Background / History
Founding and traditions
The Golden Wing Sect built its original strength and fortune around Golden-Wing Envoys. Its founder fought alongside the Golden-Wing Queen, but never achieved his next breakthrough; years of warfare contributed to his early death. The Queen continued sheltering the sect afterward, although she gradually became unwilling to meet its members 2 151.
Local tradition holds that the founding patriarch established the sect after learning Witchcraft and Gu Arts. These practices were already deeply rooted among the peoples of the Poison Tempering Mountains, who had lived alongside venomous insects and miasma for countless generations 12.
The sect deliberately settled near the mountains to give its elders and disciples convenient access to abundant spirit insects. Its founder also researched the solar essence and lunar yin essence needed to advance spirit insects, leaving conclusions that remained relevant to later generations 23 94.
Peace and institutional culture
Long-standing peace allowed many members to specialize in production rather than combat. Zong Ya, for example, raised spirit pigs to feed insects before moving to the Spirit Insect Cave after establishing her Dao Foundation 46.
The sect generally supported its disciples rather than discarding them when their prospects declined. When Lin Ke’s Spirit Power inexplicably dissipated, elders investigated and tried to save him. Even after he fell to the first layer of Qi Refining, they intended to let him live out his days in Green Mulberry Garden instead of expelling him. Butterfly Transformation True Person’s sustained investment in younger cultivators represented the majority attitude among its elders 82.
Comfort nevertheless weakened some members’ ambition. Many Golden Core cultivators stopped pursuing dangerous opportunities after gaining status and benefits, leaving them without the spirit insects needed for further breakthroughs 708.
War and external infiltration
The sect issued a Sect War Summons through Rain Spider True Person’s Mystic Vein Book, reaching cultivators who had been away for centuries. Its initial peace had left many ordinary disciples poorly prepared for battlefield conditions 45 46.
The conflict escalated when the Hengyuan Overlord and Blood Firmament Lord joined the Cloud Frontier Beast Venerable. At the same time, the reappearance of Illusionless Gu Sect insects and attacks by the Final Shadow Gate threatened a wider crisis. Hua Wujiang sought negotiations with the Beast Venerable to avoid exhausting the sect while other enemies profited 281 320.
Shu Frontier infiltrators had also entered the major sects years earlier. Hua Wujiang acknowledged that some were among the Golden Wing Sect’s top hundred disciples, but their identities could not yet be fully established. Later, rather than conducting an extensive public purge, he imposed a sect-wide Seclusion Order and appointed an Inspection Group to enforce it 370 533.
Cloud Dragon Secret Realm
During the wider war, the Golden Wing Sect allied with the Cloud Ink Sect and ordered its Heaven’s Chosen to help open a passage into the Cloud Dragon Secret Realm before its spatial disturbances ended 700.
More than 1,800 Golden Core disciples were sent into the realm. Many were stalled cultivators rather than the sect’s strongest combatants: their mission was to acquire breakthrough-supporting spirit insects and learn productive skills under Lin Ke, while stronger forces remained available to defend the sect 708.
In Golden Autumn Garden, hostile cultivators sought to damage the sect’s dragon-vein and spirit-vein resources to prevent it from producing another Fusion cultivator. Qinghe True Person’s assault nearly broke its defenses, but Zong Ya and Shen Wei rallied resistance. Lin Ke subsequently arrived with twenty Nascent Soul Blade Spirits, providing a force capable of overwhelming the opposing Golden Core army if Qinghe could be handled 719 721 722.
Territory and Facilities
A powerful Golden Wing Sect expert diverted the Red River so that it enclosed the sect on three sides before flowing northeast. The area inside its protective formation is hot and humid, favoring vegetation, snakes, and insects 5.
| Location | Function and significance |
|---|---|
| Poison Tempering Mountains | The sect occupies an outlying branch at the mountain range’s end, providing access to wild spirit insects 23. |
| Yi-Wa Market | Described early in the story as the sect’s largest market. Located beside the Red River, it hosts sect merchants and outside traders 5. |
| Year Festival Square | Hosts major sect gatherings, tournament activities, and commercial exchanges with visiting factions 29 38. |
| Green Mulberry Garden / Golden Silkworm Peak | Initially a low-status production ground for Blackgold Silkworm silk, rather than even a bottom-tier peak lineage 2 272. |
| Scripture Repository | Provides disciples with purchasable spell inheritances, including the Golden Fruit Honey-Brewing Method and Mountain-Moving and Sea-Overturning 13. |
| Core Secret Realm | Founded by the patriarch to preserve essential inheritances and treasures collected by successive leaders. Considered more important than the Scripture Repository 314. |
| Vast Source Hall | Later described as the sect’s largest trade center. Its grounds cover several peaks linked by seventy-two chains, unloading platforms, and floating ships 192. |
| Hundred Beasts Nest | Vast Source Hall facility selling live demon beasts, including Golden Core beasts and promising Dao Foundation specimens 236. |
| Mí Lín Mountain Region | The foremost defensive barrier bordering the Cloud Frontier Beast Venerable’s domain, guarded by Cloud Cliff Hermit 287. |
Organization and Membership
Cultivation and authority
| Rank or position | Responsibilities and privileges |
|---|---|
| Qi Refining and Dao Foundation disciples | Remain classified as disciples regardless of talent or reputation. Qi Refining disciples compete in the grand Year Festival tournament; Dao Foundation contests are smaller 36 277. |
| Golden Core cultivators | Become pillars of the sect and handle most affairs below the Nascent Soul and Fusion leadership 277. |
| Personal Disciples | Golden Core Personal Disciples travel the world. They can study under Nascent Soul elders and receive advanced techniques and lineage spirit insects 36. |
| Nascent Soul elders / Peak Seats | During expansion, elders receive the title Peak Seat, governing and protecting lands within a thousand li of their assigned peaks 44. |
| Fusion leadership | Forms the sect’s uppermost group of mighty cultivators during the early Year Festival 29. |
| Peak lineages and Lineage Branches | Preserve distinct inheritances or administer domains. Even declining lineages receive resources while successors remain to maintain them 272 281. |
A traveling Spirit Transformation expert is also described as the sect’s master and an existence equal in standing to the Dali Domain Imperial Sovereign. This description appears shortly after Hua Wujiang is identified as its recently appointed leader 587 588.
