Background / History
WE entered the 2017 Summer Split as the reigning LPL Spring Split champion. At MSI, the team carried the league’s hopes but lost to SKT in the semifinals. That defeat preceded a wave of roster-upgrade efforts across LPL clubs ahead of the World Championship in China 2.
In May, WE traded TheShy to IG in exchange for Ben. Their subsequent Summer Split meeting therefore placed both players against their former organizations 26.

Competitive Approach
Drafting and Win Conditions
- Scaling and teamfighting: In the first Summer Split game against IG, WE drafted Kennen, Kassadin, Gragas, Varus, and Karma. The casters favored its combination of poke, engage, and late-game damage if it could survive IG’s early aggression 26.
- Top–mid–jungle aggression: After losing that game, WE switched to Jax, Jayce, and Elise, with Jhin and Janna providing a utility-oriented bot lane. The casters described this adaptation as running against the ADC-focused meta 33.
- Targeted bans: WE initially banned Caitlyn and Draven against Lu Chen. In the regional qualifier decider, it banned Draven, Twitch, and Kalista—the champions associated with his earlier dominance 26 41.
Pressure and Counterplay
- Bot-lane intervention: Mystic asked Condi to gank Lu Chen frequently. Condi attempted early bot ganks in both the regular-season opener and qualifier decider, but each produced further kills for IG 27 29 42.
- Coordinated collapses: WE committed four players against Kalista in the first regular-season game and all five against Caitlyn in the qualifier. Both attempts failed after IG’s reinforcements arrived 31 43 44.
- Objective recovery: With the qualifier slipping away, Condi attempted a Baron steal as WE’s last opportunity to recover. IG’s vision exposed him, and he was killed before reaching the objective 44.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Lu Chen’s Professional Debut
WE serves as Lu Chen’s first official LPL opponent. Despite entering with championship prestige and overwhelming crowd support, it is swept by the rebuilt IG lineup 23 25 36.
| Game | WE’s Response | Decisive Events | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game 1 | Drafted a late-game composition around Kassadin. | Lu Chen’s Kalista stole Condi’s Blue Buff without vision, killed Mystic at level two, and helped turn WE’s four-player collapse into a four-for-zero loss. His 22,091 damage exceeded WE’s entire combined damage 27 28 31 32. | Defeat at 18:32 31. |
| Game 2 | Shifted pressure toward top, mid, and jungle while Mystic played safely. | Twitch’s concealed mid-lane roams disrupted Xiye and Condi. WE’s final forced engagement ended with Lu Chen securing a pentakill and an 11-0-1 score 33 34 36. | Defeat at 18:12; 0–2 series loss 36 37. |
The second game visibly damaged the team’s morale: players repeatedly retreated whenever Twitch disappeared, and their communication dwindled as IG’s lead grew. Redmi asked the manager to arrange psychologist appointments rather than focus immediately on reviewing the defeat. After the final fight, WE’s players appeared relieved that the match was over 35 36.
S7 Regional Qualifier Final
WE later faced IG at Wukesong Arena for the LPL’s final World Championship berth. IG had also beaten WE in the Summer Split third-place match, with West playing ADC 40 41.
With West starting the qualifier, WE won games one and four. Mystic’s Xayah finished the opener 5-0-8, while IG’s victories in games two and three forced the series to 2–2 41.
Lu Chen replaced West for the deciding game. His return unsettled WE’s players and fans; Redmi urged the team not to panic and argued that Lu Chen’s lengthy absence might leave him unadjusted to the meta 41.
- Early game: Condi’s level-three gank failed, allowing Caitlyn to kill both him and Mystic 42.
- Bot-lane collapse: WE’s five-player attack ended with Xiye and Mystic dead and no kills secured, while IG gained resources elsewhere 43 44.
- Final push: After stopping Condi’s Baron attempt, IG secured Baron and destroyed WE’s Nexus, winning the series 3–2 and taking the third seed 41 44.
During the post-match handshakes, Xiye and Mystic had visibly been crying. IG’s players offered encouragement for the following year 45.
Support for the World Championship Teams
Despite elimination, WE did not immediately go on vacation. It remained available for scrims with the qualified teams, earning public praise as the LPL set aside internal rivalries for the home-soil World Championship 47.
Reputation and Fanbase
- Established prestige: Its Spring Split victory and “Red Miracle” identity made WE one of the LPL’s most prominent teams 25 26.
- Large live following: At the Summer Split opener, WE’s bus attracted fans wearing custom jerseys and carrying team logos and player signs. Its arena cheers largely drowned out IG’s support 25 27.
- Mystic’s appeal: The narration links part of WE’s sizable female following to Mystic’s good looks 25.
- Fan reaction to defeat: Many supporters initially believed WE could recover after the first loss to IG, but some left during the second game as Twitch’s pressure made a comeback appear hopeless 33 35.
