|---|---|---|
| Participation in spiritual communion | 114 | Nick’s meditation draws her into his consciousness. This establishes a shared spiritual experience, not an independently demonstrated psionic ability. |
| Awareness of personal psionics | 215 | After repeated sessions of spiritual communion, she begins sensing her own small reserve of psionic energy. Whether Gwen’s possession caused this is uncertain. She cannot channel that energy into the Magic Movie Ticket. |
Background / History
Dahlia’s father worked for the KGB before the Soviet Union’s collapse. He subsequently left that life with her mother and settled in Lithuania, where Dahlia was born. He taught her shooting through childhood hunting trips. After her mother died of illness, he took Dahlia back to Moscow 36.
Dahlia later performed work for the GRU without formally belonging to the organization. Nick interpreted her circumstances and exceptional shooting as those of an off-the-books assassin or “cleaner.” She also earned substantial commissions from the FSB and invested some of that money in European and American securities 36 78.
After each killing, Dahlia gave the spent cartridge casing to her father. He described the ritual as taking custody of her guilt so she could continue without carrying it herself. When advanced cancer spread through several of his organs, he told her that he intended to end his life on February 14 if he survived until then. He asked her to light a candle and look toward Orion wherever she happened to be; his actual death is not confirmed in the supplied account 38.
Before meeting Nick, Dahlia had already considered abandoning contract work, moving to Lyon or another unfamiliar place, and opening a small restaurant. She no longer wanted to kill and did not believe her father’s assurances that all her targets deserved to die 49.
Appearance
- Build: Slender and narrow-waisted, but physically strong rather than frail; she has long legs and considerable agility 31 36 42 49.
- Complexion: Pale skin. A proximity-mine fragment initially leaves a scar near her shoulder and chest, but it disappears when she crosses into Nick’s world 32 53.
- Hair: Black; by the White Lady investigation, it has grown long enough to brush her shoulders 193.
- Voice: A lovely contralto with a slightly husky quality 36.
- Later changes: Life in Portland softens her cheeks and fills out her previously lean figure 84.
Personality
Dahlia combines professional composure with unusually open affection. She can remain controlled during firefights, yet becomes visibly nervous at her first close meeting with Nick and readily reveals embarrassment, delight, or jealousy around him. Nick finds her far less guarded emotionally than her occupation would suggest 36 37 103 193.
She is courageous without being immune to fear. The Human-Headed Spiders leave her frightened enough to ask Nick to hold her, while the Predators make her question whether they can survive. Nevertheless, she continues fighting and refuses to let Nick abandon a sound plan merely to keep her close 42 50 105.
Independence remains important to her after leaving her world. She does not want to become Nick’s dependent or accessory, and both recognize that living together requires personal space and practical adjustment rather than romantic enthusiasm alone 54.
Her curiosity extends from childhood magical legends to Wesen biology and supernatural research. She watches Monroe transform with interest rather than fear, and eventually studies the Grimm journals more thoroughly than Nick himself 75 84 123.
Abilities & Skills
Marksmanship
A world-class sniper trained by her father, Dahlia becomes Nick’s instructor in advanced shooting and ballistics 33 36 85.
- Shoots an aluminum flask from a railing across the canyon with an SVD to demonstrate her skill 31.
- Teaches Nick to hit a soccer-ball-sized target at roughly 1,500 meters with a Barrett M107 33.
- Uses controlled bursts and precise follow-up shots rather than indiscriminate fire, coordinating with Nick against attacking creatures 46 103.
- Destroys a Super Predator’s wrist-mounted Plasma Caster with one sniper shot, then strikes its jaw with the next 112.
- Remains physically outmatched by some enemies: a Hollow Man’s saber strike sends her flying despite her attempt to block it with her rifle 39.
Gunsmithing and Ammunition Development
Dahlia helps build the couple’s arsenal using garage machining equipment, including a small milling machine 85.
- Works with firearm components and accompanies Nick to the Oregon Gun Shows event 85.
