Background

Tongtian and his elder brothers, Taishang Laojun and Yuanshi Tianzun, originated from Pangu’s Primordial Spirit. The Three Pure Ones once shared a life on Kunlun, but disagreements over lineage, fortune, and Heaven’s Will gradually divided them 42 154.

He founded the Interception Sect around teaching without discrimination and seizing the thread of survival left to living beings. Humans, demons, and immortals could all hear his teachings regardless of their origins. Golden Ao Island became the gathering place of the sect’s Ten Thousand Immortals 42 47.

By his encounter with Gu Changqing, Tongtian had lived through countless epochs, including the Dragon-Han Calamity, the conflict between the Witch and Demon races, and the fall of Buzhou Mountain 45.

Appearance

  • Usual appearance: A handsome Daoist wearing blue, cyan, or azure robes, with long black hair and sharply expressive eyes 47 158 206.
  • Spiritual form: Gu Changqing perceives his Dao Body as a sea of law-cleaving sword lights, with four sword shadows at its poles and a formation diagram carrying the Interception Sect’s fortune 44.
  • Mythic aura: Purple-gray Dao resonance surrounds him, at times forming a self-contained universe within three feet of his body 143 147.
  • Temporarily aged appearance: Shichen’s Time Law turns his hair white, wrinkles his face, and bends his posture while draining his lifespan and strength 261.

Personality

Tongtian is curious about unfamiliar powers and trusts both his sword and his instincts. Although he initially probes Gu Changqing’s statue with Sage divine thought, he chooses a courteous Daoist salute rather than forcing a confrontation. He explicitly explains that he came to observe, not to start a war 44 45.

His deepest attachment is to his disciples. Visions of their possible deaths and betrayals bring him to tears, and he refuses to regard his own escape as sufficient if the Ten Thousand Immortals remain doomed 46 49. This protectiveness becomes more disciplined after Gu Changqing’s guidance: he establishes rules and investigates the sect before allowing disciples to enter battle 50.

He is defiant toward authority that treats living beings as expendable. Nevertheless, affection can temper his judgment: after defeating Taishang, he strips away his Sage standing but spares his life because he remains his eldest brother 154 158.

His devotion to Gu Changqing later becomes fierce and personal. He regards protecting his master’s rest as a duty worth his life, yet reacts with terror when his own battle and breakthrough wake him 378 381 382.

Abilities & Skills

Mythic Great Luo Technique

A self-founded cultivation method bestowed by Gu Changqing, using the cultivator’s own heart and Dao rather than Heavenly Dao approval 48 49.

  • Refines deeds, legends, and enduring impressions into the foundation of mythic status 50.
  • Allows Tongtian to establish an independent Dao Source and forge his own primordial Daluo Dao fruit 139 162.
  • Produces a three-foot domain where external Sage pressure dissipates and karma struggles to attach 143 147.
  • Does not make him invulnerable: Shichen destabilizes his realm through Time Law, and Sacrificial Dao opponents later overwhelm him 261 426 441.

Sword Dao and Way of Severance

Tongtian’s swordsmanship combines slaughter with the pursuit of a path to survival. His independently forged Dao fruit contains both destruction and creation 162.

  • Spatial severance: Cuts apart Yang Mei’s Spatial Strangulation, erasing its barriers and blades into nothingness 260.
  • Origin-law severance: His Immortal-Slaying Sword Intent cuts through Origin laws and leaves wounds that resist rapid restoration 522.
  • Cross-realm pursuit: Sends the Immortal Slaying Sword after Tong Shanhe across thirty million light-years, capturing both him and his fleeing System Core 461.
  • Origin-burning strike: Fuels the Qingping Sword with his cultivation to test a Sacrificial Dao opponent; the attack disappears without harming its target 426.
  • Limit: His sword energy cannot stop the Sea of the End’s black liquid 543.

Immortal Slaying Sword Formation

An ancient killing formation controlled through the Four Immortal-Slaying Swords and their formation diagram 44 441 522.

  • Encloses opponents within four sword positions, combining barriers, sword nets, and coordinated attacks 441 461 522.
  • Supports Tongtian’s victory over the Four Saints at Jiepai Pass 153 154.
  • Is identified by Tong Shanhe’s system as a Quasi-Dao Realm formation 459.
  • Second form — Ten Thousand Swords Return to the Origin: Multiplies the four swords into 512 blades for a simultaneous assault 522.
  • Limit: Tongtian acknowledges that his cultivation cannot release its full power against the Dark Raider Clan’s Sacrificial Dao vanguard 441.

Divination and Investigation

  • Uses water mirrors and the shared roots of the Three Teachings’ fortune to detect disturbances affecting Yuanshi’s side 42.
  • After mastering the mythic technique, directly reveals the River of Destiny and the karmic net linking the Chan Sect and Western Religion against his disciples 139.
  • Cannot penetrate Gu Changqing’s Primordial Purple Patterns with Sage divine thought 43 44 45.
  • Identifies the spirit-fiber paper used for a suspicious portrait and traces its nearest source to Weaving Cloud Star, while recognizing that its widespread trade limits its investigative value 484.