Administration and disciple development
- Spirit Insect Cave — Raises and manages spirit insects. Sales of masterless Golden Core insects require sect approval; its reported Nascent Soul insect is treated respectfully rather than as an ordinary possession 72.
- Discipline Hall — Introduces monthly territorial-conquest or demon-killing requirements for Dao Foundation disciples. The top hundred on its Genius Ranking receive monthly rewards 53.
- Sect Grand Tournament — Encourages disciples to use spirit insects they have personally raised or subdued 2.
- Heaven’s Chosen trials — Use rankings, challenges, and arena contests to select and test leading disciples 332 333.
- Lineage support — Resources sustain inherited traditions even after their peak influence has faded 272.
Abilities and Specialties
Insect Control and Breeding
The sect’s essential foundation lies in its Spirit Insects, rather than exclusive cultivation techniques 129.
- Provides initial spirit insects that disciples can nurture and breed into stronger varieties; this is how most members develop their insect forces 10.
- Uses the Miaojiang Gu Art, a beast-taming cultivation art bestowed on disciples 6 9.
- Restricts access to Golden-Wing Envoys to direct disciples or higher-ranking members early in the story 2.
- Depends on appropriate spirit insects to support its cultivators’ advancement from Golden Core toward Nascent Soul 708.
Golden-Wing Envoys
Golden-Wing Envoys are spirit bees obtained from the Golden-Wing Queen, not independently raised by the sect 151.
- Produce honey and serve as fast messengers 81.
- Excel at intelligence gathering because of their small size 81.
- Include tens of thousands of Dao Foundation bees displayed during the Year Festival 29.
Myriad Insects Heavenly Calamity Battle Art
The sect’s best-known collective insect battle art derives from a formula within the Miaojiang Gu Art 306.
- Combines insect armies controlled by different cultivators into a single vast tide.
- Fields hundreds of thousands of spirit insects at Falling Moon Mountain.
- Forces even Nascent Soul demons and Demon Race prodigies to give ground under its concentrated assault 306.
Golden Wings Scale Armor Art
A body-cultivation technique reportedly created by the sect master and practiced by relatively few Inner Sect disciples 704.
- Must be cultivated from early childhood.
- Converts large quantities of food into energy and thick muscle fibers.
- Strengthens offense and defense; activation briefly grants extraordinary breaking power.
- Shen Wei is a documented practitioner 704.
Limitations
- Mental attacks: Frontline forces lack sufficient mental defenses. Rare defensive artifacts are reserved for higher-ranking enemies, making ordinary engagements with mental-ability beasts unusually costly 289.
- Countering insect swarms: Jade Great Radiance Church purification methods and Giant Strength Fire Prison Sect flames repeatedly overcome insect attacks during the Heavenly Prodigy Showdown 473.
- Uneven readiness: Commercial prosperity and comfortable appointments leave some members inexperienced in combat or unwilling to risk further advancement 46 708.
Economy and Trade
- Spirit insects are a principal commercial product 129.
- Golden Essence Honey and honeycombs are sold in bulk to other sects and human settlements, with transactions routinely worth tens or hundreds of thousands of spirit stones 29.
- Blackgold Silkworm silk is produced by dedicated facilities such as Golden Silkworm Peak 272.
- Mortal labor supports insect production: Green Mulberry Garden’s farmers have raised insects for the sect across generations 43.
- Outside merchants participate extensively in Year Festival trade, with many festival storefronts belonging to other sects 38.
- Wartime profiteering occurs within its own holdings: Blue Poison Peak and Ghost-Suppressing Peak more than double prices for cold jade spider silk and red hou mane needed at the front 171.
Equipment and Treasures
- Golden-Wing Nest — A Sect-Guarding Artifact jointly refined by the founder and Golden-Wing Queen. Its internal space houses puppet Golden-Wing Envoys whose combined force threatens even Fusion cultivators. It requires time to accumulate power between uses 315.
