Background
Tang San retains memories and martial techniques from a previous life in the Tang Sect. His inherited arts include the Mysterious Heaven Skill, Purple Demon Eye, Mysterious Jade Hand, Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track, and Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon. His experience with Tang Sect training helps him endure the demands of Yu Xiaogang’s instruction 6 7 8.
He grew up in poverty in Holy Soul Village with Tang Hao, who spent much of his time drinking, sleeping, or occasionally smithing. Tang San received little parental affection and became malnourished. Yu Xiaogang regarded the situation as Tang San caring for his father rather than the reverse 1 2.
Old Jack brought him to Nuoding Academy, where Yu Xiaogang recognized the significance of his innate full soul power and apparently ordinary Blue Silver Grass. When Yu Xiaogang deduced that he possessed a second martial soul, Tang San initially reacted defensively, remembering his father’s warning to conceal the hammer in his left hand 1.
Appearance
- Soul Ancestor armor: Blue True Body Armor covers his left arm and the left side of his chest, with purple crystal armor on his shoulder. His Blue Silver Grass Soul Mark appears in his left palm 22 28.
- Blackening form: His body and Blue Silver Grass turn pitch-black, while his eyes become golden. In the tournament, this state also produces an oppressive dark glow 74 99.
- Eight Spider Lances: The external soul bone emerges from his back, tearing through the clothing covering it when deployed 74.
Personality
Tang San is disciplined and persistent. During his early Shave training, he repeats the same movements hundreds or thousands of times despite blistered feet, aching calves, and difficulty walking. He also studies soul master theory eagerly and follows Yu Xiaogang’s training arrangements without complaint 6 8.
His teacher’s care inspires intense gratitude. Having experienced little affection at home, he comes to regard Yu Xiaogang as both mentor and father. Shi Nian’s nightmare exploits this attachment by showing an illusory Yu Xiaogang disowning him and Xiao Wu rejecting him because of his previous life 2 7 74.
Under Yu Xiaogang’s influence, Tang San becomes more concerned with common people and less willing to equate personal enemies with an entire institution. Although angered by his mother’s fate, he recognizes Spirit Hall’s public services and accepts a distinction between the guilty and innocent 35 36 63.
He is also considerate of his companions’ vulnerabilities. After deducing the likely reasons for Dai Mubai’s departure from Star Luo, he chooses not to expose those painful circumstances in front of the others 106.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass / Blue Silver King
Yu Xiaogang directs Tang San toward the life-attribute route, emphasizing vitality rather than spending soul rings on control effects that the plant can already perform naturally. He initially identifies the martial soul as a possible Blue Silver King; by Tang San’s Soul King stage, he explicitly calls it Blue Silver King 3 6 63.
- Direct control: After obtaining his first ring, Tang San can freely manipulate his grass within a fifty-meter radius and bind surrounding trees 5.
- Regeneration: Grass shattered by Zhao Wuji takes root and sprouts again almost immediately 28.
- Defensive use: He raises grass between Zhao Wuji and Zhu Zhuqing to intercept a burst of soul power 28.
- Fire resistance: His Spider Web Restraint passes through the Bloodthorn Team’s flames without burning. Huo Wushuang later acknowledges that his Blackening state resists flames, though Huo Wu’s subsequent attack still counters his grass 56 99 100.
- Evolution limit: Awakening the Blue Silver Emperor bloodline is planned for after the Soul Master Tournament; it has not occurred in the supplied passages 63.
Soul Ring Skills
| Ring | Skill | Documented Effects |
|---|---|---|
| First — 890 years | Earth Vein Power | Roots Blue Silver Grass in the earth veins to draw energy, strengthen growth, and greatly reduce soul power expenditure. Tang San states that its replenishment can continue as long as earth lies beneath him 5 6 23. |
| Second — thousand-year | Spider Web Restraint | Launches an enormous sticky web. Tang San uses it to capture two Shadow Wolf Soul Masters and pull them across a wall of fire 22 56. |
| Fourth — ten-thousand-year | Essence Plunder | Causes the grass to grow additional tendrils that envelop Zhao Wuji. The supplied passage does not explain the skill’s full effect 28. |
| Fifth — ten-thousand-year | Blue Silver: Myriad Phenomena | Transforms and combines grass into complex constructs, including a giant dragon and numerous functioning Godly Zhuge Crossbows 74. |
Self-Created Blue Silver Skills
Yu Xiaogang encourages Tang San to develop control techniques directly from his martial soul’s manipulability rather than obtain redundant ring skills 6.
- Blue Silver Entanglement: Binds an opponent’s limbs and torso with strands of grass 22.
- Blue Silver Cage: Encloses and restrains a target; Tang San uses it against Dai Mubai and Zhao Wuji 22 28.
- Blue Silver Cage Formation: Creates multiple enclosures across an arena or overlapping layers of protection. Against the Bloodthorn Team, it initially traps all seven opponents 56 100.
- Blue Silver Thorn Array: Raises a dense forest of black grass thorns from the ground toward Huo Wu 100.