- Orders silver-plated components for weapons intended to withstand Nick’s Light of the Heart 193 196.
- Experiments with silver-plated bullets, silver bullets containing lead pellets, and silver nitrate in 7.62 mm ammunition 197.
- Produces silver-nitrate ammunition that creates a grenade-like flash and report when enhanced by Nick; its effectiveness against ghosts remains untested at that point 197.
- Discusses silver-thread armor and silver-plated blades with Bud, who offers access to his blacksmith cousin and a metallurgical laboratory 208.
Fieldcraft and Close-Quarters Combat
Her operational experience includes reconnaissance, stealth, weapons handling, and practical survival 97 98 101.
- Coordinates overlapping fire with Nick during the canyon defenses and helps repair fences and replace proximity mines 32 33.
- Treats her own shoulder wound with disinfectant, a surgical skin stapler, and gauze 32.
- Overpowers Hancock when she mistakes his unannounced entry for an intrusion 54.
- Approaches Nikolai unnoticed and fires beside his ear to interrupt his uncontrolled shooting 97.
- Conceals herself motionless in treetops, covered in wet mud, as the group’s reserve sniper against the Super Predator 112.
- Recognizes and accesses an FSB safe house after escaping the canyon 52.
Dance and Gymnastics
Dahlia trained seriously in ballet as a child before her father persuaded her to switch to gymnastics to protect her feet 148.
- Describes herself as an accomplished dancer 49.
- Uses her flexibility and body control to swing from Nick’s grip and flip back over a bridge railing 148.
Research and Supernatural Knowledge
Dahlia supplements Nick’s investigations through study of inherited records and independent research 123 146.
- Finds journal entries describing Bee Wesen and their relationship with Grimms 123.
- Identifies the heart-shaped mark beneath a Hexenbiest’s tongue as a possible means of identifying a victim 124.
- Uncovers Constance Welch’s family tragedy through online reports 146.
- Receives fragmentary memories and mental messages from the White Lady, allowing her to explain the entity’s condition and communicate its requests 194 195.
Finance and Business Planning
Dahlia has prior investment experience, though she is not a professional trader 78.
- Uses historical financial information collected before leaving her world to guide trading in Nick’s world 78.
- Plans to grow $185,000 into at least $300,000 before taking leveraged long positions during a later market recovery; these are stated goals, not confirmed returns 78.
- Envisions expanding the food-truck venture into a Portland food-ordering platform modeled on Ele.me 121.
- Lends Rosalie three gold bars toward reopening the spice shop 217.
Psionic Sensitivity
Dahlia eventually senses a small amount of psionic energy within herself 215.
- Her reserve is much smaller than Nick’s 215.
- She cannot use it to charge the Magic Movie Ticket 215.
- No independent psionic attack or enchantment is demonstrated in the supplied chapters 215.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Dragunov SVD: Used to demonstrate her shooting ability across the canyon 31.
- DShK heavy machine gun: Provides covering fire from the East Watchtower 32.
- M4A1 with M203 grenade launcher: Used during the canyon expedition against spiders, Hollow Men, and the cocoon nest 41 42 48.
- Grenades and serrated military dagger: Used during the climb out of the gorge to repel pursuers and sever the rope beneath the couple 49.
- Powered rope ascender: Carries her and Nick up the cliff during their escape 48.
- Predator equipment: Returns to Portland with alien weapons and pocket dimensions; later demonstrates active camouflage and a retractable Wristblade while wearing Predator armor 114 130.
- Silver-loaded pistol: Carried during the confrontation with the surviving White Lady 193.
- Gold and safe: Buys a safe after Nick reveals thirty gold bars and enthusiastically proposes collecting more on future adventures 195.
Relationships
- Nick Burkhardt — Boyfriend, housemate, shooting student, and adventure partner. Their relationship begins across the canyon and develops into a shared life in Portland. She teaches him marksmanship; he teaches her cooking and helps arrange her identity in his world 33 36 53 54 84.
