Appearance

Hanami has a bipedal, wooden body described as both pale and gray-green, with dead wood and moss allowing it to blend into trees 12 22.

  • Face: Smooth wood marked with fine, leaf-vein patterns; lacks human features and the muscular structure needed for facial expressions 12 31.
  • Flower Offering: A flower on its left shoulder containing a crimson, slit-pupiled eye, normally concealed beneath white cloth 13.
  • Hands: Can develop branches at the fingertips or transform into sharp wooden blades 14 31.
  • Blood: Severe injuries release crimson sap mixed with purple-black cursed-spirit blood 14.

Personality

Hanami treasures plants and regards human damage to them as desecration. It personally cultivates a flower bed in Yoyogi Park, yet values its flowers far more than human life: after a child uproots a hydrangea, Hanami kills him and treats the act as justice for the land 12.

Despite this cruelty, Hanami usually considers the consequences of its actions. It initially suppresses its anger toward park visitors and attempts to avoid Kashimo rather than expose the alliance prematurely. Kashimo’s destruction of its flower bed overwhelms that restraint 12.

Hanami places considerable importance on teamwork. It mediates disputes within the alliance, accepts cooperation with Kenjaku as an exchange of interests, and helps Thousand Fangs despite being attacked by him. Its fondness for the beast curse reflects its belief that animals and forests belong together 22 31 36.

Abilities & Skills

Physical Strength and Durability

Hanami’s defenses rely on exceptional physical toughness rather than Mahito’s soul-based restoration. Kenjaku estimates both Hanami and Jogo individually at strength comparable to five to seven of Sukuna’s fingers 21 22.

  • Noritoshi Kamo’s full-power Piercing Blood removes only a small flake from its forehead 30.
  • Megumi Fushiguro’s black-bladed cursed tool cannot scratch its outer shell 30.
  • Thousand Fangs’ Lion Tiger claws fail to damage its raised arm; Hanami subsequently injures him with a heavy punch 31.
  • Its body resists paralysis from Kashimo’s electrical cursed energy, although his blows briefly interrupt its movement 13.
  • Its toughness does not prevent Kashimo’s accumulated-charge lightning strike from tearing through its chest and Flower Offering 14.

Plant Manipulation

Hanami controls branches, roots, vines, flowers, and trees for offense, restraint, and movement 11 13 31.

  • Reinforced branches: Launches steel-hard, razor-sharp growths from multiple directions. A vegetation-rich battlefield such as Yoyogi Park greatly expands its attack coverage 13.
  • Poisonous vines and thorns: Entangles targets and pierces their flesh with barbed growths 12.
  • Binding Roots Descend: Raises an enormous tree to interrupt an incoming attack and carry Hanami away from close combat 13.
  • Restraint: Produces thorned vines even through a lifeless rooftop, binding Thousand Fangs’ legs before striking him 31.
  • Transport: Uses tree stumps to travel rapidly and escape; moves the wounded Megumi from a rooftop to the forest floor through a spreading patch of flowers 14 31.
  • Detection: Relies on surrounding plants for warning, though they fail to alert it to Kashimo’s arrival 12.

Illusions and Calming Flowers

Hanami can disrupt an opponent’s mind through flowers and illusions 11 14 30.

  • Illusory Realm: Fear: Traps Kashimo in a vision of the Shinjuku battlefield and Ryomen Sukuna, temporarily freezing him while Hanami attempts to escape 14.
  • Calming effect: Flower clusters relax the gravely injured Megumi’s consciousness until he passes out 30.
  • Medicinal growths: Its flower field includes herbs that can stop bleeding and heal wounds. Hanami uses them to treat Megumi’s otherwise fatal injuries 31.
  • Limit: Fear does not guarantee submission. Kashimo responds to the image of Sukuna with a maximum-output Black Flash, striking Hanami and shattering its domain 14.

Domain Expansion: Sea of Devouring Light

Hanami’s domain creates an endless flower field beneath a false sky, with a blood-red sun rising at one end. Its activation depends on the surrounding environment and requires no corresponding hand sign; Hanami raises its hand to uncover Flower Offering’s eye instead 13.

  • Grants its technique attacks a sure-hit effect 13.
  • Allows it to remain atop a summoned stump while preparing a ranged attack 13.
  • Kashimo uses Hollow Wicker Basket to neutralize the sure-hit effect, but Hanami’s ensuing bombardment still forces him to activate Mythical Beast Amber 13 14.
  • The domain’s outer shell breaks under Kashimo’s Black Flash 14.

Flower Offering: Falsehood

Flower Offering absorbs cursed energy from surrounding vegetation and releases a massive golden beam. Its fully opened flower conceals more than half of Hanami’s body 13.

  • Fuel: Drains surrounding plants, causing large areas of Yoyogi Park to wither and disintegrate 13 15.
  • Domain combination: Gains the domain’s sure-hit effect; its blast floods the enclosed space with golden light 13.
  • Demonstrated damage: Completely annihilates Kashimo’s left arm, pushing him into the crisis in which he grasps Reverse Cursed Technique 15.
  • Recovery cost: Hanami states that using the full-power attack prevents it from employing Flower Offering for the next few days 13.
  • Vulnerability: Kashimo’s sure-hit lightning tears Flower Offering in two 14.

