First Appearance Chapter 15, “Monroe the Werewolf” 15

Background

Monroe belongs to a Blutbad family whose history includes violent encounters with Grimms. He tells Frank Rabe that Grimms burned his great-great-grandfather’s farm and beheaded his great-grandmother, while acknowledging that both relatives “had it coming.” Rabe knows the Monroe family by reputation and recognizes him as its rebellious son 116.

Before meeting Nick, Monroe spent almost two years in a monastery for Wesen who wished to renounce their bloodthirsty nature. He met and befriended members of numerous species there, including Charlotte, a Man-Eating Spider 213.

By his introduction, Monroe works as a clockmaker, volunteers at a local church, and enjoys a good reputation in his neighborhood. A police background check finds no criminal record. He describes himself as reformed, distances himself from traditionalist Wolf Wesen, and insists that he has never harmed a human 15 17.

Appearance

Monroe is a tall white man with a burly but not bulky build, a large nose, and a high forehead. At his introduction, a neatly trimmed full beard obscures much of his face 15.

  • Height: Estimated by Nick to be over six feet three inches 15.
  • Initial clothing: A blue-and-white plaid shirt over a T-shirt, jeans, and tan eight-eye Dr. Martens boots, despite temperatures above 30°C 15.
  • Blutbad form: Blood-red eyes, a coarse facial mane, an elongated wolf-like muzzle, sharp canine teeth, and pointed ears 15 84.
  • Later grooming: Clean-shaven when visiting Nick and Dahlia for dinner 84.
  • Formal clothing: Wears a wool suit when accompanying Rosalie to dinner at Nick’s home 216.

Personality

Monroe is talkative, easily flustered, and strongly protective of his peaceful civilian life. His early encounters with Nick alternate between frightened cooperation, indignant complaints, and attempts to avoid further involvement. Even after they become friends, he objects to being treated as a tracking dog or an on-demand “Wesen encyclopedia” 55 67 124.

His reluctance does not prevent him from helping others. He provides information to keep innocent Wesen from being killed, expresses sincere sympathy when Nick reveals Aunt Mary’s illness, and later protects Rosalie from armed attackers. His respect for Nick grows as he sees a Grimm willing to judge Wesen individually rather than condemn them by species 68 209 213 215.

Monroe takes pride in both his restraint and his Blutbad heritage. He defends the attractiveness of his true form and proudly notes that Blutbaden often serve as Wesen Council enforcers. At the same time, his efforts to control his instincts remain imperfect: blood and violence can push him into a frenzy dangerous even to his friends 17 130 209.

Abilities & Skills

Blutbad Transformation

Monroe can reveal his wolf-like Wesen features voluntarily, though strong stimuli can also provoke involuntary changes 15 84.

  • Deliberate display: Transforms to demonstrate Wesen physiology to Dahlia and to identify himself to Frederick Calvert 84 88.
  • Instinctive triggers: The scent of another Blutbad and the smell or sight of blood can redden his eyes or provoke transformation 17 55 209.
  • Control limits: Proximity to another Blutbad leaves him unstable during Robin’s rescue. Nick later explains that excessively frequent or prolonged transformations can cause a mindless berserk state 18 19 84.
  • Restraint practice: Limits wilderness outings, usually to one annual trip in winter. He believes occasional release of his instincts helps him retain reason during full transformation 85.

Enhanced Sense of Smell

Monroe’s nose makes him particularly useful in investigations involving hidden Wesen 18 199.

  • Detects another Blutbad near his home and follows its scent to a cabin in Forest Park 17 18.
  • Uses wolfsbane to mask his own scent while approaching the cabin 18.
  • Helps Nick investigate a meeting involving Bee Wesen at an abandoned paper mill 124.
  • Is introduced to Wu as a private consultant whose specialty is an exceptionally keen sense of smell 199.

Strength and Natural Weapons

In full combat, Monroe possesses enough strength to tear limbs from living opponents. His claws and teeth can inflict fatal throat wounds 209.

  • Demonstrated feat: Kills two armed Lizard Wesen in the spice-shop basement 209.
  • Comparison with Nick: Nick judges Monroe’s raw strength far beyond his own after examining the bodies 209.
  • Vulnerability: A ricocheting 9mm bullet wounds his left arm, demonstrating that he is not bulletproof 209.
  • Frenzy risk: Losing control after being shot nearly causes him to kill Rosalie as well; he regains his senses before doing so 209.

Wesen Knowledge and Contacts

Monroe supplies practical knowledge that Nick cannot immediately extract from the multilingual Grimm’s Journals 68.

  • Explains Wesen transformations, their inherited fear of Grimms, and tensions between species 17 18 68.
  • Advises on Bear Wesen hunting rituals, Bee Wesen warning signals, Goat Wesen influence, and Man-Eating Spiders 67 68 124 137 212.
  • Explains the Wesen Council’s enforcement of the Code of Honor 130.
  • Connects Nick with a black-market dealer and later with Charlotte at the Wesen monastery 56 88 213.
  • Understands the Wesen drug J and identifies Ogre Gift, a poison capable of bringing down an Ogre. He nevertheless calls himself an amateur enthusiast beside Rosalie’s professional expertise 205 216.

