Background
As a child, before his younger sister was born, Haibara accidentally made eye contact with a cursed spirit. It attacked him and nearly swallowed him before a sorcerer from Jujutsu High intervened. The encounter left a scar on his chest 26.
Haibara sought admission to Jujutsu High so he could become strong enough to protect his sister. Rather than have her fight curses herself, he wanted her to enjoy an ordinary, happy life 26.
Appearance
- Hair: Black, worn in a bowl cut 26.
- Distinguishing mark: A chest scar from the cursed spirit attack he survived as a child 26.
Personality
Haibara is energetic, approachable, and openly enthusiastic. During the entrance examination, he befriends the injured Kento Nanami after other applicants avoid him, praising Nanami’s determination rather than treating his bandaged arm as a liability. Nanami recognizes his desire to help others as genuine 26.
His protective instincts often override caution. He places himself ahead of Nanami during dangerous encounters and refuses to abandon a hostage even when doing so would let him finish the examination. Nevertheless, he gradually learns to assess his surroundings and enemy attacks under Nanami’s influence 26 27 28 43.
Haibara readily admires others, especially his seniors, and tends to interpret their behavior generously. When Gojo leaves the first-years to investigate the hospital, Haibara concludes that he is thoughtfully giving them an opportunity to train. His enthusiasm also extends to food: he cries over Chingetsu’s cooking and competes with Gojo at a sushi restaurant 30 45 46.
His compassion makes deliberate cruelty especially difficult for him to accept. At the hospital, he becomes furious over mutilated human remains and struggles to believe a human could be responsible. He eventually reins in his anger after Nanami warns that losing his judgment would endanger them both 47.
Abilities & Skills
Cursed-Energy Reinforcement
Haibara fights primarily through close-range strikes reinforced with cursed energy 26 43.
- Targets the spider cursed spirit’s joints with repeated punches during the entrance examination 26.
- Breaks an arm off the mackerel cursed spirit with a forceful punch 43.
- Concentrates all his cursed energy into his arms to restrain and lift the hospital’s flesh monster, allowing Nanami to finish his attack 48.
- Has limited offensive power against tougher opponents: his initial attacks cannot fatally injure either the spider or the mackerel spirit 26 27 43.
Physical Ability and Evasion
- Possesses physical abilities beyond those of ordinary people, including the agility to clear the hospital’s high perimeter wall 46.
- Uses twisting movements, backflips, and low dodges to evade the mackerel spirit’s grasping arms 43.
- Continues fighting after the flesh monster throws him aside, returning to prevent it from reaching Nanami 48.
Combat Judgment and Teamwork
- Learns to analyze combat information through Nanami’s example, choosing to draw the mackerel spirit away from a crowded street before fighting 43.
- Attempts to contact Geto for help when the mackerel spirit proves too strong; the spirit seizes and destroys his phone 43.
- Follows Nanami’s plan to distract the flesh monster, then physically holds it in place when distraction alone is insufficient 47 48.
Unnamed Cursed Technique
- His cursed technique is described as ordinary, but its name and mechanics are not explained 43 48.
- Haibara considers both his technique and his barely sufficient cursed energy inadequate against the mackerel spirit 43.
Relationships
- Younger sister — His central reason for becoming a sorcerer; he wants to spare her the terror he experienced as a child 26.
- Kento Nanami — Classmate, friend, and frequent combat partner. Haibara trusts his judgment and calls him “Nanamin.” Nanami repeatedly protects him, while Haibara risks himself to give Nanami openings in battle 26 27 46 47 48.
- Suguru Geto — Assigned mentor and practical-training opponent. Haibara admires his knowledge and recognizes the strength of his cursed spirits after their sparring session 29 33 35.
- Satoru Gojo — Senior and rescuer whom Haibara openly admires. Gojo saves him from the mackerel spirit and supervises his first hospital mission 30 43 44 46 49.
- Gojo Chingetsu — Nanami’s employer, whose cooking leaves Haibara tearfully impressed during Nanami’s admission celebration 30.
- Shoko Ieiri — Senior who heals Haibara’s training injuries with Reverse Cursed Technique 35.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Entrance Examination
- Haibara approaches the isolated Nanami and declares them teammates. When a spider cursed spirit appears, he charges first to shield his injured partner, but Nanami ultimately exorcises it with Ratio Technique: Collapse 26 27.
- Nanami stops him from rushing into a stronger cockroach-like spirit near the rooftop. After it captures Kana and offers the candidates a route past it, Haibara remains ready to fight rather than leave her behind 27 28.
- Gojo and Geto end the staged confrontation and select Haibara and Nanami as Jujutsu High’s new students 28.
Enrollment and Practical Training
- Masamichi Yaga assigns Haibara to Geto’s guidance. Haibara later visits Nanami in the hospital, where they celebrate their admission with food prepared by Chingetsu 29 30.
- On arriving at Jujutsu High, Haibara is frightened by the campus’s eerie atmosphere. Geto explains that stored cursed objects and the school’s barrier account for its unusual surroundings 33.
- Haibara faces Geto in practical combat training and emerges badly bruised after ten minutes. Yaga commends both first-years, and Shoko heals their injuries 34 35.
Mackerel Cursed Spirit Attack
- Haibara arranges a sushi meal to thank Nanami for helping him pass the examination. Before entering the restaurant, he sees a mackerel-shaped cursed spirit emerging from its sign and lures it away from the customers 42 43.
- Despite breaking one of its arms, he is overwhelmed after it grows additional limbs. Gojo and Nanami arrive just as it is about to eat him 43.
- Gojo identifies the attack as the work of someone controlling the spirit, drives off the Zenin Clan operative behind it, and destroys the curse. He warns the first-years that humans can also be their enemies 44.
- The subsequent meal ends with Haibara unable to cover the bill after an eating competition with Gojo; Nanami pays instead 45 46.
Hospital Investigation
- Haibara and Nanami investigate disappearances at a hospital while Gojo observes from a distance. They encounter weak fly head curses before discovering mutilated bodies near the basement 46 47.
- Against a monster assembled from human remains, Haibara provides the distraction Nanami needs to prepare a decisive slash. When it turns toward Nanami, Haibara grabs and lifts it despite taking further blows, enabling Nanami to behead it 47 48.
- Hayato Zenin emerges after the monster’s defeat and attacks them. Nanami pulls Haibara clear of shikigami fragments before confronting the curse user 48.
- Gojo intervenes when Nanami is nearly killed. Hayato sacrifices himself to become a giant spider shikigami; its sonic attack ruptures both first-years’ eardrums before Gojo destroys it with Blue 49.
Notable Quotes
“I just want my adorable little sister to live an ordinary, happy life.” 26
“You bastard, don’t make me break my promise to my friend!” 48
Trivia
- The Nanami-focused passage in Chapter 38 recalls Haibara dying to save him, but the author explicitly identifies that passage as Nanami’s fate in the manga and expresses a wish to give the characters happier endings in this novel. It does not establish Haibara’s death in the novel’s ongoing storyline 38.