Regeneration

Hanami repairs its cursed-spirit body with cursed energy, including while attempting to escape Kashimo 14.

  • Its body is almost fully regenerated by its return to Dagon’s domain, but the damaged shoulder flower and weak breathing show that recovery remains incomplete 16.
  • Its injuries still affect its voice when it mediates between Jogo and Thousand Fangs 22.
  • It cannot learn Reverse Cursed Technique: positive energy is inherently destructive to cursed spirits. Its treatment of Megumi instead relies on plant-based healing 31.

Concealment and Domain Amplification

  • Camouflage: Blends into tree bark while suppressing its cursed energy almost completely, making detection difficult even for a sorcerer directly beneath it 12.
  • Barrier evasion: Can slip past barrier detection; Gojo later identifies a nature spirit’s unusual properties as an explanation for the intrusion into Jujutsu High 11 32.
  • Domain Amplification: Uses it alongside Jogo against Gojo’s Limitless in Shibuya. Hanami stops maintaining it to resume plant attacks, creating the opening Gojo exploits to kill it 42.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Yoyogi Park and Kashimo’s Training

Kashimo selects Hanami as an opponent capable of pushing him toward Reverse Cursed Technique. He considers its durable body, physical power, plant control, and illusions suitable for a dangerous but survivable fight, then traces its likely habitat to Yoyogi Park 11.

Hanami kills a child for uprooting its hydrangea. When Kashimo arrives, it initially chooses retreat to protect Kenjaku’s plans, but turns to fight after he burns its carefully cultivated flower bed 12.

Kashimo overwhelms its initial plant attacks, prompting Hanami to deploy Sea of Devouring Light and Flower Offering. The bombardment forces Kashimo to activate Mythical Beast Amber and helps him master Reverse Cursed Technique. He subsequently destroys Flower Offering with lightning and breaks the domain with Black Flash 13 14 15.

Although Hanami escapes barely conscious and without enough strength for another teleportation, Kashimo deliberately declines to pursue it. He wants to preserve its role in future events rather than risk an unpredictable change to the timeline 14 15.

Return to the Alliance

Jogo reaches Hanami in time to help it survive and brings it back to the group’s refuge in Dagon’s innate domain. Hanami recounts the fight to Kenjaku, whose attention is especially drawn to Kashimo’s use of Hollow Wicker Basket 16.

Still recovering, Hanami attempts to persuade the newly born Thousand Fangs to cooperate with Kenjaku and steps between him and Jogo when their disagreement threatens to become violent 22.

Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event

During the assault on Jujutsu High, Hanami overwhelms Inumaki, Noritoshi Kamo, and Megumi. After Thousand Fangs gravely wounds Megumi, Hanami remembers Kenjaku’s warning that a student may serve as a trigger for Sukuna and prevents Megumi’s death 28 30.

Hanami treats and relocates Megumi, then fights Thousand Fangs when he insists on killing him. Roots, vines, and physical blows hold the beast curse back until Kashimo intercepts his aerial attack 31.

Hanami later rescues Thousand Fangs during the attack’s conclusion. That distraction exposes it to the aftershock of Gojo’s Hollow Purple, which shears away most of its left shoulder and nearly kills it. Nevertheless, Hanami argues in favor of helping Thousand Fangs recover 36.

Shibuya Incident and Death

Hanami joins Jogo and Choso in slaughtering civilians on the subway platform to pressure and exhaust Gojo ahead of his sealing. When Gojo shifts toward direct offense, Hanami abandons Domain Amplification and attempts to obstruct him with maximum-output roots and vines 42.

Gojo closes the distance faster than Hanami anticipates and crushes its body into bloody mist with overwhelming cursed energy. Its death later drives Thousand Fangs to recognize his attachment to Hanami and vow revenge against the sorcerers 42 49.

Relationships

  • Hajime Kashimo — Enemy who deliberately provokes Hanami to learn Reverse Cursed Technique. Hanami forces him to use Mythical Beast Amber, but he defeats and intentionally spares it 11 12 14 15.
  • Kenjaku — Strategic ally whose plans Hanami tries to preserve. Hanami supports cooperation as an exchange of interests, though Kenjaku largely ignores its appeal while dealing with Thousand Fangs 12 16 22.
  • Jogo — Companion who helps Hanami survive its defeat and angrily challenges Kenjaku over their inadequate intelligence 16.
  • Dagon — Companion whose innate domain provides the alliance with concealment and a place to recuperate 16 22.
  • Mahito — Fellow member of the alliance. Hanami’s forest affinity places it closer to the earth, ocean, and beast curses than to Mahito, who originates from human malice 11 36.
  • Thousand Fangs — Fellow curse whom Hanami mediates for, fights, and later rescues. Hanami feels an instinctive affinity with him as a beast of the forest; its death becomes a powerful motive for his revenge 22 31 36 49.
  • Megumi Fushiguro — Enemy student whom Hanami protects and treats to comply with Kenjaku’s instructions, not out of sympathy for sorcerers 30 31.
  • Satoru Gojo — Enemy whose Hollow Purple nearly kills Hanami at Jujutsu High and who ultimately kills it in Shibuya 36 42.
