Lan Daozi was Sword Wielding Elder Wei Shanjun's Core Disciple, though he was later revealed to be Wei's half-grandson. His father is Demon Venerable Lou Ye, the sole Mahayana devil cultivator among the Five Demon Sects, while his mother Ru Yuan was imprisoned at the Saintess Palace because she possessed a Heavenly Demon Demon Core. 132 135 166 181

Before his demonization, he remained at the Snow Flame Sect despite recruitment attempts from the Dao Alliance Headquarters. He disliked office and responsibility, preferring a quiet life devoted to sword practice. 33

During the Sword Inheritance Assembly, Lan Daozi drew the Five Directions Demon Slaying Sword, a demonic sword, despite Xiao Bai's warning. The act triggered Demonic Obstruction and his transformation into a demon. 93 94
