Background / History
David grows up in Santo Domingo with Gloria, whose income supports his attendance at Arasaka Academy. He studies diligently but feels excluded by the academy’s wealthy students and doubts that hard work can overcome their financial advantage. Unable to comfortably afford even required system upgrades, he proposes leaving school to work; Gloria instead wants him to finish his education and become an Arasaka executive 65 388.
His fascination with street mercenaries begins when he watches Lier, V, and Jackie drive through a gang battle. Shortly afterward, a highway attack overturns Gloria’s car. Archido frees David, gives him a Constitutional Arms Liberty pistol, and warns him not to trust body collectors or leave his mother unattended. David has never used a gun, but takes it and carries Gloria to the only hospital covered by their insurance: Redshirt Psychiatric Hospital 62 65 66 77.
Redshirt’s staff work with Scavengers and turn on Gloria despite her previous business relationship with the hospital. After David approaches Lier for work, Lier recognizes the danger and helps him attempt a rescue. David’s hesitation and inexperience nearly get them both killed, forcing Lier to finish the rescue himself. Gloria survives 75 76 77.
David subsequently tells Lier that he will formally drop out of Arasaka Academy the next day. Although he has basic knowledge of Shards and cyberware calibration, he lacks professional qualifications. A subway encounter with Lucy gives him his first immediate opportunity for street work 83.
Appearance
- Initially slender: Lier describes his early physique as skinny, while noting its potential to accommodate substantial cyberware 83.
- Innocent-looking: During a vehicle inspection, River finds David unusually harmless-looking for a young Night City resident 165.
- Increasingly muscular and augmented: After the apartment explosion, Gloria sees his stronger build, practiced combat stance, and exposed military-grade spinal cyberware 388.
- Hamburger-marked jacket: His later jacket bears graffiti of a hamburger with its mouth open, a recognizable reference to Burger King’s growing urban legend 358.
Personality
David begins as polite, trusting, and poorly prepared for street life. He bows formally when asking Lier for work, accepts Lucy’s initial nine-to-one payment split without bargaining, and initially freezes after shooting a Scavenger. Both Lier and Lucy recognize how easily others could exploit him 75 76 83.
His generosity persists as he becomes more experienced. He gives Lucy half of his first 5,000-eddie payment from Lier and later lets her decide how to divide another job’s earnings because he trusts her. His concern for others also pushes him toward dangerous work, particularly when he believes someone needs rescuing 101 105 159 238.
Combat gradually becomes a source of confidence and excitement. David enjoys testing himself against strong opponents and wants to defeat Ebara personally, but rejects V’s suggestion that killing itself is what he likes about mercenary work. He values tangible rewards for effort and sees the willingness to fight as necessary for freedom in Night City 231 234 373.
His central motivation is protecting the people he loves. He first fights for Gloria, then learns to use weapons to protect Lucy and build a future with her. Although he admires Lier, he acknowledges that working for him brings danger rather than treating his benefactor as infallible 689.
Abilities & Skills
Sandevistan
David’s Dynalar Sandevistan Model 3 accelerates his reactions and movement, making time appear to pass at roughly half its normal speed 290 365.
- Rapid target engagement: Eliminates six Scavengers during his first deployment and intercepts an attacker threatening Maine 290.
- Emergency maneuvering: Uses acceleration to evade a charging vehicle and respond to hazards during the Badlands race 365 478.
- High-speed observation: Can follow movements that his teammates cannot clearly perceive, including the crucial firing opportunity against Adam Smasher 691 692.
- Physical limits: Accelerated perception does not let him move as fast as a bullet; focusing too closely on one projectile initially disrupts his battlefield awareness 290.
- Side effects: His first use causes bleeding, a nosebleed, and mental fog. Thiago supplies an Airhypo and warns him about the psychological lure of cyberware 290.
- Electronic vulnerability: Enemy hackers briefly interrupt his acceleration during the pursuit of Jimmy Kurozaki 327.
