Appearance

Personality

Natsu is fiercely competitive and eager to challenge powerful mages. Seeing Xi Feng defeat Gray prompts an immediate attack, and learning that Gildarts is the guild’s strongest S-Class Mage produces the same response. Even after being knocked down, he declares that he will eventually surpass Gildarts 8 10.

His impulsiveness frequently creates problems for his teammates. He shouts upon hearing that an Eisenwald member is aboard their train, alerting the enemy, and later steals an S-Class mission request despite lacking authorization. Against Totomaru, he repeatedly attacks before understanding why his own flaming fist keeps striking him 22 23 26 35.

His rivalry with Gray does not prevent genuine concern for him. When Lyon makes Gray cry, Natsu tries to intervene and has to be restrained. He is similarly unwilling to abandon Erza during the Tower of Heaven crisis or accept Xi Feng’s arrest without attempting a rescue 25 29 42.

Natsu takes attacks on Fairy Tail personally. He demands retaliation after Phantom Lord damages the guildhall and later presses toward Jose to avenge Makarov, despite Happy warning him that Jose is one of the Ten Wizard Saints 33 35 37.

Fire Dragon Slayer Magic

Background / History

Early Guild Life

Already a Fairy Tail member when Xi Feng brings Mirajane, Lisanna, and Elfman to the guild, Natsu challenges Xi Feng after witnessing Gray’s defeat. Xi Feng catches his flaming fist and throws him aside, after which Natsu immediately resumes arguing with Gray 8.

Natsu later finds a large egg in the woods. Convinced its markings resemble dragon claws, he declares it a dragon egg and resolves to hatch it. Lisanna offers to help Natsu and Wendy care for their eggs; Natsu’s eventually hatches into a blue cat, whom he names Happy to symbolize the happiness he will bring others 9 10.

After Gildarts returns, Natsu challenges him and is effortlessly knocked down. He also demands entry into the S-Class Exam, but Makarov tells him he is not strong enough. Gildarts reinforces that the examination requires serious preparation and tells him to keep improving 10 11.

Growing Reputation and the Search for Igneel

By Year 784, Natsu has become known as Salamander, with his rising fame contributing to Fairy Tail’s reputation as Fiore’s strongest guild. He leaves to investigate a report about a Salamander, but returns angry that the lead in Hargeon did not bring him to Igneel. His return coincides with Lucy’s arrival at the guild 19 20.

Eisenwald Incident

Erza recruits Natsu into a team with Xi Feng, Gray, Wendy, and Lucy to investigate Eisenwald. After Xi Feng removes Erigor’s Demon Wind Barrier, Happy carries Natsu after Erigor. Natsu defeats him before the rest of the team arrives 22 23.

Natsu subsequently helps destroy Lullaby with the group’s combined magic. When Xi Feng is arrested over damage connected to the incident, Natsu crashes into the Magic Council chamber to rescue him, although Xi Feng has already been released 24 25.

Unauthorized Galuna Island Mission

Natsu and Happy steal an S-Class request to save Galuna Island and try to recruit Lucy. Xi Feng, Gray, and Wendy follow them, and Xi Feng warns that taking such a mission without permission can lead to expulsion before assuming responsibility for the job 26 27 28.

During the investigation, Natsu breaks the ruins’ floor, exposing the underground chamber containing Deliora. He later pursues Lyon’s followers when they are ordered to kill the islanders. After Xi Feng resolves the island’s apparent curse, Natsu and Happy receive no share of the monetary reward and are punished by Makarov upon returning 28 29 32 33.

Phantom Lord War

Natsu joins Fairy Tail’s retaliatory assault after Gajeel attacks Jade and Troy. Following Makarov’s loss of magical power, he enters Phantom Lord’s Magic Giant with Happy to confront Jose 33 35.

Inside, he defeats Totomaru by overcoming his flame manipulation. Aria then badly injures him and uses Airspace: Metsu to drain his magic. Xi Feng intervenes and defeats Aria, after which Natsu charges into a Dragon Slayer battle against Gajeel. The passages do not establish the outcome of that individual fight 36 37 38.

Tower of Heaven Crisis

Natsu insists on accompanying Erza after learning that Xi Feng has gone alone to the Tower of Heaven. During the voyage, Erza calls on his nose to locate the tower while Wendy treats his sickness 42 43.

After the tower’s destruction leaves Xi Feng’s fate uncertain, Natsu becomes unable to bear waiting and runs out to search for him—only to collide with Xi Feng returning to the guild 45.

Battle of Fairy Tail

When Laxus and the Thunder God Tribe take guild members hostage, Natsu charges Laxus immediately and is knocked unconscious by a lightning bolt. Upon waking, he rushes outside to pursue him as the Thunder Palace threatens Magnolia 47 48.

Relationships

• Happy — Companion whom Natsu hatches and names. Happy carries him into pursuit and battle, follows him on the stolen Galuna Island mission, and worries about his insistence on confronting Jose 10 23 26 35 37.
