Background / History

Student Years and Restrictions

Shoko attended Jujutsu High alongside Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto. The three spent three years as classmates, and she graduated nearly two years before Sherlock’s arrival. During their school days, she was usually the quiet listener at drinking gatherings and frequently went drinking with Geto without Gojo, whose alcohol tolerance was extremely low 5 10 48 49.

Her ability to output Reverse Cursed Technique made her valuable to Jujutsu Society but severely restricted her freedom. While she was a student, the authorities effectively kept her under house arrest at Jujutsu High in the name of safety. Gojo later helped her parents relocate to China, while Shoko remained in Japan and explained that her healing ability prevented her from leaving the country 104.

Sherlock’s Arrival and Medical Training

Shoko first appears delivering documents to Masamichi Yaga, then immediately spreads the news that Gojo has been taken to a police station. When she subsequently encounters Gojo behaving suspiciously with Sherlock in a dorm room, she photographs the scene and calls Yaga before introducing herself as the infirmary physician 2 5.

At this stage, Shoko is studying for her medical licensing examination. Sherlock occasionally assists in the infirmary, where she uses autopsies to teach him medical knowledge. She also rewards his errands with embarrassing stories and photographs from Gojo’s school days 6.

Gojo’s training repeatedly sends Sherlock to her for treatment. After Sherlock’s first major mission, she oversees his recovery from a three-day loss of consciousness, fever, rabies, and tetanus. Her workload becomes especially exhausting during his training with Dragon Claw and the Thunderfire Prayer Beads, prompting her to beg him to learn Reverse Cursed Technique himself 9 15 53.

Despite her complaints, Shoko willingly joins some of their schemes. She helps arrange an unauthorized Hokkaido vacation by drugging Yaga, insisting beforehand that she will not accept the blame 17.

Reconnecting with Geto

When Gojo and Sherlock flee a hot spring inn after antagonizing Geto, Shoko remains behind and invites her former classmate to drink. Their conversation briefly recreates their school-day friendship. She tells him about life at Jujutsu High, the higher-ups’ interference, and Gojo’s new disciple before falling asleep. Geto thanks her for caring for him and Gojo, but apologizes that he may no longer be able to turn back 48 49.

Shoko also helps Sherlock understand Gojo’s unresolved pain. After Gojo leaves his injured student unvisited for three days, she explains that he is angry with himself for nearly failing to protect Sherlock, just as he could not preserve his friendship with Geto. She urges Sherlock to trust Gojo and stop being afraid of relying on him 37.

Convention and Winter Holidays

Shoko gains authority over Gojo’s promised convention costume after negotiations between teacher and disciple. Bribed with Cohiba cigars and stolen liquor, she prepares his elaborate Tamamo-no-Mae outfit and attends in her own green-haired cat costume. The convention eventually gives Shoko, Gojo, and Geto a brief reunion: they change into matching anime-print shirts, take a photograph, and walk around together 88 89 91 95.

During the winter holidays, Shoko stays at Sherlock’s house. Members of the Three Great Families reduce their demands for trivial treatments because they fear Sherlock could secretly place teleportation beacons on them. Their avoidance gives her an unusually peaceful vacation, during which she tells Sherlock about her parents and her inability to return home for New Year 99 104.

China Exchange and Sherlock’s Return

Shoko brings Megumi Fushiguro and Tsumiki to Gojo’s birthday gathering after spending several days arranging their attendance. She later accompanies Gojo and Sherlock to China for Sherlock’s exchange assignment. There, she meets Gu Yaoyao, whose appearance closely resembles her green-haired convention costume 140 146.

During Sherlock’s two-and-a-half-year absence, Shoko draws up renovations for his house, Gojo funds them, and Geto handles construction. Her responsibility for the project explains her guilty attempts to avoid Sherlock’s questions when he returns. She later defends the alterations as practical improvements and compensation for using his home as their gathering place 153 155 158.

Mental-Health Work and Geto’s Recovery

By the later Kyoto Goodwill Event, Shoko has obtained a mental-health practice license. After Sherlock’s sewage-flood disaster, she counsels Kinji Hakari and Kirara Hoshi while struggling with her own revulsion at the experience 187.

Her professional knowledge also allows her to identify problems in Geto’s mental state more precisely than Sherlock can. She studies documents about the Time Vessel Association late into the night, then privately confronts Geto during a gathering at Sherlock’s house. She urges him to abandon the association, save people he believes deserve saving, and seek atonement rather than death 194 198.

This marks a change from her earlier habit of waiting behind the lines for injured companions—or their bodies—to return. Geto recognizes that she has become willing to ask directly about his troubles, while the narration credits Sherlock with helping her take a more active role in saving her friends 194 198 199.

