Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Reverse Cursed Technique awakening 11 Retrospectively described as mastering the technique on the brink of death. It became a major source of healing and combat endurance.
Fully automatic Limitless defense 11 Reverse Cursed Technique allowed him to turn active Limitless into a passive defense. Combined with the Six Eyes’ near-zero cursed energy loss, this produced automatic, all-angle protection.

Background / History

Gojo’s birth disrupted the existing balance between sorcerers and cursed spirits. By elementary-school age, his presence already terrified many curse users. During high school, he and Suguru Geto became known as the “strongest duo,” suppressing hostile curse-user organizations 45.

In August 2006, Toji Fushiguro assassinated the Star Plasma Vessel, Riko Amanai, defeated Geto, and apparently killed Gojo. Later passages qualify this as having “killed” Gojo and establish that Gojo subsequently killed Toji 4 45 46.

Gojo eventually killed Geto but refused to let Shoko Ieiri dispose of his body. Despite Geto’s expulsion and death sentence, he erected an unmarked grave for his former best friend behind Jujutsu High. The preserved body later became Kenjaku’s vessel 24 42.

Original Timeline

In the timeline preceding Kashimo’s rebirth, Gojo fought Sukuna in the Shinjuku Showdown. His performance included domain clashes, close combat, and a final Hollow Purple. The narration attributes his defeat to an intelligence disadvantage compounded by arrogance: Sukuna gained an opportunity to unleash a world-severing slash without chanting. Kashimo fought Sukuna immediately after Gojo’s death 5 11.

Appearance

Gojo has dazzling white or silver hair and luminous azure eyes, usually concealed behind a black blindfold 7 10 25.

  • Black blindfold — lowered or pulled aside when confronting Kashimo and identifying Jogo’s cursed energy 10 29.
  • Sunglasses — worn during Megumi’s underground training 15.
  • Pale-blue glow around his eyes — appears when his distinctive cursed energy flows through them 10.

Personality

Gojo is teasing and theatrical. He jokes with Nanami, deliberately irritates Utahime, and presents Yuji’s return from apparent death as a surprise-box performance. When Megumi and Kugisaki turn their anger on Yuji, Gojo retreats to watch rather than intervene 9 25.

His confidence rests on overwhelming strength, but he also recognizes its loneliness. Kashimo’s fearlessness interests him, and he welcomes the prospect of a future challenge from someone who might reach his level 10 32.

Gojo protects promising students while using harsh methods to develop them. He keeps Yuji’s revival secret partly because Megumi’s grief is driving his training, and he worries that the approaching threat will leave his students too little time to grow 15.

Geto remains his deepest emotional vulnerability. News that Geto’s body has returned strips away Gojo’s usual amusement; at the unmarked grave, he turns off Limitless and stands exposed to the rain. His growing responsibilities also reduce his sleep from three hours to fewer than two 10 24.

Abilities & Skills

Six Eyes

The Six Eyes provide exceptional cursed energy perception and near-zero energy loss 11.

  • Detect minute errors in Megumi’s cursed energy control, even while Gojo wears sunglasses 15.
  • Recognize Jogo’s cursed energy signature and register the large-scale disturbance at Jujutsu High 29 32.
  • Are presented as capable of discerning the unusual cursed energy flowing through the Inverted Spear of Heaven 39.
  • Do not resolve Kenjaku’s identity: Gojo’s perception recognizes Geto’s body as genuine, while his own understanding of Geto tells him the occupant is someone else 42.

Limitless

Limitless supplies Gojo’s automatic defense and can also be adjusted for movement and offensive pressure 11 42.

  • Blocks every claw strike from Megumi’s Divine Dog: Totality during training 15.
  • Sends Megumi flying when his cursed energy control slips 15.
  • Enables instantaneous acceleration through a slight adjustment to the technique’s structure 42.
  • Can be voluntarily deactivated, as Gojo does at Geto’s grave 24.
  • Named applications: Blue and Red are identified as offensive options in Shibuya; Hollow Purple appears in the original-timeline battle against Sukuna 5 42.
  • Countermeasure: Domain Amplification lets Jogo and Hanami confront Limitless without being immediately overwhelmed by it 42.

Reverse Cursed Technique

Gojo possesses Reverse Cursed Technique, a powerful means of healing and endurance that he learned near death 8 11.

  • Supports the transition from actively maintained Limitless to automatic defense 11.
  • Works with the Six Eyes’ energy efficiency to sustain his defensive technique 11.

Domain Expansion: Unlimited Void

Unlimited Void is described as an overwhelmingly powerful domain and one of the abilities placing Kashimo at a decisive disadvantage in an early confrontation 10.

  • Participates in the domain clashes against Sukuna in the original timeline 5.
  • In Shibuya, Gojo opens his domain for only 0.2 seconds, securing 299 seconds before the special grade cursed spirits regain consciousness 42.
  • Uses that interval to kill 1,000 transfigured humans, though the high-speed targeting and repeated attacks leave him heavily exhausted 42.

