Background / History
Rebirth and village life
Wang Lu died in an earthquake near a newly excavated Sichuan tomb. Before his death, he recognized a symbol from his incantation on an excavated artifact and suspected a connection to Li Qing. The tomb drew in his soul alongside those of other victims, and he was reborn as Allen, the son of the farmers Jason and Eva 2.
At five, Allen discovered that he lived in Lordaeron in the world of Warcraft. Learning that Terenas Menethil had recently taken the throne made him fear the wars that could eventually threaten his family. Unable to afford formal education, he sought literacy lessons while continuing his incantation practice 2.
Allen deliberately befriended Old Jack, the village chief and a former adventurer. Jack agreed to teach him reading and adventuring skills, with the apprenticeship kept secret from Allen’s parents. Three years later, Allen helped defend the village against a frenzied wolf pack, abandoning his assigned position to rescue Jack. After the battle, he secretly recovered a blue-green stone from the lead wolf 3 4 5.
Caravan disaster and journey to Dalaran
Allen studied in the Balnir Family’s library before taking an escort job with the Mason Caravan. The journey exposed him to deadly beasts and noble power struggles. After a venom spider attack, the dying mercenary Joey entrusted him with a payment note for his five-year-old son, George, and asked Allen to say that he had gone south 8 9 11.
Following the caravan’s destruction, Allen recovered nearly a hundred gold coins from the dead. This removed his immediate need to earn money as a mercenary or enlist in the army. Having witnessed the power of mages, he committed himself to reaching Dalaran rather than becoming entangled in another noble’s affairs 13.
Traveling alone, Allen discovered a village occupied by bandits. He killed its guards, freed the prisoners, and led the villagers against their captors. After defeating two leaders, he tricked the surviving leader, Fland, into revealing the buried loot, then killed him. Allen retained the gold and most of the silver, leaving the remaining coins to the villagers 14 15 16.
To cross the border, Allen convinced Viscount Alex Morien that he studied under a powerful mage and alchemist named Victor Sacks. The invented mentor helped him decline recruitment and obtain travel papers. Beyond the border, Allen survived a water elemental’s ambush by destroying its hand runes and extracting its core, then continued to Dalaran 19 20 21 22.
Finding an alternative to conventional magic
Dalaran’s aptitude test initially seemed promising: Allen’s Mental Power astonished the examiner, who offered an introduction to Archmage Ganast Krins. The offer collapsed when the final test revealed that Allen possessed no magical affinity. After a day of despair, he abandoned his plan to return home and resolved to find another route to power 23 24.
A concealed message in the goblin alchemist Jinlun’s biography led Allen to a buried box containing papers, a letter, and a potion. He subsequently established a small alchemy workshop in Dalaran’s outer city. By manipulating mana from his Water Elemental Heart, he learned to brew Healing Potions and qualified as an Alchemy Apprentice 25 26 27 29 30.
Library research and repeated experiments eventually led him beyond dependence on stored mana. His Mental Power underwent a qualitative change, producing a Soul Space, while his research established that Mental Power could gather ambient magical energy. He kept the implications of his discoveries secret 31 32 33 34.
Pelaven’s territory and Silverpine Forest
Assigned to Highlord Pelaven’s territory, Allen met his potion quota while devoting most of his time to rune research. When corrupted beasts appeared in Silverpine Forest, he accompanied Ryan’s squad in a search for their Magic Source. Ryan initially dismissed his warnings, while Magg chose to remain with Allen rather than advance into danger 36 37.
During the expedition, Allen developed his first-rank Wind Blade. He and Ryan later encountered an unusually large Man Snake that could conceal itself from his mental perception; Allen pushed Ryan away from its attack and urged him to flee 39 40.
Pelaven subsequently suspected that Allen’s advancement connected him to Kel’Thuzad’s political maneuvering. Allen denied involvement and left the territory as soon as he could. Back in Dalaran, he obtained formal Full Mage certification 41 42.