Appearance

Shoko has a delicate-looking face, a slightly long bob, and a tear mole beneath one eye. She wears a white coat while working in the infirmary 5 16 50.

  • Dark circles: Later described as resembling natural smoky eye makeup 153.
  • Green-haired convention costume: Dyes her hair green and adds cat ears for the “Green-Haired Old Cat Lady” cosplay 91.
  • Later convention look: Appears with red hair and a rock-inspired outfit when Sherlock returns from China 153.
  • Frequent accessory: Often carries or smokes a cigarette, including during conversations, breaks, and social outings 11 48 95.

Personality

Shoko’s usual manner is calm, languid, and dryly sarcastic. She ignores Gojo’s exaggerated behavior, openly insults him, and has little patience for injuries caused by his and Sherlock’s feuds. Her concern often appears as strict treatment orders or angry reprimands rather than reassurance 5 15 35.

She is also an enthusiastic gossip and an occasional accomplice. She preserves compromising photographs, shares embarrassing stories, joins the Hokkaido abduction scheme, and accepts bribes to arrange Gojo’s cosplay. Despite teasing Gojo and Geto about their relationship, she is secretly their biggest shipper and a source of rumors about them 2 6 17 89 91.

Her detached exterior conceals considerable vulnerability. Sherlock considers her the most fragile of the three former classmates, while her private attachment to them is reflected in the Gojo and Geto dolls she stitches together so that they hold hands. Her later efforts to help Geto show her becoming more willing to act on that attachment openly 103 108 194 198.

Abilities & Skills

Reverse Cursed Technique

Shoko has possessed Reverse Cursed Technique since birth and can project its positive energy outward to heal other people. The narration uses her as the benchmark for complete utilization of the positive energy produced by reversal 50 66 67.

  • Trauma treatment: Repairs Sherlock’s repeated training injuries, including severe facial damage and fractured fingers 35 49 50.
  • Neurological treatment: Treats Sherlock after Gojo’s brief Domain Expansion leaves him drooling and incapacitated 74 75.
  • Disease suppression: Continuously treats Sherlock after exposure to Black Death, dengue fever, and radiation sickness until he can sustain his own recovery 118 119.
  • Emergency stabilization: Saves a critically injured boy during a secret summons, though the ten-minute window prevents her from fully restoring him 132.
  • Self-treatment: Refreshes her legs with Reverse Cursed Technique while fleeing the Kyoto sewage flood 182.
  • Offensive application: Coats a punch with Reverse Cursed Technique, strengthening the blow while healing Gojo as she strikes him. She first has him disable Limitless 15.

Medicine and Patient Care

Shoko combines supernatural healing with conventional medical treatment and assessment 6 15 35 51.

  • Performs autopsies and teaches Sherlock basic medical knowledge through them 6.
  • Prescribes vaccines, recovery periods, and restrictions on strenuous activity 15.
  • Requires splints to stabilize Sherlock’s fingers even after healing the fractures 35.
  • Evaluates the injury risks of experimental combat equipment, warning against explosive brass knuckles before Sherlock can heal himself 51.
  • Treats external training injuries within ten minutes during the students’ intensive combat schedule 174.

Mental-Health Care

Shoko later gains a license to practice in mental health and applies that training to both students and former classmates 187 194.

  • Counsels Hakari and Kirara after the Kyoto disaster 187.
  • Uses her training to regulate her own response to the same incident 187.
  • Studies the Time Vessel Association’s activities to understand Geto’s condition, then challenges his guilt-driven behavior directly 194 198.

Teaching and Technical Knowledge

Shoko understands Reverse Cursed Technique instinctively, but struggles to explain its practical execution to others. Her instruction reduces the process to making cursed energy go “whoosh” and then “hoo,” leaving Sherlock bewildered 50.

  • Medical resources: Her medical books are later supplied to Sherlock to improve his understanding of healing and energy utilization 72.
  • Cursed-tool knowledge: Recognizes Dragon Claw’s importance as a Gojo Clan heirloom and understands its potential value to Limitless users without the Six Eyes 53.
  • Teaching limitation: Gives Sherlock the same “No talent!” assessment she previously gave Gojo and Geto when they failed to understand her explanation 50.

  • Suguru Geto — Former classmate and drinking companion. She maintains their personal connection after his defection and later pushes him toward survival, accountability, and redemption 48 49 121 198.
  • Sherlock — Patient, junior, friend, and occasional infirmary assistant. His recklessness burdens her workload, but his friendship gives her respite from institutional demands and helps her become more proactive 6 40 53 104 199.
  • Masamichi Yaga — Former teacher and school principal. She reports Gojo’s misconduct to him, yet also helps drug and abduct him for a vacation 5 17.
