Jade poked her head out from behind Wangchuan. Her eyes lit up at the sight of that green figure.
"It's you!"
"Quetzalcoatl!"
"How are you alive again? And what are you doing here?!"
Quetzalcoatl turned his head, his amber slit pupils fixed on Jade.
"Because I felt your summons."
Jade blinked.
"Summons? When? How come I didn't know?"
Quetzalcoatl offered no explanation. He turned to Kali, who had already climbed to her feet.
Kali fixed her blood-red eyes on him. Her three arms rose at once, and dark red flames flared anew.
"Destruction."
Quetzalcoatl spread his wings, white light shining across his green feathers.
"I know you, Kali."
"The goddess of destruction and rebirth."
"But you won't destroy her today."
His slit pupils contracted.
"Because she is the Maya goddess."
"My mission is to protect her."
Behind him, Jade froze for a moment, then shouted at his back.
"Hey! Don't make stuff up! What Maya goddess? I'm just Jade!"
Quetzalcoatl did not turn around, but the corners of his mouth curved upward again.
"You are."
"You simply don't know it yet."
Then he charged.
Green light and dark red light collided above the rooftop.
Every beat of Quetzalcoatl's wings whipped up a gust that forced Kali's flames back half a foot.
Kali slashed down with her sword. Quetzalcoatl twisted aside, his wing feathers brushing the blade, and shredded feathers drifted through the air.
She hurled her discus. Quetzalcoatl batted it back with a wing. It spun once through the air and smashed into the nearby water tower, which burst apart, sending a column of water skyward.
The trident thrust toward him. Quetzalcoatl ducked, then kicked Kali in the chest, sending her flying over ten meters.
