Background / History
Shrek Academy and Long Bing
Wu Changkong came from a privileged family. With relatively high innate soul power and elders who supplied his soul spirits and cultivation resources, he grew up able to concentrate on cultivation. At Shrek Academy, he studied under Zhuo Shi alongside his junior fellow disciple, Shen Yi 17 52.
His beloved, Long Bing, was an undercover agent planted by evil soul masters. Her death devastated him, and his shame over her connection to the enemy drove him to leave Shrek Academy without saying goodbye. Although they had never married, he regarded her as his wife and ordinarily visited her grave in Heaven Dou City during winter break 52 66.
An acquaintance at the Tang Sect’s Eastsea City branch arranged his identity and secured him a teaching position at Eastsea Academy. He remained away from Shrek for nearly ten years 66.
Teaching Class Five
Wu Changkong became Class Five’s homeroom teacher with the stated goal of making his students the strongest among their peers. During introductions, he immediately punished a student who mocked Tang Wulin’s Blue Silver Grass 14.
His first assessments identified Jiang Mingyuan’s elemental control and Tang Wulin’s physical strength as exceptional. However, he initially condemned Tang Wulin’s forging as a distraction from cultivation. Jiang Mingyuan challenged this judgment by explaining that forging had paid for Tang Wulin’s chance to become a soul master—financial pressure Wu Changkong’s own upbringing had spared him 15 16 17.
He then put Jiang Mingyuan, Tang Wulin, and Xie Xie through intensive teamwork training. Their coordinated spar forced him to reveal his Soul Emperor cultivation, and he conceded after Jiang Mingyuan and Tang Wulin landed a joint attack. An accidental kick left him visiting the infirmary, missing the following day’s class, and canceling evening training 19 20.
During the Class Promotion Competition, he instructed Jiang Mingyuan to conceal his capabilities until needed. In the battle against Class One, he intervened to protect students and intercepted the Phoenix King Annihilation Sword before its slash could leave the arena 23 34.
Class Zero and Reconciliation
As Class Zero’s instructor, Wu Changkong taught battle armor theory, supervised physical and spiritual testing, and arranged weekly Spirit Ascension Platform training. He also introduced the students to the Tang Sect’s Hall of Heroes and invited them to join the sect 36 37 40 41.
Before Jiang Mingyuan visited Shrek City, Wu Changkong entrusted him with his Shrek identification card and its contribution points. He understood that doing so might allow people at Shrek to locate him. Zhuo Shi and Shen Yi subsequently found him at Eastsea Academy, bringing their long separation to an end 48 66.
Zhuo Shi offered immediate midterm admission for Wu Changkong and Class Zero, but Wu Changkong refused. He argued that Eastsea Academy was already providing substantial resources and that his students needed to develop the will to overcome difficulties themselves. Zhuo Shi outwardly protested but privately welcomed his former student’s maturity 67.
Return to Shrek Academy
Wu Changkong continued preparing Class Zero for admission and consulted its members before committing them to the Tianhai Grand Competition’s seven-person event. Yun Ming later invited him to remain at Shrek as their teacher, explicitly telling him that he owed the academy nothing 79 80 96.
Two and a half years later, he brought Class Zero to Shrek City for the entrance examination. After their admission, he escorted them to their dormitories and Sea God Island. Jiang Mingyuan noticed that he had become more talkative and less stern, as though a burden had finally lifted 101 119.
He subsequently served as an assistant instructor alongside Shen Yi under Ya Li. His duties included gathering students for the intergrade tournament, enforcing the equipment restrictions of their fifteen-day challenge trip, and helping coordinate the response to Jiang Mingyuan’s disappearance 125 139 149 155.
At the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy, he publicly announced a challenge on his students’ behalf through a loudspeaker, then vanished and left them to face the response 168.
Appearance
- Build: Tall, with long legs and a striking bearing 14.
- Face: Handsome features and bright eyes 14.
- Hair: Pale blue, worn loose to his waist 14.
- Usual expression: Icy and aloof. Jiang Mingyuan initially questioned an old photograph because the gently smiling young Wu Changkong looked so unlike his current teacher 52 76.
Personality
Wu Changkong is taciturn, demanding, and blunt. He warns students unwilling to endure hardship to leave his class, and even Eastsea Academy’s dean receives little warmth from him. His early criticism of Tang Wulin’s forging shows that his strictness can become unfair when he judges circumstances he does not understand 15 16 79.
His cold manner coexists with practical care. He shields spectators from poison during assessments, moves into his students’ dormitory building to teach them more effectively, and allows them extra sleep after late-night cultivation before going out to buy their breakfast 16 66.
He values independent judgment rather than unquestioning obedience. When inviting students into the Tang Sect, he urges even those who immediately accept to reconsider the long-term consequences. His refusal of privileged Shrek admission follows the same principle: he wants his students to accept help without becoming dependent on others to solve every difficulty 42 67.
Long Bing’s death leaves him burdened by grief and guilt for years. His reunion with Zhuo Shi and eventual return to Shrek mark a visible softening of his demeanor 52 66 119.