- Her father — Former KGB operative, shooting instructor, and emotional anchor. His terminal illness and planned death deeply affect her, while his justification of her killings ultimately fails to resolve her guilt 36 38 49.
- Her mother — Dies of illness during Dahlia’s childhood; Dahlia’s father intends to be buried beside her 36 38.
- Gwen / White Lady — Initially possesses Dahlia without her consent, leaving her conscious but unable to move. After receiving the entity’s memories, Dahlia becomes more sympathetic and serves as her interpreter and host; their daily life develops into a seemingly symbiotic arrangement 194 195 200.
- Monroe — Friend who shows her his Wesen transformation and is astonished by her shooting. He also helps Nick pursue her identity documents 84 85 197.
- Hancock — Nick’s police partner. Their first household encounter ends with Dahlia pinning him to the floor; his stories about Nick subsequently fuel her teasing and jealousy 54 95.
- Aunt Mary — Welcomes Dahlia as a “good girl” and shares embarrassing childhood stories about Nick. Privately urges Nick to leave Dahlia for her safety 61.
- Dean and Sam Winchester — Allies in the White Lady investigation. Dahlia accompanies their fieldwork and helps locate and burn the family’s remains 146 151.
- Rosalie — Receives potion notes and equipment from Nick and Dahlia. Dahlia lends her gold for the shop, while Rosalie agrees to contact Reginald about identity documents 217.
- Bud — Collaborates with her on silver-thread armor and potential weapon-processing arrangements 208.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Canyon Watchtowers and Escape
Dahlia occupies the East Watchtower opposite Nick’s western post. Their exchanges develop into companionship over winter as they defend one another, communicate across the gorge, and practice shooting. Nick’s illuminated Christmas tree moves her to tears, and she later crosses over to meet him in person 31 32 33 34 36.
A mine explosion severs her crossing rope and sends her into the gorge. The ensuing expedition brings the pair into conflict with Hollow Men and Human-Headed Spiders, then leads them to Black Lake’s laboratory. Dahlia realizes that their employers regarded them as expendable, particularly after her previous mission exposed her on satellite imagery 38 41 42 44.
When Nick reveals his otherworldly origin, the Magic Movie Ticket offers a Couple Pass that could allow her to leave with him. She agrees, carries the hard drive containing evidence against Black Lake, and helps fight their way back up the cliff 45 48 49.
A New Life in Portland
Dahlia arrives in Portland with Nick. Her old shoulder scar and a dental cavity disappear during the transition, and Nick notices that she becomes livelier after leaving her former circumstances behind 53.
Her lack of any records in the new world prevents a simple immigration solution. The couple seeks an identity that can withstand scrutiny rather than merely purchasing a stolen Social Security number. A Fox Wesen merchant accepts a $20,000 deposit, but later chapters still show the issue unresolved, with Rosalie offering another avenue through Reginald 54 56 89 210 217.
Predator Hunting World
Dahlia voluntarily accompanies Nick through the Magic Movie Ticket, joking that staying behind might let him return with another woman. She scouts for their stranded group, helps establish shelter, and remains one of its most disciplined fighters 95 98 103 107.
During the battle with the Super Predator, her concealed sniper fire disables its Plasma Caster and damages its jaw. After Nick survives grievous injuries, she stays beside him. The pair eventually returns to Portland with Predator equipment 112 114.
White Lady and Gwen
Dahlia’s research draws her and Nick into Constance Welch’s case alongside the Winchester brothers. After Nick separates the White Lady from Constance’s vengeful spirit, the surviving entity follows them home and possesses Dahlia during spiritual communion 146 151 192 194.
The possession gives Dahlia fragments of the entity’s memories and enables limited communication. She helps negotiate rules for its presence, and Nick names it Gwen. Gwen subsequently remains hidden inside Dahlia much of the time, joining her in shopping, cooking preparations, and monitoring investments 194 195 200.
Repeated spiritual communion eventually allows Dahlia to sense her own psionics, though the precise role of Gwen’s possession in that development remains uncertain 215.