Protective and Support Techniques

  • Turns the Four Immortal-Slaying Swords into heaven-supporting pillars, empowering them with his origin blood to protect living beings 206.
  • Contributes ending-oriented Dao resonance to Gu Changqing’s Heaven-Piercing Spear 334.
  • Receives authority to cross Crystal Wall Systems and spread teachings throughout the Supreme Star System 314.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Qingping Sword — His personal sword, used against the Four Saints, Hongjun, and later Firmament opponents. He repairs its cracks with chaos cyan stone in Qingping Hall 143 158 426 436.

  • Anti-System Radar and Suppression Token — Issued by Gu Changqing for locating wild systems and capturing their hosts 445.

Relationships

  • Taishang Laojun — Eldest brother and former fellow member of the Three Pure Ones. Tongtian defeats him and removes his Sage standing but refuses to kill him 144 154.
  • Yuanshi Tianzun — Second elder brother and ideological opponent. Their conflict culminates in Tongtian kicking him into Chaos and subsequently destroying Jade Void Palace 42 153 167.

  • Jieyin and Zhunti — Western Sages involved in the threat to the Interception Sect. Tongtian kills Zhunti and cripples Jieyin at Jiepai Pass 46 153.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Discovering the Interception Sect’s Predicament

Tongtian investigates the mysterious power affecting Yuqing Fortune and enters the ruined temple outside Chaoge. Unable to trace its owner through divination, he questions Gu Changqing about the Investiture of the Gods conflict 42 43 44.

Gu reveals a possible future in which the Interception Sect is destroyed, its disciples become offerings to the Investiture list, and Tongtian is removed from the Three Realms. Tongtian verifies the karmic clues, then offers three sticks of ordinary incense and asks for a way beyond the trap. This initial bow is explicitly an acknowledgment of a senior seeker, not yet an acceptance of a master 46 47.

After receiving the Mythic Great Luo Technique, he returns to Golden Ao Island, separates the sect’s fortune from the Mystic Gate’s greater current, seals the island for three days, and orders investigations into karma and foreign communications. He declares that his disciples will forge their own myths rather than accept the list as their destination 48 49 50.

Jiepai Pass and the Rejection of Sagehood

Following his seclusion, Tongtian exposes the karmic alliance against his sect and establishes the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation at Jiepai Pass. Before facing the Four Saints, he bows toward Gu Changqing’s temple and publicly identifies him as his master 138 139 141 145.

He kills Zhunti, cripples Jieyin, drives Yuanshi into Chaos, and defeats Taishang. Rather than killing his eldest brother, he strips him of Sage standing and releases him from the formation 153 154.

When Hongjun intervenes, Tongtian destroys the final Sagehood Mark binding him to the Heavenly Dao. After Hongjun withdraws, he rebuilds his cultivation and condenses an independent primordial Daluo Dao fruit. News of his victory gives Great Shang a reprieve and helps spur its advance toward Xiqi 158 162.

Holding Up the Heavens and Seeking Refuge

During the crisis surrounding the Nine Provinces Barrier, Tongtian sends his four swords across the continents as pillars supporting the heavens. The Four Saints’ assault cracks the pillars while he pleads for his former fellow disciples to awaken 206 207.

Later, he brings the surviving Interception Sect immortals to Gu Changqing’s doors. Calling himself a sinner, he offers to dissolve the sect and serve as a menial. Gu accepts the immortals as Temple servants on the condition that they remain quiet 242.

Temple Service and the Firmament

  • Chaos Demon Gods: Breaks Yang Mei’s spatial prison but is aged and weakened by Shichen before Yang Mei traps him again 260 261.
  • Preaching mission: Receives a revised Divine Elephant Suppressing Prison Force method and authority to spread teachings across newborn worlds 314.
  • Assassin attack: Kills three half-step Quasi-Immortal Emperor assassins in Gu Changqing’s bedchamber, then breaks through through battle enlightenment. Gu orders him back to Biyou Palace to stabilize his cultivation 378 381 382.
  • Primordial Beginning Origin Land: Burns his origin against a Sacrificial Dao elder but cannot stop him. After Gu’s victory, Tongtian proposes expansion; Gu instead makes him announce a policy of non-interference backed by retaliation against intruders 426 435.
  • Dark Raider incursion: Attempts to seal a rift and fights its Sacrificial Dao vanguard until Gu Changqing intervenes 441.

  • Origin-law opponents: Traps and wounds the yellow- and cyan-robed elders before deploying 512 swords against them 522.
  • Myriad Sources Ancestral Well: Helps defend the well against Old One Remnants while Gu Changqing completes his breakthrough 535.
  • Sea of the End: Joins the attempt to contain its advancing black liquid, but his sword energy and the group’s barriers fail before Gu arrives 543.
