Background / History

Qian Daoliu has spent most of his life guarding the Angel God Statue and serving the Angel God, rarely leaving the Worship Hall. He has only one son, Qian Xunji, who serves as Spirit Hall’s pope. Although the Worship Hall normally avoids interfering in the Pope’s Hall’s affairs, Qian Daoliu commands the other Enshrined and intervenes directly when the Angel God’s inheritance is involved 3 4.

In the future described by Qian Renxue, Qian Daoliu raised her and eventually sacrificed himself to open her ninth Angel Trial. He learns about this fate from the future Qian Renxue and Rakshasa Bibi Dong, whose divine souls have returned to the past and become Fang Yuan’s Martial Souls 1 4 9.

Personality

Qian Daoliu values chivalry and his reputation for upright conduct. He condemns Qian Xunji’s future sexual assault of Bibi Dong, explicitly stating that even betrayal would not justify it. His principles do not exclude harsh punishment, however: he considers crippling a traitor acceptable and privately resolves to purge Bibi Dong if she knowingly repeats her future betrayal 4 5 6 8.

His treatment of family is openly uneven. He is gentle toward Fang Yuan and cannot bring himself to strike Qian Renxue after learning of her failures, but repeatedly beats Qian Xunji—even blaming him for a daughter he never had the opportunity to raise. Some of his early punishment is a performance before the supposed Angel God Ancestor; his anger over Bibi Dong’s future abuse is genuine 4 5 7 9.

As a leader, he can restrain his anger and reconsider his decisions. He accepts Fang Yuan’s argument against punishing young Bibi Dong for events that have not happened and rejects an immediate attack on the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan because it could unite other powers against Spirit Hall 6 10.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Revelations in the Pope’s Hall

Drawn by Angel Divine Power, Qian Daoliu initially prepares to bow to Qian Renxue as the Angel God Ancestor. Her greeting of “Grandpa” confuses him, and he mistakenly concludes that Fang Yuan is Qian Xunji’s illegitimate son. Qian Renxue then explains that she is his future granddaughter and has become Fang Yuan’s Martial Soul 2 3 4.

Her account of Qian Xunji’s future abuse of Bibi Dong provokes a severe beating. When the discussion shifts to Bibi Dong’s future betrayal, Fang Yuan persuades Qian Daoliu to give the innocent child a chance. He subsequently accepts Fang Yuan as his disciple and names him Spirit Hall’s Holy Son 5 6 7.

The appearance of Rakshasa Bibi Dong exposes further disasters: Qian Xunji’s death, Qian Renxue’s attachment to Tang San, Qian Daoliu’s sacrifice, and Spirit Hall’s destruction. Rather than immediately attacking the implicated sects, he orders investigations into Yu Xiaogang and Tang San’s parentage 8 9 10.

Protecting and Testing Fang Yuan

Qian Daoliu rushes to Fang Yuan’s residence after sensing renewed Angel Divine Power. Once he understands that Qian Renxue is strengthening the boy, he stops the other Enshrined from interrupting and stands guard 14 15 16.

After Fang Yuan’s three Soul Rings reach one hundred thousand years, Qian Daoliu tests his attack and defense. Fang Yuan’s control effects briefly affect him but cannot overcome the cultivation gap. Unwilling to risk embarrassment by suppressing his own cultivation, he assigns Demon Subduing Douluo as the next sparring partner 20 21 22.

Changing the Angel Inheritance’s Future

Qian Daoliu allows Qian Renxue to replenish her divine power through the Angel God Statue and joins her and Fang Yuan when Qian Yuhan summons them. He proposes eliminating Tang San’s parents, but Fang Yuan explains that Tang San could possess another infant through the Asura God’s intervention 22 23.

He instead arranges a search for Ah Yin and later warns Qian Xunji against killing Tang Hao, since doing so could leave them unable to identify Tang San’s new host. Meanwhile, Qian Renxue secures Qian Yuhan’s agreement to revise the Angel Trials so that Qian Daoliu will not have to sacrifice himself 24 25 28.

Sunset Forest Expedition

Qian Daoliu lets Fang Yuan determine the distribution of the immortal herbs and leads the expedition to Sunset Forest. He approves Fang Yuan’s gift of a Medusa Snake Emperor head soul bone to Gui Mei and transports the younger members into the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well’s valley 29 30.

At the well, he reprimands young Bibi Dong for clinging to Fang Yuan. Later, he agrees to guard Qian Renxue and Fang Yuan during another divine-power transformation 31 33.
