Zhou Shuchen was dumbfounded. He had honestly only meant to take a jab at Su Ping.
After all, how could he possibly summon a contracted pet beast of that level?
If Su Ping's contracted pet beast had reached that level, why would he use a rented pet beast to fight him?
That clearly made no sense!
It defied all logic, too.
But after Su Ping nodded in agreement and the summoning light faded, the proud Forest Wolf that appeared beside him was exactly the same size as the one from before!
Even more bizarrely, this Forest Wolf's fur was much more lustrous than that of the others.
What was this thing?
Was it really a Forest Wolf?
And admittedly, Su Ping really was the most attention-grabbing person among them. Now that he had finally summoned his own pet beast, he immediately drew the other students' attention as well.
The others aside, almost the instant Zhang Guowei and the young man from the Fire King Company saw Xiao Qing, its unusual fur color made them blurt out an involuntary cry:
"A mutant pet beast!"
Clearly, their words finally made everyone else understand exactly what this oddly colored Forest Wolf was.
"A mutant pet beast? I heard those are really rare. And really valuable."
"Not necessarily. It depends on the direction of the mutation and whether it has any growth potential. But generally speaking, they're definitely worth more than ordinary pet beasts!"
"No wonder Su Ping turned down Director Zhang's recommendation. A mutant Forest Wolf might not be worth any less than a Commander Rank pet beast, right?"
The exclamations ringing in his ears were secondary.
At that moment, what Zhou Shuchen found even harder to process was this Forest Wolf's size.
This mutant Forest Wolf was exactly the same size as the previous one. Did that mean...
Before he could think any further, the twin Beast Tamers in front of him urged them along:
"Could you make some room?"
Only then did everyone come to their senses, clearing a path and heading into the nearby training arena.
The twin brothers were about the same age as them, but their cultivation and beast-taming skills were a little higher. They were clearly students from one of Linzhou's elite foundational academies.
The fact that they needed opponents between the fifth and seventh tiers for combat practice was enough to prove that.
Moreover, in a sense, the brothers were two Beast Tamers controlling their pet beasts, which gave them a considerable advantage over sparring beasts without a Beast Tamer's support.
Su Ping did not mind, however. In fact, he watched the arena with keen interest as well.
Aside from Old Sha, Little Dot and Xiao Qing were the only two Forest Wolves that had completed the Woodheart nurturing process. They were also rivals who had always been pitted against each other.
This time, however, they would actually work together in battle, which made Su Ping quite interested.
Yet what Su Ping had not expected was the pair of pet beasts the twin brothers summoned after entering the arena and exchanging a glance.
They were none other than another pair of Forest Wolves!
And they were no different in size from his Forest Wolves.
"Go!"
The brothers barely hesitated before their two Forest Wolves rushed toward Xiao Qing and Little Dot, one behind the other.
Their speed was one thing, but what really piqued Su Ping's interest was the coordination between these two Forest Wolves.
Clearly, these brothers were not merely trying to show off in front of Yin, the campus belle.
They really did have some substance.
The coordination between these two Forest Wolves kept Su Ping's eyes glued to them.
Wolf packs were, by their very nature, masters of teamwork.
It was just that, under a Beast Tamer's nurturing, their individual strength increased enormously. That was why this style of fighting gradually disappeared after they became pet beasts.
But these two brothers were different.
Their two Forest Wolves moved one ahead and one behind, one to the left and one to the right, coordinating almost perfectly.
Especially since Little Dot and Xiao Qing fell far short of their opponents in terms of teamwork,
Xiao Qing's inability to join the fight quickly and directly even put their side at a disadvantage right from the start!
"Awooo!"
Little Dot's body grew larger. Accelerated Growth's size-multiplying effect boosted both strength and speed, immediately suppressing the Forest Wolf that had been tangling with Little Dot.
Yet the other Forest Wolf had already stepped in to take its place.
This sort of combined attack was not a skill, but in many situations, it was far more practical than the skills pet beasts specialized in.