Enhanced Hearing
David deliberately selects Hearing Assist cyberware as a tool against faster opponents 239.
- Uses sound to partially track Sandevistan-assisted movement 239.
- Detects the activation sound of a trip mine before the apartment entrance explodes 387.
- Distinguishes an additional person’s footsteps through smoke and surrounding noise 388.
- Hears a faint warning immediately before the Arasaka ambush on the crew’s hiding place 689.
Firearms and Close Combat
David develops from an untrained pistol carrier into a capable combatant whose shooting speed and tactical reasoning impress Lier 66 373.
- Kuaibi techniques: Uses recorded movements such as the Iron Mountain Bump, followed by punches and a knee strike 103.
- Shooting under sensory disruption: After being blinded during his duel with Ebara, fires seven shots that all connect, though none inflicts a fatal wound 231.
- Improvised melee defense: Picks up a fallen katana and thrusts at Ebara when Lucy is threatened 239.
- Heavy weapons: Operates the Mackinaw’s Electromagnetic Cannon to stop Adam Smasher’s charge 692.
Technical Knowledge and Driving
David’s academy education provides basic cyberware calibration and technical knowledge, though initially not enough for licensed professional work 83.
- Applies his knowledge of inertia to maneuver the Mackinaw against Ebara 231.
- Invests earnings in learning gun modification 358.
- Buys a faulty van to repair it himself and learn vehicle mechanics 392.
- Uses scanning equipment to identify Jimmy Kurozaki’s EMP device and unusual Kiroshi cyber-eyes 326.
- Drives during armed pursuits, supply operations, and the Badlands race 231 478 645.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Constitutional Arms Liberty: Archido gives him his first pistol after the highway crash. David continues using a Liberty as a mercenary; the model later becomes central to his explanation of why he fights 66 159 290 689.
- Kuaibi 400 Shard: Lier’s early gift supplies combat techniques before David acquires his Sandevistan 83 103.
- Hearing Assist and Dynalar Sandevistan Model 3: His distinctive sensory and acceleration implants 231 290.
- Lifting exoskeleton: Used to move salvaged equipment from a crashed military convoy 165.
- Villefort Columbus: His first personally owned vehicle, purchased for 1,000 eddies despite numerous mechanical problems 392.
- Crew Mackinaw: Shared team property, usually kept at Maine’s home rather than owned by David individually 392.
- Nekomata: Used against Adam Smasher during the approach to Arasaka Tower, before Smasher kicks it from his hands 691 692.
Relationships
- Gloria — His mother and original reason for taking up a weapon. Despite her opposition to dangerous work, he eventually pays off her accumulated credit-card debt and replaces her old car with a Mackinaw pickup 65 644 689.
- Lucy — His first street-work partner and eventual girlfriend. Their relationship develops from an unequal theft partnership into mutual trust and a shared plan to visit the Moon. Her fear of losing him becomes a major point of conflict before the Arasaka Tower job 83 105 373 645 689.
- Lier / Burger King — Benefactor, employer, and role model, whom David addresses as “big brother.” Lier initially refuses to recruit him directly, but later recognizes his growth and considers passing equipment and technology to him 77 83 373.
- Maine — Crew leader and experienced teammate. Initially serves as one of the team’s principal frontline fighters; David later argues against Maine installing another Sandevistan because his cyberware load is already near its limit 254 290 551.
- V — Senior mercenary and employer who calls on David to assemble his people for the Sixth Street assignment. She intervenes when the subsequent battle leaves his crew exposed 358 365.
- Jackie — A senior ally who rescues the injured crew by killing Bowen. He also takes an interest in David’s reasons for becoming a mercenary 178 373.
- Archido — Rescues David after the highway crash and gives him his first gun. Later returns in a weaponized Mammoth to help the crew break out of an Arasaka ambush 66 689.
- Thiago — Coaches David through his first Sandevistan deployment and teaches him to remember the people and goals behind his augmentation 290.