- Golden-Wing Envoy Nests — Abandoned beehives refined into spatial equipment for carrying spirit beasts 81.
- Mystic Vein Book — Rain Spider True Person uses a jade-like example to transmit the Sect War Summons through strands of divine sense 45.
- Disciple flying swords — The sect issues low-grade Spirit Tier flying swords 6.
- Golden Wings transport ship — A roughly sixty-zhang vessel bearing the sect’s “Golden Wings” emblem carries its delegation to the Heavenly Pride Gathering 399.
- Defensive formations — Sect-protecting and fortress arrays secure its territory and frontline positions; Fortress No. 3 uses a translucent golden barrier supported by a mobile floating platform 44 297.
Notable Members
- Hua Wujiang — Supreme Elder during the demon war and later sect leader; commands the counteroffensive and protects the sect’s delegation and interests 314 315 587.
- Grass Louse True Lord — Helps ambush the Cloud Frontier Beast Venerable, explicitly stating that he fought to protect the sect 319.
- Cloud Cliff Hermit / Mister Bai — Fusion cultivator following the zither and sword rather than the usual insect path; founder of the Fine Crane River branch and guardian of the Mí Lín Mountain Region 287.
- Rain Spider True Person — Oversees festival commerce, announces expansion policies, and transmits wartime mobilization orders 38 44 45.
- Butterfly Transformation True Person — Long-serving cultivator dedicated to nurturing sect talent and continuing her master’s wish for the sect’s growth 82.
- Lin Ke — Develops Golden Silkworm Peak, reverses the Phantom Mosquito’s battlefield illusion, and later directs the sect’s southwestern development 272 289 830.
- Zhuge Qi Tian — Eldest senior brother and first-ranked disciple at the opening of the sect’s top-hundred arena trial 333.
- Wu Dao — Disciple of True Lord Dry Ant; earns renown by annihilating a Demon Race force led by an early Nascent Soul Demon King while still at late Golden Core 357.
- Zong Ya — Develops exceptional alchemical talent and helps rally the sect during the Golden Autumn Garden defense 228 721.
- Shen Wei — Heaven’s Chosen and Golden Wings Scale Armor Art practitioner who acts decisively against the collapse of the defensive line 704 721.
Relations with Other Factions
- Golden-Wing Queen — Founding ally and historical protector. Although increasingly distant, she restrains her subordinates from joining the war against the sect; True Person Mu Xuan identifies her as a Great Demon King beyond Fusion 117 151.
- Cloud Ink Sect — Ally during the Cloud Dragon Secret Realm crisis, but a competitor over Golden Autumn Garden’s spiritual veins and territorial administration 700 748 749.
- Giant Strength Fire Prison Sect — Fierce tournament rival. Fu Tan killed the Golden Wing Sect’s foremost Heaven’s Chosen at the previous gathering, feeding the hostility between their delegations 403 452.
- Jade Great Radiance Church — Rival whose cultivation methods frequently counter the sect’s insects. Its cultivators later participate in attempts to undermine the sect’s secret-realm resources 473 719.
- Cloud Frontier Beast Venerable — Major wartime enemy whose domain borders the sect’s northern defensive region 281 287.
- Illusionless Gu Sect — A threat associated with Shu Frontier infiltration and preparations for wider conflict 216 320 370.
- Dali Domain Imperial Clan — Participant in the longstanding joint exploration arrangement for the Cloud Dragon Secret Realm. Lin Ke believes the Golden Wing Sect and Hua Wujiang deter its Great Fate Officer from acting against him directly during the gathering 322 428.
- Ten Villages — Maintains friendly, mutually complementary relations with the sect after the finale’s regional reconstruction 830.
Festivals and Competition Records
Year Festival
- Combines the sect’s grand gathering, inter-faction commerce, and Qi Refining Sect Grand Tournament 29 36.
- Features an appearance by the Golden-Wing Queen’s enormous phantom and a procession of Golden-Wing Envoys 29.
- Includes livestock blood sacrifices honoring heaven, earth, and living beings in all eight directions 29.
Ancient Talisman Rankings
The sect’s leading results at the Heavenly Pride Gathering were as follows 450:
| Place | Disciple | Ancient Talismans |
|---|---|---|
| First | Lin Ke | 6,496 |
| Second | Zhuge Qi Tian | 4,930 |
| Third | Wu Dao | 4,216 |
Feng Jinyan, Shen Wei, Dongfang Yao, and Su Nuonuo also entered the top ten. Despite this collection-stage success, subsequent arena matches exposed weaknesses in the sect’s overall combat performance against the other major sects 450 473.
Unconfirmed Origins
- Possible Dragon Clan connection: Lin Ke suspects that the founding patriarch had been a spirit-insect breeder serving the Dragon Cultivators of Ten-Thousand Longevity Eternal Spring Garden. His reasoning rests on similarities between Sect Master Armor and Dragon Armor, together with the Dragon Cultivators’ insect-controlling Insect Jade; the connection remains a hypothesis 718.
- Possible provocation of the demon war: Lin Ke privately questions whether the sect deliberately lured the Demon Race into attacking to justify expansion. This is his inference, not an established account of the war’s origin 53.
