History

Earlier Continental War

More than four thousand years before the main story, the Sun Moon Empire used Soul Tools to sweep across much of the Douluo Continent. The Soul Master sects of the three great empires ultimately united with Shrek Academy and forced it back to the original Sun Moon Continent. Huo Yuhao argued that no individual empire could have defeated its Soul Engineer legions alone 30.

During that period, Sun Moon excavated Yu Xiaogang’s grave under the pretext of searching for the divine teacher’s inheritance. It found nothing, but the act enraged Shrek Academy and drew previously reluctant participants into the war 92.

Coup and Border Militarization

Six years before the discussion of He Caitou’s identity, a coup apparently wiped out the previous imperial household overnight. The official explanation was food poisoning; the new emperor claimed that, as the only remaining prince, he had been compelled to assume power. The former household had included seven princesses and Crown Prince Xu He 86 164.

The new ruler stationed troops along the Heaven Dou and Star Luo borders, seeking a major victory to consolidate his reign. Further troop movements prompted Heaven Dou officials to warn that Sun Moon might attempt to assassinate Huo Yuhao before his potential could mature 29 56.

Holy Spirit Cult Controversy

The Evil Soul Masters’ possession of a Sealing God Platform led Du Busi to suspect longstanding cooperation with, or deep infiltration of, Sun Moon. Heaven Dou subsequently deployed Shrek elites to the border to pressure the empire into investigating Evil Soul Masters within its territory 64 66.

Mingdu initially denied that the Holy Spirit Cult existed inside the empire and accused Heaven Dou of military provocation. It later announced that its domestic extermination campaign was complete and described the cult as an overseas organization. Meanwhile, opposing commanders noticed that Sun Moon’s frontline troops appeared to have been replaced by weaker forces 67.

The connection extended into the imperial household. Kong Deming knew that Xu Tianran had cooperated with the Holy Spirit Cult to poison the emperor, but feared that exposing or attacking the cult would provoke a devastating rebellion 201.

Xu Tianran’s Regency

After the empire’s cooperation with the Holy Spirit Cult was exposed, the gravely ill emperor collapsed and ceased managing state affairs. Crown Prince Xu Tianran became regent while Heaven Dou’s emergence as a power protected by three Limit Douluos intensified Sun Moon’s strategic insecurity 111.

Xu Tianran accelerated research into Level 9 Fixed Soul Guidance Shells and Humanoid Soul Tools. Suspecting that Su Ji was the Snow Empress, he also ordered death-sworn warriors to carry powerful shells into the Far North and create chaos, despite Jing Hongchen’s warning that this could create another formidable enemy 111.

Tournament and Succession Crisis

At the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Fighting Tournament, Sun Moon’s academies coordinated a public demonstration of military firepower. Mingdu Soul Engineer Academy used prohibited Six-Barrel Small Soul Cannons against Shrek, accepting disqualification in exchange for showing spectators that Soul Tools could suppress a Soul Saint 137 138.

The tournament also exposed He Caitou as Xu He, the supposedly dead former crown prince. His Sun Martial Soul conclusively established his imperial identity. Jing Hongchen and Kong Deming ordered his rescue, judging that abandoning him would destroy the imperial family’s remaining credibility among Sun Moon’s citizens 163 164.

The reigning emperor died after learning that Xu He had survived. Xu Tianran’s princely brothers secretly protected and supplied Xu He, using his claim to challenge the regent while preserving their own chances of eventually taking the throne. Existing uprisings gained a recognizable figure around whom to rally 165.

Far North Disaster

Tian Meng discovered and destroyed a concealed Sun Moon death-soldier squad preparing to detonate Fixed Soul Cannon Shells in the Far North. He then crossed into the empire and detonated his million-year origin, raising an Ice Sea tsunami that submerged the land bordering the Far North 167 168.

The catastrophe worsened domestic unrest. Xu He’s supporters blamed Xu Tianran’s rule for the disaster, while Xu Tianran’s faction portrayed Xu He’s return from Shrek as the cause of heavenly punishment. Both sides used the event to compete for public support 171.