- Ebara — A dangerous opponent whose speed pushes David to develop countermeasures. Their encounters force David to consider both the benefits of cyberware and what might happen if he augmented himself as extensively as his enemy 231 238 239.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Shard Theft and First Paid Operations
Lucy initially hires David to help steal Shards, keeping nine shares of the proceeds while he receives one and covers their retreat. His tendency to fight rather than simply withdraw eventually gets them both arrested. Lier engineers their escape, pays David 5,000 eddies, and begins using the pair for supporting work 83 100 101.
Their subsequent coordinated attack on a Militech soldier marks an improvement in David’s willingness to act under pressure. By the time Lucy agrees to seek other jobs, he is pushing for rescue work rather than remaining a petty thief 103 159.
Smuggling and Joining Maine’s Operations
David acts as the contact for a weapons shipment near Dogtown, linking him and Lucy with Maine’s crew. He follows Lucy’s warning not to reveal his connection to Burger King and insists that missing weapons be supplied before the delivery is considered complete 160.
He later joins Lucy, Rebecca, and Pilar in salvaging military cargo. The better pay encourages his transition toward full mercenary work, but the dangers become clear when Bowen breaks both his hands. Jackie kills Bowen and saves the crew 165 166 178 186.
Tyger Claws and the Decision to Augment
A rescue operation brings David into conflict with Ebara, who severely cuts his abdomen despite taking multiple pistol hits. David wants a rematch and also seeks to learn what lies behind the XBD trade he once participated in as a student 230 231 234.
At Phoenix Nightclub, the crew’s attempt to stop a suspected trafficking vehicle draws them into an overwhelming ambush. During the ensuing confrontation with two cyberpsychos, David fights to protect Lucy and explains his choice of hearing cyberware. Afterward, he volunteers to receive a Sandevistan rather than let Maine add to his already excessive implant burden 238 239 254.
Sandevistan Debut and Sixth Street Battle
Regina assigns David to a raid against Scavenger trafficker Lee Jae-hyun. With Maine and Dorio advancing alongside him and Thiago coaching over comms, he successfully uses his new Sandevistan for the first time. His excitement afterward is tempered by physical side effects and Thiago’s warning about losing sight of why he installed it 290.
Later, V recruits his team to support Sixth Street. A major EMP plunges the battlefield into darkness, and David repeatedly exposes himself to protect Maine’s crew. At the victory celebration, Lier recognizes his elite-level performance and questions him about his ambitions. David’s first stated goal is to buy Gloria a car 358 365 373.
Trauma Team and the Lunar Goal
A paid favor for Trauma Team leads David and Gloria to Kanek Roswald’s booby-trapped apartment. David survives the entrance explosion with burns, revealing the extent of his augmentation to his mother. He subsequently drives Lier in pursuit of the stolen Trauma Team AV carrying Kanek 387 388 392.
As the team’s equipment and finances improve, David increasingly focuses on saving for a Moon trip with Lucy. He takes part in the investigation of Peter Feldheimer’s lunar contact and later handles an official NCPD supply handover with Chief Coleridge. Leading an armored supply convoy makes him realize how far they have risen from stealing Shards 551 580 582 645.
Arasaka Tower Assault
When Lier offers a million eddies for an attack on Arasaka Tower without a deposit, Lucy begs David to refuse. David accepts because he believes armed resistance is how he can protect their future, and because Lier has repeatedly helped people who otherwise would have been abandoned. Lucy ultimately returns his pistol to him and accepts his decision 689.
During the approach, David combines Takekawa’s attack, an infrared tracker, and the Mammoth’s Electromagnetic Cannon to strike Adam Smasher directly in the chest. The hit sends Smasher crashing to the roadside, allowing the crew to continue toward the tower; Takekawa is also badly injured by the shot 692.
David participates in the tower operation and escapes with his squad in a damaged Mackinaw Mammoth as the nuclear electromagnetic pulse sets the building ablaze. He and Lucy then spot a motorcycle carrying an Eastern Dragon flag heading toward Arasaka Waterfront 694 699.
