| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 3-level cursed energy | 13 | Chi estimates Nanami’s cursed energy at Grade 3 standard. His Ratio Technique nevertheless wounds the Semi-Grade 1 attacker. This is an opponent’s assessment, not a stated official rank. |
| Cursed-tool combat | 26 27 | Channels cursed energy through Chingetsu’s gifted blunt blade and destroys a Semi-Grade 3 spider cursed spirit with one strike. |
| First-year practical training | 34 35 | Shatters Gojo’s table knife to create an opening, then releases a large blade of condensed cursed energy. Gojo counters with Blue and wins the match. |
| Improved energy management | 48 | Unlike his entrance-assessment attack, his committed strike against the hospital monster leaves enough energy to intercept a hidden shikigami and briefly fight Hayato Zenin. He still approaches exhaustion afterward. |
Background / History
Life at Dawn Bar
Before meeting Chingetsu, Nanami lived on leftover food, convenience-store beer, and snacks, and believed his life had no worth. Chingetsu fed him Spanish garlic shrimp when he was down and out, then employed him at Dawn Bar. The job provided good pay, benefits, and a renewed reason to enjoy life 3 26 30.
Nanami initially wanted to remain an ordinary worker and live peacefully. Chingetsu taught him bartending, while Nanami handled much of the bar’s daily work and served regular visitors such as Satoru Gojo 3.
Chi’s Attack
When Chi enclosed Dawn Bar in a Curtain, Nanami ambushed him with Ratio Technique: Collapse. Although vastly outmatched, he inflicted a shallow wound on Chi’s neck. After learning that Chi wanted Chingetsu, Nanami sought an opportunity to escape and warn his employer, whom he still believed to be an ordinary person 13.
Chi repeatedly struck him with Black Palm, draining his cursed energy until he could barely defend himself. Chingetsu rescued him just before a fatal attack, killed Chi, and took Nanami to a hospital 13 14.
During recovery, Nanami told Satoru Gojo that he wanted to enter Jujutsu High. His unspoken motivation was to stop being a burden and become dependable like Chingetsu. Despite his own dislike of the school, Chingetsu supported Nanami’s choice 15 25.
Entrance Assessment
Nanami attended the examination with his arm still bandaged. Other applicants avoided teaming up with him, but Yu Haibara approached him without treating his injury as a liability. Haibara’s desire to protect his younger sister helped Nanami clarify his own wish to protect Dawn Bar and keep pace with Chingetsu 26.
After killing a spider cursed spirit, Nanami and Haibara reached a stronger cockroach-like spirit holding Kana hostage. The creature opened the route to the rooftop, presenting a choice between abandoning her and risking a fight. Nanami refused to accept passage as a handout from a curse and committed himself to attacking 27 28.
Gojo stopped his blade before it landed. Nanami lost consciousness from the expenditure of cursed energy, but he and Haibara were selected as the new students. The cockroach spirit belonged to Suguru Geto and had been part of the assessment 28.
Chingetsu celebrated his admission by cooking Spanish garlic lobster at his hospital bedside. The meal recalled their first meeting and reinforced Nanami’s desire to protect the ordinary happiness he had found 30.
Enrollment and Practical Training
Masamichi Yaga assigned Nanami to Satoru Gojo, while Haibara was assigned to Geto. After leaving the hospital, Nanami arrived at Jujutsu High and began practical combat training 29 31 33.
Against Gojo, Nanami compensated for the difference in strength by targeting his opponent’s table knife rather than Gojo himself. Destroying it produced a brief opening for an all-out slash, but Gojo used Blue to dismantle the attack. Both Gojo and Yaga praised his performance, and Shoko Ieiri healed his injuries afterward 34 35.
Assassination Attempt and Hospital Mission
Nanami accompanied Gojo to the alley where a mackerel cursed spirit had nearly killed Haibara. Gojo identified human involvement and warned both first-years that their enemies included people as well as curses. The incident, an assassination attempt involving Zenin Clan agents, deepened Nanami’s contempt for the higher-ups 43 44.
Gojo subsequently sent Nanami and Haibara to investigate disappearances at a hospital while observing from a distance. Inside, Nanami recognized cleanly severed human remains as evidence of a curse user’s involvement and kept Haibara focused despite their anger 46 47.
Working together, they beheaded a poisonous monster assembled from human remains. Nanami then intercepted the Earwig Shikigami emerging from its corpse, but the ensuing fight with Hayato Zenin exhausted his remaining energy. Gojo intervened before Hayato could kill him 48 49.
