Background / History

Qian Daoliu was one of the continent’s three great Peerless Douluos, alongside Tang Chen and Bo Saixi. He had dominated an earlier era and served as Spirit Hall’s Pope and Arbitration Elder, earning the fearsome name “Executioner.” By the time he announced Lu Xuan’s title ceremony, his prolonged seclusion had led some outsiders to assume he was dead 16 33 55 58.

He had previously visited Slaughter City and knew of its secret arrangement with Spirit Hall: captured Evil Soul Masters were exiled there, sustaining the city’s cycle of bloodshed. Tang Hao also remembered Qian Daoliu pursuing him for ten thousand miles 4 33.

After Qian Xunji sexually assaulted Bibi Dong, she later killed and devoured him while he was gravely wounded following his pursuit of Tang Hao. Qian Daoliu knew that his son’s injuries could have been treated. Nevertheless, guilt over Qian Xunji’s actions prevented him from taking revenge, and he allowed Bibi Dong to become Pope 58 59.

Qian Daoliu usually maintains a gentle, restrained manner. When Bibi Dong challenges him over Lu Xuan’s recruitment, he stops Azure Luan from escalating the confrontation and lets the child choose his own teacher. After Lu Xuan accepts, he prevents him from kneeling, saying that such formality is unnecessary 4.

His affection for Qian Renxue and Lu Xuan repeatedly breaks through that composure. He celebrates their potential for godhood, becomes visibly anxious during Lu Xuan’s dangerous first Soul Ring absorption, and prepares food and shelter while his disciple recovers 5 6 16.

Initially a cautious teacher, he regards conventional Soul Ring configurations as the safest path. Lu Xuan’s successful absorption of two thousand-year rings forces him to reconsider: he recognizes that exceptional talents require training suited to their abilities and regrets having raised Qian Renxue too conservatively 5 6.

His devotion to the Angel God is expressed through frequent prayer before the deity’s statue. That religious commitment coexists with ruthless loyalty to Spirit Hall: he orders the elimination of anyone who occupies the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well and resists its seizure, and later uses Lu Xuan’s investiture to intimidate rival powers 10 12 56.

Guilt over his son’s crimes is his clearest source of indecision. He intends to conceal the truth of Qian Renxue’s birth until his death, and only relinquishes his protection of Bibi Dong after Lu Xuan confronts him about her methods 58 59.
