / History
Emei origins
Deng Yin was a disciple of Chu Sanzi, the junior brother of True Person Long Eyebrow, and a former Vice Sect Master of Emei. He had coveted the sect leadership and bitterly watched Chu Sanzi pass its authority token, the Yin-Yang Five Clouds Jade Tablets, to Long Eyebrow instead 612 640.
In his youth, Deng Yin and Li Jingxu were outstanding Xuanmen cultivators from Shu. They traveled together, fought demons, and performed chivalrous deeds before Deng Yin turned to the demonic path. Li Jingxu later became one of the principal figures responsible for his imprisonment 624.
After his expulsion from Emei, Deng Yin exterminated several sects to master Demonlight Blood Flame. Long Eyebrow eventually sealed him in a cavern beneath the Western Sea, where numerous restrictions and the weight of the sea kept him imprisoned for centuries 170 491.
Becoming Blood God Child
His escape became possible when a previously unknown earthly baleful intent formed directly beneath his prison. This exceedingly filthy, supremely yin Gui Water energy filled the cavern and provided a substitute for the primordial blood sea required by the Blood God Scripture 491.
Deng Yin flayed himself and dissolved his sinews, bones, organs, apertures, nascent soul, golden core, and other substantial components. Preserving his primordial spirit through the agony, he condensed his vital essence and energy into a blood shadow. After mastering Blood Shadow Divine Light, he adopted the name Blood God Child and slipped through the prison’s restrictions without damaging them 491 492.
The destruction of Western Kunlun
Rather than immediately attack Emei, Blood God Child spent decades preparing a territorial foundation. He infected the Western Sea’s veins, extended his influence toward Western Kunlun, and possessed its Sect Master. Control of the sect’s Mountain-Guarding Grand Array allowed him to spread blood baleful intent through the mountain range 492.
He cultivated corrupt insiders and ordered them to oppress the local population. His followers then recruited gifted youths from those embittered communities, encouraging them to seek revenge through demonic cultivation. These recruits trained secretly in blood caverns beneath the mountain for twenty or thirty years 492.
On New Year’s Day in Ming year 428, his hidden disciples and corrupted Western Kunlun cultivators launched their massacre. The sect’s apparently sudden destruction was the culmination of this long infiltration 492.
Appearance
Blood God Child presents a handsome, composed human appearance despite his blood-shadow nature 631 645.
- Tall and thin, usually dressed in a blood-red robe 631.
- Swordlike eyebrows and phoenix eyes 631.
- Two dragon-whisker strands of hair hanging before his forehead 631.
- A distinctive vertical blood-red mark between his brows 631.
- Can abandon his human outline entirely, becoming bloodlight, liquid blood, or an enormous Asura 649 652.
Personality
Blood God Child is patient, calculating, and willing to conceal overwhelming strength. During the first righteous siege of Western Kunlun, he treated the fighting as a means of selecting stronger disciples, dismissing casualties because replacements could always be recruited. His restrained public behavior also concealed his ongoing expansion into the mountain and sea 114 492.
His cruelty is often deliberate rather than impulsive. He expected a subordinate sent to possess Cheng Xinzhan to die regardless of the outcome, and later tortured and killed Xun Lanyin specifically to savor Qi Shuming’s helpless grief. He also regarded killing as a way to acclimate Li Yingqiong to demonic cultivation 439 619 640.
Despite his pride, he recognizes exceptional opponents. He sincerely admires Cheng Xinzhan’s abilities and moral conviction, and regards Cheng and Li Jingxu as his only equals on land in talent, opportunities, schemes, and methods. He can concede a disadvantage and retreat without abandoning his polished bearing, although that composure finally collapses when his last resources fail 624 631 633 654.
Abilities & Skills
Blood Shadow Divine Light
His defining demonic art transforms the body into innate blood radiance and enables possession and consumption of other cultivators 491 492.
- Infiltration: Passes through acquired restrictions without leaving damage. This enabled his escape and his infiltration of Western Kunlun and Juqü Mountain 492 642.
- Possession: Occupies a victim’s meridians and apertures, adhering to their essence blood and immobilizing the body 439.
- Consumption: Devours flesh and magical power, allowing him to grow stronger through powerful victims 645 646.
- Transmission: Apart from Blood God Child, only the Blood-Robed Three Boys were known to have mastered it 439 492.
- Counters: Separate barriers formed from innate qi or innate treasures can prevent infiltration. A protected inner world can trap its wielder, as Wusaqi discovered inside Cheng Xinzhan 439 492.
Blood Sea Domain
The Blood Sea is simultaneously his domain, essence blood, and an extension of his body. Its resources sustain his techniques and amplify his treasures while corroding opposing weapons 634 646.
- Regeneration: Blood Shadow Rebirth Divine Art reconstructs severe bodily damage from the sea 634.
- Shared restoration: Can graft another person’s aura onto the sea, allowing bodily reconstruction; Li Yingqiong benefits from this ability 637.
- Controlled entry: Can admit enemies deliberately and then seal the sea against outside intervention 646.
