Power Progression

Xu Changxing’s Main-Timeline Breakthrough

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Core Formation — Sword Core 43 Uses the sword intent inherited from Li Changge to condense his true essence into a tiny sword-shaped core.
Thunder Sword Core refinement 44 Purple heavenly lightning repeatedly fractures the new core, while sword intent re-forms it. The resulting core incorporates intertwined sword and thundercloud components; no numerical grade is established.
Further minor-realm advancement 61 After killing Wu Chuan, Xu Changxing acknowledges that he advanced through a minor realm during seclusion.
Bottleneck before Core-Breaking Ascension 74 Senses that another simulation would probably take him into Nascent Soul, but hesitates to receive a cultivation infusion immediately before facing heavenly tribulation.
Nascent Soul — departure from Core Formation 74 75 Undergoes Core-Breaking Ascension and exposes his newly formed Nascent Soul to heavenly lightning. Watching elders note that less than a year has passed since he formed his core.

Subsequent Simulated Advancement

These advances occur in a simulation begun after Xu Changxing forms his Thunder Sword Core, not in the main timeline 50.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Core Formation middle stage 50 Reached in month six after repeated battles alongside Li Changge.
Core Formation late stage 50 Reached in year two, month two after fighting through two more secret realms. His unusually solid core subsequently makes ordinary core-breaking methods appear inadequate.

Later Simulated Routes

The following entries belong to separate later simulations and do not constitute a single continuous progression 62 73.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Core Formation late stage through secluded cultivation 62 Reached in month six, after his cultivation repeatedly gathers spiritual energy and thunderclouds above his peak. The breakthrough draws down a sky full of thunderbolts.
Core Formation late stage through secluded cultivation 73 Reached in month six of another simulation. Although confident that he can condense a Nascent Soul directly, he chooses to seek further tempering rather than advance hastily.

Wuyou’s Advancement

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Core Formation 468 Breaks through silently a few months after Xu Changxing resumes closely observing him at Foundation Establishment late stage. The Yangshan Sect discovers his advancement only at an examination a year later.
Core Formation peak 468 Reached smoothly several decades later, without an apparent bottleneck.
Nascent Soul — departure from Core Formation 468 Condenses a Nascent Soul, prompting Tianyuan Old Daoist to recognize his talent, appoint him a sect elder, and provide a secluded Daoist Field.

Formation and Core Quality

Preparing for Core Formation

  • Travel and experience: Xu Changxing repeatedly begins traveling after reaching Foundation Establishment late stage to prepare for core formation 14 16.
  • Refined true essence and insight: In one simulation, battles accumulate sword intent and further condense his true essence before he forms a first-rank core 21.
  • Delaying a breakthrough: Being capable of forming a core does not guarantee the desired grade. Xu Changxing postpones advancement despite confidence that he could obtain a core among the top three grades 16.
  • Treasures: An Immortal Lotus gives Xu Changxing the impression that absorbing it would let him form a core immediately, but he delays because he wants a first-rank Golden Core 35.
  • Soul cultivation: Soul strength has little bearing on the transition from Foundation Establishment to Core Formation. Ordinary cultivators begin deliberately nurturing their souls afterward, in preparation for Nascent Soul 32.
  • Earlier foundations: Xu Changxing later attributes his ability to form a Thunder Sword Core to the exceptionally solid foundation laid by condensing nine cloud patterns during Qi Refining. He identifies this core as one of the successive advantages that eventually make his primordial spirit exceptionally powerful 115.
  • Extended preparation does not ensure the highest grade: In the world where Xu Changxing transmits cultivation teachings to Chi Hu, Chi Hu completes Foundation Establishment with six Cloud Patterns and spends more than a decade honing his late-stage foundation before forming a third-grade core 138.

Grades and Specialized Cores

“Grade” and “rank” are both used to describe Golden Core quality. A first-grade core is not necessarily a sword core: Xu Changxing forms an ordinary first-grade Golden Core in one simulated life and remains dissatisfied with it 16 19 40.