Speed and Close Combat

Gojo combines exceptional speed with hand-to-hand combat and overwhelming cursed energy pressure 5 42.

  • Teleports behind Kashimo during their information exchange and threatens him at point-blank range 10.
  • Breaks Jogo’s arm and closes on Hanami before it can respond effectively 42.
  • Exorcises Hanami by crushing its body with overwhelming cursed energy 42.
  • Is the sole modern sorcerer placed ahead of Naobito Zenin in speed 50.

Teaching and Institutional Authority

Gojo uses both practical training and political influence to protect and develop sorcerers 15 44.

  • Forces Megumi to summon shikigami at their minimum cursed energy threshold while enduring outside interference 15.
  • Coordinates Yuji’s field training with Nanami 15.
  • Uses his standing as clan head and Special Grade Sorcerer to shield people who would otherwise face imprisonment or execution 44.
  • Privately detains Kechizu and Eso in a detection-blocking chamber and files false reports of their exorcism 37.

Relationships

  • Suguru Geto — Former best friend and partner in the “strongest duo.” Their bond survives Geto’s death and becomes central to Kenjaku’s sealing trap 24 42 45.
  • Hajime Kashimo / Yunyi — Mysterious student, intelligence source, and prospective challenger. Gojo admires his potential but questions how he knows so much about the enemy 7 10 37 40.
  • Megumi Fushiguro — Student and beneficiary of Gojo’s protection. Gojo bought out the Zenin Clan’s contract for him, trains his cursed energy control, and encourages him to fight more greedily 15 34 44.
  • Yuji Itadori — Student and Sukuna’s vessel. Gojo protects him, conceals his revival, and arranges his training with Nanami 15 25 44.
  • Junpei Yoshino — Protected from execution for attacking ordinary people and placed under a Grade 2 Sorcerer’s tutelage 25 44.
  • Shoko Ieiri — Medical colleague and confidante regarding Geto’s body, souls, and the danger posed by Idle Transfiguration 24.
  • Kento Nanami — Colleague whom Gojo teases but trusts with Yuji’s training and investigations 9 15.
  • Utahime — Fellow teacher whom he repeatedly irritates; entrusted with investigating collusion among Kyoto’s higher-ups and tracking Geto’s former associates 25 37.
  • Toji Fushiguro — Past opponent who nearly killed him and was later killed by Gojo 4 45 46.
  • Kenjaku — Enemy who possesses Geto’s body and exploits Gojo’s memories to seal him 42.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Kashimo’s Admission and the Geto Investigation

  • Supports Kashimo’s admission to Jujutsu High and observes his entrance test, recognizing that he is holding back 7.
  • Watches Kashimo fight five students, confident he can stop the encounter if necessary 9.
  • Accepts a binding vow exchanging information about Geto’s possible survival for access to the Jujutsu Archive, lending Kashimo his student ID 10.
  • Consults Shoko about the returned body and the possibility that Mahito could awaken cursed techniques in ordinary people 24.

Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event

  • Reveals Yuji’s survival and assigns Utahime to investigate possible collaborators within Kyoto’s leadership 25.
  • Recognizes Jogo’s presence during the attack; Jogo retreats rather than risk Gojo’s arrival 29.
  • Explains afterward that Tengen’s barrier primarily conceals the school rather than defending it against special-grade intruders 32.

Death Paintings and Mechamaru

  • Spares Kechizu and Eso, conceals their survival, and retains them for questioning 37.
  • Offers to handle the higher-ups concerning Yu Xingji’s removal from Kyoto’s roster after his rescue 40.
  • Reassesses Kashimo’s strength after learning that he escaped Geto and Mahito while bringing Yu Xingji back alive 40.

Shibuya Incident and Sealing

The enemy’s barriers demand that Gojo enter alone. On the subway platform, civilians restrict his offensive choices: Blue, Red, or a conventional Domain Expansion would cause casualties he refuses to accept. He instead kills Hanami and uses his brief domain opening to eliminate the transfigured humans 41 42.

Kenjaku then opens the Prison Realm and appears in Geto’s body. Although Kashimo warned Gojo beforehand, the sight triggers enough memories to satisfy the sealing condition: one minute within the target’s mind while inside a four-meter radius. Once restrained, Gojo cannot sense his cursed energy or muster strength 42.

Gojo calls on Geto to resist being used. Geto’s lingering will briefly takes control of Kenjaku’s hand and fires a golden streak into Gojo’s chest, but its effect is not explained before Kenjaku closes the Prison Realm 42.

  • Rescue response: Yu Xingji relays the sealing through Mechamaru’s communication devices, prompting efforts to escape the Curtains, summon help, and recover Gojo 43 44.
  • Political consequences: His absence threatens his protected students with execution and Jujutsu High with internal purges and outside attacks 44.
  • Wider consequences: Curse users who had feared Gojo’s presence join Kenjaku in hopes of regaining their former freedom 45.
