Background / History
Claimed Origins
According to Monroe’s account, “Wesen” derives from an archaic form of Spanish used during the Middle Ages. Wesen are said to descend from subordinate divine races that served the gods of ancient Egypt, explaining their resemblance to animal-headed, human-bodied deities. Nick treats this divine ancestry as an unproven, self-flattering claim 17.
Wesen legends describe their ancestors fighting for the gods under the leadership of royal families. As magic faded and monotheism spread, particularly during the Crusades, those families lost the power needed to maintain their armies. Wesen subsequently dispersed across the world 56.
Royal Rule and the Grimms
Legends describe Grimms and Wesen ancestors fighting alongside one another before an eventual rupture. Grimm journals also record a period when Grimms served the Wesen Royal Family, using their gifts to supervise Wesen much like an imperial secret police 17 120.
A parchment translated by Dahlia links seven Grimm Knights to treasure taken from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade. The knights betrayed the Royal Family, concealed the treasure, and each retained a key connected to it. Nick concludes that the hunt for Aunt Mary’s key is tied to this legacy 120.
The Royal Family eventually fragmented and never recovered its former rule over Wesen. Most Wesen adapted to ordinary society, while a minority continued supporting royal ambitions of renewed domination 56 120.
Concealment and Integration
Centuries of Grimm hunts killed some dangerous Wesen species to extinction or near-extinction and established a lasting fear of exposure. Modern firearms further reduced the advantage of powerful bodies, making secrecy increasingly important 56 63.
At the Valen Convention of 1521, hundreds of Wesen representatives established the Code of Honor. Monroe connects its strict concealment rules to persecution surrounding the witch trials, which continued to claim Wesen lives for centuries after the code’s creation 130.
Appearance & Physiology
Wesen usually resemble ordinary humans. Their revealed forms vary widely, from wolves and bears to bees; some retain a largely human body with altered facial features, while full transformations can also produce fur, claws, and other bodily changes 17 89 127.
- Awakening: Most Wesen begin awakening around puberty. Before that, their children are no different from ordinary human children 214.
- Visibility: Emotional transformations are normally visible to other Wesen and Grimms, but not ordinary humans. Deliberate transformations can be seen by everyone 132.
- DNA: Outside full transformation, Wesen DNA falls within the accepted human range. Samples collected during full transformation can show differences 199.
- Death: Except under special circumstances, a transformed Wesen rapidly returns to human form after death 199.
- Population: Numerous weaker groups lack superhuman combat abilities. Beaver Wesen are one example of these populous, largely law-abiding communities 197 198.
Abilities & Skills
Transformation
Wesen share the ability to reveal an underlying supernatural form, though the circumstances and resulting abilities vary by species 17.
| Transformation | Trigger or Control | Visibility | Effects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Involuntary | Emotional fluctuations, including anger or frustration | Normally visible only to Wesen and Grimms | Reveals the Wesen’s underlying appearance without openly exposing it to ordinary humans 17 132. |
| Voluntary / full | Deliberate transformation | Visible to ordinary humans | Produces a physical half-beast form and grants abilities associated with the species 17. |
- Frequent transformations can have side effects; properly administered J can alleviate them 205.
- Full transformation may make instinctive behavior harder to control. Blutbaden can enter a bloodthirsty frenzy that overrides judgment and fear 17 209.
Species-Specific Traits
Wesen do not share a uniform set of combat powers. Their advantages range from strength and heightened senses to magical abilities or specialized craftsmanship 65 117 197.
- Physical power: Blutbaden and Bear Wesen are counted among the stronger species 63.
- Sensory abilities: Monroe can identify scents, while Billy Capra’s transformed ears detect approaching danger 15 141.
- Magic: Hexenbiests use witchcraft, curses, potions, and force capable of restraining or moving others 65 73 75.
- Craftsmanship: Beaver Wesen excel at construction, repairs, engineering, and farming rather than fighting 197.
Limits
- Wesen are not uniformly resistant to conventional weapons. Nick treats firearms as effective against many of them, and Frederick Calvert is killed by close-range gunshots 75 199.
- Powerful instincts can endanger allies as well as enemies. After being wounded, Monroe loses control and nearly kills Rosalie before recovering his senses 209.
- Magical species present threats beyond physical combat: Hexenbiest curses, potions, and immobilizing abilities concern Nick more than their close-quarters fighting 75.
