Background / History

Yu Xiaogang spent roughly half his life in Nuoding City, which Qian Chenming identifies as the place where Tang San’s story began. He later became Tang San’s teacher and regarded his disciple’s future achievements as the means of proving his own theories 29 30.

He also shared a romantic past with Bibi Dong. Upon learning of her imprisonment, he remembers her younger self smiling and waiting for him beneath the moon. He possessed a Pope Token and claimed that he had once been an honored guest of Spirit Hall 14 15.

Yu Xiaogang wears black clothing and has a neatly trimmed crew cut 14.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang places considerable importance on his reputation as a theorist. When Spirit Hall refuses him entry, he invokes his writings, prestige, and former standing as an honored guest. His anger readily becomes aggressive: he nearly strangles an elderly man who merely informs him of Bibi Dong’s downfall, then treats the palace guards imperiously while waiting for admission 14 15.

His attachment to Tang San combines genuine concern with personal ambition. He stays beside his injured disciple’s bed and weeps over his condition, but also calls Tang San the culmination of his life’s work and the person who would establish the worth of his theories 29 30 31.

Despite his outspoken hostility toward Qian Chenming, he recognizes the danger of direct confrontation. He deliberately withholds a vow to destroy Spirit Hall while inside the Pope’s Palace, admitting to himself that saying it there would get him killed 31.

Failed Visit to Spirit Hall

Yu Xiaogang arrives in Spirit City ahead of the Shrek group to consult Bibi Dong about Twin Martial Souls and secure a safer future for Tang San. Instead, he discovers that she has been deposed and imprisoned. After recovering from the shock, he approaches Spirit Hall with his Pope Token and requests to see her 14.

Qian Chenming responds by keeping him waiting until late in the day, then having a sign erected reading, “Yu Xiaogang and dogs are forbidden entry!” Yu Xiaogang’s angry response escalates into an insult against the pope, giving the guards grounds to administer twenty cane strikes 14 15.

When Shrek arrives, he dismisses Tang San’s questions about his swollen face as “just a little wind and frost.” In private, he confirms Bibi Dong’s imprisonment and warns the group that Qian Chenming is sinister and fickle 17.

Tournament Victory and Disqualification

Yu Xiaogang directs Shrek’s decision to forfeit the individual matches. The team defeats New Godwind Academy and subsequently overcomes the Spirit Hall Team in the championship match 22.

When Qian Chenming revokes their championship, Yu Xiaogang steps forward as team leader and requests a reason. He notices the unusual reactions of the Titled Douluo, Tang San, and Xiao Wu but remains confused until the pope announces that Xiao Wu is a hundred-thousand-year soul beast. He then joins Flender and Liu Erlong in preparing to resist her capture 24 25.

Tang Hao’s Defeat

Tang Hao’s arrival convinces Yu Xiaogang that rescue is possible. That confidence unravels when Qian Chenming reveals a soul ring configuration outside his theoretical framework and then shatters Tang Hao’s Clear Sky True Body 25 26 27.

After Qian Chenming executes Tang Hao and strikes Tang San unconscious, Yu Xiaogang supports his disciple and condemns the pope. He argues that Tang San could have become the continent’s strongest being and accuses Qian Chenming of destroying its future. Qian Chenming dismisses the outburst and leaves him alive 29.

Tang San’s Recovery

Two days later, Yu Xiaogang remains at Tang San’s bedside in a Spirit City inn. When Tang San wakes, he tells him that Spirit Hall has taken Xiao Wu 30.

He then explains that physicians consider Tang San’s damaged meridians and reduced Soul Power recoverable, but that injuries to his genitals required their removal. His attempts at reassurance fail to relieve Tang San’s distress. Away from Qian Chenming, Yu Xiaogang finally swears that he will spare no cost to destroy Spirit Hall 31.