- Mobility: Converted his mountain-and-sea foundation into a transportable blood sea and used a shifting formation to move it to Emei 635 651.
- Perception: Detects even the concealed Nether Capital when it approaches within thirty feet of his primordial spirit 646.
- Limit: Depleting the sea removes the foundation of his near-indestructibility. Cheng exploited this by transporting its waters to Rotten Peach Mountain for purification 647 648 659.
Blood Shadow Form-Splitting Great Art
An escape and body-disintegration art available only to practitioners of Blood Shadow Divine Light. Blood God Child calls it the ancestor of the All-Heavens Gods and Devils Blood Transformation Flying Escape Great Art 634.
- Activates within a single flicker of bloodlight, far faster than the blood-transformation escapes previously encountered by Cheng 634.
- Preserves him even when most of his manifested body is destroyed, provided his primordial spirit escapes 634.
- Can be used repeatedly while the Blood Sea supplies replacement essence blood 634.
- Does not guarantee escape from Nether Yin’s suppression after his transformation into a Ghost Immortal 654.
Lique Blood Godlight
A technique Blood God Child created by combining an art from the Blood God Scripture with Emei’s Lieque Formless Swordlight 609 632.
- Produces extremely fine blood threads capable of cutting the void and forming ropes or nets 632 652.
- Defiles treasures and immortal bodies while resisting yang essence and thunderfire 632.
- Remains connected to his own magical power and blood energy, allowing him to repair damaged projections 632.
- Consumes substantial essence blood. Against the Evil-Slaying Sword, damage to the projected light also wears away his own resources and causes intense pain 632 652.
Swordsmanship and Orthodox Daoist Arts
His Emei training remains integral to his demonic methods. Shangqing investigators recognized orthodox patterns in his incantations, qi circulation, and treasure manipulation, helping them identify his origins 170.
- Rapidly shifts sword techniques between light, threads, and waves to counter different attacks 642.
- Uses Human and Sword as One, combining himself with Purple Ying and Yuantu in a high-speed assault 649.
- Retains detailed knowledge of Emei’s arts, treasures, and secret arrangements 640 642.
- Refined the Five Clouds Immortal-Locking Screen using methods rooted in Emei’s Five Clouds lineage 640.
Second Primordial Spirit
Maintains a second primordial spirit capable of independent combat and possession 641 649.
- Possesses the same strength as his original body while supported by the Blood Sea 641.
- Uses separate weapons and attacks while his main body controls other treasures 642 645.
- Attempts to possess Qi Shuming under cover of the Asura host 649.
- Is gravely wounded when Cheng’s Evil-Slaying Sword Qi cuts it out of Qi Shuming’s body 650.
Blood God Scripture and Asura Arts
Uses the Blood God Scripture as both a treasure and a sacrificial implement to manifest gods and devils 649 651.
- Summons Asuras whose auras are indistinguishable from his own and allows him to mingle among or transfer himself into them 649 653.
- Fields the Blood Sea Yuantu Thirteen Asura Formed Gods and Devils, initially comprising one yin and twelve yang entities 612.
- Later produces twenty-seven Immortal Realm Asuras, with himself inhabiting one of them 653 654.
- Pays for these manifestations with the Blood Sea’s essence qi, sacrificing the same reserves that sustain his regeneration 651.
- His final Asura Ghost Immortal state makes him subject to the Nether Yin powers of Cheng’s Dao Domain 654.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Blood God Scripture — Source of his highest demonic arts. The original volume serves as a powerful shield, exerts beguiling influence, and supports sacrificial summoning. Cheng later uses the Red Wart Fire Gourd to wear it away 491 649 651 661.
- Purple Ying / Violet Ying Sword — Flying sword used alongside Yuantu in his Human and Sword as One attack 633 649.
- Yuantu — Flying sword he continues refining during the Emei battle, principally in preparation for facing Cheng. Later reduced to golden essence qi 645 661.
- Gengshen and Renzi — Swords wielded by Li Yingqiong during the Blood Sea battle; subsequently among Blood God Child’s seized swords refined by Cheng 639 661.
- Innate Water Mother Kan Metal Pellet — Former core of his Western Sea prison’s sealing array, taken when he escaped. Manipulates immense water forces and combines with the Blood Sea to restrain powerful opponents 639 640 642.
- Five Clouds Immortal-Locking Screen — Self-refined Emei-derived treasure used to trap Qi Shuming and obstruct his Pure Yang Sword Domain 639 640.
- Jade-Eyed Heavenly Net — Demonic artifact used to impede attacks sweeping through the Blood Sea 640.
- Dragon Sun and Ascetic Dhuta’s treasures — Spoils taken after devouring Ascetic Dhuta. Blood God Child considers feeding Dragon Sun to Yuantu because its bright, hot nature makes it awkward for him to wield 645.
Relationships
- Chu Sanzi — Master. His decision to pass Emei’s leadership token to Long Eyebrow embittered Deng Yin 640.
- True Person Long Eyebrow — Senior martial brother and former sect leader; imprisoned him beneath the Western Sea. Blood God Child later publicly attacked his reputation 491 612.