Core Documented Example Formation or Distinguishing Feature
Second-rank Golden Core Xu Changxing, simulated life Forcibly formed during an ambush involving a Nascent Soul-level enemy, allowing him to help the Five Elements Sword Formation restrain it 19.
Ordinary first-grade Golden Core Xu Changxing, rogue-cultivator simulation Formed after six years of secret-realm exploration and life-and-death trials; does not fulfill his ambition to obtain a sword core 40.
First-rank Golden Core through slaughter Xu Changxing, simulated life His true essence rapidly condenses when he understands his own path and enters the Dao through slaughter 35.
Sword Core Xu Changxing, simulated life Condensed after a hundred days seeking enlightenment at his fallen friends’ graves; described as using the core itself as a sword 19.
Thunder Sword Core Xu Changxing, main timeline A purple sword core tempered by heavenly lightning, with an intertwined mass of thunderclouds above it 43 44.
Fifth-rank Golden Core Xu Changxing’s disciple, simulated life Formed in year sixty-eight; Xu Changxing is disappointed by its grade but encourages his disciple 21.
Second-rank Golden Core Xu Changxing’s disciple, later simulated life Formed in year one hundred three, pleasing Xu Changxing; the disciple later achieves Core-Breaking Ascension in year one hundred eighty 52.
First-rank Golden Core Li Jiuzhou, simulated life Formed after inheriting Xu Changxing’s Sword Dao 118.
Third-grade Golden Core Chi Hu Formed in year forty-eight after prolonged preparation at Foundation Establishment late stage, making him the first Core Formation cultivator in that world 138.

Advancement to Nascent Soul

Core-Breaking Ascension

  • Basic transition: The Golden Core is shattered to condense a Nascent Soul. Xu Changxing completes this process in several simulated lives 20 35 36.
  • Core perfection: In the slaughter-path simulation, Xu Changxing spends four months in seclusion before his Golden Core reaches complete perfection and he forms a Slaughter Nascent Soul 35.
  • Mental obstacles: A first-rank core does not guarantee success. In another simulation, Xu Changxing repeatedly fails to form a Nascent Soul because an unresolved emotional knot remains 21.
  • Exceptional core toughness: After obtaining his Thunder Sword Core, his simulated self concludes that ordinary methods probably cannot break it and seeks Nascent Soul-level opponents instead 50.
  • Li Changge’s breakthrough: Sparring with Xu Changxing opens Li Changge’s path to Nascent Soul. His core begins breaking, and his subsequent breakthrough summons a heavenly tribulation that astonishes the watching elders 47 48.
  • Heavenly tribulation is exceptional: The elders regard ordinary Core-Breaking Ascension as too small a transformation to attract heaven and earth’s attention. Li Changge’s tribulation is therefore not presented as a universal requirement for entering Nascent Soul 48.
  • Control before tribulation: Xu Changxing notes that his previous simulated breakthroughs all followed months of tempering and precise mastery of his strength. He fears that receiving Nascent Soul cultivation through an infusion without equivalent coordination could leave him unable to withstand his heavenly tribulation 74.
  • Thunder tempering: During his main-timeline breakthrough, Xu Changxing lets his newly formed Nascent Soul withstand the first tribulation bolt directly. He then withdraws it and meets the stronger second bolt by merging his body with his sword 75.

Combat Capabilities and Limits

  • Realm is not an absolute combat ceiling: Foundation Establishment Xu Changxing can rival weaker Core Formation cultivators with his sword light and, in simulations, kill Core Formation-level demonic beasts 35 39.
  • Swordsmanship can bridge larger gaps: Li Changge’s first-grade Golden Core and exceptional swordsmanship allow him to nearly match some Nascent Soul elders who are less skilled in combat 27.
  • Formation support matters: Before forming his own core, Xu Changxing can unleash seventy to eighty percent of the Five Elements Sword Formation’s power through his solid foundation and cooperation with Core Formation sword cultivators 19.
  • Specialized cores create control problems: Immediately after his breakthrough, Xu Changxing cannot suppress his sword intent and nearly injures another disciple. Sparring with Li Changge later brings his sword core into harmony with his spiritual sense 45 49.
  • Nascent Soul opponents remain dangerous: A Nascent Soul ambush breaks the Five Elements Sword Formation, kills two companions, and forces the survivors to shatter their Golden Cores 19.
  • Sword and lightning techniques: While still at Core Formation, Xu Changxing and Li Changge become one with their swords and fight amid thunderclouds. The lightning generated during their duel strikes Elder Li’s intervening bronze mirror twice and extinguishes its radiance 46.
  • Thunder Sword Core against higher-realm opponents: In a simulation, late-stage Core Formation Xu Changxing relies on his sword core and Thundercloud to fight a Nascent Soul demon for three days and nights without either side prevailing 50.
  • Main-timeline victory over Wu Chuan: Core Formation Xu Changxing overwhelms Wu Chuan’s defenses and ultimately kills him. Wu Chuan possesses a crippled Nascent Soul formed through an evil method, and Xu Changxing explains that his Thunder Sword specifically counters its corpse-tainted nature 56 57 61.
  • Equipment can enable cross-realm victories without erasing numerical disadvantages: In the Xu-family simulation, Foundation Establishment Xu Yuansi uses the flying sword provided by Xu Changxing to kill a Core Formation evil cultivator. Nevertheless, three Core Formation attackers subsequently overwhelm and repeatedly injure him until Xu Changxing intervenes through his divine sense 101.