Clockmaking

Monroe works professionally with clocks, examining gears under a magnifying glass and maintaining a home filled with timepieces 15 55.

  • Describes himself as an excellent clockmaker with a legitimate profession 18.
  • His household collection includes a Sanwu Brand mantel clock 55.

Relationships

  • Nick — Initially fears him as a Grimm and resents his coercion. Their association becomes a friendship and an unofficial investigative partnership; Monroe eventually calls Nick a kind person 15 18 199 215.
  • Rosalie — A Fox Wesen apothecary whom Monroe meets during the investigation of her brother’s murder. He protects her and admits that he likes her, but explicitly says they are not officially dating and have not yet been on a date 202 206 209 212.
  • Dahlia — A friend who responds to his transformation with curiosity rather than fear. He brings her flowers when visiting and shares meals with her and Nick 84 216.
  • Hancock — Nick’s police partner, who consults Monroe alongside Nick about Goat Wesen 137.
  • Frank Rabe — A Bear Wesen lawyer who recognizes Monroe’s family background. Despite their species’ antagonism, they greet one another peacefully and agree that Nick treats law-abiding Wesen differently 68 116.
  • Frederick Calvert — A Fox Wesen merchant Monroe knows and introduces to Nick. After Frederick’s murder, Monroe helps investigate the shop and contacts the Wesen underworld for information 56 88 200 202.
  • Charlotte — A friend from Monroe’s monastery years. He brings Nick to her for advice and intervenes when learning that Nick is a Grimm alarms her 213.
  • Mary Kessler — Nick’s aunt, whose name frightens Monroe enough to make him visibly pale. Despite that fear, he sincerely apologizes on learning that she is gravely ill 16 68.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Robin’s Abduction

Nick first encounters Monroe while investigating a missing girl. After witnessing his transformation, Nick chases him into his house and arrests him, but the search produces no evidence connecting him to the crime. A second confrontation that evening leads Monroe to identify Nick as a Grimm and invite him inside to talk 15.

Under pressure from Nick, Monroe tracks the actual Blutbad suspect to a forest cabin. His increasing instability prevents him from approaching safely, so Nick sends him away with instructions to make an anonymous emergency call. Nick later brings him Glenfiddich 18-year-old whisky in thanks for helping rescue the girl and locate the serial killer 18 19 55.

Becoming Nick’s Wesen Consultant

Monroe advises Nick during the Bear Wesen investigation, despite objecting to being treated as an encyclopedia. Nick subsequently makes a more earnest request for help avoiding the accidental killing of innocent Wesen 67 68.

Their association extends beyond investigations. Monroe demonstrates his transformation to Dahlia, accompanies the couple to Calvert’s shop to arrange her identity, and helps work on the food truck intended for Hansen and Gracie 84 88 116.

The Paper Mill and Wesen Council

Monroe helps investigate Bee Wesen activity at the abandoned paper mill and explains their role as a local warning network. Later, he describes the Wesen Council to Nick while accompanying him to cremate Adalind’s corpse. The apparent release of a ghostly face from the pyre frightens Monroe, Dahlia, and Rabe 124 130.

Calvert’s Murder and Rosalie’s Protection

After Frederick Calvert is murdered, Monroe assists at the crime scene and meets Frederick’s sister, Rosalie. Together, they discover remaining supplies of J, an addictive Wesen drug. Nick leaves Monroe to protect her because the thieves may return for the rest 199 202 205 206.

When two Lizard Wesen return, Rosalie draws them into the basement while Monroe hides nearby. He initially attacks with control, but a gunshot wound triggers a frenzy in which he tears both attackers apart and nearly kills Rosalie. Nick recognizes the recovered pistol as the likely murder weapon, but the suspects’ deaths and the condition of their bodies prevent a conventional resolution of Frederick’s case 209.

The Man-Eating Spider Investigation

Monroe identifies the suspected creature as a Man-Eating Spider and takes Nick to consult Charlotte. He presents their partnership as mutual support for Wesen who wish to live without harming humans. After the visit, he openly praises Nick’s kindness 212 213 215.

Monroe later accompanies Rosalie to dinner at Nick’s home, where she decides to remain in Portland and continue running the spice shop. During a visit to Nick’s hidden collection of Grimm books, weapons, and alchemical supplies, Monroe recognizes Ogre Gift 216.

Notable Quotes

“I eat extra vegetables every day, cook my steaks well-done, and do Pilates. I’m a reformed Wolf Wesen.” 17

“Nick is different. He respects all Wesen who follow the rules, including Blutbaden.” 116

“It’s more a matter of helping each other. … We came here because we didn’t want to be enemies of humans, and Nick is willing to support that choice.” 213

Trivia

  • Prefers good coffee beans to whisky and serves Nick carefully roasted Guatemalan coffee with homemade bagels 55.
  • Tried veganism but abandoned it after finding it difficult to sustain. He later enthusiastically praises Nick’s soy-based Five-Spice Vegetarian Chicken 55 199.
  • Dresses in a brown trench coat and old-fashioned felt fedora for his first undercover visit to Calvert’s shop, treating the outing like a secret-agent assignment 88.
  • Offers to help investigate Goat Wesen partly because he resents their supernatural advantage in attracting romantic partners 137.