- Li Jingxu / Blissful Youth — Former traveling companion turned adversary. Helped imprison him, later watched his movements from the Xiling Sword Sect ruins, and fought beside Cheng 492 624 646.
- Cheng Xinzhan / True Lord Cheng — Principal opponent and eventual captor. Blood God Child admires his abilities but repeatedly underestimates his preparations 631 635 648 654.
- Qi Shuming / True Person Miaoyi — Martial nephew and Emei Sect Leader. Blood God Child seeks both to defeat him and to inflict personal suffering upon him 612 640.
- Wusaqi — Eldest disciple and one of the Blood-Robed Three Boys. Blood God Child artificially raised his power through possession; his capture exposed major secrets of the sect 439 491 492.
- Li Yingqiong — Highly valued Emei defector whom he indulges and guides toward demonic cultivation. Grants her the Blood Sea’s bodily restoration 619 637.
- Gu Chen, Cui Ying, and Wu Lao — Demonic beneficiaries or subordinates. Released Gu Chen and subdued Cui Ying and Wu Lao, supporting their open establishment of a cult 171.
- Northern Yin and Shang Sansi — Early demonic allies who supported the Blood God Sect during the Western Kunlun conflict 117.
- Dharma King Xuanyuan and Shang Heyang — Northern Faction allies. Blood God Child intervened to protect Xuanyuan at Mount Wudu, then fled with Shang Heyang when the situation collapsed 624 626.
- Xun Lanyin — Victim whom he tortured and killed before Qi Shuming to provoke the Emei Sect Leader 640.
- Ascetic Dhuta / Tao Xinye — Emei opponent devoured for his body, magical power, and treasures 645.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Establishment of the Northern Faction
During the righteous assault on Western Kunlun, Blood God Child remained in Blood Cloud Palace, observing the mountain through the Blood Cloud while his disciples fought. He arranged outside support without revealing how thoroughly his personal power exceeded that of the besieging forces 114 117 492.
He subsequently became the dominant leader of the Northern Faction and the land-based Demon Cults. His coalition broke the Xiling Sword Sect, while Golden One Palace, Qilian Sword Sect, and Leitai Monastery maintained a mutually supporting resistance 492.
Exposure of his identity and methods
Shangqing investigators first linked him to Deng Yin through his orthodox spellcasting and Demonlight Blood Flame. Wusaqi’s later interrogation exposed his prison escape, possession techniques, and long infiltration of Western Kunlun 170 491 492.
Ju qü Mountain publicized the danger posed by Blood Shadow Divine Light, prompting righteous sects to add separate innate restrictions to their defenses. His identity as Emei’s former Vice Sect Master later became widely known, damaging Emei’s standing alongside his public accusations against its leaders 492 612.
Confrontations with True Lord Cheng
Blood God Child’s schemes initially forced Cheng to concede a defeat involving collapsed mountains and a blocked river. At Mount Wudu, however, he failed to save Dharma King Xuanyuan and retreated toward Western Kunlun 611 624 626.
After becoming immortal, Cheng attacked him at Kunlun. Blood God Child survived repeated devastating sword strikes through escape and regeneration, then deceived Cheng into severing the qi column that tethered the Blood Sea to Kunlun. Freed to depart, he killed a million Demon Soldiers, absorbed their blood qi, and abandoned the depleted region 631 634.
Netherworld Blood Sea and defeat
Blood God Child transported the sea to Emei and fought its leading cultivators. He killed Xun Lanyin, devoured Ascetic Dhuta, seized treasures, and attempted to isolate the remaining defenders by keeping Cheng and Li Jingxu outside 640 645 646.
Cheng entered through a concealed Nether Capital ghost gate and began draining the sea to Rotten Peach Mountain. With his regenerative reserves disappearing, Blood God Child resorted to the Blood God Scripture, mass Asura manifestations, and a failed possession attempt against Qi Shuming 646 647 649 650.
His final transformation proved disastrous. Cheng’s Inner Landscape Deities defeated his Asuras, the Earth Book seized their images and talismanic writing, and Nether Yin’s laws restrained Blood God Child as an Asura Ghost Immortal. His escape art could not free him from its custody 653 654.
Cheng subsequently restored Western Kunlun and the Western Sea, absorbed or purified the remaining Blood Sea resources, and dismantled Blood God Child’s captured treasures 659 661.
Notable Quotes
“We’re merely whetstones for one another. Those who survive will naturally become leaders in the future. As for new disciples, we can simply recruit more.” 114
“So long as Kunlun stands, the blood sea will not dry up; so long as the blood sea does not dry up, Deng Yin will not die!” 634
Trivia
- Despite his title, his usual manifested appearance is that of a tall, handsome man rather than a child 631 645.
- When cultivators investigated his aura after his emergence, Fourth Realm, Fifth Realm, and Immortal Realm observers each perceived him as comparable to themselves 491.
- The author identifies him as the novel’s major Demon Path antagonist: a rapidly growing counterpart to the protagonist who united the demons and personally drove the Demon Calamity forward 699.