Role in the Setting Sun Sect

  • Elder qualification: Xu Changxing understands Core Formation to be the minimum cultivation expected of an elder in a sect such as the Setting Sun Sect 11.
  • Administration: Large numbers of Core Formation elders manage the sect’s extensive businesses. The sect leader permits some elders to pursue comfortable lives rather than continued ascetic cultivation 30.
  • Tournament oversight: Core Formation elders attend the Foundation Establishment tournament, evaluate disciples’ foundations and swordsmanship, and wager spirit stones and treasures on the results 24 28 30 32.
  • Liu Chenyu: A Core Formation middle-stage elder whose reputation benefits greatly from his disciples’ achievements. After receiving the secret-realm harvest, he expects further seclusion to let him reach late stage 27 44.
  • Guidance for prospective breakthroughs: Zhou Lechi has long been at Foundation Establishment late stage, but Liu Chenyu believes his comprehension is insufficient for an immediate breakthrough. After Xu Changxing forms his sword core, Liu Chenyu asks him to guide his second senior brother 50.
  • Witnesses to exceptional advancement: Core Formation elders struggle to believe that Xu Changxing can display such strength only a few months after Foundation Establishment. Their astonishment recurs when he forms a Nascent Soul less than a year after entering Core Formation 47 75.
  • Artifact-refining expertise and its limits: Core Formation elders observe the Greenwood Sword’s transformation at Blazing Fire Peak. Its unusual tempering through Earthfire and heavenly lightning exceeds their experience and leads them to speculate about the lost Ancient Living Sword Method 66.

Status in Other Sects and Worlds

  • Blood Shadow Sect: The sect can assemble several hundred Core Formation elders alongside thirteen Nascent Soul cultivators. Despite their numbers, they surrender their Storage Bags and treasures to Xu Changxing, then scour their own sect for additional resources in return for a thirty-percent share 106.
  • Yangshan Sect’s world: Core Formation marks a fairly accomplished cultivator. Even sects overseen by Spirit Transformation Ancestors may accept cultivators of this realm as core disciples 468.
  • Resources affect a breakthrough’s significance: Wuyou’s belatedly discovered Core Formation breakthrough attracts little attention because Xu Changxing’s abundant spirit pills have accelerated the Yangshan Sect’s overall cultivation. Several existing Core Formation inner disciples have already advanced to Nascent Soul 468.

Interaction with the Cultivation Simulator

  • Higher operating costs: Simulation costs rise with Xu Changxing’s cultivation realm. He fears that advancing too quickly into Core Formation could leave him unable to afford simulations during emergencies 7 37.
  • Documented Core Formation simulation cost: After forming his Thunder Sword Core, Xu Changxing spends ten thousand low-grade spirit stones to begin a simulation 50.
  • Rewards do not always match peak attainment: A simulation that reaches Nascent Soul offers Core Formation late-stage cultivation rather than the full simulated realm 20.
  • Core quality affects reward choices: Xu Changxing hesitates to accept late-stage cultivation when it would give him an ordinary first-grade Golden Core instead of the sword core he wants 40 42.
  • Infusion and breakthrough risks: The possibility of receiving a higher realm does not remove the need to control its power. Before his main-timeline Core-Breaking Ascension, Xu Changxing specifically considers the danger of facing tribulation immediately after a cultivation infusion 74.
  • Later explanation of cultivation rewards: After fully refining the Tianyan Pearl, Xu Changxing learns that the cultivation bestowed by simulator rewards is actually Heaven and Earth Origin stolen by the pearl. At low realms, even a wisp can multiply his cultivation severalfold, although its effectiveness diminishes as his realm rises 401.