Lin Yi’s Infiltration

Huo Yuhao exploited the succession struggle to infiltrate the empire as Lin Yi, a young Soul Engineer supposedly discovered in Aor City. His Icefire Creation Furnace and unconventional refining methods attracted Kong Deming, who brought him to Mingdu, appointed him a researcher and offering, and promised protection from factional politics 191 192.

Lin Yi’s inventions persuaded the empire to provide exceptional resources and research access. Both political camps courted him, while Huo Yuhao secretly transmitted academy layouts, high-level design principles, and Soul Tool research to Heaven Dou through Electrolux 195 199 200.

Purge and Mingdu Explosion

Qian Duoduo and the Zhongli brothers joined Xu He’s camp, prompting Kong Deming to investigate possible Holy Spirit Cult involvement. After evidence was presented against Xu He, the Offering Hall mobilized to purge his supporting princes and settle the succession in Xu Tianran’s favor 200 201 206.

Huo Yuhao and Electrolux exploited the purge by unleashing an undead army and infiltrating the capital’s arsenals. The resulting explosions detonated sixteen Level 9 Fixed Soul Guidance Shells beneath the Imperial Soul Engineering Academy, destroyed both Soul Engineer academies, and devastated a third of Mingdu. Xu He died in the blast 206 208 210.

Public outrage made Xu Tianran’s position untenable. The Offering Hall installed Xu Tianyuan as emperor and publicly staged Xu Tianran’s execution using a masked substitute. In secret, it kept Xu Tianran alive with his Martial Soul and Soul Power sealed, hoping eventually to preserve his inherited dragon Martial Soul through descendants 210 212.

Creation Hall and the Loss of Lin Yi

The empire built Creation Hall to make Lin Yi the visible symbol of national recovery. Its furnace-shaped architecture, ice-and-fire stairways, and monumental Soul Tool statue represented the hope that his research would restore Sun Moon’s technological supremacy 212 213.

During Xu Tianyuan’s coronation, Huo Yuhao staged an apparent refining accident that seemingly killed Lin Yi and Xuan Ziwen. Their supposed deaths shattered the ceremony’s promise of renewal and left Mingdu in mourning. Both actually departed for Heaven Dou 214 215 216.

Final War and Conquest

As Huo Yuhao’s strength increased, Kong Deming warned that every delay brought Sun Moon closer to destruction. Star Luo offered its full support for war, and the two empires formed an alliance against Heaven Dou 295 316.

Sun Moon diverted nearly a third of its forces toward the Far North through the Ice Sea. Its fleet was ambushed by Heaven Dou, Far North, and sea Soul Beast forces; Qingyao seized control of its metal equipment, and the Polar Tai Tan cannons destroyed the remaining warships 316 317.

On land, Heaven Dou crushed the allied central army. Xu Tianling lost an arm and his Level 9 Fixed Soul Guidance Shells before the surviving troops surrendered. Heaven Dou’s armies then advanced toward Mingdu from multiple directions 318 323.

By the final siege, Sun Moon had exhausted its reserves, with its Fixed Soul Cannon Shells having emptied the treasury. Mingdu fell to the allied human and Demon Beast forces. The Azure Dragon King killed Xu Tianyuan, and the remaining imperial family was captured, completing continental unification 324 325.

Military and Technology

Soul Tool Doctrine

  • Massed firepower: Soul Engineer formations used concentrated cannon attacks to suppress stronger individual Soul Masters. Ten Level 4 engineers equipped with Six-Barrel Small Soul Cannons could suppress thousands of troops within a limited area 137.
  • Technological emphasis: Sun Moon’s research generally favored energy application and mechanical structures, contrasting with Heaven Dou’s later emphasis on integrating Martial Souls, forging, and Soul Tools 205.
  • Alloy expertise: The empire excelled in alloy technology 217.
  • Expert-dependent production: Traditional Soul Engineers mastered design, forging, and engraving themselves; the academy maintained a more rigid hierarchy than Heaven Dou’s collaborative research system 85 216.
  • Strategic limitation: Despite its military and technological lead, Sun Moon lacked Heaven Dou’s top-level combat strength. Developing weapons capable of threatening Limit Douluos remained exceptionally difficult 111.
