Background / History
Itadori became Sukuna’s vessel after swallowing a finger in June. His action broke the restraints that had kept Sukuna’s twenty fingers peacefully sealed, allowing finger-related curses to turn formerly minor paranormal phenomena into lethal attacks 34.
At the juvenile detention center, Itadori chose to regain control of his body despite knowing it would mean his death, sacrificing himself for his companions. Megumi subsequently blamed his own weakness for the loss. Itadori was only apparently dead, however, and Gojo concealed his return while using Megumi’s grief as motivation for training 8 9 15.
His position as Sukuna’s vessel made him a target for execution. Gojo’s protection kept him alive, while Kyoto principal Yoshinobu Gakuganji attempted to arrange his assassination during the Goodwill Event 25 28 44.
Appearance
- Hair: Short and pink 25.
- Clothing: Wears a familiar hooded sweatshirt when Gojo reveals his survival at the Goodwill Event 25.
- Expression: His eyes show a firmer resolve when Kashimo meets him after his return 25.
Personality
Itadori fears death but places his companions’ lives above his own. His willingness to sacrifice himself at the detention center leaves a strong impression on Megumi. Later, he and Kugisaki refuse to let Megumi face the Yasohachi Bridge curse alone, considering the danger to his sister sufficient reason to help 9 33.
His concern for others can turn into fierce anger. Believing Mahito has killed Junpei, he breaks free of Mahito’s grip and attacks with renewed strength. By their subsequent battle alongside Nanami, he has begun reconciling his ideals with the responsibility of exorcising curses and confronting transfigured humans 21 23.
During Shibuya, Itadori fights without hesitation but remains conscious that transfigured humans were once people. His determination is not simply self-sacrificial: he promises Junpei that he will survive because rescuing Gojo and destroying Mahito remain unfinished goals 43 47.
Abilities & Skills
Close-Quarters Combat
Itadori’s main strength is powerful, agile hand-to-hand fighting reinforced with cursed energy 33 43.
- Overwhelms Kechizu in their initial exchange through superior speed, reflexes, and heavy punches 33.
- Dodges Blood Arrows and Wing King while closing the distance to prevent Kechizu from helping Eso 35.
- Reads a transfigured human’s attack pattern and destroys the joint connecting its bone blade to its torso 43.
- Helps defeat Kurizaka Jiro once the group understands his Reversal technique; Jiro’s speed and martial skill fall below Itadori’s and Megumi’s 47.
- Remains markedly slower at clearing groups of enemies than Kashimo 43.
Soul Perception and Soul-Damaging Strikes
Sharing his body with Sukuna lets Itadori instinctively perceive and attack the contours of a soul 21.
- His punches bypass Mahito’s defense based on preserving his soul’s shape 21.
- Combines these strikes with Nanami’s openings to keep Mahito under sustained pressure 23.
- Must still land a physical hit: Mahito counters by changing shape and moving vulnerable areas beyond his reach 21 23.
Black Flash
Itadori uses Black Flash to deliver devastating close-range blows 35 36.
- Lands Black Flash during the battle against Kechizu and Eso 35.
- Shatters Thousand Fangs’ snapping-turtle shell defense and disrupts his transformation 36.
- Follows immediately with another Black Flash that crushes Thousand Fangs’ chest 36.
- Benefits from the post-Black Flash state that restores some cursed energy output efficiency and increases the likelihood of another Black Flash 36.
- Cannot secure victory through bodily damage alone against Thousand Fangs, who reconstructs himself using cursed energy 36.
Poison Immunity
As the King of Curses’ vessel, Itadori is immune to the negative effects of poisons 35.
- The Death Paintings’ poisonous blood does not paralyze his nerves or slow his movements 35.
- Still experiences pain from Rot; poison immunity does not make the entire attack harmless 35.
- Remains vulnerable to Thousand Fangs’ separate cursed-energy suppression and draining effect 36.
Divergent Fist
- Considers using Divergent Fist against a giant, multiarmed transfigured human by circling to its flank and targeting an exposed joint. Kashimo destroys the enemy before he carries out the plan 43.
Sukuna’s Resistance to Soul Interference
- Mahito’s attempt to use Idle Transfiguration on Itadori also touches Sukuna’s soul, provoking Sukuna to repel him and issue a warning 21.