Tang Sect Techniques
- Mysterious Heaven Skill: His internal cultivation method. Its first bottleneck corresponds to the need for his first soul ring, and absorbing that ring unlocks its second level 3 5.
- Mysterious Jade Hand: Turns his hands jade-colored and strengthens their use in close combat. He later combines it with the Mysterious Heaven Skill and Paper Arts against Huo Wu’s Purple Flame 7 100.
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Footwork emphasizing agility and changes of direction. Tang San combines it with Shave’s straight-line acceleration 8 100.
- Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon: An inherited Tang Sect technique he recognizes as comparable to the transmissible self-created soul skills described by Yu Xiaogang 6 7.
- Hidden-weapon arts: Even early in his training, he can throw five ordinary pebbles with enough precision to cover Yu Xiaogang’s apparent escape directions 7.
Purple Demon Eye
- Illusion detection: Tang San notices an inconsistency in Shi Nian’s illusion and breaks free through an eruption of spiritual power 73.
- Mustard Seed Realm: By his fight with Shi Nian, he has reached this realm and can reflect Nightmare back at its caster 74.
- Limit: Shi Nian’s head-bone-enhanced Illusion Space, combined with Martial Soul Avatar and Mental Chaos, overwhelms his perception. Purple Demon Eye cannot immediately dispel the resulting confusion 74.
Six Styles
Yu Xiaogang teaches Tang San the Six Styles as body-based techniques that do not require a particular martial soul or soul ring. Tang San initially believes his teacher created them personally 6 7.
- Shave: After half a month, he can perform a simplified version using three or four consecutive stamps, enough to shift five feet and evade Xiao Wu’s Waist Bow. After a year, he uses it freely in combat 8 10.
- Paper Arts: He twists his body to neutralize Zhao Wuji’s Gravity Squeeze and escape with assistance from his grass. He later layers the technique with Tang Sect arts against Huo Wu 29 100.
- Training limits: Moonwalk is initially beyond his physical capabilities. Yu Xiaogang recommends mastering Shave first as a foundation for Moonwalk and Storm Leg 7.
Blackening
Blackening changes Tang San’s body and grass to black and is used alongside his large-scale Myriad Phenomena attacks 74.
- Fire resistance: Huo Wushuang explicitly recognizes that the state is not afraid of flames 99.
- High consumption: Blackening rapidly drains soul power, especially when combined with wide-area soul skills. Tang San cannot sustain his all-out crossbow barrage for long 74.
Clear Sky Hammer
- Tang San possesses the Clear Sky Hammer as his second martial soul and initially conceals it under Tang Hao’s instructions 1 62.
- Its presence alongside Blue Silver Grass helps him infer a connection to the Clear Sky Sect before Yu Xiaogang confirms his parentage 62 63.
Equipment & Items
- Eight Spider Lances — An external soul bone obtained during the hunt for his third soul ring in the Star Dou Great Forest. Deploying it greatly increases his speed. Tang San states that a fully fused external soul bone will not drop even after its owner dies 74.
- Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges — A storage belt given to him by Yu Xiaogang. It is silver with purple crystals and holds money, purchases, tools, and other possessions 20 21 23.
- Crystal hair — Fine golden filaments extracted from a crystal. When infused with soul power, they straighten into sharp, tough material suitable for hidden weapons 23.
- Dagger — Supplied by Yu Xiaogang for defense and finishing soul beasts. Tang San uses it to sever the main root of his first ring’s soul beast 4 5.
- Great Soul Arena mask — Issued with the team’s code names to help conceal their identities during competition 52 53.
Relationships
- Yu Xiaogang — Teacher and father figure. His instruction reshapes Tang San’s cultivation route, combat training, and moral outlook; he also protects Tang San from Shi Nian and Huo Wu’s uncontrolled attack 2 7 35 75 101.
- Xiao Wu — Roommate, close companion, sparring partner, and fellow disciple. She calls him her big brother. His success with Shave motivates her to seek Yu Xiaogang’s instruction 6 8 9 20.
- Tang Hao — Father and the Clear Sky Douluo. Despite Tang Hao’s neglect and prolonged absence, Tang San misses him. Yu Xiaogang challenges Tang Hao’s belief that revenge must determine his son’s life 2 35.
- Ah Yin — Mother and a hundred-thousand-year Blue Silver Emperor. Learning that she may retain a thread of life gives Tang San hope of restoring her 62 63.
- Old Jack — Village elder who escorts him to Nuoding Academy and urges him to cultivate diligently for Holy Soul Village 1.
- Dai Mubai — Initially an opponent, later a teammate and sparring partner. Tang San defeats him in their first confrontation and later respects his reluctance to discuss his imperial background 22 23 83 106.
- Huo Wu — Tournament rival. Although he initially moves behind her to evade her attack, Tang San ultimately shields her when it threatens both of them 100 101.
- Shi Nian — Would-be murderer who targets him as an obstacle to Canghui Academy. Tang San severely wounds him before Yu Xiaogang intervenes 73 74 75.

- Survives after Luo Sanpao dispels the attack. Because Yu Xiaogang intervenes, he asks the referee to rule the round a loss for Tang San 101.