Interesting! Really interesting.
Su Ping looked as though some rare treasure had suddenly caught his attention.
It was as if a flash of lightning had streaked through his mind at that instant.
Still, this was only a preliminary idea. Bringing it to fruition would require continuous training.
Yet an indescribable delight welled up in Su Ping's heart. Like a dry sponge, he absorbed the combined attacks unfolding in the arena-crude in reality, yet executed with remarkable coordination.
Su Ping had instructed Little Dot and the rented Forest Wolves to draw out their battles as much as possible. After all, the customers had paid. Giving them a little more combat practice would ease his conscience, too.
Unfortunately, compared with Little Dot, Xiao Qing was not nearly so good-tempered.
Although Xiao Qing disliked Little Dot, Little Dot was still a rival. Now Little Dot was being bullied like this, while those two cunning Forest Wolves avoided fighting Xiao Qing and focused on dealing with Little Dot first.
That made Xiao Qing deeply indignant!
Did they think I looked less threatening than that fellow?
And so, Xiao Qing erupted!
"Awooo..."
Under Poison Woodheart's terrifying enhancement, Poison Vine Strangulation was already vastly different from an ordinary Forest Wolf's Tree Vine Strangulation. Purple, twisting vines burst from the earth, almost as though they had materialized out of thin air.
Like so many venomous purple snakes, they snaked forward to coil around their targets.
They moved even faster than these two Forest Wolves, whose running speed had clearly been enhanced!
"Awoo..."
An excited howl rang out as the vines caught one of the twins' Forest Wolves directly by the paw.
Had these merely been ordinary vines, the Forest Wolf might have been able to break free with strength and skills.
Unfortunately, these were binding poison vines enhanced by Poison Woodheart.
They did not merely bind their target. They also carried a potent, paralyzing toxin!
Sure enough, less than three seconds after being entangled, the Forest Wolf's legs, which had still been able to move, suddenly stiffened in place. It stretched its legs, then fell into the arena with a thud, before everyone's astonished eyes.
Against two opponents, the remaining Forest Wolf did not last more than ten seconds either.
After Xiao Qing unleashed Poison Vine Strangulation, the situation was swiftly reversed.
From Little Dot being pinned down and seemingly about to become the first to fall, they had turned defeat into victory. From beginning to end, it had taken less than thirty seconds!
The staff member in charge of treatment hurried into the arena and picked up the two Forest Wolves. Only after administering two doses of antidote did the staff member address the worried twin Beast Tamers:
"This toxin causes bodily paralysis. They'll be fine after a little rest. There's no other danger, so don't worry."
Only then did the twin Beast Tamers let out relieved sighs.
Yet the expressions of everyone else who had watched this unusual beast battle from start to finish became incredibly complicated.
A mutant Forest Wolf-and its mutation was the rare poison attribute, no less!
No wonder Su Ping had no interest in that Scythe Giant Centipede.
Just then, the staff member responsible for treatment also brought over the Red Fang Tiger, which had already regained consciousness.
The staff member placed it in Zhou Shuchen's arms, though he was now utterly bewildered.
Class President Zhou looked down at Red Cloud in his arms. Although the Red Fang Tiger had been unconscious earlier, it was still quite indignant about the unfair fight its master had just told it about.
It had also felt its master's fighting spirit through their soul contract earlier. Now fully recovered, the little Red Fang Tiger was brimming with swagger and spirit, ready to fight again at any moment and wipe away its master's humiliation!
Then Zhou Shuchen glanced at that strange, emerald-green Forest Wolf, which was no smaller than the previous one and could even control those terrifying poison vines,
And at its proud, disdainful gaze, accompanied by its smug, scornful howls.
Class President Zhou fell silent.
And, as rotten luck would have it, Li Shu spoke from beside him as though afraid the others might not hear:
"Class President Zhou, are you and Su Ping still going to fight?"
Immediately, everyone's eyes focused on him.
Right. Were they still going to fight?