Known Varieties
| Variety | Documented Characteristics | Associated Figures |
|---|---|---|
| Wolf Wesen / Blutbaden | Blutbaden possess fangs, claws, considerable strength, and a dangerous blood frenzy. They are distinguished from other Wolf Wesen by their loss of control at the sight of blood 17 209. | Eddie Monroe |
| Bear Wesen | Exceed two meters when fully transformed. Some practice the Lohaz Ceremony, a three-day coming-of-age hunt involving a ritual claw used to disembowel prey 67. | Frank Rabe/Labe, Barry, the Colbert boys |
| Fox Wesen | Have furred, foxlike faces and elongated canine teeth. Known individuals work in black-market trade, apothecary practice, and scientific research 88 205 212. | Frederick Calvert, Rosalie, Ernst Boris Chain |
| Beaver Wesen | Numerous, group-oriented, and physically vulnerable; particularly skilled in construction, repairs, bridge engineering, and farming 197 203. | Bud, Joey |
| Bee Wesen | Follow a Queen Bee; natural enemies of Hexenbiests and longstanding allies of Grimms 127 203. | Melissa Wickoft |
| Hexenbiests | Magical Wesen skilled in witchcraft, curses, and potion-making; historically occupy a priestlike position among Wesen 65 75. | Adalind |
| Goat Wesen | Associated with powerful sexual attraction. Billy Capra also demonstrates a standing leap far beyond human ability 137 141. | Billy Capra, Elvis Grayspan |
| Vultures | Produce medicines from human organs through a specialized process; older accounts describe them removing organs from living victims 88. | Calvert’s organ-powder supplier and deliveryman |
| Lizard Wesen | Frequently encountered among belligerent suspects; stronger fighters than ordinary adults, but substantially weaker than Monroe 83 209. | The dealers confronted by Rosalie and Monroe |
| Coyotl | Listed among known Wesen groups and encountered by Nick among police detainees 17 83. | — |
| Bauerschwein / pig Wesen | Natural enemies of Blutbaden; human-heart preparations are said to treat skin conditions common among pig Wesen 88 117. | — |
| Man-Eating Spider / Black Widow | Dissolves victims’ organs and sucks them dry. Its inclusion among Wesen is ambiguous: Monroe says spider monsters are not usually considered Wesen, although Charlotte lives at a Wesen monastery 212 213. | Charlotte |
- Other named groups: Mauseherz and Höllentier are listed by Monroe. Crocodile, lion, and leopard Wesen are also mentioned among powerful species 17 63 203.
Society & Institutions
Human Society
- Most Wesen have become accustomed to living in human form. Some weaker species regard themselves entirely as ordinary people and seek only peaceful lives 56 117.
- Their professions include law, clockmaking, shopkeeping, engineering, farming, and medicine 117 197 199 205.
- Wesen are not automatically united by their shared nature. Territorial instincts and species rivalries can produce hostility, including the longstanding enmity between Blutbaden and Bauerschwein 116 117.
- Vulnerable groups use communal living as protection. Beaver Wesen rely on neighbors and family networks, while Bee Wesen organize under a queen 203.
Wesen Council and Code of Honor
The Council acts as a Wesen law-enforcement body, maintaining the rules established at the Valen Convention 130.
| Rule or Function | Details |
|---|---|
| Public secrecy | Deliberately revealing a Wesen’s true form to the public is forbidden 130. |
| Reporting obligation | Wesen who learn of an exposure must report it to the Council 130. |
| Exploitation restriction | The code prohibits using one’s Wesen identity to profit from ordinary people 130. |
| Enforcement | The Council may notify a nearby Grimm, dispatch powerful Wesen enforcers, or hire assassins. Blutbaden often serve as enforcers 130. |
| Punishment | Death can extend to both offenders and Wesen who knew but failed to report them. Monroe recounts incidents in which every Wesen near an exposure was slaughtered 130. |
- Nick considers the Council more effective as a deterrent to ordinary Wesen than as a restraint on the Royal Family 142.
Medicine and Underground Trade
- Apothecaries: Rosalie is a skilled apothecary associated with her family’s century-old herbal workshop. Nick hopes her expertise can help identify the potions and occult records inherited from Aunt Mary 212 213.
- J: A mold-derived drug accidentally discovered during penicillin research. Correctly used, it treats pain and transformation side effects in Wesen, but it is highly addictive and can damage the liver and brain. It is lethal to most humans 205.
- Organ-derived medicines: Vultures process human organs into remedies sold to other Wesen, including gallbladder preparations for eyesight and heart preparations for skin conditions 88.
- Black-market services: Frederick Calvert sells specialized materials, identity documents, and organ powders through his tea and spice shop 56 88 90.
- Restricted clientele: Both Calvert’s underground business and the drug dealers known to Rosalie primarily serve Wesen customers 88 206.
Wesen Monastery
- A monastery outside Portland serves Wesen who have renounced their bloodthirsty nature 213.
- Monroe lived there for almost two years and formed friendships with other residents 213.
- Charlotte, a Man-Eating Spider, resides there and helps identify the nature of Nick’s suspected serial killer 213.
Relations with Grimms
Fear and Resistance
Centuries of killings have made fear of Grimms seem instinctive. A transformed Wesen can recognize a Grimm through eye contact; reactions range from flight and paralysis to violent resistance 17 89 141.
- Grimm’s Journals preserve species descriptions, weaknesses, hunting accounts, and designs for specialized weapons and traps 63.
- Grimm Hunters are trained from childhood to overcome this fear through willpower. Their signature folding Reaper Scythes supposedly reinforce that resistance 63.
- Historical treatment varied: Labe recalls that most Grimms spared rule-abiding Wesen, but emphasizes that survival still depended on an individual Grimm’s judgment 117.
- Bee alliance: Bee Wesen’s hostility toward Hexenbiests has made them unusual allies of the Grimm family 127.
Nick’s Approach
Nick rejects the idea that Wesen ancestry determines guilt. Monroe’s clean record helps convince him that human laws and morality can restrain Wesen instincts, and he seeks advice to avoid harming innocent people through ignorance 68.
- He treats Labe as an equal and employs his legal expertise, leading the lawyer to view him as a potential protector of weaker Wesen 117.
- He reassures Bud and Joey that he will not kill them, then hires Bud for repairs rather than punishing their frightened curiosity 203.
- He wants his reputation to include fairness toward ordinary Wesen, both to uphold justice and to develop allies and informants against the Royal Family 203.
- His cooperation with Monroe, Rosalie, and other Wesen allows investigations to draw on knowledge inaccessible to ordinary police work 206 212 213.
