Background / History
Childhood and Mercenary Career
Ailand came from a commoner family. According to his father, his mother died shortly after his birth. Throughout Ailand’s memories, he and his father remained in their village; his father neither visited former comrades nor received visitors looking for him 61 102.
His father had served in the military and taught him knight cultivation, but not soldier training. He rarely discussed his service, though Ailand believed he missed army life. Before dying, he left Ailand a dagger and instructed him never to sell it 61 101 102.
Ailand later commanded the Knight Mercenary Company. He initially believed that recruiting more members would allow him to build a successful company, but expansion pushed expenses beyond income. Its low standing kept it from securing lucrative contracts, while smaller jobs could not support its membership 59.
Allegiance to Allen
After fighting Trolls during an escort assignment, the company was reduced to seventeen survivors, three of whom were permanently unable to fight. With insufficient money for compensation and treatment, Ailand offered the company’s allegiance to Allen. He also regarded the young mage’s potential as an exceptional opportunity for someone of common birth 59.
Allen covered the financial shortfall, supplied Healing Potions, and dissolved the company into two seven-man guard squads under Ailand. Ailand offered to serve without wages; Allen instead agreed to cover his daily cultivation expenses. During the caravan journey, Ailand also helped hold off the Shadow Wolf that Allen killed 59.
In Brill, Ailand implemented Allen’s training schedule and quickly earned praise for his work as an instructor. Allen subsequently bought him equipment suited to his agility-focused fighting style 61 63 64.
Service Before the War
Ailand accompanied Allen to Little Hill Village and met Jason and Eva. When Allen diverted toward Darrowshire, he entrusted Ailand with escorting the other followers to Dalaran, explaining that their safety depended on having a Professional with them 69 70.
In Dalaran, Ailand defended the merchant George against Hillman’s accusation of embezzlement, citing George’s help and personal spending on the followers’ behalf. After George became Allen’s follower and took over household needs, Ailand no longer needed to interrupt Allen’s research so frequently 76 77.
Boulder’gor and the Family Heirloom
Ailand and the other followers reached the Alliance army while traveling with Uther’s party. Allen subsequently ordered him to intensify the guards’ training for war 91 92.
During the capture of Boulder’gor, Ailand advanced too far and drew attacks from several formidable Orcs. He saved Rogier’s life but became the most seriously wounded of Allen’s followers. Rogier praised his courage, while Ailand insisted that he had merely charged too far ahead 101.
While visiting him, Allen examined his inherited dagger and identified it as powerful magical equipment suited to Rogues. Its unusual materials, concealed magic, and connection to a paired weapon raised questions about Ailand’s father. Allen returned it, warned Ailand to keep both the dagger and his father’s history private, and promised to investigate if an opportunity arose 101 102.
Training Allen’s Regiment
When Allen received command of the inexperienced Sixth Regiment of the Fourth Army, Ailand urged him to complain to headquarters about the troops’ poor quality. Allen refused and instead tasked his followers with helping turn the recruits into soldiers 106.
Ailand took responsibility for training during the march. After judging that the force could safely attack only small, scattered enemy groups, he was assigned to find local guides and prepare the soldiers for woodland movement, forced marches, and rapid retreats 107 108.
Near Northfold, he organized the encirclement of a wounded Orc band. On Allen’s orders, he led the charge while shouting a Paladin slogan to make the Orcs believe their previous attackers had caught up with them. He later organized preparations to withdraw toward Boulder’gor when Allen suspected that the missing Orc forces were gathering against the fortress 109 110.
Before the march to Tarren Mill, Ailand reported that the unit had recruited 234 men and compiled its rosters. Allen also assigned him to arrange literacy lessons through the unit leaders and to prepare the force for General Vannes’s march 117 118.
Personality
Ailand combines strong deference toward Allen with an awareness of opportunity. His initial pledge was partly an investment in a promising mage, and he delivers flattering declarations with the solemn bearing of a knight. His respect also extends to Allen’s family: he remains stiffly formal at their dinner table because he considers casual behavior inappropriate for a follower 59 69.
He is protective of those serving alongside him. He objects to Hillman’s treatment of George, worries about Allen traveling alone, and reacts angrily when Allen is assigned dangerously inexperienced troops. His battlefield courage earns Rogier’s admiration, though Ailand is embarrassed by the praise 70 76 101 106.
His gratitude over the dagger reflects a much harsher view of the world than Allen expects. Ailand assumes that exposing such a valuable heirloom could lead his own lord to confiscate it or kill him. Allen’s decision to return it and offer help therefore moves him deeply 102.