Independent research and academy life
On a later expedition, Allen observed Jungle Savages using Winter Mushrooms in a ritual and discovered that the smoke strengthened his spiritual power. He learned their gathering method and traded twelve portions to Rex for three prepared incense sticks and two potion formulas 44 45.
Allen continued funding his research through alchemy and original spells. After earning second-rank certification, he applied for a teaching-assistant position at the Apprentice Academy. By the following chapters, he had an academy office and was exchanging ideas about magic with Khadgar 47 48.
When the Kirin Tor rejected Kel’Thuzad’s foreign-trade proposal, Khadgar warned that Allen’s Alchemy Association ties could make others view him as a factional supporter. Some academy colleagues distanced themselves, but Allen had never joined a faction for privileges and suffered little practical disruption 49.
Personality
Allen combines an adult’s social experience with a self-taught researcher’s skepticism. He wins Old Jack’s trust through calculated friendliness, bargains persistently over supplies, and invents influential connections when dealing with nobles. He also corrects exaggerated claims about his achievements when they risk creating dangerous expectations 4 19 29.
His previous-life education makes him willing to question established magical theories rather than accept an Archmage’s authority as proof. He favors experimentation and understanding over the pursuit of ready-made runes, eventually abandoning mage gatherings that offer little of either 31 32 45.
Allen values ordinary lives and objects to commanders exposing soldiers to avoidable danger. That concern does not make him merciful toward predators: he kills bandits, deceives Fland with a false oath of noble honor, and identifies himself with the farmers Fland victimized 15 16 37.
His ambition survives severe setbacks, particularly the discovery of his lack of magical affinity. Beneath that determination, he remains attached to his family; Dalaran’s festival preparations remind him of both his Lordaeron parents and the family he left in his previous life 24 43.
Abilities & Skills
Mental Power and cultivation
Allen’s incantation gradually strengthens his Mental Power across both lives. Its accumulated effects give him mental control far beyond that expected of an untrained apprentice 23.
- Flexible practice: The formula can be practiced anywhere and keeps him alert, even sharpening his senses 22.
- Reduced sleep requirement: He can remain awake for three days and nights, but cultivation does not permanently replace sleep 22.
- Mental perception: Detects nearby movement and magical fluctuations, including a concealed attacker during the bandit battle 15 37.
- Limits: His early perception has a very short range; the enlarged Man Snake escapes detection entirely 15 40.
- Winter Mushroom resistance: His Mental Power allows him to overcome the mushrooms’ hallucinatory fragrance while gathering them 44.
Soul Space and unconventional spellcasting
Allen develops an alternative to conventional mage practice despite having no magical affinity. His method uses pure Mental Power, rune construction, and gathered magical energy rather than the normal training available to mage apprentices 24 31 33 34 36.
- Soul Space: Provides a place to prepare spell runes before combat 33 36.
- Rapid casting: Prepared runes shorten the time needed to release Wind Blade 36.
- Independent development: He lacks predecessors whose methods he can follow and must work out his techniques himself 36.
- Equipment incompatibility: Conventional staves that enhance mana or mana recovery offer him little value 34.
Spell development
| Spell | Documented properties or use |
|---|---|
| Wind Blade | Initially copied from his rechargeable staff’s runes. He later strengthens it by altering Conversion Runes and casts the enhanced version in roughly one second during certification 37 39 42. |
| Ice Shield | Withstands over a hundred of Allen’s ordinary sword slashes, or an estimated dozen attacks from a first-rank Warrior. It resists only one hit from his strongest Wind Blade, and its slowing effect is weak against professionals 41. |
| Airburst Spell | One of Allen’s original wind spells 48. |
| Blade Swarm Spell | Sold to the Association for an initial payment and a share of future sales 48. |
| Freezing Spell | Sold to the Association alongside Blade Swarm 48. |
| Scorching Wind | Another original spell developed to expand his repertoire 48. |
Alchemy
Allen’s unusually precise mental control helps him identify the balance point necessary for successful potion brewing 29.