Hayato sacrificed himself to summon a giant spider shikigami. Its sonic attack ruptured Nanami’s and Haibara’s eardrums before Gojo destroyed it with Blue 49.
Appearance
- Hands: Described as slender, with practiced, precise movements while preparing drinks 3 13.
- Clothing: Wears a loose coat during the entrance assessment and a school uniform during the hospital mission 26 47.
- Injuries: Attends the entrance examination with a heavily bandaged arm; later uses the bandages to secure his blade to his palm 26 28.
Personality
Nanami is quiet, composed, and mature beyond his age, speaking in a soft, gentle voice. His dry complaints about work and overtime coexist with a strong work ethic: even while protesting Chingetsu’s demands, he immediately prepares the requested drink 3.
His loyalty to Chingetsu rests on gratitude rather than obligation alone. Dawn Bar gave him stability and a renewed attachment to life, and his decision to become stronger centers on protecting that happiness. During training, he worries less about losing than about disappointing Chingetsu 26 30 33 35.
Nanami favors caution and clear judgment over impulsiveness. He recognizes danger before Haibara rushes into it, ignores Kana’s attempt to secure his protection through flattery, and insists that anger must not dictate decisions on a mission. His composure does not mean indifference: he openly acknowledges his fury at the hospital victims’ treatment 27 47.
He finds Gojo frivolous and unreliable in everyday situations, yet trusts him when lives are at stake. After witnessing the attack on Haibara, he also begins to recognize the burdens Gojo carries 44 46.
Abilities & Skills
Ratio Technique
Nanami divides a target’s length and forcibly creates a weak point at a seven-to-three ratio 13.
- Can target different measurements rather than only overall height or arm span 13.
- Works on inanimate objects as well as living opponents 13 34.
- Allows him to injure a stronger opponent, demonstrated against Chi 13.
- Can be strengthened by revealing its workings to an opponent; Nanami uses this tactic while seeking a chance to escape Chi 13.
Ratio Technique: Collapse
Nanami applies his technique through committed strikes, using either his hand or his short blade 13 27.
- Splits the entrance examination’s spider cursed spirit in two 27.
- Breaks Gojo’s table knife, creating an opening despite the disparity between them 34.
- Beheads the hospital’s flesh monster after Haibara holds it in position 48.
Cursed Energy Control and Swordsmanship
Nanami channels blue cursed energy into his weapon and can concentrate it into a powerful blade-shaped attack 26 35.
- Combines reverse-grip blade attacks, kicks, repositioning, and close observation during combat 34.
- Uses a cursed-energy-driven swing to generate wind and temporarily scatter poisonous gas 47.
- Covers his eyes against poison and relies on Haibara’s voice to time his finishing attack 47 48.
- Heavy attacks can severely deplete his reserves; he faints during the entrance assessment and nearly exhausts himself against Hayato 28 48.
- Gojo promises to teach him Black Flash, but the supplied chapters do not confirm that he learns it 46.
Tactical Analysis
Nanami looks for exploitable weaknesses while conserving enough awareness to anticipate further threats 34 47 48.
- Identifies the hospital monster’s heavily protected head as its likely weak point 47.
- Infers human involvement from the clean cuts on the hospital victims’ remains 47.
- Keeps energy in reserve to intercept the Earwig Shikigami after the apparent end of the fight 48.
Bartending
Trained by Chingetsu, Nanami prepares cocktails and coffee with practiced precision 3.
- Stirs ice silently and pours liquor evenly 3.
- Receives praise from Chingetsu for his cocktails and from Gojo for his coffee 3.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Curse-marked blunt short blade — A gift from Chingetsu before the entrance examination. It qualifies as a cursed tool and serves as Nanami’s principal weapon for channeling Ratio Technique 26 34.

- Improvised cloth blindfold — Torn from his school uniform to protect his eyes from poisonous gas during the hospital battle 47.

- Shoko Ieiri — Heals Nanami and Haibara with Reverse Cursed Technique after practical training 35.
- Utahime Iori — A Dawn Bar customer whose drunken behavior troubles him; later recognizes him at Jujutsu High 13 35.

Trivia
- The author identifies dissatisfaction with Nanami’s death in the original work as one of the motivations for writing the novel 37.