- This intervention belongs to Sukuna, not to a technique controlled by Itadori; Sukuna otherwise willingly watches him suffer 21.
Equipment / Items
- Mechamaru communication device — Given to him by Kashimo during Shibuya. Worn beside his ear to receive Yu Xingji’s instructions, then switched to speaker mode to brief Nanami 43 44.
- Steel wire — Used to bind three curse users during a rooftop ambush. Kurizaka Jiro tears through it and breaks free 45.
Relationships
- Ryomen Sukuna — Shares Itadori’s body as its incarnated occupant. His presence enables Itadori’s soul perception, but he is not a dependable ally 21.
- Satoru Gojo — Teacher and protector who conceals Itadori’s survival and later reveals him at the Goodwill Event. Rescuing Gojo becomes a central objective after his sealing 15 25 44 47.
- Megumi Fushiguro — Classmate and close companion. Blames himself for Itadori’s apparent death, later challenges him to become stronger, and entrusts him with rescuing subway survivors 8 32 47.
- Nobara Kugisaki — Classmate and combat partner. Coordinates closely with him against the Death Paintings; her grave injury becomes his immediate concern after Kashimo intervenes 35 36.
- Junpei Yoshino — Friend whom Itadori believes Mahito has killed. Their unexpected reunion occurs during Shibuya 21 44.
- Kento Nanami — Senior sorcerer who warns him about Mahito, saves him during their fight, and coordinates the response to Gojo’s sealing 21 23 44.
- Hajime Kashimo / Yunyi — Fellow student and Shibuya teammate. Secretly saves Junpei, intervenes against Thousand Fangs, and guides Itadori through the streets after Gojo’s sealing 21 25 36 43.
- Aoi Todo — Goodwill Event opponent who later calls Itadori his best friend 26 32.
- Mahito — Sworn enemy. Itadori’s ability to damage souls makes him a natural counter to Mahito, though Mahito’s changing form complicates their battles 21 47.
- Kechizu and Eso — Death Painting opponents who are secretly detained rather than killed. Kashimo claims they are related to Itadori by blood, but Gojo states that this remains unconfirmed 36 37.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Mahito and Junpei
- Confronts Mahito at Junpei’s school and urgently tells Junpei to flee 21.
- Mistakes the blood left by Kashimo’s secret rescue for evidence of Junpei’s death, triggering an enraged attack 21.
- Joins Nanami in overwhelming Mahito. When Mahito traps Nanami inside Self-Embodiment of Perfection, Itadori prepares to strike its barrier from outside 23.
Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event
- Returns publicly from his supposed death inside Gojo’s performance box. Megumi and Kugisaki strike him for keeping his survival secret 25.
- Holds off Todo while the other Tokyo students scatter; Kashimo intercepts the Kyoto fighters approaching their battle 26.
- Is targeted by Gakuganji’s assassination plan, which includes a controlled semi-grade 1 cursed spirit. The spirit’s destruction is actually another cursed spirit’s work, not a confirmed Itadori feat 28.
- Visits the recovering Megumi before the schools replace the individual battles with baseball 32.
Yasohachi Bridge and the Death Paintings
- Enters the bridge curse’s incomplete domain with Megumi and Kugisaki, then pursues Kechizu through a vortex when Kugisaki is taken away 33.
- Fights the Death Paintings alongside Kugisaki before Thousand Fangs attacks all sides and gravely wounds her 35.
- Lands consecutive Black Flashes on Thousand Fangs. Kashimo drives the curse away and stops Itadori from finishing Kechizu 36.
- Becomes the reported killer of the brothers through fabricated exorcism records, although Gojo secretly holds both in a detection-blocking chamber 37.
Shibuya Incident
- Joins Mei Mei’s backup team on October 31, 2018, and defeats the grasshopper cursed spirit guarding the underground Curtain 41 42.
- Receives confirmation of Gojo’s sealing through Mechamaru’s device and fights alongside Kashimo to reach other sorcerers 43.
- Reunites with Junpei and helps brief Nanami before joining the operation to lift the outermost Curtain 44 45.
- Helps defeat Kurizaka Jiro and catches the badly injured Ino when he falls from the tower 47.
- Heads toward the subway station to rescue survivors while Megumi and Junpei evacuate Ino 47.
