Background / History
Early Adventures
Old Jack left Hill Village dreaming of becoming a noble lord and spent roughly thirty years struggling outside it. With no useful skills at first, he survived through odd jobs and occasional begging. Pride and fear of ridicule kept him from returning home empty-handed 3.
During a winter of hunger and cold, an impoverished knight hired him because he could not afford a slave. Jack became deeply devoted to this master, who gave him basic adventurer training and taught him to read. Traveling together brought Jack more wealth than his earlier years of work had earned 3.
The knight eventually entered Tirisfal Glades with several mercenaries and never returned. After waiting for months, Jack abandoned hope and returned home. His accumulated wealth and standing as the village's only registered adventurer helped him become chief 3.
Teaching Allen
Allen approached Old Jack after discovering that he could read. Unlike the other village children, Allen was not deterred by his frightening face and cultivated their friendship by listening admiringly to his adventure stories 3 4.
When Allen asked for reading lessons, Jack recognized his longing for the outside world. He offered to pass on his master's adventurous spirit, treating this as something he could still accomplish for the missing knight. He required Allen to keep their arrangement secret from Eva and Jason, fearing their reaction to his encouraging their only son to leave home 4.
Allen initially trained in the mornings and studied reading in the afternoons. Jack grew stricter as he accepted him as an apprentice and began thinking of leaving his possessions to him. Over three years, Allen learned everything Jack could teach 4.
The Wolf Attack
After injured hunters reported that wolves were slaughtering animals throughout the mountains, Jack correctly predicted an attack on the village. He rallied the villagers to defend their homes rather than rely on a lord's mercy, organized three teams under himself, Parson, and Allen, and mobilized residents of all ages to prepare traps 4 5.
Jack's charge steadied the frightened defenders, but he advanced too quickly and became surrounded. His limited stamina nearly gave out before Allen intervened and saved him. The villagers killed the pack leader and drove off the remaining wolves, though three defenders died 5.
Jack comforted the bereaved families and promised compensation and community support. He proposed selling the wolf pelts in Shante City and dividing the proceeds among the dead villagers' families, the fighters, and those who had remained behind 5.
Examining the unusually large pack leader with Allen, Jack identified signs of magical corruption and suggested that its source might have come from Tirisfal Glades. He did not discover that Allen had already removed and concealed a magical stone from the wolf's body 6.
Allen's Departure
A year after the attack, fifteen-year-old Allen announced his intention to become an adventurer. Jack had come to regard him as a son or grandson and was saddened that he would leave so soon. He asked only to see Allen off and urged him to return safely 6.
Three days later, Jack met Allen at the village entrance and gave him a map of places he had visited. During their farewell, he also secretly placed five old Lordaeron gold coins in Allen's belongings. Allen suspected these were savings intended for Jack's funeral and resolved to return and protect him and his parents if war came 6.
Appearance
- Fierce, unattractive face: His appearance frightened the village children, who generally avoided him 3.
- Elderly: Age had reduced his stamina enough to endanger him during the wolf battle 5.
Personality
Jack's intimidating appearance conceals a strong affection for children. Having neither wife nor descendants, he longed for a child to care for and was discouraged by the village children's fear of him. Allen's companionship brought out his warmth, teasing humor, and generosity 3 4.
He enjoys boasting and exaggerating his adventures. One story claims that he rescued his master from a goblin encirclement and beheaded the chief; the narration clarifies that he had merely encountered a few stragglers 4.
His loyalty to his missing master remains central to his outlook. Although he believes he has lost the spirit of a true adventurer, he hopes Allen can carry that legacy forward. As chief, he shows courage and concern for others, leading the defense personally and working through the night to manage its aftermath 4 5.