- Healing Potions: Begins with mana extracted from a Water Elemental Heart, later using Mental Power to condense mana instead 29 36.
- Quality control: Produces medium-quality Healing Potions and keeps his better products for personal use 30.
- Purification Potions: Learns Rex’s formula and eventually reaches a success rate of about fifty percent 45.
- Additional formula: Acquires the Lesser Speed Enhancement Potion formula from Rex; the account does not document successful production 45.
Combat and fieldcraft
Old Jack’s instruction gives Allen practical swordsmanship, physical training, and adventuring knowledge 4.
- Combines close combat with concealed spell attacks to defeat opponents who mistake him for an ordinary swordsman 15.
- Uses stealth to eliminate guards and free prisoners before confronting a larger force 15.
- Identifies magical weaknesses under pressure, as demonstrated against the water elemental’s hand runes 21.
- Prefers ranged spellcasting once it becomes practical, reserving close combat for necessity 37.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Soul Book — A supposedly defective spellbook made from Deadman’s Tree wood. Activated with pure Mental Power, it stores about half of Allen’s mental energy for later use and temporarily enhances his perception. He disguises it as an ordinary black-bound book 34 37.
- Rechargeable magic staff — His early means of casting Wind Blade and the source of its initial rune pattern. Charging requires a specific sequence; its output depends on the charger’s magic but cannot exceed the staff’s limits. It breaks during his later Silverpine expedition 14 37 44.
- Energy Stone — The peculiar blue-green stone recovered from the lead wolf. Allen researches its energy and uses it to recharge his staff 5 7 15.
- Water Elemental Heart — The small, nearly depleted core taken from the elemental he defeats; later used as a mana source for alchemy 21 22 29.
- Swords and dagger — Receives an iron sword from Old Jack, retains Joey’s sword after his death, and uses a belt dagger against the water elemental 7 11 21.
- Armor — Uses iron armor early on, then changes to lighter leather armor for the Silverpine search to conserve stamina 37.
- Dalaran credentials and mage equipment — Receives an Alchemy Apprentice badge and identification, followed by a Full Mage badge, robe, and staff 30 42.
- Winter Mushroom incense — Three white incense sticks prepared by Rex; greatly accelerate his cultivation when burned 45.
Relationships
- Jason and Eva — His farmer parents in Lordaeron. Fear for their safety helps motivate his pursuit of strength, and he misses them while living in Dalaran 2 43.
- Old Jack — His first teacher in this life, responsible for his literacy and adventurer training. Allen rescues him during the wolf attack 4 5.
- Joey — A fellow caravan mercenary whose dying request entrusts Allen with a payment note and message for his son. Allen buries him and intends to leave his adventurer badge to the child 11.
- George, Joey’s son — The five-year-old child in Poplar Village named in Joey’s final request. He is distinct from the merchant George Hreliff 11 31.
- George Hreliff — Potion buyer, business partner, and friend. His association with Allen raises his family standing; he later invites Allen to consider joining the Hreliff Family 31 42 45.
- Ryan — Squad leader and first-rank Warrior. Initially distrusts Allen’s warnings, later consults him during reconnaissance and sees him off when he leaves Pelaven’s territory 37 39 40 41.
- Magg — Soldier who trusts Allen’s concern for the squad and stays behind when Ryan rejects his warning 37.
- Ruizesi — Fellow apprentice and potion customer; Allen’s closest acquaintance among the apprentices in Pelaven’s territory 35 36 41.
- Rex — Alchemist who exchanges prepared Winter Mushroom incense and potion formulas for Allen’s harvest 45.
- Khadgar — Curious first-rank mage and discussion partner. Shares Allen’s doubts about accepted magical theory and warns him about Dalaran’s factional politics 48 49.
- Highlord Pelaven — Assignment commander who briefly suspects Allen of acting for Kel’Thuzad, prompting Allen to leave his territory 37 41.
- Kel’Thuzad — A political figure to whose faction Allen is mistakenly linked through his advancement and Alchemy Association work; Allen denies any actual involvement 41 49.
